Initial X configuration
Hi, I ma just setting up hamm on a Dell Dimension XPS D333. I am trying to run XF86Setup with the vga16 server. Frustratignly, I cannot figure out how to get the mouse to move. Anyone have an idea as to what port and protocol I should try? While I am at it, the Dell has a Dimension Fire GL 1000 Pro card and I am using an AppleVision 1710 monitor. If anyone has settings handy for the card and the monitor, I'd appreciate a copy. Thanks, Igor -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? I believe the /var/ttfonts directory is suplied by the xfstt package. If not, create it yourself. Make a subdirectory with a nice name (like, "winfonts" or whatever) in /var/ttfonts. Put the *.ttf files in this subdirectory. Then the only thing you need to do is start xfstt and let the X server connect to it. Where you get the fonts is another matter. Rip them from Windows, MS Office or any other program that ships with TrueType fonts. Or get yourself one of thse "shareware fonts" CD-ROMs. Or download them from some ftp server. Bind and general network questions.
First off I want to thank you all for all the feedback about X fonts I will try out teh True Type font packages soon. However I know have some bind questions. I have an internal network hidden behind IP Masq called *.atkinson.int and I connect to the outside world with ppp and diald. I also running bind. The gateways address is 192.168.1.5. My questions are this? 1) How do I add the the local machines to bind. Putting them in /etc/hosts need not seam to work. 2) Why doesn't diald kick in when bind tries to connect to the outside word when looking up an ip address. 3) I also have another debain machine at 192.168.1.1. However when that machine leaves the network nothing works right. Why is this? I tried making the gateway machine 192.168.1.1 with no luck. Thanks in advance for any feedback you can give me. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

xauth cannot find libXmu when starting X
Hello all, When I try to fire up X, using startx or xdm, I receive the following error: xauth: can't load library 'libXmu.so.6' xinit: can't load library 'libXmu.so.6' The lib file does exist, lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root13 Jun 2 15:27 /usr/X11R6/lib/libXmu.so.6 -> libXmu.so.6.0 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root67856 Jul 17 1997 /usr/X11R6/lib/libXmu.so.6.0 and it is listed in the ldconfig -p list. I looked in the xauth man page, was not able to see anything incredibly useful. I suspect something wrong in /etc, but I am not sure (I accidently used 'tar xvfz' instead of 'tar cvfz' to "create" a new system backup; ended up overwriting a bunch of files with a rather old version. For shame...I have more current backups of /usr, /var, /home and /root, but not of /etc.) When I try to execute xdm or startx, it does not even load XF86Config (or at least it sends not of the usual info to the tty). My .Xauthority file is empty also. Suggestions? Thank you, Jeff Ballin -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I don't believe you can install libc6 without upgrading the rest of your system to use it, i.e., libc6 can't be a 'secondary' library while allowing libc5 to be the 'primary' one. It can work the other way around though. You can have libc6 as 'primary' and have libc5 for those programs that still need it. If you have the time, you can begin the upgrade with the autoup shell script from debian.org (look for the "Developer's Corner"), and upgrade only essential packages while keeping libc5 on hand for the rest. -- Ed -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". check that your /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers look like this: # /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers # # This file should contain entries to start the servers on the # local machine; if you have more than one display (not screen), # you can add entries to the list (one per line). If you also # have some X terminals connected which do not support XDMCP, # you can add them here as well. Each X terminal line should # look like: # XTerminalName:0 foreign # # When adding X servers, please keep the following things in mind: # - For each X server other than :0, the display number must be # on the command line # - This is the place to add the -bpp option to the command line # - If you run multiple X servers, it is wise to add the vtXX # option to each of them, since this is the only sure way of # knowing in advance which X server attaches to which console. # # Example: # :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 vt9 -bpp 16 # :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X :1 vt10 -bpp 8 # :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X the last line is particularly important, also, check the location of X,it may be different on your system (i'm using the latest unstable version, but i don't think it will be much different on your system). Alain p.s.also notice that there are 2 Xserver(s) file Xserver (found in /etc/X11/) and Xservers (found in /etc/X11/xdm/) it's the later that you want. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". i did a fresh install of slink last night (& also tonight) and i possibly found a bug in smail, when i did the installation, the smailconfig command used when dselect install thing did not have the same behavior than the one used in a bo installation (i.e.i choosen the no.4 option, local mail delivered only) but it did not ask to which user to send root mail and my /etc/aliases was empty, after the installation,i choosed to download all my e-mail waiting on my isp mail server, the mail downloaded properly but then there where no mail in both 2 account on my computer,i fired up ircii,go to the irc.debian.org server and asked for help, with the help of a very good user, whe both troubleshooted my installation of smail but unfortunately, this hasn't given much result,i ended up downloading exim tonight,it installed right (& asked the right questions ) and i could download mail properly, now my /etc/aliases file look right. Man-db and hamm
In my old bo man-db package I was able to select the manual pages I get using the LANG variable. For example, after installing manpages-de and setting LANG=de_DE I was getting the german version if available. In the hamm version of man-db (2.3.10-63) this no longer works. Now it seems that man-db only finds pages beneath de but not beneath de_DE. I'd have to change the MANPATH for each single user or modify the manpath.conf to put the german path before the others making the chance globally regardless how the users LANG variable is set. I didn't make any chance to the old and the new mandb.config file. Does anybody know the reason for this strange behaviour of the new version? Is the newer version of manpages-de package to be accused? BTW: The manual pages beneath de are the man-db ones. The other as installed from the manpages-de packages are stored beneath de_DE. Re: comp usa rebates?
I bought a lot of things from Comp USA on rebate and they didn't send me any of them (rebates) until I called them. They told me "their rebate department had some problems." Anyway that means they lost most of the rebates, or at least they lost the ones I sent. So you gotta call them and tell them what rebates you sent...They might also ask you for the copies of receipt...BTW when sending rebates ALWAYS make copies (esp. if you can get em for free like I can :) of the receipts, or ask the store to give you a copy or two - will save you a lot of headaches later on. Using SMARTLIST from bo? Please, READ this.
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hello. This message is for users of the Debian smartlist package. I have detected a little problem which may arise when upgrading smartlist from bo to hamm. If you are running smartlist_3.1016 from bo, please read the following before upgrading to hamm. The problem is very simple: In bo, when a list was created, the script /var/list/.bin/createlist used HARDlinks to link some files from the list directory to the .etc directory. Well, by design, dpkg does not preserve those hardlinks on upgrades. Instead, they end up being different files. For example, if, say "foo/rc.request" is a hardlink to ".etc/rc.request" (created automatically by "createlist") and the file .etc/rc.request is replaced by a newer one by dpkg, then foo/rc.request and .etc/rc.request will not be hardlinked anymore. This is not what one might expect. All lists should "benefit" from enhancements in the files in .etc. Therefore it is much better to use symlinks and not hardlinks. The .bin/createlist in hamm's smartlist already uses symlinks. However, one may have already lots of created lists with hardlinks to .etc. I strongly recommend to convert all those hardlinks into symlinks *before* upgrading to hamm's smartlist. The "preinst" script for smartlist_3.10.7-5 (just installed in hamm) will just warn you about this and will let you to break the process by pressing Control-C. This way, smartlist will not be upgraded until the user is aware of the problem and has fixed it. The following script will do the job. I have tested it and works for me, but use it at your own risk. *-8<- #!/bin/sh filestosymlink="rc.submit rc.init rc.request help.txt subscribe.txt \ unsubscribe.txt archive.txt reject" cd /var/list # Note: touching .etc/rc.lock makes incoming mails to be on hold # temporarily, while we convert hardlinks into symlinks. # See the smartlist Manual for details. touch .etc/rc.lock echo Please wait for 5 seconds. sleep 5 echo Converting most hardlinks into symlinks... for a in `ls`; do if [ -d $a ]; then cd $a if [ -d archive ]; then for b in $filestosymlink; do if [ -f $b ]; then inode1=`ls -li ../.etc/$b | awk '{ print $1 }'` inode2=`ls -li $b | awk '{ print $1 }'` if [ "$inode1" = "$inode2" ]; then rm -f $b ln -s ../.etc/$b fi fi done fi cd .. fi done rm -f .etc/rc.lock echo Done. *-8<- Sorry for the inconvenience, etc. p.s. I have uploaded today bo-unstable releases of procmail and smartlist, for people using 1.3.1 who want Maildir support in procmail or confirmation of subscriptions in smartlist (remember to transform hardlinks into symlinks *first*). X-windows on a Valuepoint
I have installed the Debian Linux base OS on my IBM Valuepoint 425SX by downloading files from the Debian site and putting them on floppies (there's no CD drive on the Valuepoint.) Everything went fine. Linux boots and I have been able to download and install numerous packages (man pages etc.) using dselect. My problem is that X-windows doesn't want to run. I installed all the required packages for this, though in no particular order, and let the dselect configuration utility tell me what was missing. In the fullness of time, it stopped asking for any more modules; the ones I clearly remember were xdm, cpp, fvwm95-2, svga-server and xbase. I'm sure there were others. Only Xbase gave me trouble owing to its size. I had to pkzip it and decompress it into a dos partition, mount that, and copy it to a directory structure mirroring the Debian site. In the end, though, it installed fine and took me through a configuration process where I was asked to choose between xdm and xstart as methods for starting X-windows. I chose xdm. Now when I type "xdm" and hit enter, the prompt just returns. I have seen various faq references suggesting that the F7 virtual console might have my X-windows running, but when I Alt-F7 I just see a blinking cursor. I don't really mind doing this all over if it's at all likely to work. I want to change the way I partitioned the drive anyway. I just wonder whether there is some incompatibility in the video that prevents it from working. This is a 1992 era Valuepoint with a Tseng 4000 chip and one megabyte of video memory all on the motherboard. It seems like a svga-class setup so it was the svga Xserver package I installed along with the other stuff. Any thoughts or comments much appreciated. Thanks, Dale Pierce ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

Windows Registry Editor for Linux
There was a thread a week or 2 ago where someone asked if there was a registry editor for linux. In that thread I said that I did not know of one but had a file whioch described the registry (written by someone outside of M$ who spent a few sleepless nights reverse engineering it) The next few days after that post I recived numerous responses asking me for the file. I had it at work ..and it was over a long weekend...so I don't think I sent it to everyone who asked for it. Since I am not sure who I gave it to and it is too long to post here... I placed it in my public_html dir on my ISP...so... for anyone who wants it point a browser at http://www.gis.net/~sjc/winreg.txt it is not linked from the web page there at all..I just placed it there now I will be removing this file at some point (lets say I will leave it there at least until monday...no gaurantees beyond that...but it may be there longer) I would like to see someone write a Windows Registry editor for linux (I think it would be cool...not terribly usefull but cool...hmm a linux emergency boot disk with a windows reg editor??) I don't know if there is actually enough info in the file to do it...but there is allot of info (on the Win3.1, win95 AND WinNT registry) as a side note... wine actually works well enough to use regedit for win95 -Steve pgpX2flwCLcUZ.pgp Description: PGP signature

(I think they are addressses) It's a good idea to list the packages you are using (lpr/lprng/magicfilter/apsfilter). This error is actually from ghostscript. Ghostscript takes a postscript file and translates it into a different format (HP deskjet/epson/X-windows/...). Try configuring the printer (apsconfig?/magicfilterconfig). Then try "lpr file" on a normal text file. Then try more complex files - such as a compressed file. The way to print things on unix is to convert them into postscript and then print the postscript out. If you don't have a postscript printer, then you use ghostscript in the middle. The contents of /etc/printcap and what printer you are using would be helpful too. > I recently chmod / -R 777 my system to try and cure a permission problem I > was having, I know - major stupid, This might be the problem. Has anyone besides me bought some memory from comp-usa within the last 6 months and is STILL waiting for their rebates? I bought some 64mb worth or dram under several different rebate programs and have still not heard from the bastards. Re: INSTALLATION REPORT
Hi, The "hosts" command is in the dnsutils package, which you must not have installed. However, if you were able to contact ftp.debian.org earlier with the same ISP, it's unlikely to be a reverse-dns-lookup problem. Trying to contact the mirror at llug.sep.bnl.gov would be a good test - if you can reach it, I suspect you do have a fevers-dns-lookup problem, if you can't it is something else with your ppp setup. > When I try >qftp ftp.debian.org I get message: Host lookup error. This sounds link a possible bind problem. Do you have your ISP's nameservers set up properly in /etc/resolv.conf? If you're not sure, check /usr/doc/ppp/README.linux.gz for information about /etc/resolv.conf. Bob -- _ |_) _ |_ Robert D. PPP problem
I've installed Debian 1.3 couple of weeks ago and can't get some things to work or find answer in docs, so maybe someone in here knows the answer... :) Every time I try to connect to my internet provider I am able to establish the connection, but after like 5-10 seconds prog reports something like: cannot find ethernet address for system ARP. I have tried everything, but can't get it to work. Why is it even looking for ethernet address? I am using PPP over TCP/IP. Can someone please tell me what am I doing wrong? I also don't have device driver for Sound Blaster. I tried using MAKEDEV, but I don't have any docs. Can someone who got his/her SB to work tell me what to do? You can look at it this way: You have a licence for Win95, under no circumstances does anyone ever install and use the FULL OS (it would be impossible to have every pice of hardware in existance that win95 comes with a driver for on 1 PC would it not?) In this case as long as you have a licence ot use win95...you should be able to use the fonts under linux...because you have a licence for use of the Win95 OS and you are validly using part of that OS. Is this M$s view on the subject? probably not...in fact I would not be surprized to see them argue that it is completly illegal...and a violation of their licence. However...the day that that argument stands up in court (even for Micro$oft) is the day that I will finnaly loose the last shred of respect I have for government and courts (which is hanging on some very thin threads as it is) -Steve -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". These all work with emacs on nt...(don't ask, I do the best I can with company policy being what it is). There are probably some of these in win95 but I don't use it and don't know... It should go on to include that "this is not legal advise". Offer legal advise, and you're held to the standard of a lawyer. That you did it for free is not any type of defense. While I understand tand applaud the ideas and goals, being a lawyer myself, there's no way I'll touch such a project--it's a liablity problem waiting to happen. Generally, and recognise that this is not legal advise, and that I'm probably not licensed in your jurisdiction anywaay, explaining what the law *is* isn't legal advise, and wouldn't (usually) be actionable if incorrect. Explain how to do a specific thing, and you're a lot closer. Apply it to a particular person's situation, and you're all the way on the hooks--the person you explainded it too, for free, and the DA, for practicing without a license. This is reall a job that needs a lawyer with a *big* E&O (malpractice) policy. Not just for the possibility of mistakes, but because it is expensive to be sued when write. I have compiled Festival myself, to support 16-bit linux16audio (/dev/dsp). It only supports one audio device, and it appears that the .deb I had used is compiled to support 8-bit sunaudio (/dev/audio). That has improved the sound. I also have set up the rb_mbrola voice, which apparently is the best. It requires the MBROLA synthesizer and one of its voices. Together, those changes have produced a TTS system which I must say is quite good. I have heard 3 hardware TTS systems, and this software-only solution is comparable. I see it trips on a few words ("poison" sometimes throws it for a total loop, screwing up the entire sentence) but all in all it is adequate. [I had it read this message, and from "poison" to "adequate" was not read.] I have installed festival.el into XEmacs. I don't get the menus, but I have bound the functions to function keys, and so can TTS regions and buffers. I will investigate into using Emacspeak with Festival. The festival.el package is far too rudimentary to be used as a screen reader, although it may provide the basis for creating one. -- SEGV Homepage: http://www.cgocable.net/~mlepage/ Java Game Engine: http://www.cgocable.net/~mlepage/YAGE/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". You do however still need to add it to the fontpath manually (which makes sense really..since it doesn't come with any fonts it will not run properly even from that script until you actually get some fonts) If you are interested you can get the source and compile it for bo .. but I don't have a bo system and all so I didn't compile it for bo and put it in bo-unstable but...the source version should compile just fine [side note] The /var/ttfonts will be changing soon. HELP: Unable to boot hamm on IBM Thinkpad
Dear DebianFriends, I have installed many versions of Debian Linux on many Thinkpads. After working for the past 8 months with a 1.3.1 brought to libc6 with many hamm packages I decided to make a clean transition to a hamm system. Thinkpads usually have to use the resc1440tecra.bin disks since it does not boot bzImage kernels properly. Unfortunately this resc1440tecra.bin image (downloaded from ftp.debian.org with a date of 28 May) hangs with a Loading linux .. prompt (just two dots and hangs with the floppy spinning forever). Tried writing with rawrite, with dd, on different floppies and even tried the resc1440.bin file Any help for me ??? Thank you very much in advance. [off-topic] Toshiba 780 CDM
Greetings, yesterday I installed Debian (frozen) on my friend's laptop. The machine is a Toshiba 780 CDM, and everything worked out pretty good: we have another debian user :-). The only problem we got is the suspend/resume with X: if he suspend/resume the machine with X on the screen, X is unusable after. Sometimes it doesn't even accept input from the keyborad (that is if he's not on the net he cannot ctrl-alt-backspace X: only hard reboot!). Is a well know bug of X? Is there some fixes? And, is anyone running on the same laptop? Best kernel for now?
Hi, I need to recompile my kernel to add bridging support. (For IPX) I'm currently running 2.0.33, it seems to run fine, although I'm wary of reports of it being rather unstable. I had 2.0.32, but gpm died after two weeks, restarting gpm didn't work, but rebooting did. I have no idea if this was a kernel problem, but I think it happened twice. 2.0.33 has had no such problem. Anyway, I'm considering changing kernels. I am running a 386SX/20 machine w/ 8meg of RAM, 100meg IDE HDD. I use it mostly for Samba, IPMASQ with dial-up line, Mail and news server. I don't have a CDROM or SCSI hardware on this machine, so I'm not worried about support for these. How are the 2.0.34prethingees like? Very stable? What advantages over 2.0.33? What are the unstable kernels (2.1.x) like? What advantages over the stable ones? TIA, Tim. --- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Martin, Here's what I have going on between my Win95 and Linux boxes. I purchased two VERY inexpensive ethernet cards ($10 for a 10MB ISA and $15 for a 10MB PCI). My two machines are sitting within my home, so I purchased a ethernet crossover cable so I could connect them without using a hub. Next, I used Samba and I connected my Win95 machine to the Linux box using standard net use commands, worked pretty slick. There is a "HOWTO" doc on this at /usr/doc/HOWTO/SMB-HOWTO.gz that does a good job at explaining what needs to be done. Lastly, I hate to admit it, but one of the first things I did was open the /etc/passwd file within Win95 Notepad and edited it. It changed the mode settings and I could no longer logon to my Linux box. Luckily I had a copy of the original file and just copied it over and things are fine now... Duu. Dean C. Netscape in hamm
I've recently upgraded to hamm, but can't install netscape. Apparently it depends on xlib6 which I had to deselect because it conflicted with xlib6g. Is there a version of netscape which uses the newer library? Or is there a way of installing both? I thought that netscape had made the source code freely available, and that someone from debian had packaged this up - but I couldn't find it - what happened to it, or am I mistaken? If I just pipe to a file I get a Tomas> lot of unwanted characters, is there a utiliy for this? There's a nifty utility called 'col' which was designed just for that. Try piping the output from 'man' to 'col -b' before saving it, like: man man | col -b > man.txt Of course, 'man col' is somthing you'll want to do. :{) -- Benoit Goudreault-Emond Reply to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] PGP public key fingerprint: 11 43 A9 04 7C 11 41 44 5F FC 69 B1 B6 0A ED 78 E-mail me to receive the actual public key. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I just wonder if that bugs developers a little) Please note that 5.1 is only out because there were serious security problems with 5.0, as well as other quality-control problems in the Red Hat distribution. So, if they had tested the first version properly instead of grabbing for dollars, there wouldn't have been a second. The Debian team have a more responsible attitude, and are waiting until they are much more sure of the product before releasing it. If you don't want to wait, you can always download the "deep freeze" version, and update any changes after the release date. I'd rather have a stable, secure version later than a buggy, insecure version a few weeks earlier.
