I believe that is a part of libstdc++ so make sure you have libstdc++-dev (or something along those lines) installed. I'm trying to compile SystemC (opensource C++ HDL) from www.systemc.org. It configures but will not build because it can't find ieeefp.h. Does this file exist in any debian pacakges ? If so, which one ??? Is there anyway to search the package contents for files (eg. using "apt-cache search" or something similar) ??? Thanks, Brendan Simon.

Re: ALSA & missing symbols
I'm running ALSA with 2.2.18-pre21, so I'm also curious to know what the problems are with this kernel (that's directed at the poster who said there were problems). A few weeks ago I posted my experiences getting ALSA running--it was a bit of an adventure. When I checked there were no packages you could just download and install to get ALSA running: all the prebuilt ones were for very old versions of of the kernel. I think the issue is that for ALSA to work certain drivers need to be off (or at least not compiled into the kernel), and these are in the stock debian kernels. At any rate, I had to drop back to rebuild the kernel from source and then build the alsa modules. There is supposed to be a way to build the modules and the kernel in one go, but I always had to build the new kernel, start it, and then build the modules. I think I was getting the modules linked against the old kernel otherwise. Probably there are slicker ways of doing it! At 02:21 PM 2/4/01 -0600, you wrote: If I use a kernel-image package and the corresponding alsa-modules package for 2.2.18 or 2.2.18-pre21 in unstable, I get a load of missing symbols. Are these out of sync, or is this indicative of something else amiss on my system?

INSTALLATION TROUBLE AGAIN
Hello Mircea! I already solve the first problem but still have one. I managed to run the loadlin archive and run the linux kernel, it began detecting all my computer devices, well at least that was what I think it was doing. BUT, during this checkout, it stopped on a line that goes like this "RAMDISK compressed image found at block 0". and inmeditally before it checked my partitionings. As i already told you I have partitioned my hardisk with "fdisk" so I could run Windows and Linux at the same time, right now I'am on Windows. I dont know if the way I partitioned my disk was correct, and could be causing some trouble like the ones I already explained to you. Could you help on this one, your las sugestion was just right, so I thought you could help on this one, and as you told I am posting this on the users list. Any experience with new NVIDIA drivers?
I'm using a Gigabyte 6XOM7E-1 Mobo with a Creative Labs Graphics Blaster Riva TNT. Debian 2.2r2 testing. I just installed the nvidia 0.9-6 from tarball. I followed the instructions in NVIDIA_Linux.html, including renaming /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libGLcore.a, /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a, /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so* and libGLcore.so*. I didn't had any /usr/lib/libGL.so file. When I tried xscreen-demo GL savers, the speed was very slow, so I tried searching for Mesa* files and I renamed libMesaGL.so.3 and libMesaGLU.so.3. I made a symlink from libMesaGL to /usr/lib/libGL.so.1, and from libMesaGLU. Now when I try GL savers, I get a shared library not found relating libGLU.so, so I deleted the libMesaGLU symlink. No success. Any ideas? _ Do You Yahoo!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com

Using Linux to automate Win9x installations.
I've recently gotten a contract with a "rent to own" company in the city. I will be verifying computer hardware and installing the operating system (Win9x) on all of the computers that they deal with. My goal is to write an installation floppy that will handle the entire installation process. The floppy will be responsible to boot the computers into real-mode (MS-DOS) and connect to my Linux host via serial ports. On my Linux host I will have a "master image" of the operating system CD and a Windows installation script. Once connected the computers will access an installation script that will start an automated Windows installation over the serial cables This will enable me to start multiple OS installations at once and periodically check on them all. Why go with serial cable? Because most of the computers will not be equiped with ethernet cards. I have though about purchasing Norton Ghost, but I will be dealing with multiple version of the Windows operating system as well as several different hardware configurations. I already made a few serial cables using low capacitance cable and a few db9 and db25 connectors along with a few gender changers. I plan to get an old 10Mbps ISA NIC that runs under Linux and plug it into my hub, I then can use a few ethernet -> serial adapters and have up too 4 computers (4 ports on the HUB) running through the installation process at once!!! The best part is, I can configure my Linux host to masquerade the internet to the computers. With that I can run Windows update and install the apropriate drivers for the hardware too. This idea of mine sounds great but I'm not sure if it will work. For example, to connect to the Linux host via the serial ports I will need some sort of serial network driver for MS-DOS, where do I find it? And, what type of service will I need on my Linux hosts in order for the DOS clients to mount network shares? Will I be able to configure the DOS clients for TCP/IP networking? Thanks in advance Stef

Re: reiserfs annoyances
Yes, this works - removing the pass and dump parameters for ReiserFs disks stops the forced checking of the partitions. However, having defaults,errors=remount-ro still causes an error: unrecognised mount options. So I guess the errors=remount-ro bit is being passed to reiserfs as I don't get this message when I remove that bit. Re: ALSA & missing symbols
I am getting ready to install alsa. and have some questions. Is the *binary* 2.2.18pre21 kernel included in 2.2rev2 cds all right for alsa - selected for sound but no specific card option set? When you (Brian) say "corresponding alsa modules" are you referring to precompiled modules, as were available for 2.0.36 kernel in slink or the d.i.y. source for alsa modules? If precompiled modules for 2.2.18pre21 are available, where did you get them? When you (Warren) say the 2.2.18 kernels are fjucked up - what do you mean? Would you recommend any other kernels other than 2.4.0 as not being fjucked up? Exactly how far must one go in the kernel configuration/compiling process to create the include (<*.h>) files needed to compile the alsa module source? Or just more generally and to anyone, if you are going to have to compile a kernel to install alsa, which one would you choose. Re: Help
Hi, Ditto other replies... If you're adding a second ide drive Linux will call this /dev/hdb (importan't not to wipe out your present OS on the first drive /dev/hda in Linux terms) Your BIOS probably won't boot from the second drive so be sure to make a boot floppy when prompted. Re: How to install Java in Mozilla under Debian?
Wow - I had forgotten to Enable Java in Mozilla's preferences. I can't believe I did that. Nevertheless, things are still not working properly. I can now view java applets with the APPLET tag. (I assume the plugin is responsible for this.) Yet I still cannot view the ControlPanel.html file to configure the plugin. Also, all the applets are coming up in separate windows, rather than remaining part of the window that created them. This is quite a nuisance. How do I fix this, especially if I can't get to the ControlPanel? and how can I get there? Re: SysV Init
In your /etc directory there are a number of directorys called rcN.d where 'N' is a number indicating the runlevel. In each of those directorys there are a number of symbolic links which point to scripts (usually in /etc/init.d/ - at least that's where i keep them) which start with either 'S' or 'K' which indicate whether it will be started or killed and a number which indicates which order it is run in. Also, I believe there is a common way to write the scripts which allow you to pass either start, stop, restart (or maybe some others) which will allow the symbolic links to operate properly (for being started and stopped anyway). I'm not positive about that though. That's not quite all that's necessary. A more precise definition of "major problems" there is that none of the binary packages generated from the source package may have any release-critical bugs (i.e. bugs of severity serious, grave, or critical). Also, it must be in sync on all Debian's architectures: that doesn't mean it necessarily has to be built for all those architectures, but on the architectures where it has been built it must stay in sync. All its dependencies must have satisfied these conditions and made it into testing, too. And the version of the package that's a candidate for being installed into testing must have been in unstable for a certain amount of time. php4 is a large and fairly complex package, and it wouldn't surprise me if it failed at least one of these. The exact reasons can be found in the output from the testing scripts at http://ftp-master.debian.org/testing/ (particularly update_excuses.html), although the output is rather cryptic and you have to know how to read it. I'd have a look for you, but ftp-master seems to be down at the moment, so I'll try again later. The maintainer is probably the best person to try to sort out any problems; after that, debian-devel is more likely to be read by more of the relevant people than debian-user. Re: ALSA & missing symbols
Recompile with 2.4.0 and the alsa source (use the kernel-package utility) and be modest in what you select for the kernel (ex. no developmental code) and the problem should be fixed. 2.2.18pre21 and 2.2.18 seem to be fu-jucked up. The packages you'll need are kernel-source-2.4.0, alsa-source, alsaconf, kernel-package. Re: Help
Hello Stewart, Good choice on linux distro (applause).. If you really want one on one support, I would seek the nearest LUG (linux User Group) in your area with money in hand . There are some really good books available. I am reading a dated 3rd edition 'Running LINUX' by O'REILLY press. Seems like a pretty good book and I hope the 4th Edition is on it's way soon! This list is also a great resource for when all else fails, ask. Also, you may wish to check in with your local Community college for linux classes - you don't actually have to register for the class, just follow the people that go in the room and start asking questions. I'm sure you will be pointed to many 'online' resources as well. I really kind of like: http://www.linux.org/lessons/index.cgi Tips-n-tricks http://www.debianplanet.org/debianplanet/sections.php?op=listarticles&secid=1 Howtos http://www.debianplanet.org/debianplanet/sections.php?op=listarticles&secid=3 I'm sure you will also receive many other great ideas. I take it that you have both a CD-ROM and a CD-RW. If you use ide-scsi emulation without CONFIG_IDECD, I suspect that you will be able to access both of them as (emulated) scsi drives, /dev/scd0 and /dev/scd1. Alternately, it is possible to install LILO on a floppy, so the append option in lilo.conf should be recognized. See /usr/share/doc/lilo/Manual.txt.gz Bob

Re: reiserfs annoyances
Just to say that I've just switched most of my partitions over to reiserfs and am having exactely the same problems: the boot procedure halts on each boot-up because of the request for a file-system check on the root partition. What is going on here? I figured that perhaps there was a problem with the kernel mounting the partition itself on bootup, and then having to unmount and remount the partition as rw (instead of ro), and so changed the read-only option in /etc/lilo.conf. But to no change. Surely more than three people must have a reiserfs root partiton? Could people please post their experiences and extracts of /etc/fstab please? Re: MS internet keyboard
Lo, on Sunday, February 4, Romain Lerallut did write: > Good evening everyone, > > I'd like to use the wart-like "special keys" that came with my (ahem) MS > "internet keyboard", with X and if possible, with the console. I'm not sure how to do it on the console, but under X, this is pretty straightforward. * Fire up xev from within a terminal, give its window the input focus, push these little buttons, and watch the scancodes go buy. (You may already have these.) * Create an xmodmap file binding these scancodes to keysyms. Run `xmodmap -pke' for the current mapping, so you can see the syntax. See also xmodmap(1) for more details. Stick xmodmap .xmodmaprc in your .xsession/.xinitrc. * Go into your window manager configuration system and bind these new keysyms to commands to do whatever you want. For instance, I've bound my right windows key to raise or lower the current window. In .xmodmaprc, I've got keycode 0x74 = F15 and in my .fvwm2rc, I've got Key F15 WTSFI0123456789 N RaiseLower (the `WTSF' crud makes the keybinding active everywhere except the root window, and the `N' indicates no modifiers (alt, shift, etc.). RaiseLower is an fvwm function which raises or lowers the current window.) If I wanted this to start xmms, I could do Key F15 WTSFI0123456789 N Exec exec xmms HTH, Richard

How can realplayer / ipchains be setup?
how can net2phone / ipchains be setup
the info on net2phone's web site has been tried but... it looks like they are still picking random high numbered ports
configuring squid + ipchains = probs with random port numbers
I am using squid for FTP proxy. It looks like squid uses ftp active connections resulting in the server choosing a random port for communication when sending back to my firewall. ipchains doesn't seem have a way to deal with this and I do not want to open a large range of port that will cover all that "might" be chosen by servers. Is there someway to tell the OS to temporarily allow the chosen random port? Is there a way to have squid tell ftp servers to use a specific port? Other thoughts and options? Thank you,
forcing a module in
Hey people. I'm trying to set up the latest tulip driver with kernel 2.2.18pre21, and as usual, insmod complains that it can't find the kernel version. I'm told that you can force the module in anyway, but I've tried the -f option and it still complained. Is there a way to force the module in and ignore the error? A friend told me that he did that and it worked. Or, is there a fix for this? It works perfectly with the 2.2.12 kernel. Thanks, Mike -- Michael P.
