help
May, 2001 Russia, Krasnodar, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ladies and Gentelmen, I admire with your beautiful software. But to my great regret I have any problems with using package gs. I have probed all variants to print Russian (or ather language) texts. It fail to. According documentation, if to compile GNU Ghostscript with option "ttfont" - it work with ttf fonts and unicode encoding. I got source GNU Ghostscript and tried to apply this option. But "make" do not knows such. It is not possible to use True Type fonts at all, Is not it? It will be very fine to use free unicode True Type fonts to print non English texts. Please help me to use its. And why is the Ghostscript binary not compiled for True Type? About Type1 fonts for printing non English texts. I do not find in Internet free Type1 Russian koi8-r (and other encodings and languages) fonts. Where can I do it? Besides, reading documentation and handling various Type1 fonts and Ghostscript, there appeared suspictions that the Ghostscript and Type1 fonts can be use only for printing English texts. Please answer me - whether I can print Russian (and other) texts and how. If I must use only Type1 fonts - where I may get it. But it wil be better to use True Type for me. Now my operation system is Debian/Linux and pure Xfree86 (without any Gnome, Fvwm ...). Now I have not much time to learn details of your product. I very need to use it. I need your advice and help. I speak English not very good, But I am not a dull pupil :-) Yours Sincerely, Anatole.

Dependency Problems with Ximiam-GNOME Install
Hi Everyone- I'm trying to install Ximian GNOME with apt, but I am having some problems. I've added the following line to my sources.list file: deb http://red-carpet.ximian.com/debian stable main and then updated the package lists. I follow that up with: apt-get install task-ximian-gnome but it reports the following: Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies: task-ximian-gnome: Depends: codecommander but it is not installable Depends: gnome-games but it is not going to be installed Depends: gnome-iconedit but it is not installable I guess I'm missing something here, but can't figure out what. I can't find a codecommander package in stable so I figure it's something that needs to come from Ximian. Issuing an apt-get install with all the above packages still complains about codecommander. Should I be getting my GNOME from somewhere else? Thanks! -- ) Mark Wagnon ) [EMAIL PROTECTED] ) ( Chula Vista, CA ((

Mount is halfway broken
On my unstable box, "mount -a" segfaults. It gives the following error (lots of stuff snipped): <1>Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address[...] [...] pmd entry cbb49000: ... pmd not present! [...] I woke up this morning and everything was unmounted. I actually found that kind of odd :-) Windows instincts somehow kicked in and I rebooted. And mount segfaulted giving me only the NFS mounts, /, /proc and /dev. I have to manually mount several partitions. dmesg also segfaults, and I can't see if anything else is going wrong as (since /var is on a separate partition) I have no kernel log! I've been messing with it for a couple hours now, I have: 1) Installed mount/util-linux from testing and stable and compiled from source 2) Downgraded libc6 to testing and back again, no change 3) Removed and tested each stick of RAM in the machine, and some add-on cards 4) Memtest came up with no errors on five runs 5) Tried different kernel versions (all 2.4.x, running 2.4.4-ac6) 6) strace mount -a doesn't show anything obvious (to me) except at the end +++ killed by SIGSEGV +++ Mounting each partition individually, as stated above, works for some reason. Before I reinstall, as this is really difficult for me to troubleshoot, anybody more experienced have any suggestions? Nothing except mount and dmesg appear to be having trouble. The machines running stable are all yawning ;-) I hope it's not bad hardware. hi, yes I_am_familiar with setting up sound on Linux. Basically, my problem is - there is not a sound card as such. The bash man page states that parameter expansion is performed after tilde expansion and obviously $user is not a valid login name (at least not for our purposes). UDMA with Kernel-2.4.3 and hdparm -X68
I just got a new Maxtor HD to go along with my IBM hd. With Kernel 2.4.3 and using >hdparm -d 1 to set DMA on, i get disk reads of 30MB/sec on the IBM. The Maxtor DiaMax UDMA (ATA 100) yields only 3 MB/sec. The IBM is auto detected at UDMA mode4. With the Maxtor i have to run >hdparm -X68 -d 1 to set the xfermode to UDMA mode4.But obviously it doesn't work (the drive info still says maxDMA=0(slow)). If i use Kernel 2.2.18pre21 the -X68 option of hdparm successfully enables the Maxtor to transfer at UDMA mode4 (about 33 MB/sec) even though the drive info still reports maxDMA=0(slow). Any thoughts on getting the Maxtor to be enabled with Kernel-2.4.3. Is this a known issue with DMA that will change in later kernels? Or should i just replace the Maxtor with another IBM?

Nope, you're wrong. I wrote the scripts above with the explicit goal, that every user keeps control over his own ~/.fetchmailrc file, being able to change passwords and host information etc. Root however has the priviledge to allow which users have their mail automagically fetched on dial-up. Hence the /etc/fetchmail-users file. As you can see, I check for a ~$user/.fetchmailrc file (in the user's home directory) and the `su` command below executes fetchmail with an EUID of the user. > If you pass control to the users, you could do > > for i in $(ls /home/); do > if [ -f /home/$i/.fetchmailrc ] && \ >[ -f /home/$i/email-addresses ]; then > > > su -c "fetchmail -d 900" $user Which pretty much does the same thing as my code. Question: What is the ~/email-addresses file for? > I'd recommend the "-k" option for an "official", the "-a" option for a > "family box". "-k" means the mail stays on the server (because people might > also want to have it at home), "-a" for a final destination (fetch all > regardless). I'd say, the best way to keep that information would be the ~/.fetchmailrc file of the user. So he can decide whether he wants to keep or fetch all mail and can even differentiate on an account basis. Cheers, Viktor -- Viktor Rosenfeld WWW: http://www.informatik.hu-berlin.de/~rosenfel/

You really need to narrow it down to whether it's the mp3 player or the soundcard causing this problem! Try playing a "wav" file through your speakers and see if comes out through only one speaker. Or try using a different MP3 player such as "mpg123". There are also some sound monitors which will graphically display the output per channel (sort of like a graphical equilizer). If you see the meter bouncing on both the left and right but sound only from one speaker, something with the soundcard ain't right;) Scott

I have several machines, one acts as a mailserver, with an MX entry and all. The others are clients that know to use the server as a smarthost. When I send mail to a local account, I get an error from the smarthost server saying that the address [EMAIL PROTECTED] can't be found. But when I add the @whizzird.net to the address it works fine. These boxes are running the sendmail from testing (the one from stable stopped working on me). I tried to use the sendmail address rewriting mini-HOWTO's advice to allow it to send local mail, but the sendmail I have doesn't like the format of the file for some reason. Is there an easy way to send local mail with sendmail? Thanks, Jason

Then add to /etc/exports the directories you wish to export. The NFS Howto has good instructions on all of this. It should be in /usr/share/doc/HOWTO/. Once it's all set up, you should be able to use the `mount' command (see the manpage) as root to make the /cdrom directory on the desktop available on the laptop, Jim

Etherenet card problem.
Hello, I'd like some help with a problem I'm having. I've tried to install two varients of Debian: 2.2r2 and Progeny 1.0. In both of those cases I have failed to get my ethernet card working. I have two cards laying around, a Linksis LNE100TX and a Kingston KNE110TX. Both are tulip variants. Both worked under Mandrake 7.2. Niether is working under Debian. They are both detected, the tulip module is loaded (I do know how to use modprobe and lsmod :). I am not a Linux newbie, but I'm a newbie to Debian. I have played around with other Debian boxen my friends had around, and apt-get is really cool, as is the rock-hard stability. I decided I was tired of Mandrake and RedHat, as they are both flaky, and I have NEVER manually installed an RPM upgrade without having to use --FORCE. Thanks for any help you can give me. --Aaron

System Limits (in Debian)
Hi all, I have a site running Debian GNU/Linux 2.2 and caucho servlet (www.caucho.com) for serving web games. It's a P III 700 Mhz with 512 Mb and it's in limit. A technical staff sugested to change some system limits as bellow. I changed at the machine, rebooted and didnt work. Can anyone help me? TIA, Paulo Henrique We looked into the problem you reported. I think I know what the problem is. The maximum number of file handles per process is set too low on the MPGC server. Each connection requires one or more file handles so the maximum number of file handles is a hard limit for the maximum number of concurrent connections. The log files show that the number of users has almost doubled the last few weeks (that's great) the logfiles also shows that the file handle problem kicks in when the number of users started growing. This started on Sunday April 8. In order to fix this problem you have to set some settings on the server. You use a Debian Linux distribution and I do not know 100% sure how to do it on Debian Linux but on Redhat and SuSE Linux it can be done like this: As root edit the file _/etc/sysctl.conf_ and add the following two lines (or change the existing entries to match them) fs.file-max = 10240 fs.inode-max = 40960 And for the file _/etc/security/limits.conf_ add these two lines (or change the existing entries to match them) * soft nofile 1024 * hard nofile 10240 I'm afraid you need to reboot the server (the machine) to activate these changes. Please note that I am not sure that these changes are correct on a Debian Linux distribution, have your system administrator double check these settings. With the file handle limits raised like this the MPGC should be able to accept 10 times more concurrent connections as currently the case. -- Paulo Henrique B de Oliveira Gerente de Operações - Linux Solutions - http://www.linuxsolutions.com.br O maior conteúdo de Linux em língua portuguesa - OLinux - http://www.olinux.com.br (21)526-7262 ramal 31

CGA adapter
Hello, I have installed an old CGA video card in my computer, next to my VGA card. The system boots with (view on, I mean) the VGA card. When I load the modules fbcon-hga.o and hgafb.o, the CGA card takes over the video output and the VGA card drops dead (well, it stops working). When I start X, X is displayed through the VGA card on the VGA monitor. So then I have two views: X on VGA and a console on CGA. But, when I am under X, the console stops working, until I switch to console mode. I want to use the CGA as a logscreen for syslogd. So, how can you let the CGA card working while you are under X, or how must you configure Linux when you want to use two videocards in general? Thanks in advance, Sebastiaan -- $ man clone BUGS Main feature not yet implemented...

SiS6326 problem
ive got this graphics card (SIS6326) and i have a big problem with setting the resolution and size of the screen. im working with XF86Config file and im trying to put those modes, but i always get too big screen for my monitor. i dont have any virtula lines in the file.. but i just dont know how to properly set those settings in Screeen Section. the card has 4 megs of ram, monitor specs are: H-frequency 30 - 70kHz, V-frequency 50 - 110Hz. im using 1024x768 at 85Hz refresh rate unred windoze, and i would like to run that under potato as well... i used -bpp 16 option in the Xservers file (i still have xdm by the way, but its a different problem...) once when i used bpp 24 i could set the resolution and size i wanted but the right part of the screen was like scrambled or so, of green color, and duplicated image of the desktop. so i changed to bpp 16 but now i have no idea how to fix it. and one more thing. ive read somewhere that every time i change XF86Config file (placed in /etc/X11) i should copy it to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 for the changes to take effenct. and i noticed that if i dont copy it there - i got same stuff.. is it right?? because i taked over that problem with some people and they told me that they didnt have to do it.. well enough.. If anyone similar to this problem could help me, please? i bow to the masters of linux..

Triple Boot
Does anyone have any experience with a Debian/Win2k/Solaris setup on the same system? I just bought a new drive for my system at home and would like to add Solaris 8 to my existing setup of Debian/Win2k. My concern is that during the Solaris install I will hose lilo. Obviously I could backup lilo, but I was curious if there is a way to prevent Solaris from overwriting lilo? I apologize in advance if this isn't the appropriate list to post to. ximian gnome and libzvt2
I'm having trouble updating several packages from woody and red-carpet-ximian.com. And is 'gnome-pty-helper.1.gz' or other files going to be a problem in future compatibility between debian and ximian gnome packages? Thanks. Anm

Instead of exiting at line 13, break out of that loop into an outer one which sleeps for as long as you are prepared to let your network be down. 2) Touch a file when you start your loop, remove it when the network checks OK before you exit. Check for the presence of the file right at the start and exit if it exists. BTW isn't your exit in the wrong branch? If you restart the network, you need to loop back to ping again to see if it's now up. If ping succeeds (0), you exit. sshd_exchange_identification problem
debians, i (we) operate a number of Potato servers in different locations. After a hack attack on one of our machines, we reinstalled it (using pretty much defaults), and now we're having problems connecting to it from some machines. specifically, the problems relate to the sshd / hosts.deny interaction, which we have set to ALL: PARANOID. scenario is this: the new server is piper @ 130.58.xxx.xxx [1]. i can reproduce the problem with the two machines on my desk, one of which can connect, the other of which fails. [1] yes, gabe, it's the machine you're thinking off. = (A) the machine is called fishbowl.madduck.net, which is a CNAME to fishbowl.dyn.madduck.net, a dynamically changeable address (bind 9, TTL 3 minutes). currently, it resolves to 130.58.82.172, which points back to d172.sproul.swarthmore.edu. fishbowl uses ns1.madduck.net as nameserver, which i told to resolve the ip back to its name. so: fishbowl:~> host fishbowl.madduck.net fishbowl.madduck.netCNAME fishbowl.dyn.madduck.net fishbowl.dyn.madduck.netA 130.58.82.172 fishbowl:~> host 130.58.82.172 Name: fishbowl.dyn.madduck.net Address: 130.58.82.172 but on the new machine: piper:~> host fishbowl.madduck.net fishbowl.madduck.netCNAME fishbowl.dyn.madduck.net fishbowl.dyn.madduck.netA 130.58.82.172 piper:~> host 130.58.82.172 Name: d172.sproul.swarthmore.edu Address: 130.58.82.172 using RSA authentication between the two stock ssh installs (OpenSSH 1.2.3, protocol 1.5), I can successfully log in to my account on piper. = (B) the other machine is called diamond.madduck.net, and it's pretty much the same DNS situation: diamond:~> host diamond.madduck.net diamond.madduck.net A 130.58.82.235 diamond:~> host 130.58.82.235 Name: diamond.madduck.net Address: 130.58.82.235 but on the new machine: piper:~> host diamond.madduck.net shbowl.dyn.madduck.net A 130.58.82.235 piper:~> host 130.58.82.235 Name: d235.sproul.swarthmore.edu Address: 130.58.82.235 this machine cannot log in to piper: diamond:~> ssh -v piper SSH Version OpenSSH-1.2.3, protocol version 1.5. Gnome desktop icons disappeared in unstable
Hi. I recently dist-upgrade'd my 'unstable' box, and found that the Gnome desktop icons (both those I had defined and those which were predefined in the packages) were gone. They still seem to exist in my gnome-desktop, but they just don't show up on the screen. I also noticed that my right-button no longer seems to bring up the relevant menu when clicked on the background and that I can no longer create desktop icons at all. I have tried downgrading gmc and mc-common, but this does not restore the functionality. I have been browsing this list and the Debian bug tracking system, but did not see this described anywhere else. It is as if the desktop functionality has been "turned off" somehow. Does anyone have a good idea about how to deal with this? Dan P.S. I am using gmc_4.5.51-17_i386.deb, and would guess that whatever changed to break my system has occurred in the past 3 weeks, since that's the period of my updates (more or less). Note that I am not sure that gmc is the culprit -- that's just a guess.

I can have several kernels bootable by lilo, as long as > the reside on the same root or boot (if you have a separate /boot > partition) partition. Unfortunately you haven't said what you are trying to do and what error messages you get when it doesn't work. (What does "recognize" mean?) > Maybe i overlooked something, could anyone give me an exerpt from > lilo.conf, where lilo boots two different Linux distro from two > different root partition? Well, firstly, you presumably recognise that there's only one MBR, so the last instance of running /sbin/lilo (from any of your linuxes) is the one that takes effect. Usually one would only run lilo from one version, so that you only have to maintain one instance of /etc/lilo.conf. If your two kernels are each contained in their respective partitions, hda8 and hda9, then both partitions must be mounted when you run /sbin/lilo. For example, if you're running with hda8 as root, hda9 might be mounted as /mnt, and the two kernels will be image=/boot/kernel-for-hda8 and image=/mnt/boot/kernel-for-hda9 (you can leave out "boot/" if there are symlinks in the respective root directories.) Next, how to set the root device for each kernel. There are two ways: move the root= line from the global part of the file (you've probably got it near the top) and put it into each image= paragraph: image=/boot/kernel-for-hda8 root=/dev/hda8 read-only ... etc. image=/mnt/boot/kernel-for-hda9 root=/dev/hda9 ... etc. The other method is to leave it out altogether and use rdev on each kernel to set the device, e.g. rdev /mnt/boot/kernel-for-hda9 /dev/hda9 (assuming you can write to /dev/hda9) Actually there's no harm in doing both. Obviously you leave the boot= line alone: boot=/dev/hda as this determines where lilo writes the boot sector, to the MBR. What happens when you run /sbin/lilo is that lilo sees where all the kernels are (in terms of filesystems on partitions), works out where they are physically on the disk (in terms of blocks) and builds a map of those blocks. It also notes down the corresponding root devicenames (and all the other info in the image= paragraph). When you boot and the MBR runs, the kernel is loaded by block numbers off the disk, and any root= value is applied. If there wasn't a root= then it uses a magic offset in the kernel just loaded (which is what you can set with rdev). If you have a huge disk, it makes sense to collect all the kernels into the "classic" /boot partition near the start. But kernels can be placed in all sorts of different partitions/filesystems so long as /sbin/lilo can see them all mounted (and listed in /etc/lilo.conf) when you run it. Hope that makes sense. Then after the interface comes up you could have a short script that just calls `route` to set the correct route. If it's a dynamic IP and route this might be a little tricky though. There are other similar methods for 'down' to remove the routes.. -- Michael Janssen - Jamuraa - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - [EMAIL PROTECTED] GPG Fingerprint: 87F1 92C4 44AA 4105 B1C4 EDEC D995 9620 C00E 9159 pgpCAuuM256IS.pgp Description: PGP signature

Then I added myself to the group, of course. At first I was hesitant to add the execute bit, but then I couldn't store executable stuff on the windows partition. mind, I mount it with 'nosuid' to be sure that I don't have any weird hybrid viruses sneaking up on me through windows.. probably paranoia on my part though. -- Michael Janssen - Jamuraa - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - [EMAIL PROTECTED] GPG Fingerprint: 87F1 92C4 44AA 4105 B1C4 EDEC D995 9620 C00E 9159 pgpO26Vi7wqCG.pgp Description: PGP signature
