Woody: Remembering Desktop Assignment?

2004-01-08 Thread Joel Konkle-Parker
Is it possible to make Gnome 1.4 / Sawfish on Woody "remember" which
desktop an application is placed in? For example, when I download
something in Galeon, it opens up gtm to manage it. I usually move that
out of the way in desktop 4. But if it's not running already, it opens
up in whichever desktop I'm currently in. Is it somehow possible to
"assign" gtm to desktop 4?

I can't help, but I do have a question: Do you need to use a cross over

What's the address of "their site"? I'm curious to see what you saw.

mc (Midnight Commander) is a text-based file manager; as such, it
certainly would not replace a gui desktop environment such as Gnome. A
gui version of mc is gmc (Gnome Midnight Commander), but again, it's
just a file manager, not a replacement for window manager/tools/etc.

   apt-cache show mc
and
   apt-cache show gmc

Almost certainly not, not in the default gnome anyway. More than one
clock was deemed unnecessary. Perhaps someone has ported it to
gnome2...?

DHCP over bridge between WiFi and wired

2004-01-08 Thread Barak Pearlmutter
I have a WAP which serves DHCP requests.
I have a laptop with an 802.11b interface. The laptop connects
to the WAP and gets its IP address via DHCP.
I have another device (Grandstream BudgeTone-101, a non-wireless SIP
phone) which uses DHCP as it boots.
The laptop has an otherwise-unused wired ethernet interface.
I would like to use the laptop as a bridge, thus allowing the SIP
phone to plug into the laptop while I'm laying in bed.

$ grep -A9 br0 /etc/network/interfaces

iface br0 inet dhcp
pre-up egrep --silent '^3c59x' /proc/modules || modprobe 3c59x
pre-up /etc/init.d/pcmcia start || true
pre-up cardctl insert || true
pre-up ifconfig eth0 down || true
pre-up ifconfig eth1 down || true
bridge_ports all
bridge_maxwait 5
bridge_stp on

The bridge seems to work fine, except that the SIP phone never gets
its IP address. Ie DHCP does not seem to completely cross the bridge.

Any hints?

I think things do not go like this.
If you comment out some lines from your sources.list and then apt-get update, you will
build another database with
only the packages of the lines not commented out.

serial terminal and reboot troubleshooting with new kernel

2004-01-08 Thread truck loser
Recently I installed woody with the 2.2 kenel. When I upgraded to the 2.4 kernel I was left with too nerve racking problems.
First, my serial terminal no longer prints out the startup and shutdown messages. Also, no iptables logging is showing up on the terminal (but is on monitor).
Second, I cannot reboot. Computer shuts down, says Rebooting... then I just get a blank screen.
Anyone have any ideas?

If you generally use dselect or aptitude, you can use '=' to put the

it's 'free/libre' software (aka open source).

man pages are the best resource for figuring out 'syntax'
questions. So,
  man mount

> It's also hard to tell exactly where I am because the Linux
> prompt doesn't display the working directory,

The prompt can be configured to display anything you want pretty
much. For instance, this configuration will display the name of
the current directory *without* including the preceding path:
  PS1='[EMAIL PROTECTED]: \W]\$ '
The above line is in /etc/profile so it is a 'global' setting;
you could also include it in ~/.bashrc for a more 'local'
configuration. Also this environmental variable needs to be
'exported', so in the same file you would have another line that
reads like so:
  export PS1

Failing all of the above, there is of course the basic 'pwd'
command that reveals your 'present working directory'.

It's a good idea to bone up on some basic command-line commands.
It makes working with *nix kind of funky when you start to learn
your way around the command-line :-)

I sure you could google a beginner tutorial or two without two
much trouble...

'mount -t ext2 /dev/hda3 /wherever/you/want/to/put/it', if it's a
standard Linux filesystem. If it's a DOS filesystem, substitute 'vfat'
for 'ext2'.

If you just give a single argument to mount, it interprets it as a mount
point (the place in the current filesystem onto which to graft the newly
mounted filesystem), and looks through /etc/fstab to try to find the
filesystem type and the device to mount.

The installer's shell is pretty minimal for space reasons. 'pwd' will
tell you your current working directory. In a proper shell in an
installed system, you'll probably have a decent prompt preconfigured,
but if not then type the following (or variations) to put the current
working directory in your prompt:

  PS1='[EMAIL PROTECTED] \w\$ '

Again, that's the installer shell for you. :) (I did think it had 'help
foo', though.) There's plenty of information at .

All the above said, I'm not entirely clear on what your actual problem
is. Why do you need to mount an extra filesystem by hand from the
installer?

Frontends are overkill. Two options on how to do this better with
just the ppp package with no frontends:

With any modem: Add the "demand" option to the PPP configuration.

With external, non-USB modems (recommended): Add the "persist" option
and rename /etc/ppp/no_ppp_on_boot to /etc/ppp/ppp_on_boot. To
connect: Turn modem on. To disconnect: Turn modem off.

Thanks, Uwe.

After my experience with MEPIS, I was kind of curious about the
relationship between Knoppix and MEPIS from this respect. With MEPIS
they clearly state that the kernel is altered, and one shouldn't use
apt-get upgrade, dist-upgrade, etc. But apparently Knoppix is built in a
different way and doesn't present the same kind of problem? If this is
the case, I think I'm going to give it a shot.

psmouse module problems on boot in linux 2.6.0

2004-01-08 Thread Michael Graham
Hi,
On my laptop I have both a touchpad and a usb mouse. The touchpad
uses the psmouse module, /etc/modules tells the kernel to load this at
boot. The usb mouse uses the appropriate usb modules and is loaded using
hotpluging.

My problem is that if the usb mouse is not connected at boot the
touchpad doesn't work. The module has been loaded, but doesn't seem to
notice the touchpad. If I remove the module and reload it works perfectly.

The only difference I can find is that when the usb mouse is plugged in
on boot and the psmouse module is loaded the line

input: PS/2 Generic Mouse on isa0060/serio1

is printed (this also happens when I reload the module), but if the usb
mouse is not connected on boot this doesn't get printed.

Any help you can give would be much appreciated.

None of the mirrors went down, as far as I know. Unless their admin's

I run "archivemail" in a weekly cronjob to clear out mail older than two weeks
from my Debian folders (that works out to be about as large as I can be
bothered to let mutt deal with).

Relevant bits from the script:

export ARCHIVEDIR=/home/rob/mail/archive/$(date +"%Y%U")/
# archive Debian list mail after two weeks
mkdir $ARCHIVEDIR/debian || true
for i in ~/mail/lists/debian/*(/);
do archivemail $OPTIONS -d14 -o$ARCHIVEDIR/debian $i;
done

This archives mail into a directory udner ~/mail/archive/ named after the year and the
week of the year.

By way of possible explanation ...

We've had a long series of "Why can't Debian do what RedHat/Mandrake
do?" questions recently. In some cases, the question is fair: something
that Debian doesn't do that would seemingly be consistent with
Debian's goals and would make the user experience better. In
many-to-most cases, however, Debian *can* do what they're asking.
It may not do so by default, often for security reasons.

So, while you probably didn't intend it as such, any question phrased as
"RH does this; why doesn't Debian?" or similar tends to inflame a sore
nerve.

I think that most of us would much rather see a question phrased as,

"I would like to do X. How can I do so using Debian
[stable|testing|unstable]?"

than,

"RedHat did X for me. Why can't Debian?"

Forgive me if I missed something as I am entering in, in the middle, but
Godel's theorem isn't of much use in everyday life. Its useful in that
it states how far you can, or more precisely can't go with formal logic.

It basically states that in any formal logic system you either can't
prove everything covered by that system, or you will be able to prove
paradoxes (and that includes the logic system used for modern day
mathematics. And there are paradoxes in mathematics, but as of now
nowhere important afaik (it gives things that you can usually assume
whichever way is comfortable to you and it won't matter)

It did come in the middle of an epic three volume work by Alfred
North Whitehead and Bertrand Russell called Principia Mathematica that
tried to build a paradox-less logical basis to mathematical proof, and
showed that what they were doing was actually impossible (that work has
very great significance all the same)

As for disproving it. If you disprove it then go ahead and check where
you were wrong. Since it was proven mathematically and not physically,
you can take it as truth.

There's a mailcheck builtin in the gkrellm package, and also a plugin for
gkrellm called gkrellm-mailwatch. I like gkrellm and find it quite useful.

apt upgrade stops with "foomatic-filters (3.0.0-20031207-1)"

2004-01-08 Thread MJ Inabnit
I did an update and dist-upgrade today (8Jan04) and all went well (as I expected it
to) until I got to "foomatic-filters (3.0.0-20031207-1)".
Xterm snip
After unpacking 0B of additional disk space will be used.
Setting up foomatic-filters (3.0.0-20031207-1) ...
Configuration file `/etc/foomatic/filter.conf'
==> File on system created by you or by a script.
==> File also in package provided by package maintainer.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : start a new shell to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** filter.conf (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ?y

Here is where the system just "hangs out" for lack of a better descriptor. The
terminal is okay but the script is just sitting here. Several hours have passed and
it's still just sitting there--no errors--just sitting there doing nothing at all!
I've killed it several times and restarted, but it always does the same thing.

How do I get this script to finish?

Thank you.

Wishing you well.

iirc gpppon should show you that you are connected, it could be that
you are experiencing permission problems. Try running pon from the
command line as the user and make sure that it gives you output.
iirc you need to set special permissions for it, the permissions for
pon and poff weren't enough.

Oddball unfsd behavior

2004-01-08 Thread June Tate
I have recently run into problems with the unfsd server reporting the
following error in the file server's daemon.log:

fd cache inconsistency!

At around the same time on the clients in the cluster, files end up
"dropping out of sight" and return an "Input/Output Error" message -- I
can't even get the files' inode number by doing an 'ls -di '.
In the client's syslog, I end up with the following messages:

kernel: nfs_refresh_inode: inode 55279643 mode changed, 0120777 to
0100644

This issue seems to only crop up when we update files directly on the
file server instead of going through an NFS mount.

I've dug and dug around on the web for an answer to this particular
issue, but haven't actually found an answer to it. Both the clients and
the server are running a vanilla kernel version 2.4.18 straight out of
the Debian apt archives.

Any ideas or comments are welcome. =op

P.S. I just had a thought when writing this email that it might be
related to the client-side caching of file stats. If one of the clients
is reading from a file, and then the file is updated outside of NFS at
the same time, would this cause a similar problem?

Look at Gkrellm instead. Besides mail check, it does lots of other
neat things. It replaced a bunch of applets and made possible ten
other things I couldn't do before.

I'm not sure what you're asking for is that practical. My experience with
doing software development for embedded Linux systems (my day job) is that
the toolchain that one uses is dependent upon several factors that are not
particularly generic. Like: which libc are you using, which kernel
version, which gcc/g++ version you need, which target architecture, which
patches you need/don't need applied, etc., etc. There are precompiled
toolchains available for many combinations of these things and usually you
would find them where a particular target architecture project is located.
I've only been able to use a precompiled toolchain a couple of times and
mostly have had to build my own toolchain, which, I admit is not a very
pleasant thing to have to do. The point I'm trying to make is that there
are so many variables that I'm not sure the toolchain packages that
resulted would be that useful to that many people.

On a related subject, if you are faced with the need to actually build a
cross-compiling toolchain, then you should visit
(if you aren't already aware of this).
Dan Kegel has done some fantastic work in taking SOME of the pain out of
the building cross toolchains.

I have done it by installing it on IDE drive, compiling my own kernel,
changed /etc/fstab and /etc/lilo.conf, changed /dev/hda to /dev/hde
wherever I found it and cloned the whole system to SATA drive...

Anyway, just now I am trying to create sarge netinst CD with 2.4.23

If I understand what Virtual PC does properly, the actual hardware
inside the Mac is somewhat irrelevant; you'd need to figure out what
network hardware Virtual PC is emulating and use a driver for that.

You'll almost certainly get noticably better performance, and not have
an intermediate layer of Microsoft, if you installed Debian (PPC) on
the Macintosh directly. The downside is that you won't be able to use
Debian and Macintosh programs at the same time, since you can only be
booted into one OS or the other. Maybe there's something like VMWare

You could try the Libranetppp.
It will supply you with a full on-screen log/analysis complete with byte
read-out and other applicables if you want to sit around and watch. If
you don't, just minimize it, pull it up again in case of disconnections
or whatever. It operates on a simple click connect/disconnect, so it
sounds as though that's what you are looking for.

They have an excellent adminmenu/Xadminmenu setup that is great for
newbies, also. I'm not at my main machine at the moment. I could post
the appropriate entry for your apt/sources list later, though, if you
require it, or if you need it sooner, drop by the forums on the site.

David.

howto: file system activity to stop xscreensaver running?

2004-01-08 Thread Nano Nano
I have Gaim set to go autoaway after 2 minutes of inactivity,
and my xscreensaver to go on after 3 minutes (I just like it like that).

I also have a camera and the motion package installed, so I trigger an
action like create a .jpg whenever anything moves in front of the
camera.

I'd like to write a script so that whenever such a file is created, the
"xscreensaver inactivity" timer is reset, so that when I'm sitting in my
chair reading a web page not moving the mouse, Gaim won't go autoaway
nor will xscreensaver activate.

Can I do that?

Re: USB mass storage mapping problem

2004-01-08 Thread Andrew Perrin
You can't mount the scsi generic (sg) device; you need to map the
associated disk. Assuming the LITE-ON device from your sg_scan is a scsi
removable (sr) device such as a CD-ROM, your SD reader should be sda. You
can check this with:

fdisk /dev/sda

to make sure you're right. If so, you can:

mount -tvfat -oumask= /dev/sda1 /mnt/sdcard

Cheers,
ap

USB mass storage mapping problem

2004-01-08 Thread steve
Hello, does anyone know what I might be missing with trying to get a valid
device for an usb SD card reader?

Thanks for any input,
Steve

sg_scan -i and sg_map show the following:
bash-2.03# sg_scan -i
/dev/sg0: scsi0 channel=0 id=0 lun=0 [em] type=5
LITE-ON LTR-48246SSS06 [wide=0 sync=0 cmdq=0 sftre=0 pq=0x0]
/dev/sg1: scsi0 channel=0 id=1 lun=0 [em] type=5
CD-ROMDrive/F5A B1.4 [wide=0 sync=0 cmdq=0 sftre=0 pq=0x0]
/dev/sg2: scsi1 channel=0 id=0 lun=0 [em] type=0
Generic USB SD Reader 2.00 [wide=0 sync=0 cmdq=0 sftre=0 pq=0x0]
bash-2.03# sg_map
/dev/sg0 /dev/scd0
/dev/sg1 /dev/scd1
/dev/sg2

sg2 is not mountable:
bash-2.03# mount -t vfat /dev/sg2 /camera
mount: /dev/sg2 is not a block device

The cd is mountable under two devices:
bash-2.03# mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd1 /cdrom
mount: block device /dev/scd1 is write-protected, mounting read-only
bash-2.03# mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr1 /cdrom
mount: block device /dev/sr1 is write-protected, mounting read-only

my kern.log
Jan 7 01:03:37 debian kernel: host/uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0xb800, IRQ 5
Jan 7 01:03:37 debian kernel: usb.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus

Jan 7 01:03:37 debian kernel: USB Mass Storage support registered.

Vendor: CONCORD Model: DIGITAL CAMERARev: 1.00
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02

I suggest, if you know the full path to a file, then _first_ use that
with dpkg:

   dpkg -S /usr/include/unix.h

That way, you will get the definitive answer -- in this case:

   dpkg: /usr/include/unix.h not found.

Without the path to a file, dpkg -S gives you every package that has a
file that matches the regular expression, in your case:

   unix.h

which happens to match:

   libc6-dev: /usr/include/rpc/auth_unix.h

Is my text not wrapping? I'm using mozilla-thunderbird, and I have it
configured to wrap plain text messages at 72 chars. However, I compose
my mail with the HTML editor, but when I hit send and am asked if I
want to send HTML or Plain Text, I always choose Plain Text when
sending to this list.

I checked the other messages from you, and they seem to be fine. It
looks like the message I complained about was the only one without line
wrapping.

Okay, that helps. Thinking back on that, I think I created that message
on another machine; I'll check the settings on that box when I get the

Assuming it's done the same way here, SA processes the mail adding
X-SPAM-STATUS: headers. In your .procmailrc, you have a recipe
that looks for that header and acts accordingly. Hence, .forward is
irrelevant to SA.

A what? "man procmailex" has examples in it showing how to do this.

If procmail is set up as the system MDA (as it is on most modern
Linuxes), plunking the |/usr/bin/procmail thing in ~/.forward will
invoke procmail on incoming mail. Depending on your MTA, the contents
of .forward will be different. The one above is for exim. man
procmail explains it.

I'm a little bit confused, since neither of my Woody nor Sid systems
has /usr/include/unix.h. Also, using apt-file I don't see *any*
package that has it.

What stuff? Perhaps that will answer my above question.

True enough.

Sometimes this happens because a file (usually a configuration file)
is created in a package's post-install step. However, like I said
before, I don't see any likely candidates; I'm wondering how this file
came to be in the first place.

That is called "trolling." Please don't.

My ~/.forward file has this one-liner:

I don't remember whether that line was for procmail or

There's no /usr/include/unix.h anywhere in the distribution. Are you
sure you're looking for the right file?

If you have a second machine or other backup system (ahem), then it is
advisable to save your data there and remake your filesystems in
ext[23] or ResierFS when installing Debian. Write support for BSD
filesystems, while present in Linux, is not battle-hardened.

Do you have a .procmailrc? I think it's a lot more powerful than a .forward

access to /dev/sound,/dev/dsp for current physical user

2004-01-08 Thread Rohit Kumar Mehta
Hi I was wondering if anyone knew a clean way to make it so the user
running any kind of Xwindows session
is the only one who can access the sound device. It would be nice to
make /dev/sound writable by any of our students,
but I know it will not be long before they will start ssh'ing to
machines and start blasting the people working on them
with whatever soundbytes they can think of.

I changed the --disable-sound lines to --enable-sound in gdm.conf, but I
really don't know what that was supposed to do.
I was thinking I insert a few lines in every file under
/etc/X11/gdm/Sessions such that it would make /dev/sound and /dev/dsp
writable by username. This solution seems ugly to me. Can anyone think
of a nice way to do this?

Thanks!

Thanks for the attempts to help all, but nobody seems to be able to
answer
the question of why dpkg (or apt-get) won't install all of hylafax's
files.

As the option of reinstalling the system is out of my hands, I've ended
up
just extracting the binaries from the .deb archives and the configs
from the
source package and copying them into place by hand, then fixing what's
wrong/missing by hand.

Now I can actually evaluate the program to see if it does what I need it

I'm just praying nothing breaks later.

Hello all,

I am a newbie to Debian and I made a booboo.. While prepping a system
for production use, I accidentally overwrote /usr/include/unix.h with the
unix.h that comes from the imap2002e library (used by PHP to enable it to
use POP and IMAP protocols)...

So, now I cant get some stuff to compile due to the header file being
wrong...

My initial thought was "Well, if Debian's package management is
anything like Redhat's, I should be able to find out what package owns that
file, and then I can reinstall the package."

   So, I do a:

	dpkg -S unix.h

And it gives me no results... Well, gives me an auth_unix.h file, which
isnt what I'm looking for...

My question is: If Debian packages are just as good if not better than
Redhat RPM's, then why can I not find out what package owns that file?

Am I using the wrong command?

Thanks,
Brad

No. You paid for the memory, you might as well get your money's worth

When a program requests some memory, some of the disk cache will be
flushed and the memory given to the program. It is not a problem, and
it yields a performance advantage.

So, to be clear: you're logged in on this machine, you type 'ping
192.168.1.1', and nothing happens? Is the physical infrastructure
working? (Are all the cables connected, do you have the right blinky
lights everywhere?) If that all works, what do 'ifconfig eth0' and
'route -n' say?

> eth1 (Ethernet connected to my LAN)
> IP 10.0.0.1
> DNS 192.168.1.1
> Gateway 192.168.1.43
> Subnet 255.0.0.0

"Gateway" isn't something you want to define on more than one
interface; if you do define it, if needs to be an address on the same
network (so, in this case, a 10.x.x.x address). How exactly are you
specifying "gateway" and "DNS" here?

It looks like the setup you want is:

-- eth0 is on 192.168.1.43/24
-- eth1 is on 10.0.0.1/8
-- The default route is via 192.168.1.1 (on eth0)
-- The DNS server is 192.168.1.43, which happens to be on eth0's
   network
-- (Optional) ipmasq from eth1 to eth0

And none of the settings you've given so far contradict this. :-)

No; if anything, you'll see a performance improvement, since in some
cases Linux can use that memory instead of going to disk. Having
actual free memory would be wasting that resource.

> and if there is, how can I free it?

You don't, but if programs actually legitimately need the data space,
the kernel will shrink the cache and buffer space.

On my server running Debian Woody, it's also part of the apache-ssl

There was a thread about this a while back, called "aspell with mutt",
if I remember correctly.

Brian Nelson ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) explained the problem with aspell then.
He said:

"The problem with aspell 0.33 and earlier was that the aspell utility
and the aspell-en dictionary were distributed together in a single
tarball, so it was assumed that the entire contents of the tarball were
under the aspell utility license (LGPL). However, when aspell 0.50 was
released, the aspell utility and the aspell-en were separated into
distinct tarballs. When I was packaging 0.50 a little over a year ago,
I noticed that aspell-en actually had a unique license with wording that
did not comply with the DFSG. However, the validity of the non-free
license was questionable since, at least in the US, wordlists are not
copyrightable. Furthermore, the questionable wording in the license was
not actually written by the author of the wordlist (someone at DEC, a US
company), but rather someone who had reused the wordlist and basically
stated, "as far as I know, you may use this wordlist for non-commercial
purposes." The original author probably never claimed a copyright
because it wasn't copyrightable in his or her country.

"In my opinion, the only problem with the aspell package in woody was
the/usr/share/doc/aspell-en/copyright stating the license was LGPL when
in fact in was not. I did not see any real problem with the terms of
the license. However, the stable release manager felt otherwise and
removed the entire package from main.

"However, since the removal broke a lot of dependencies in stable,
aspell 0.33 will be reintroduced to main in 3.0r3. To comply with the
RM's wishes, I'll have to find a way to replace the "non-free" wordlists
with the updated free version, but it will come back pretty soon, I
hope."

HTH,
Jacob

When a game tries to load libGL.so, libGLcore also needs to be loaded,
but this step is done automatically by the glibc dynamic linker. Even
when /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 is being loaded, the glibc dynamic linker tries
to load /usr/lib/tls/libGL.so.1 first.

That is probably why it works when you rename or delete the tls
directory.

This issue was reported
