Like all good companies, they did not make the RAW format universal,

companies, got the needed specs. There was a story about this maybe 2

This is true! The companies are bad!!

Look for UFRAW and DCRAW.

They should work. Or perhaps a clustered file system that allows the
same disk to be mounted read-write simultaneously by multiple hosts.

Such a disk could be located on the underlying host (=more ubd devices
on the uml linux command line) or remotely using network block devices.

I *think* that the oracle clustered filesystem would do the trick,
although it is more geared towards holding oracle databases. One
problem though: The kernel in the user-mode-linux package has not got
ocfs2 enabled, so you'll need to recompile the package, but it *should*
work...

Hope this helps

But, that's only if I have more than one X-server, correct? I
understood that only one X-server is needed. Am I thinking about that
right? ~Telly

Replying on the list as this may end up in more learning for me as well.

Since the objective is to reduce resource pressure on the system you
may use alternative X-server. I do not know answers but gurus on the
list may give more pointers as to which X-server is most efficient.

As far as only use of alternative display managers is concerned you
can just do apt-get install icewm or xfce4 or matchbox.

Neither. You may just install any window manager you choose and, when
logging in with gdm, pick the appropriate session. Gdm will ask you
whether your choice should be the default session for future logins. You
can switch back and forth any time you like.

Deinstalling gnome is a little more complicated since it consists of a
lot of packages. 'gnome' (or 'gnome-desktop-environment') are just
metapackages that don't contain useful software themselves. They just
depend on a whole lot of packages. That means when you remove them, you
do not necessarily remove the stuff you are interested in.

It will not break your system and there are no webpages discussing this
topic that I know of. What you are about to do is a really easy thing to
do and completely harmless.

You don't have to uninstall anything. Just install a lightweight window
manager such as IceWm and change the preferred x-session-manager to
icewm-session, e.g.:

# aptitude install icewm
# update-alternatives --config x-session-manager
(Select icewm-session from the list.)

that mail has disappeared. (ie, I haven't gotten a Mail delivery

I don't use gmail but my dial-up ISP requires SMTP auth over an
unencrypted connection.

You need your email address in /etc/email-addresses so that exim will
rewrite your from line correctly.

You need a correct line in /etc/exim4/passwd.client

I also needed to add a file to /etc/exim4/conf.d/main called
	000_localmacros

which contains the line:

AUTH_CLIENT_ALLOW_NOTLS_PASSWORDS = TRUE

Without which, exim will not send a password since the connection is not
encrypted; the password goes out in the clear.

Good luck.

Thanks. I realized that by having my google account in
/etc/email-addresses, any mail delivery failures will
go to gmail instead of /var/mail, so I've done the following:

I followed Anoton's suggestion to run dpkg-reconfigure,
added a line to /etc/exim4/passwd.client, and then sent
an email that has gone away. (I expect to get a
mail delivery failure soon in /var/mail.) I then
ran strace on "mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] < foo" (the complete wrong
approach to system administration, but
I figure it's best to use the tools you know...:), but
this was unenlightening.

I'm still confused as to why gmail is in the picture at
all when I run mailx. I did set smtp.gmail as my smtp
smarthost when I ran dpkg-reconfigure, but the only
reference to gmail in /etc/exim4 is in
update-exim4.conf.conf (via grep -iRe 'gmail\|google' *)
Surely the only affect that
file has is on execution of dpkg-reconfigure, no?

Which exim4 config file is telling it to contact google
for smtp?

MAKEDEV is in /sbin and is a shell script (text file) that creates
device nodes in /dev

There is /usr/share/doc/makedev that has a changelog and copyright file.

Do these files still exist where they should?

If you can run that binary, run it as --help or -h. If that doesn't
tell you what it is, try viewing ith with mc's viewer and search for
english phrases (things like built-in error messages); try searching for
"usage".

What this all means is that while e2fsck has fixed the filesystem so
that it is consistant and mountable, in the process you have lost files.
The problem is that unless you're running something like samhain or
tripwire you won't know exactly what has changed. This is one reason
that I run samhain.

Its also why I switched from ext3 to JFS.

In any event, unless you can track everything down, be prepared for a
reinstall. In fact, I would plan ahead for one: ensure that you create
a new full backup of your data and DO NOT overwrite your most recent
backup prior to this corruption. Your system may run for some time
until a missing or corrupted file needs to be accessed then BOOM. So
plan for it. You could even take the time now to make a custom CD
(using debian-cd) of all the packages that you have installed so that
the reinstall only takes 20 minutes or so.

Good luck.

Doug.

[...]
I just upgraded my kernel in Debian testing release from 2.4.27 to
2.6.18 and ran into some problems I would appreciate help with.

I built the kernel from the Debian kernel source package which has
some bug fixes and patches not found in the upstream (official) kernel
sources but I asked around and these don't seem to be related to my
problems. I built the .config from scratch (took 3.5 hours).
Total time for the kernel project was 9 hours heh!

Problem 1:
Since devfs has been replaced by udev (dynamic device naming) there is
no longer a /dev/ttyS0 for my serial modem.

On my Etch system, with udev, /dev/ttyS0 exists. I see that you have "#
CONFIG_SERIAL_8250 is not set" in your .config (line 987 of
). That would explain the missing device entry.

Also this was symlinked to
/dev/modem and that device is also no longer present in 2.6.18. Do I
just need to change /var/lib/setserial/autoserial.conf so it uses
/dev/tty0? How can I create a /dev/modem block device?

Don't do that. /dev/tty0 is definitely not right for the serial modem.
You can either learn about creating udev rules, or you can create a
startup script that creates the desired symbolic link in /dev.

Or you can do what I did: create another directory for persistent
devices, e.g. /usr/local/dev, and put your specialized device nodes and
symbolic links there. Mknod is useful for this (man mknod).

Problem 2:
Something weird is happening with my CDROM.

[...]
Jun  8 16:02:38 netrek kernel: hdc: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
Jun 8 16:02:38 netrek kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Jun 8 16:02:38 netrek kernel: hdc: ATAPI reset complete

However when I removed the file in /tmp and copied it over again this
time it worked instantaneously as it should. So i think my ide/ATAPI
is setup wrong but the .config has so many options i'm not sure which
ones i may have set wrong, I can send you my kernel .config if that
would help.

[...]

Configuring 2.6 kernels was one of the most complicated things I'd ever
done before I got smart and began tweaking the default .config. There
are many things that one can forget, and many parts of the kernel have
complicated dependencies and relationships to one another.

Try to get a Debian stock kernel running on your system first, then
tweak it to your liking and build an optimized kernel if you like.
Probably you left something out of the kernel that allows for
motherboard and/or ide reliability.

Also, try to present only a single issue per help query. Your post is
too big and complicated, and so I'll stop reading here.

If you use Shorewall to help create a firewall, just add:

  - - 1/min:2

after the entries that open ports for ssh.

It limits anyone to 2 tries during any 1 minute interval, then drops
them.

Sorry. I don't know how to handle that using plain IPTables.

You have a corrupted filesystem. Suggest going to single user mode and

Thanks. That did the trick. Even though fsck claimed to have fixed a
bunch of stuff (inodes & other things), should I worry or take care with
anything else?

As always, it depends. What caused the filesystem to corrupt? Is there
anything in lost+found?

Two files. One is a makedev text file (from /usr/share/doc?) about the
program and the author. The other is a binary file. Can run it.

Quite right. In your case, it may not work. If you use your friend's
machine frequently enough, you might want to install a key on it (make
sure to protect it with a strong passphrase). If you are always
bouncing around, that may not be good enough, however. If you have a
laptop and normally use that, then a key-only scheme can probably work
for you.

It all depends on your circumstances.

Somehow, I am not comfortable with this. I have read in many places that key
authentication is the most secure method and I agree with them. However it
is not very convenient. Consider this situation.

Say, I ssh into machineA from machineB. However machineB is not always known
apriori. I can go to my friend's machine and want to ssh into machineA. In
that case, how do I obtain get the key? Carrying the key with a USB stick
is one option. But again that is also inconvenient for me. I guess
convenience and security are opposite ends of the spectrum.

Not exactly answering your question. But I do see a lot of IPs performing
dictionary attacks on my machine. What I do is go through /var/log/auth.log
periodically and add the offending IPs to /etc/hosts.deny . That way, in
future, the offending IPs cannot perform any dictionary attacks. I
currently have around 85 IPs in this list (starting Apr 10, 2007) :-)

You should also disable remote root logins to make the machine more secure.

This problem arose because I have a few hundred of images which are

Dont use GUI for this sort of thing. Write a shell script which contains all
the necessary commands for performing the task. To get list of files, use
vim. You probably need to use commands such as

:!ls -rt *jpg

inside vim. Once the list is generated in your desired order, then generate
the list of new file names.

changing

file2.txt
file3.txt
file1.txt

to

001_file2.txt
002_file3.txt
003_file1.txt

The example I gave above was trivial to say the least.

If you could elaborate on that a bit, it would be helpful to understand
what you mean. But keep in mind that we are talking about some hundreds
of files which appear in random order and one cannot judge where a file
is supposed to be in a time line without first looking at the image file.

AUTH_CLIENT_ALLOW_NOTLS_PASSWORDS = TRUE

Without which, exim will not send a password since the connection is not
encrypted; the password goes out in the clear.

Good luck.

Doug.

Zach

--- original email -

Also this was symlinked to
/dev/modem and that device is also no longer present in 2.6.18. Do I
just need to change /var/lib/setserial/autoserial.conf so it uses
/dev/tty0? How can I create a /dev/modem block device?

Problem 2:
Something weird is happening with my CDROM.

netrek:~# mount /dev/hdc /cdrom
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only

netrek:~# cd /cdrom

netrek:/cdrom# df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on

autorun.exe license.doc readme.docsetup.exe westwood.hlp
autorun.inf maps01.mix readme.txtsidecd01.mix wolapi

netrek:/cdrom# ls -l /tmp/license.doc
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root 26112 Jun 8 16:02 /tmp/license.doc

It took a very long time for such a small file (nearly 40 seconds) and
/var/log/messages showed:

Jun  8 16:02:38 netrek kernel: hdc: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }

So i think my ide/ATAPI
is setup wrong but the .config has so many options i'm not sure which
ones i may have set wrong, I can send you my kernel .config if that would help.

Further I noticed some other messages, possibly related, from boot up
in my /var/log/syslog:

Jun 8 15:47:57 netrek kernel: ide-cd: cmd 0x28 timed out
Jun 8 15:47:57 netrek kernel: hdc: DMA interrupt recovery

Jun 8 15:47:59 netrek kernel: Warning: /proc/ide/hd?/settings

Note that I get no such problems with my 2.4.27 kernel. And what
should I do about /proc/ide/hd?/settings?

Problem 3:
In my /var/log/syslog I see tons of messages on boot dealing with
"class_uevent" and "class_device_create_uevent" is this a problem or
not? Below I have included the logfile excerpt.

Logitech Quickcam Communicate STX:

After a recent upgrade to Debian Testing, support for this camera has been
downgraded, with the result that VLC can now only display the stream at a
much lower resolution.

Formerly the resolution was an acceptable 640x480, now it is only 320x240.

Suspecting the spca5xx driver, I downgraded it to the level in Debian
Stable, but this is evidently not the issue.

The camera ID (lsusb) is: 046d:08ad Logitech, Inc.

Does anybody have an Idea how to get back the lost resolution?
Is this a Debian issue or upstream?

Thanks

Hi,
I've had this problem with my computer across a couple of networks

At this point I can connect to the internet and surf, etc fine. The
problem is that other computers on the network cannot see me (mostly
windows machines using Windows Networking).

When I do an ifconfig it turns out that despite the above, the listed
"inet adr" is always the same one as the broadband router and not the
same one i was assigned.

If I then do a:
ifdown wlan0
ifup wlan0

exactly the same network address gets assigned to me but this time, it
turns up correctly in my ifconfig and other computers in my network
can see me.

How can this be?

thanks for any help, am quite puzzled.

Have you tried grepping the /etc/exim dir's for "google".
The easiest way to setup exim in debian is to "run dpkg-reconfigure
exim4-config" and select the right option for you.

Normally you find this part in /etc/mysql/my.cnf:

# Instead of skip-networking the default is now to listen only on
# localhost which is more compatible and is not less secure.
bind-address = 127.0.0.1

This causes mysql to only listen on localhost. If you comment it
out and restart it will listen on all interfaces.

exim4 config (?)

2007-06-10 Thread William Pursell

I'm not sure if the following problem is an exim4 configuration
issue, and I'm hoping for some pointers on where to look.

I normally use icedove and pop my mail from gmail, and things
work fine. When I tried to send mail using:

$ mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] < file

The mail was returned to me with:
SMTP error from remote mail server after MAIL FROM:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
SIZE=2522:

host gmail-smtp.l.google.com [64.233.183.109]:
530 5.5.1 Authentication Required d23sm9741312nfh

I was a bit surprised that mailx was trying to contact google,
so I looked through /etc/exim4 and didn't find any references
at all to google. I then added my gmail account to
/etc/exim4/email-addresses and sent an email
using mailx to my google account. After about 12 hours,
that mail has disappeared. (ie, I haven't gotten a Mail delivery
failure, and I haven't received the email.)

What am I missing? Bottom line: I want
the ability to send email by redirecting a file into
/usr/bin/mail. The easiest solution that allows me
to do that is welcome.

Why do you have sshd binding to several ports?

Suppose attacker's IP address is 1.2.3.4. Then "host 1.2.3.4" and
"whois 1.2.3.4" will give you some information.

Unless the neighbor kid is really stupid, the attacker is probably
operating from a foreign country via a chain of several hacked PCs.
You will most likely never know who it is. The attacker is probably
simultaneously attacking thousands of systems.

If the attacker addesss is 10.0.2.15 then it is either an attacker on your
LAN or it is an attacker receiving assistance (SNAT) from your firewall.

If the attacked address is 10.0.2.15 then SSH is probably being port-
-forwarded (DNAT) by your firewall.

In /etc/ssh/sshd_config you can cause ssh to bind only to 127.0.0.1, and/or
enable many other kinds of protection. RTF "man 5 sshd_config" for details.

This means that if you install a package with rpm, and later a .deb

the rpm's files with the deb's files, but neither rpm nor dpkg will know
this happened. The effects of this can be pretty dire; using alien
avoids them.

Thank you for explaining. I wasn't actually planning on using .rpm
directly on Debian. Instead, I converted OOo 2.2.0 from .rpm to .deb
using Alien. But then I got warned that even this could harm my system
in unexpected ways and I better use backports (I'm running Etch). So
I removed the .rpm stuff and installed the OOo 2.2.0 backport. It's
running fine now.

Well, usually you bind to 0.0.0.0 meaning all interfaces or specific
one (i.e. 192.168.0.5). 127.0.0.1 is on loopback interface, so you are
able to access it only from localhost.

SSH is not exposed from local to internet!
It is to a "VMZ" which is a virtual machine that may have been running at the
time. But who is this IP (virtual machines are like 10.0.2.15 or such) ??

if SSH is blocked at your firewall, then the traffic is coming from either:
a. your firewall (e.g., if there's a port opened to the outside world)
b. somewhere on your internal network
c. a process on your own machine

and, to add to this, addresses in the range 10.0.0.0-255 are reserved
for use on internal networks

so... this would seem to be more likely a virus scanning its
environment, or some kind of legitimate internal port scannner being
used for network management purposes

a few things you might try:

dig -x 10.0.2.15
(same as dig 15.2.0.10.in-addr.arpa)
will give you a reverse lookup on the address, if one is registered -
but... it's unlikely a reverse pointer will be registered

traceroute to the address - it might show you something useful

netstat - will show you what connections are open on your machine, and
give you some idea of what programs are behind them - might show you if
a program on your machine has bound that address (if have a small
network, you could run netstat on each machine) - read the man page and
play with the different options

If there is no other way or if you mean in the normal way then the

When I run 'rm -i' it prompts before each removal. *That's* what

Those are packages which you have built yourself (local) or which are
no longer in the repositories listed in /etc/apt/sources.list, or which
are in a repository which you have removed from that list (obsolete in
both cases).

Only by restoring the lines which you removed

What are the packages? Do you still need them? Are any of them listed

udev rule writing help needed

2007-06-10 Thread Don Hayward

I have a new Seagate FreeAgent usb hard drive. After install, it
spins down and when one tries to write to it, it gets marked read only.
This can be prevented by running the following command line:

echo 1 > /sys/class/scsi_disk/14\:0\:0\:0/allow_restart

where this bit^^^
varies with each connection.

I'd like to get udev to set this for me, so I tried the following rule:

SYSFS{model}=="FreeAgentDesktop",RUN+="/bin/echo 1 >
/sys/class/scsi_disk/%k/allow_restart"

It doesn't work. Allow_restart is always 0 after a connection.

I've also tried:
SYSFS{model}=="FreeAgentDesktop",RUN+="/bin/echo 1 >
/sys/class/scsi_disk/%b/allow_restart"
SYSFS{model}=="FreeAgentDesktop",RUN+="/bin/echo 1 >
'/sys/class/scsi_disk/%k/allow_restart'"
SYSFS{model}=="FreeAgentDesktop",RUN+="/bin/echo 1 >
'/sys/class/scsi_disk/%b/allow_restart'"

because I'm confused about 1) which string substitution holds the
identifier I need, and 2) the need for quoting or escaping the ':' in
the line.

udevtest shows this:
parse_file: reading '/etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules' as rules file
and this
main: run: 'socket:/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event'
so my rule seems to be picked up.

udevinfo -a -p /sys/block/sdd

I don't know. I always use aptitude interactively so I can see exactly
what it wants to do and why.

Without further info, I would guess that your new python depends on a
newer libc which then breaks your version of gcc; I would guess shifting
dependencies.

Aptitude was designed to handle dependencies in a richer, more nuanced,
way but lets not start the apt-get/aptitude argument. Suffice it to
refer to the Etch release notes that say that aptitude is now the
preferred way to handle packages.

I've only used memory sticks which don't give an indication that the
power is still on. Since USB is designed for hotplugging, I don't see
why having the power to the port on is a bad thing. On my box, the
power is on to the USB ports even if the computer is on; great for
charging things.

As long as the filesystem is unmounted there should be no problem.

Thanks, that did the trick. Not sure why I never had to do this
before... it is possible that I used to compile the necessary drivers
into the kernel. This was a first run to see if the kernel would
compile with the patches and therefore I did not really do any kernel

dig

To look at, for example, 68.99.123.13 do this:
  $ dig 13.123.99.68.in-addr.arpa

Note how I reversed the numbers and appended ".in-addr.arpa".

Yeah, work like that at least in my experiencie, I guess that in the end
this could be directly caused by the way of the OS (or the layer) treat

With bash and the "up arrow", it doesn't seem to me that this would
take a lot of time.

Also, the jpegs do not have an exiv2 header in them
(at least not that I know of; scanned from negatives), but I would
suppose it is easy to add an empty header via a shell script.

:)

Remember, even though Linux has GUI, most "Unix people" don't
reflexively go for the GUI solution.

(Then, after doing that to all the files, I would use exiv2 to rename
them based upon the timestamp. But that's just me.)

I don't know is MS Windows "resets" the file order when you log off or
change directories thus forcing you not to be able to do anything else
in Explorer until you complete that task, but the method I propose
definitely does not force you to keep that window open the whole time.

Well, how I get around this problem is to distribute the images in a
number of folders (around 20 in my case) based on the time-line (or
event) once. This is done by drag and drop using the thumbnail view.

Clever.

If it helps, Nautilus has a thumbnail viewer. (As does, presumably,
Konq.)

gqview is also *perfect* for such a task.

That way I just have to sort contents of one folder at a time (involving
around 20~60 or so images). This makes the problem much more tractable
in Windows.

It seems to me that this is a messy problem no matter which OS you use.

Within that one folder, I drag and drop the images into
their proper order and then rename them (they get renamed in the order I
had placed them) so that they have a name something like event_.jpeg
where is a sequence starting from 0001.

Once you get them renamed to event_hhmmss.jpeg, a script can rename
them to event_.jpeg, if you want.

SSH is not exposed from local to internet!
It is to a "VMZ" which is a virtual machine that may have been running at the

I am wondering for many years now when whitespace handling will be managed
automatically, natively, just out of the box.
Do i understand it right now, and it's still just not implemented ?

I'm talking about this: chown -R me:you /deepfolder

That's a shame. 8-) I would have had a hint for you otherwise...

I must somehow have messed up my partitiontable when i put Debian on my Laptop.
Now every time i let grub handle a new kernel it "rearranges" my partitions

boot-options.
This _could_ have happened to you, too. But not if you're booting all your

There are all kinds of suicidal things the root user can do. Don't

You are sober
You are not fatigued
You are not distracted
You know exactly what you want to do and why
You are competent to do this

You cannot do this without becomming root.

Other suicidal actions include:

/bin/rm -Rf /

and others.

You can't expect a system written by hackers to have in place for every

Using mc is dead simple. On one panel, cd to the target directory; if
it doesn't exist, cd to the parent, hit F7 and enter the name, then cd.
You can also use lynx-like directories. To open up the .rpm, just move
the cursor to it and hit enter; it then appears to be its own
filesystem. Find the directory you want and hit F5 to copy it over.

Wow, you need a whole partition for /opt! What all packages have you
needed for which there isn't a deb?

anything obvious to select this behaviour, and under advanced
configuration/browsers section, references are to Netscape (?). I am sure
that it is something quite straight forward, but I just haven't come across
it yet.

Any pointers, please?

See Arthur Marsh's recent message:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2007/06/msg00810.html

Thanks. I fiddled with that for a while, without any luck, so tried this
instead:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure icedove

Which brings up the ncurses screen. I then selected Gnome to handle the
preference and that now works just fine.

Thanks for the input folks

Hi, you missed the "--initrd" option. That way the package will make the
initrd when installed and the kernel will use it at boot time.

boot problem with custom kernel

2007-06-10 Thread Robert D. Crawford
I am running sid on a thinkpad t40. I've been using the powertop
utility to check on power consumption and needed to install a custom
kernel with a few patches. Here is the process I went through:

1. d/l the sources for 2.6.22-rc1 from kernel.org

2. d/l the patches from the powertop site, making sure that I fetched
the patch for the correct kernel.

3. mv the sources and patches to the /usr/src directory

4. tar xjvf linux-2.6.22-rc1.tar.bz2

5. ln -s linux-2.6.22-rc1 linux

6. cd linux

7. patch -p1 < ../kernel-2.6.22-rc1.patch

8. patch -p1 < ../hpet_patches_45.patch

9. cp /boot/config-2.6.21-1-686 .config

10. make oldconfig

11. make-kpkg clean

12. make-kpkg --append-to-version=.powertop kernel_image

13. dpkg -i
.../linux-image-2.6.22-rc1.powertop_2.6.22-rc1.powertop-10.00.Custom_i386.deb

by the way, I am not sure why this filename is so long. They did not
used to be this long, but it has been a while since I have built a
custom kernel.

14. cd /boot ; depmod -v 2.6.22-rc1.powertop

15. mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd-img-2.6.22-rc1.powertop
2.6.22-rc1.powertop

16. update-grub

17. reboot

At this point, I get

kernel panic - not syncing: vfs

and something about not being able to mount the root device. I cannot
remember the whole message and cannot find something to write with that
will write large enough I can read it (I am legally blind). If I need
to post the whole error I can find someone that can help me to copy it
down.

Is there something I have missed here? I have built both with and
without the patches from powertop and get the same error.

Thanks for your help,
rdc

Bear in mind that by default, Debian's mysql server packages only
listen on localhost so are not available across the network until
you change that.

Once you have changed it and have added a user with privileges to
connect from your workstation(s), you probably want to test that
access from the workstation with the mysql client:

$ mysql -h your.mysql.server.host -u username -p databasename

Until this part works, you haven't got it set up correctly.

Cheers,
Andy

Thanks Andy,

I thought I read somewhere that tcp/ip was set on by default. I will
have to configure it to turn it on then. Is this just a configuration

I'm using WEP and entering the passphrase as hex in network-manager-kde. If I

And everything is ok. The interface as such works, but I'm having trouble

askes for the passpharse instead; or

2) by having eth1 start from auto eth1 in /etc/network/interfaces which fails

Thanks for any suggestions. I need to be able to have this box come up and
attach to the network over eth1 without any intervention.

Mutt is a command line Mail User Agent (MUA) and it uses vim, an
expandad vi, to write/reply to mail. IMHO these are 2 of the most
useful apps.

Try "aptitude show mutt" | "apt-cache show mutt" & "aptitude|apt-cache
show vi".

IIRC the netinstall uses the nano editor because of its small size.

If a device shows up then the driver is loaded. Then you have to configure

Once you have the above interfaces file done then to connect to your

then
$ ifup (interface name from iwconfig)

I did not install any flux patches. Note I am running lenny/Testing not
etch/stable.

I'll leave it there until we know if the wrappers got the drivers installed
correctly.

I'll mention some other stuff for you to ponder.

There, usually, is no need to reboot the system. When working on
networking you can restart networking, after making changes to the
interfaces file by doing as root /etc/init.d/networking restart.

$ ifconfig (show what interfaces are up)

The dhcp, in the interfaces file, is the command to get access to your
AP. I have to assume that the netinstall includes the dhcp client.

The stacktrace mentions a PHP error. I would try and track that one
down first. Additionally, you might find better help on the debian-isp
list. At least, I think you are more likely to find someone actually
running tutos2 on that list.

Re: cryptsetup: Source device /dev/sda7 not found

2007-06-10 Thread Valentin
Now I tried putting the references to disks in the crypttab by
using /dev/disk/by-uuid/* instead of /dev/sda and did update-initramfs
-k -u, but it still can't find the device. What am I doing
wrong?
