I think this Acer uses the same Atheron wireless chipset as my Samsung
NC10. By using the 2.6.29 kernel from sid, this chipset is natively
supported and should "just work" without any fiddling.

can not start apache in lenny

2009-05-01 Thread Vazrik Israelian
I recently upgraded to lenny (stable), and I can not get apache to start. It
fails at boot time, and when starting it manually, it fails the same way:

#/etc/init.d/apache2 start

Starting web server: apache2apache2: ../sysdeps/posix/getaddrinfo.c:1463:

/usr/sbin/apache2ctl: line 83: 4369 Aborted $HTTPD
${APACHE_ARGUMENTS} -k $ARGV
 failed!

I have been at this for a while. All my searches, and readings did not result
to any solution.

# deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ stable main non-free contrib

Any help is appreciated.

2.6.18 Modular Kernel has No Sound.

2009-05-01 Thread Martin McCormick
I have an etch system that has been running a 2.6.5
kernel and it is time to upgrade it to something more modern.
The 2.6.5 kernel worked well but our organization is using VPN
so I need to update things so that vpnc will work.

After a coworker convinced me to try a modular kernel
instead of building another one, I downloaded
what appears to be the newest kernel from debian.org:

#aptitude install linux-image-2.6-686

This got a 2.6.18 modular kernel so I tried it. It
appears to work fine except for sound. My old kernel works
beautifully with alsa. The new kernel actually found the sound
card but then begin complaining that the sound device was busy
during the boot process. Game over for sound.

Everything else appears fine.

Is there any way to guide this process a bit to make the
sound work again?

I now know the recommended way to build a custom kernel
so I could fall back to doing that again, but surely there is a
way to get the CS4236 sound chips matched up with the right
module.

Fortunately, grub still points to the old kernel by
default for now so, for the time being, I am back to the 2.6.5
kernel and sound pouring out of the speakers.:-)

Chris,

"If by that you're referring to a UNIX/Linux system, ..."

Any system providing a command line is sufficient.
It could be a DEC VT100 or an Atari or a Mac Plus.
Cut & paste saves typing and that is enough for most
purposes.

"I would recommend that you use /usr/lib/sendmail as
the executable target as it's always there regardless
of the actual MTA."

OK. If, five years hence, sendmail moves to /usr/share/
my template will still fail. But then I should remember
to check the path.

I've the older model with the 8GB SSD and to be honest the SSD sucks.
It's awful slow. I'd prefer the HDD version if possible.

- wifi works with the non-free madwifi driver.

- Everything else works out of the box except for the cardreaders. I didn't
bother with it but I remember some kernel oopses when I had a XD card in the
left reader and tried to boot.

- It's a bit more complex to get the wifi to support the european channels 12+
but works after some fiddling and searching.

Currently you have to build them yourself or use the emacs-snapshot-nox

On most systems, probably not. Feel free to open a wishlist bug that

My gut reaction is "no," but I do not claim to have data to back that

to a loaded module versus a built-in module, then you could arguably get
some minimal throughput gain over a long time period given the situation
you're describing.

For actual data, you might try asking on the mailing list for the Debian

Since you're admittedly using "older" systems anyway, we're talking
about (at the very most) losing a tiny percentage of efficiency on
machines that weren't going to be the major contributors of throughput
in the first place. I'm thinking I would be a Bad and Evil person if I
encouraged you to custom compile your own kernels for _only_ the purpose
you are describing. (If there were some educational goal on your own
part that you were pursuing, it would start to make more sense, IMHO.)

You do if the order the alternatives are listed has changed and it confuses
the dependency resolver when you are installing. Ideally, this would be so
scriptable as to be non-interactive -- which is why I included instructions
for saving/restoring debconf data as well. You won't have debconf data for
the alternative you didn't have installed, so you will have to configure it
when you already have a working configuration for something else.

Even if you think you do care, you probably do. Either that, or you have a
different goal.

That's a uuencoded attachment. Uuencode is an older method of handling
attachments, more common in newsgroups rather than mailing lists. MIME
attachments are the standard, and most common attachment method in use today.
Even newsgroups are mostly MIME now.

uuencode and uudecode from the sharutils package can be used to create and
read uuencoded attachments.

Interesting, I would have thought the difference would have been a little more
noticeable. I may have to reconsider.

A very good point but one I have considered. The systems I have in mind are
some that I don't use for anything but grid computing. I run Bionc on projects
at the World Community Grid, these systems will just run 24/7 until they break
and I will then throw them in the trash. They are older systems not worth my
time to fix so your point above although valid in most cases doesn't apply to
my very particular goal. None of my daily use systems would be running a
custom kernel.

I understand there is a time investment and learning curve to consider. But
if I can get a little extra processor and ram use from a leaner kernel, this
is something I may do many more times in the future so it would be worth that
investment. But not if the increase in computing power has to be measured in
milliseconds per day!

So on a dedicated system that is used for nothing but running a processor
intensive application 24/7, do you think there would be any real increase in
performance from a custom kernel?

Because we are talking about restoring the saved state, and which package
satisfies an "virtual | package-i-don't-like | package-i-like"
Depend/Recommend does matter, even if that package is marked automatically
installed.

It is possible that some of the packages you capture with the dpkg --get-
selections end up not being installed at all if the Depends/Recommends change
because package versions have moved forward between your save and your
restore. However, having them in the "install" and "automatically installed"
state gives hints to the dependency resolver about which package(s) you want
to satisfy dependencies.

Check to see if you have a sound server installed (esd, arts, PA).
They can get in the way (although I happen to like PA). Check your
sound modules with lsmod. Check that you don't also have a sound
chip on your motherboard.

Re: Postfix Transport Maps and MXs Ignored After Upgrade to Lenny

2009-05-01 Thread Eric Cunningham
I think I've found a/the fix for re-enabling the original behavior of my
transport maps and MX relaying. I added .$mydomain to mydestination in
main.cf. This is in addition to $mydomain which was already in
mydestination.

$mydomain vs. .$mydomain is subtle but apparently important.

Eric Cunningham wrote:
I just upgraded from etch to lenny and my previously working postfix
transport map seems to now be ignored under postfix 2.5.5-1.1. Messages
that used to be relayed successfully are now rejected with "Relay access

this server running lenny postfix 2.5.5-1.1 are also rejected with
"Relay access denied."

I've found a workaround in listing the subdomains in
/etc/postfix/transport and MX'd machines as relay_domains in
/etc/postfix/main.cf, but this seems redundant.

Have there been any similar reports of this behavior? Any thoughts on
how to address this issue? If anyone is able to look into this, I'd be
happy to send along any needed details & info.

Good points. I like nitpicking ;-)

As an aside, I use static IPs on everything here with no wireless and
all manually configured as per my example.

The only exception to this is a recently acquired laptop with which I
wanted to use both wireless and DHCP and be able to control it all from
a GUI interface; something I have not done before. I tried and failed
with the kde front-end to network manager and in the end purged all
traces of them and installing wicd ("aptitude show wicd" describes it
well). It is really excellent and just works, seamlessly restoring
networking after suspending and so on and allowing easy switching from
wired to wireless and so on.

My reply was to Alex Samad, to point out that the 173xx driver has been
updated (in unstable) to support 2.6.29 kernels.

sound stuck in loop/reverberation

2009-05-01 Thread Ross Boylan
My sound often gets stuck and just repeats the same short sound over and
over again, like a reverberation or an echo. The volume goes up and
down cyclically--in fact it may be playing a single tone.

This sometimes happens after a period in which the sound works OK, or a
period in which there is no sound at all.

I've run into this most recently while trying to watch a show at
hulu.com (thought the day before things worked OK). I've run into it at
other sites.

Can anyone suggest how to diagnose or fix the problem?

I have stuff from Marillat's AV repository installed, and used
iceweasel. The system is Lenny, with Intel HDA ICH7 onboard. The logs
and .xsession-errors don't seem to have anything. The alsa site
suggested HDA Analyzer
(http://git.alsa-project.org/?p=alsa.git;a=blob_plain;f=hda-analyzer/run.py;hb=HEAD)
but it says (run as root)

No HDA codecs were found or insufficient priviledges for
/dev/snd/controlC* and /dev/snd/hwdepC*D* device files.

You may also check, if you compiled HDA driver with HWDEP
interface as well or close all application using HWDEP.

I have the controlC* files but no hwdepC*D*; maybe the driver isn't
compiled with HWDEP on Debian?

I have a lot of plugins; I wonder if they are interefering with each
other (list at bottom--is there any easy way to capture this info?).
hulu appears to use Flash 9, judging by http://www.hulu.com/about. My
flashplayer 10 (not 9) plugin (libflashplayer.so) is from
flashplayer-mozilla 1:10.0.22.87-0.1
in Marillat's repository.

be older systems that will never be upgraded or need new hardware so the

used ext3 on the drives and they don't need to access anything else and will
remove all support for ext2, ext4, NTFS and everything else. I intend to
compile everything into the kernel without using modules. It's my
understanding from what I have read that this will result in a leaner and some
what faster kernel for that system. Is that a reasonable assumption and
approach?

What is "reasonable" is a matter of opinion. Even though I carried out
the massive research project you are describing above, and determined
the exact set of configuration options needed to compile a custom kernel
which exactly fits my hardware (and _only_ my hardware), I would not
recommend anyone else to do so unless they had some specific need or
purpose. My purpose has been to learn how Debian works "under the
hood," with the intent of being able to contribute useful work later --
in the form of fixing bugs, writing and packaging my own software, and
(possibly) becoming a Debian developer.

Leaner? My own experience is that my kernel binaries are _larger_ than
a Debian kitchen-sink kernel, while the disk space taken up for the
initial ramdisk (initrd) and loadable modules in /lib/modules goes away
almost entirely:

# ls -lA /boot | cut -f5- -d' '
[...]
7653318 2009-04-20 07:43 initrd.img-2.6.28-1-amd64
[...]
2041664 2009-02-18 13:02 vmlinuz-2.6.28-1-amd64
2921024 2009-03-21 12:57 vmlinuz-2.6.28-2s13145.090321.desktop.uvesafb

# du -s -b /lib/modules/*
210911107 /lib/modules/2.6.28-1-amd64
15089013/lib/modules/2.6.28-2s13145.090321.desktop.uvesafb

The 15 MB of modules in my current custom kernel's /lib/modules path are
mostly unnecessary, and could easily be reduced below 2 MB (maybe even

1 MB).

Faster? I promise that you would not notice the speedup. Conceivably
your kernel will boot slightly faster without having to carry out the
hardware detection for the 99% of modules that have no relevance for
your particular system, but you would have great difficulty measuring
the alleged time savings accurately. (There are great opportunities for
decreasing the time needed to boot a Debian system, but these have to do
with customizing the initialization scripts, not with replacing the
kitchen-sink kernel with a custom kernel.)

As far as being in a hurry to leave out unnecessary things like ext2,
ext4, and NTFS... I would ask you to reconsider. What happens if you
meet other Linux users in your area, and they want to give you some
files off of their USB flash drive formatted in ext2 or ext4? Or what
happens if some Windows user you meet has some files on their external
hard drive... formatted in NTFS? Now your really great idea about
compiling your own kernel is really going to make you look smart to
those folks, right? Your choices at that point will be to recompile
your custom kernel, or boot to a Debian kitchen-sink kernel. (Which
just raises the question of why you weren't using the Debian kernel in
the first place.)

I'm not trying to discourage you from building your own kernel. I'm
trying to offer information that I think you should consider, and I'm
offering the advice that you shouldn't bother building your own kernel
unless you have some really good reason. (Really good reasons might
include a burning desire to simply know how, or to be able to say you
did it, but if one of those is you only reason then I think you will
regret it by about halfway through the process.)

The Debian kernel team works really hard to make sure that the kernels
work, and they do a good job. In the end, I was able to customize my
kernel configuration to the point that I can compile a kernel in about
6 minutes on my desktop machine... which is (at least) 6 minutes longer
than it would take me to install a Debian kernel. ;) If I hadn't had
problems with ALSA support with this machine when I first put it
together, I probably would not have bothered to learn to compile my own
kernels. The amount of time in invested in learning how to do it now
causes me to want to keep doing it, so I don't have the feeling that I
wasted those dozens of hours -- and so I am condemned to the punishment
of Sisyphus.

The whole subject of initrds scripts is something I will need to study up on.
But are you saying that if I don't use modules that I don't need to worry
about needing these scripts?

When you boot a kernel, then any feature required by your system to be
able to boot will have to be available before your hard disks are
mounted. There are two ways to accomplish this:

1. Build the features directly into the kernel binary, instead of
building th

As others have commented Paul, there's not a lot here to go on. Your
setup which didn't work is all commented out and the rest is just blank.

What I would expect to see is something a bit like this:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.10.103
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.10.1
network 192.168.10.0
broadcast 192.168.10.255

(assuming you have a router of that IP address of course).

If you *do* have network-manager installed then this could be the cause
of many of your woes.

I am currently using the 180.44 driver, and even tried nvidia's current
180.51. These drivers show similar problems. Yet, I did succeed in using
beamers with my laptop in the past. Actually, one of those which worked
stopped working.
I also tried the 173.x series drivers, to no avail.

This doesn't tell us anything that we could use to troubleshoot. Do you

If you would detail the errors, it might be easier to make a

You appear to be trying to use a device that's already part of a RAID
array to create a RAID array. You can't do that.

Take a look at output of /proc/mdstat to see what your system thinks
are RAID devices.

You can use
* scribus
* inkscape
* glabels
* openoffice.impress

for greeting card creation
All of the above mentioned packages are available in Debian/Ubuntu repos.

Following 2 tutorials might help you to use openoffice.impress

http://showmedo.com/videotutorials/video?name=153&fromSeriesID=153
http://showmedo.com/videotutorials/video?name=1530010&fromSeriesID=153

You might also find following link useful for printing purpose
http://www.bolis.com/amillar/linux/printing-greeting-cards-linux

Also check this for Scribus
http://www.tuxmagazine.com/node/135

Alternatively you can install "Wine". Wine lets you install Windows
programs on GNU/Linux systems.
So, try installing American Greetings Create-A-Card using Wine.

Please take into consideration that, I have not used any of the above
softwares but Wine. Those are the google results.
Hope that helps.

I think you hit "Reply" button instead of "Reply All", so you sent me
a private mail rather than replying to the list.
Please do take care next time when replying. :)

To redo my network config, just eth0, what is the best way to do it. I tried
dpkg-reconfigure ifupdown, but that didn't change the interfaces file.
this is what I had that didn't work:

I believe this is a known bug:

I'm waiting for this bug to be closed, and the next release of

Unlikely. In the past I have switched between fglrx, radeon and vesa
quite some times if one or the other did have some issue. And switching
to another one always worked without having to change more than the
driver line in the xorg.conf file.

It looks like the new Xorg has some very fundamental change which I am
not aware of.

So, if anybody has any comments wrt. to the configuration and log files
I presented in my initial posting, I'm very grateful for hearing them.

As far as I remember, /etc/Muttrc has always had the lines

# Exim does not remove Bcc headers
unset write_bcc

by default, which seems to suggest that mutt solves the problem rather
than being one of the causes.

Yep, it's not named on the page, which I guess is a mistake, but you
will be redirected on the "legacy" page if you try to select a driver

But nevertheless, even if my X1400 was legacy and not supported in

Please explain what you are trying to achieve. Do you want to run the
daemon as a user or just send some mail?

I'm curious, why not replace these two with

aptitude -F '%p' search '~i!~M' > packagesNG_not_autoinstalled

Auto-installed packages are really not important (at least for me) and
they might change from one version to the other of some package. Let
apt/aptitude figure out what additional packages need to be installed,
that's what they were created for.
