Problem solved. It turned out that the culprit was Stani's Python Editor
(the spe package). I removed the package and it took the other two culprits,
kiki and wxGlade with it. Then everything unjammed and all my python
packages configured properly and all is well. I can't even remember why I
wanted SPE. I don't recall every having used it.

I use only exim4 without content checking, and the mail client. I get
typically 2000-5000 attempted SMTP connections a day (of which about 100
are genuine, mostly mailing lists), and an average of about a dozen
spams a week make it into the inbox. Icedove spots at least 80% of those.

Reverse DNS lookup is the best single measure, enabled by default in
Debian. I also look for a matching PTR-A record pair, refuse a (by now)
quite large collection of CIDR blocks and do some tests on PTR and HELO
strings. I refuse about fifteen countries, a couple of large national
ISPs by name (they have many CIDR blocks) and try to spot dynamic
PTR/HELO strings by digit pattern. I also block a large fraction of
APNIC at the firewall, but unfortunately it is continuously acquiring
many small CIDR blocks from other regions' former allocations.

Spam that does make it into the inbox is saved up, and I spend about a
minute a day looking up their CIDR blocks and adding them to my list.
Unfortunately, that's not easy to automate due to the wide variation in
material returned by whois.

overhead projector unclear under lenny

2009-09-24 Thread John O Laoi
Hello,
I moved my laptop to lenny last May. Before that, it had been using etch.
It is a DELL Precision M65. It has a 15.4" WUXGA (1920 x 1200) LCD Screen.

On moving, I noticed that it had very few screen resolutions,
so I editedxorg.conf to add a few.
Everything worked fine, until I connected an overhead projector
yesterday, for the first time under lenny.
The picture produced by the overhead is very unclear.

With WINDOWS on the same laptop, the picture on the overhead projector is clear.
The picture used to be clear under etch.
I tried another overhead projector, and saw the same unclear picture.

I have tried reducing the resolution on the Display, and it has not helped.

Secondly, how to disable the secure apt if the problem is there.

where would i configure an external HD to be automounted?

2009-09-24 Thread Robert P. J. Day

more specifically, on an old lenny system, when an external maxtor
(1-touch) HD was plugged in via USB, it was *apparently* mounted
automatically under /mnt/maxtor, for the purposes of backups later in
the evening.

i have a full backup of /etc from that old system, and i'm trying to
figure out where that would have been configured so i can add it to
the new system. i've checked things related to autofs but i don't see
it. hint? i'm sure it's obvious, i just haven't found it yet.

and to preempt the obvious question, "lsusb" does show that the hard
drive is connected. it's just the automount/autofs i need to
activate so that it's mounted when it's plugged in.

rday

p.s. i'm *assuming* that some sort of auto-mounting was happening
there, since there's nothing in the backup script that involves a
manual mount of that drive.

You might like to look into configuring yourself a modeline to tell
the xserver what the hardware is capable of if it's not automatically

hmm ... that didn't solve it and, in the process of debugging, i
ran across something *very* unfamiliar but apparently easily fixable.

to get the maxtor USB HD to automount when plugged in, i copied over
the old autofs-related config files so that the system now has:

  /etc/auto.master:

/var/autofs/misc/etc/auto.misc --timeout=5
/var/autofs/net /etc/auto.net
/mnt/etc/auto.usb --timeout=2

  /etc/auto.usb:

usbdrive-fstype=ext3,rw,sync :/dev/sdb1
usbdrive2 -fstype=ext3,rw,sync :/dev/sdc1

looks good so far? and i can verify with "fdisk" that the drive
appears as /dev/sdc, with a single linux partition of /dev/sdc1. i
verified that i can manually mount that partition at an arbitrary
directory i created under /tmp. and after i restarted autofs, i get:

=

# /etc/init.d/autofs status
Configured Mount Points:

/usr/sbin/automount --timeout=5 /var/autofs/misc file /etc/auto.misc
/usr/sbin/automount --timeout=300 /var/autofs/net program
/etc/auto.net
/usr/sbin/automount --timeout=2 /mnt file /etc/auto.usb

Active Mount Points:

/usr/sbin/automount --pid-file=/var/run/autofs/_var_autofs_misc.pid
--timeout=5 /var/autofs/misc file /etc/auto.misc
/usr/sbin/automount --pid-file=/var/run/autofs/_var_autofs_net.pid
--timeout=300 /var/autofs/net program /etc/auto.net
/usr/sbin/automount --pid-file=/var/run/autofs/_mnt.pid --timeout=2
/mnt file /etc/auto.usb

=

would that normally be sufficient? have i forgotten anything?
because i had someone unplug the drive, then plug it back in again and
... nothing. so i tried to *manually* mount the drive under /mnt, but
i was unable to manually create a directory mount point under /mnt.

# mkdir /mnt/rday
mkdir: cannot create directory `/mnt/rday': No such file or directory
#

huh? then i looked more closely:

# ls -ld /mnt
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2009-09-24 09:04 /mnt
#

a directory size of zero? does that mean that there is no "real"
/mnt directory (similar to /proc and /sys)? i'm confused since i'm
used to /mnt being a real but empty directory. and i'm confused as to
why the drive isn't being mounted at plug-in time.

have i missed something? all of the above looks reasonable. to
what log file would autofs diagnostics go? i can't find any error
msgs.

  this looked so straightforward.

Out of the ~180 'DATA' commands I received yesterday, 83 resulted in an SMTP-
time rejection, 8 were forwarded to SpamCop. My site-wide settings are quite
conservative.

Of the ones that resulted in an SMTP-time rejection, most were from a mail
server that has poor SPAM-scanning, but that shouldn't be rejected at the
firewall.

Since IP != identity, I'm not willing to block any ip address or range unless
I have a mechanism for automatically expiring those blocks. However,
spamassassin accesses some half-dozen free-to-use DNSBLs that serve the same
purpose.

It should be pretty easy. I have a USB drive that mounts automatically
(sometimes even when I don't want it to).

1. Create a directory for your drive to mount to. In this case, it
looks like you want:

mkdir /mnt/rday

The mount point has to exist before you can mount to it.

2. Create an entry in /etc/fstab like this:

/dev/sdc1 /mnt/rday ext3 user,auto,rw,exec,suid,dev 0 0

You can twiddle the options as you need, but this should get you going.

no, i don't think i should need to do that. the *old* system
didn't have an entry in /etc fstab for this. what i'm puzzled by is
that, if the automounter isn't running, there's *no* /mnt directory on
this system. i always thought that /mnt should exist as a normal (but
empty) directory. i'm *guessing* that what i need to do is stop the
automounter, then "mkdir /mnt", then restart the automounter. i get
the impression that, for the above to work, /mnt must already exist,
and the automounter will be responsible for creating the appropriate
subdirectory mount points.

does that sound reasonable? because, as it stands, the automounting
just isn't working. is anyone else out there using autofs like this?
does the top-level mount directory already exist for you?

rday

p.s. i'm sure i can simplify this with udev, but i'm trying to simply
reproduce what was on the old system for now.

If you really hate MTA being resident, run queue comman like "exim -q"
from command line, cron or some hook script so it does not interfair
with your activity. Simplest thing to do is run queue from command line
when you exit MUA. Install postfix or exim as nondaemon.

Program size (resident memory) is your issue. Just run "ps" or "top"
and see what "RES" say on your system. mailer is baby in size compaired
to any X apps.

I remember we had automounter damon in old days. We have udev hook

You mean "on an old lenny system"? it is new enough. Even sarge is new
enough for udev.

i know udev is a better solution *today*, but i'm trying to strictly
reproduce what the old system was using, and it wasn't mounting that
HD via udev, it was doing it via autofs. so the question remains --
does it make sense to not have a real /mnt directory? i have no idea
where it went, but i'm quite sure a normal debian install would create
one, no?

autofs might be useful for you. The way it works is, you plug in the
disk, and access the mount point. When you try to access the mount
point, it checks for the disk and mounts it. Also, after a time you
specify (say one minute, for example), for which the disk is not
accessed, it is automatically unmounted. So, you can safely plug it
out.

There are too many tutorials and documents to mention, so just
search, and you'll find plenty of direcitons.

HTH.

ah, thanks for reminding me how autofs works -- it's not the
plugging in, it's the *attempt* to access contents under that mount
point that automounts it. i'm embarrassed to have forgotten that.

so i tried to list the contents under the appropriate mount point
and, sure enough, there was a pause and the contents appeared.
mystery solved. i was clearly thinking of udev and was thinking that
the mounting would take place when the drive was plugged in, and i
kept checking the output of the "mount" command before i'd even tried
to access anything under the mount point.

my fault. just being dense today.

Yes, and so the lack of avisynth.dll is not a problem here. It's just

another to decode the data it gets - but this data is a Web page, not a
video stream, so it fails.

The error message means that MPlayer failed to try avisynth.dll on the

The proper media file appears to be so deeply hidden away in the site
that even add-ons that usually find it, don't see it here.

If there is a way to extract the video's URL, it could possibly be played

do a Web search for such link extractor.

Yes. That is what I want to do. Where are the current modelines stored?
Somewhere in /etc I suppose, but there is a lot of stuff in /etc that
is automatically overwritten. I'd like to put my mode line in a place
that is considered authoritative by the Debian/GNU/Xwindows/Linux system.
And I'd like to use correct syntax for my modelines to that they are properly
understood by whatever is designed to read modelines.

I wouldn't mind reading some documents that explain what is going on, but
I doubt that I will remember whatever I might learn, especially if it
doesn't actually lead to my successfully configuring this monitor.

Thanks for the clue that what I need is 'a modeline'. Words matter, especially

Hi,
what driver are you using ? Free "ati/radeon" or "fglrx" proprietary driver?

If it's the free one, check that your card is supported somewhere here:
http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/ATIRadeon

and show us your /etc/X11/xorg.conf (maybe empty).

If it's the fglrx stuff, check on ati's website, your card may be
"legacy" and stuck with an older version of the driver (9.3 ?). And yet
again a matter of xorg.conf too.

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

I don't think the kernel itself has something to do with this, except
maybe with the "KMS" (kernel mode settings) of latest kernels.

Ubuntu tends to make the use of proprietary drivers "transparent" to
users, so maybe you where using "fglrx" there and not in Debian ?

Hi,

I'd use something like "gtf 1366 768 60" (for 60Hz) to get a modeline,
then put it in the "Monitor" section of xorg.conf.
Otherwise learn some "randr" magic there maybe ?

lol, I guess I should have read your post first, instead of Brent's :-)

Yes, get an NVidia card and your troubles will be over forever. I have never
once been unable to get an NVidia card working, and I've been using them with
Linux for about 8 years.

What if Kmail / Claws / Evolution decides to run its queue?

Thinking about it again: Kmail, Evolution, and such can't really tell
what's in the queue of the local sendmail. Let alone kick a message from
there.

Postfix's mailq is something any local user can use. But there's a limit
to the amount of details it can provide. I'm not sure of the mainlers
can make up a useful display of that.

Exim's queue display commands (I don't remember them) require super-user
permissions but provide slightly better control of the details and
sorting order, IIRC.

Fw: EJABBERD INTEGRADO CON LDAP

2009-09-24 Thread cosme

haciendo mal.

Uso windows server 2003 R2 y debian etch

That's fine, I guess, but personally I will never buy Nvidia until they
release open drivers and/or docs. To paraphrase RMS, "Don't buy
from Nvidia, enemy of your Freedom"

In any case, the drivers for Radeon are about as good, quality-wise,
as Nvidia drivers nowadays. Of course there can still be individual
problems with either one.

The Radeon drivers are easier to configure than the fglrx drivers,
and fglrx is only available in Ubuntu if you install restricted drivers.

Dominik, do any errors show up in /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

Re: Lightweight alternative MTA? [was: Re: Starting MTA:]

2009-09-24 Thread Mike McClain
Hi Osamu,
Thanks for the response. I really don't get it when it comes to mail.
MTA/MDA/MUA are kind of confusing, if you know where I can find a 2 page
explanation of email I'd really like to read it.
I use /usr/bin/mail, mutt, fetchmail and exim4.

The man page for /usr/bin/mail claims it's a "mail processing system".
Mutt is an MUA.
Fetchmail's man page claims, 'mail-retrieval and forwarding utility'.
Exim4's manpage claims it's an MTA, but fetchmail's manpage refers to
exim as an MDA.

How does /usr/bin/mail know to put outbound mail in /var/spool/exim4/input?
I killed the exim daemon and mail still puts mail in .../exim4/input
even though 'exim4/input' doesn't appear in any file in /etc/ or
root's environment.

No, rather fetchmail failed since there was no connection on port 25.

Would you restate this another way? I'm not understanding it.

OK, fetchmail's manpage gives examples for connecting directly to procmail
and sendmail but not exim and exim4's 30 page/60 screen manpage said nothing
about it's return value on disk full and I didn't see anything to suggest
how to take input directly from fetchmail.
Further exploration shows that sendmail is actually a link to exim so
I guess that would work but I saw in another thread that cron's messages
won't get delivered if there's no MTA deamon running. True?

OK I set QUEUERUNNER='ppp' and the mail went out but there is still
an exim deamon running, not sure how that helped.

No, I just have a script that connects if not already connected
then runs exim4 -qqff and fetchmail then shuts down the connection
if it opened it.

Thanks aagin,
Mike

I save myself a lot of pain and use the esmtp package with Mutt. It
handles sending mail to my ISP and I don't need sophisticated local
delivery so it works for me. I wandered back into Exim land earlier
this year and it wasn't pretty.
