  1. Taking note in a very simple way.

How to install Debian on a server with a LSISAS1068E controller

2009-10-26 Thread David Liontooth

Hi Allan,

Do you have the PCI ID for the controller this worked on? Did it need
megaraid_sas or mptsas?

I have what seems to be the same controller, the LSI SAS 1068E, but it
is PCI ID 1000:0059 rather than 1000:0058.

It would really be helpful to know if my device is the same as the one
you managed to get working.

Cheers,
David

The testing netinst image is needed for the NICs, and disabling

keeping the title of konsole window fixed

2009-10-26 Thread Kamaraju S Kusumanchi
Is there anyway to keep the title of the konsole window fixed?

I usually have multiple konsole terminals open. Each of them often contains
multiple tabs. I like to set the title of each konsole window manually and
do not want it to be changed dynamically. Is there any way?

I know that ctrl-alt-s can change the title of the tabs. I am looking for a
similar short cut for the whole konsole window. Possible?

Using Debian Lenny, KDE 3.5.10, Konsole 1.6.6

thanks in advance

for whatever reason after I check the box (Available to all users) it
doesn't seem to "stick".

I've re-created my keyring and made sure that the libpam files are
installed. Still the same message.

After rebooting I took a more careful look at the message:
"The application 'NetworkManager Applet' (/usr/bin/nm-applet) wants to
access the default keyring, but it is locked"

so is it actually talking about the little applet running in the
taskbar not having permission? what's the workaround for this...
other than typing the password each time.

Another option is nodm, which will automatically log in a specific user without

Awstats Cron job not executing

2009-10-26 Thread Kushal Koolwal

I am using Debian Lenny and installed awstats. Now by default the awstats
creates a the following file:

debian:~# cat /etc/cron.d/awstats
0,10,20,30,40,50 * * * * www-data [ -x /usr/lib/cgi-bin/awstats.pl -a -f
/etc/awstats/awstats.conf -a -r /var/log/apache2/access.log ] &&
/usr/lib/cgi-bin/awstats.pl -config=mydomain -update>/dev/null

The Syslog shows that the above job is being executed but my webpage stats
(http://mydomain/awstats/awstats.pl) do NOT get updated.

However if I change the awstats cron job to be executed by "root" like this:
0,10,20,30,40,50 * * * * root [ -x /usr/lib/cgi-bin/awstats.pl -a
-f /etc/awstats/awstats.conf -a -r /var/log/apache2/access.log ]
&& /usr/lib/cgi-bin/awstats.pl -config=mydomain -update
>/dev/null

it gets executed every 10 mins and the webpage stats gets updated.

Based on /usr/share/doc/awstats/README.Debian, I have already given read
permission for "others" user to access.log:
debian:~# ls -l /var/log/apache2/access.log
-rwr-r- 1 root adm 6671031 2009-10-26 18:00 /var/log/apache2/access.log

Not sure what am I missing?

I have a similar issue; I also did a lot of Googling but with minimal
results.

I have this problem on 2 different Dell laptops with Lenny 5x; they both
have to use the b43-fwcutter package for the Broadcom wireless so I've
assumed it is due to the lack of a real Broadcom driver (this might be an
incorrect assumption). It is pretty random, sometimes it connects 3 boots
in a row, sometimes one boot, before it won't connect the next time.

I thought it might have to do with ifconfig since it must be "up" for any

Well, well well. I had installed squeeze on this machine right after lenny

And I never looked at it again. Following your reply I move the xorg.conf file

You are using Debian testing, so I guess you use NM 0.7.
If so, you have two options:

Mark the connection as system connection in nm-connection-editor ("Available to
all users"). This way the key is stored system wide (in
/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/). That's basically what wicd does.

The other option is, to use libpam-gnome-keyring. Set your keyring password the
same as your login password, and on login your gnome-keyring will automatically
be unlocked.

How to get X to autostart after upgrade to Squeeze?

2009-10-26 Thread Dennis Wicks

Greetings;

After my recent upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze, X no longer
starts automatically at boot. I have to use startx and it
then starts the X session for whoever did the startx. No
logon or other validation required.

Under Lenny, X would start at boot and pop-up a logon window
so you could logon as any user registered on the system.

Does anybody have any idea how to get the old behavior back?

Many TIA!!
Dennis

Thanks for the information. I didn't know that, but that's because I

I've been plagued in the past by a similar looking issue; fortunately
for me, it hasn't reared its head in a while. Here's the bug report and

what happened when you ran dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, if you ran it.

so let's see, you have three computers all running debian squeeze they all are
the same except they have different video cards, unless you're referring to
'onboard' video chips as it were?

If you have 'xserver-xorg' and 'xserver-xorg-core' installed then you should be
able to install 'xserver-xorg-video-intel' if that doesn't make your intel
graphic card go, we're just going to have to give up all hope.

You may or may not be able to do so.

Install mdadm (apt-get or aptitude) if you don't have it
already.

Plug in the drive.

Check /proc/mdstat to see if anything is being mounted. If so,
you have a /dev/mdX filesystem available to you now.

If not, you want to investigate the partitions:

mdadm -Q /dev/sdb1
(and the same for the other partitions)

Do you have all the partitions that were part of a RAID set? If
so, you can assemble them:

mdadm -A /dev/md0 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdb2...
or something similar.

If you don't have needed partitions, you may not be able to get
anything. You may be able to reassemble a partial set of a RAID1
or RAID5 set.

I think it really depends on the subject matter, and even more
importantly, whether the community supports such an effort. For
example, I know there is (or was) a very high quality mailing list for
the e-vehicle community (electric car conversions, design, discussion,
etc). But, likewise, there doesn't seem to be one (not that I've
looked hard) focusing on suzuki motorcycles (for which there are
several excellent web forums).

If you are really interested in a quality email list for a particular
subject, and can't find one, then perhaps you should start it? Also,
some forums have gateways to mailing lists. At one point we had a
problem around here because of such gateways and a particular debian
forum. If there really is a high-quality forum you'd like to
participate in via email, then perhaps you can push them to, or help
them, implement a gateway solution.

I think the difference is that wicd stores the networks passwords in
plain text in it's conf (/etc/wicd/), when NM is hashing them using the
keyring facility.
In the upcoming Ubuntu Karmic NM is still using the Gnome password
manager to store hashed passwords, but without the need to enter the
keyring passwd at connection time, maybe you could inquire how they are
doing it (some policykit magic I guess...).

Or only users from a particular group to run it only after providing their
password; sudo is *very* flexible. It can do nearly everything su, suid, and
sgid can so, plus some.

Suid scripts don't work unless your shell/interpreter is also suid. This is
usually a bad idea.

It looks like the only input the script takes is the output of gconftool --get
of a specific key. Under the assumption that an attacker can set the "$state"
variable to whatever they want, they can make the script fail, but I don't
think they can do anything malicious. I'm not a security expert by any means.

I'm not sure but it seems that libpam-gnome-keyring package is what you
are looking for:

Package: libpam-gnome-keyring
[...]
Description: PAM module to unlock the GNOME keyring upon login
gnome-keyring is a daemon in the session, similar to ssh-agent, and
other applications can use it to store passwords and other
 sensitive information.

This package contains a PAM module that will automatically unlock
the keyrings using your login password, making gnome-keyring usage
transparent without losing its security benefits.

When installed, this module will automatically be used by GDM and
gnome-screensaver to unlock your keyrings when logging in and when
 unlocking the screen saver.

Network Manager wants to access default keyring

2009-10-26 Thread Preston Boyington
I have Debian Testing with the Gnome environment setup on a friends'
laptop. In an effort to make things easier to use I'm trying to stick
with Network Manager because of the PPP support for the USB cellular
broadband.

Each time the computer is started (GDM auto logins to user) NM asks to
access the default keyring. How do I get it to automagically work
without having to input the keyring password each time?

Wicd does this automatically without this annoyance so how do I set NM
up to work the same way?

So far my searching hasn't found a good workaround. Any help will be
appreciated.

lenny) and since then (I think it was caused by the upgrade, but I'm
not completely sure) running "pycentral" with any commands causes a
segmentation fault. As you can guess this breaks many postinstall and
prerm scripts. I can't install or uninstall those packages except when
I remove the references to pycentral which is really not a solution.
The kernel log shows something like this:

pycentral[27790]: segfault at 0816b000 rip 0816b000
rsp fff4183c error 14

Does anyone have any idea on this error? I really don't think this is
a hardware error because It's a vServer and this only occurs by
running pycentral. Even though the address doesn't change (always
0816b000)

auto-starting an application in LXDE

2009-10-26 Thread peasthope
I haven't found lxsession-edit in a menu in LXDE.
It will start with the Run gadget or from a
terminal of course.

Once running, only two applications are listed:
XScreensaver and GNOME Keyring Daemon.

There is no manual entry for lxsession-edit.

How can lxsession-edit start an application
other than the two listed in its menu?

Thanks, ... Peter E.

Re: Recommended Debian package for hard disk cloning

2009-10-26 Thread Holger Rauch
Hi Johannes,

first of all, thanks for your quick reply. Do you know of any reliable
way to clone (concerning the LV+VG parameters) and changing the VG
name (though I admit that this question is more appropriate for the
LVM mailing lists)?

Thanks in advance & kind regards,

   Holger

I would probably do it by hand (one off case) or with a script:
- - create partition(s)
- - create LVMs
- - use rsync for cloning

In the past I also used to use partimage. I don't think it could clone
LVMs, though.

Recommended Debian package for hard disk cloning

2009-10-26 Thread Holger Rauch
Hi,

which Debian package would you recommend for hard disk cloning,
provided that UUIDs related to both file systems and/or the LVM (PVs,
LVs, VGs) should be changed in order to be unique?

Is there a package around that's able to take care of this or would
you recommend writing a custom shell/Perl/Python/Ruby, etc. script?

It would be useful if the package is included in/backported to Debian
stable (Lenny).

Thanks in advance for any hints!

Kind regards,

 Holger

Thanks, I hadn't know about that. I had seen some other way, but this
is better since it is just for that purpose. The program is in the
parted package if anybody else wants to check it out.

Fwd: Inquiry:External USB modem and Remote PC Access?

2009-10-26 Thread hadi motamedi
 Dear All
Please be informed that I checked for the presence of internal modem on
my Debian server , as the followings :
#dmesg |grep -i modem
#lspci |grep -i modem
#lshw |grep -i modem
According to the output , it seems that my Debian client does not contain
internal modem . So I decided to add external USB modem and make use of an
PCAnyWhere like application that enables for Remote PC Access . Can you
please do me favor and let me know how can I add the external USB modem to
my Debian host and please propose for an PCAnyWhere like application that
can be installed on my Debian client and enables for remote dialup
connection (as the PCAnyWhere does for the MS Windows clients) ?
Let me thank you in advance
Regards
H.Motamedi
