If you are not running a 64-bit kernel, you have to specify ARCH=x86_64 for _all_ make invocations. Well. I didn't know that there was to do it with all. Using the following steps I was not interrogated: # cd /usr/src/linux-2.6.32 # cp /boot/config-`uname -r` ./.config # make ARCH=x86_64 menuconfig # make ARCH=x86_64 # make ARCH=x86_64 modules_install # make ARCH=x86_64 install But when boot, the process is interrupted with the following message: request_module runaway loop modprobe binfmt-464c It draws attention to me that this has not happened after compiling after to have booted with amd64 kernel using the same environment (KVM VM with host amd64). The unique difference in the process was the aggregate of the ARCH=x86_64 variable with each invocation of make. Reading [1] and [2], I already found the cause of this problem. The configuration in Executable file formats / Emulations must be the following one in order to use a kernel x86_64 in userland 32. [*] Kernel support for ELF binaries [ ] Write ELF core dumps with partial segments M Kernel support for MISC binaries [*] IA32 Emulation * IA32 a.out support I didn't have this problem after to boot with kernel amd64 because to configure the new kernel I was based on the configuration of running amd64 kernel, in which these options already were setted of this way. Then, making an analysis of the tests that I was doing, I reached these results: a) Traditional compilation: a.1) Having booted an i386 kernel and userland 32: # make ARCH=x86_64 menuconfig # make ARCH=x86_64 # make ARCH=x86_64 modules_install # make ARCH=x86_64 install It does not present questions during make and it boots ok enabling the options mentioned above. a.2) Having booted an amd64 kernel and userland 32: # cp /boot/config-`uname -r` ./.config # make # make modules_install # make install It does not present questions during make and it boots ok. b) Debian way compilation: b.1) Having booted an i386 kernel and userland 32: # cp /boot/config-`uname -r` ./.config # make ARCH=x86_64 menuconfig # fakeroot make-kpkg clean --cross-compile - -arch amd64 # fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --cross-compile - -arch amd64 \ --append-to-version=-dgb kernel_image kernel_headers It does not present questions during make and it boots ok enabling the options mentioned above. Another thing that I have noticed is that the packages are generated with a suffix i386, although after boot the kernel is x86_64: linux-headers-2.6.32-dgb_2.6.32-dgb-10.00.Custom_i386.deb linux-image-2.6.32-dgb_2.6.32-dgb-10.00.Custom_i386.deb b.2) Having booted an amd64 kernel and userland 32: # cp /boot/config-`uname -r` ./.config # make menuconfig # fakeroot make-kpkg clean # fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-dgb kernel_image \ kernel_headers After to execute this last line, the process starts but I begin to be interrogated again by configuration options. If in this environment (having booted an amd64 kernel an userland 32) I use the syntax mentioned in (b.1), I don't have this problem. It would seem to be that for some reason fakeroot make-kpkg finds a complete environment of 32 bits. Still using the syntax of (b.1) in this environment, I obtain the packages with a suffix i386 again. linux-headers-2.6.32-dgb_2.6.32-dgb-10.00.Custom_i386.deb linux-image-2.6.32-dgb_2.6.32-dgb-10.00.Custom_i386.deb Regards, Daniel [1] http://www.informaticien.be/index.ks?page=forum_topicid=5388index=0 [2] http://saalwaechter-notes.blogspot.com/2008/10/requestmodule-runaway-loop-modprobe.html -- Fingerprint: BFB3 08D6 B4D1 31B2 72B9 29CE 6696 BF1B 14E6 1D37 Powered by Debian GNU/Linux Lenny - Linux user #188.598 signature.asc Description: Digital signature

RE: Configure Lenny client respond to snmp queries
You probably want snmpd as the package to install for the machine to query from. Snmp as the package to install to make these queries. I suggest you get very familiar with the snmpd.conf. It is quite useful and extensible. You can pretty much interface any local script with it to make it query things that normally aren't queryable with snmp. For instance, I use it to monitor my mail queues, rejections, etc. A quick google search led me to this article, might be useful to you. http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/snmp.htm -Original Message- From: vr [mailto:debian-u...@iotk.net] Sent: December 23, 2009 9:01 AM To: debian-user@lists.debian.org Subject: Configure Lenny client respond to snmp queries Hello list, I tried to get a lenny based box to respond to snmp queries a few months ago but failed. This time around I am using a VirtualBox with netinst-x86 lenny installed as my client. The system that I will have poll lenny is using Cacti (but does not have too). Upon issuing aptitude search snmp I get 43 results back. After Internet searching for a bit I'm finding what appears to be somewhat dated documentation for setting up snmp. My questions; does anyone have any pointers to current doc they've used that covers what I'm trying to do? Not these in particular, but you do have answers for them. It's worth looking around a bit when this happens, sometimes it *is* because of a restructuring, and you need to delete an existing package or two to break the logjam. By the time this becomes an annoyance, there will usually be bug reports and other discussions, and you can find out what's going on. A current sid irritation is 25 packages (on my particular system) that won't go because some xorg stuff was uploaded to sid by mistake, and a major revision is actually due soon. That stuff will just sit there until it happens. I also have lynx and tex issues, but they started in the last day or two and I'm not bothered about them yet. -- Joe -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Thanks Stan but my modem is powered from the PC - it has no other power supply. (Here is a picture of the model I have, which I found on the internet: http://www.sbazar.cz/img/big/74/2917974_1.jpg ). Re: rolling-back, reverting system upgrades?

This is the purpose of the testing distribution, to test packages for breakage so that bugs don't migrate into stable with the next release. With all due respect, if you aren't prepared to deal with occaisional breakage, then you should be running testing. In the old times with Gentoo, breakages occurred more often than needed, but it was quite easy to revert an upgrade: each tree---stable and testing---usually contained several, similar versions of the package (much closer than in Lenny and Squeeze). That meant that whenever something went wrong after a package upgrade, I simply reverted to a previous minor version, got on with my work and waited for a new version to pop up. as I said above, you can often manually fix things using dpkg and the old debs. Sometimes you'd have to force it. But to really make this work, you have to keep careful tabs on what packages were upgraded and cause the breakage. So far as I know there is no automated way of doing this. Two of the machines I use regularly dual-boot into testing. I use one to examine the new packages. The other I leave alone until it seems safe. I like to think I *qualified* myself for testing by learning to use aptitude. In lenny, I had to pin lots of backports packages. (Luckily I didn't get into some system wide pinning scheme.) With aptitude preferences set correctly, I never have to worry about a package being upgraded until I select it and I can always put a package on hold if it concerns me. My rules for running testing with aptitude: 1. Don't treat testing as a rolling release. Get used to ignoring a sometimes inflated pool of upgradable packages. 2. Consult aptitude's dependency handling and play with it, you might noticing things to help undo log jams. 3. Only upgrade packages that you are comfortable with or well read on, as the case may require. Maybe start here: http://packages.qa.debian.org/common/index.html. 4. Install apt-listbugs. 5. Put packages you are unsure of on hold in aptitude. 6. Set aptitude preferences to display changes in advance and read first. 7. Set aptitude preferences not to delete obsolete packages and don't clean the cache to often. 7.a. However, this may not help with upgrades because the prior version will still be replaced I think. 8. Do the above on a schedule so it doesn't get rushed. I have started to look into apt-cacher to see if that can pool older versions, given the disk space. Currently, my brain doesn't have much info absorption capacity left for that. The other thing, given disk space, might be to dual-boot two installations of testing, one to test testing. sup dog, I heard you like testing so I installed a version of testing with your testing so you can test testing while your run testing. Maybe too much work. :) -- Freeman -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org
