C'est très dans l'esprit Gnu-Linux tout ça. 

Mais c'est mieux quand il y a de la documentation. J'ai un peu souffert
avec mon trackball logitech marble pour lequel j'ai du expérimenter au
moins 5 méthodes de conf sans doc pertinente dans les périodes de
transitions xorg.conf/mouse == xorg.conf/evdev == hal == hal-mature
== plus-de-hall== udev == ouf il y a gpointing-device-settings

Pourtant le défilement simultané xy avec la boule, on ne peut plus s'en
passer quand on y a goûté !

Effectivement j'ai vu un truc pas du tout sérieux comme ça (-_-); 

J'avoue que, très flemmard, j'ai installé mon Acer TimelineX par le
wifi, le réseau gigabit a l'air d'avoir du mal avec le kernel 2.6.32
mais ça marche out-of-box sous ubuntu 2.6.35.

 C'est étonnant parfois le matériel sous un même model, mon AA1 à une
 AR242x.

Il faut toujours bien regardé les numéro de révision, c'est très courant
que les assembleur changent du matériel en cour de route, souvent pour
des raison de cout ou d'approvisionnement.
Du coup, on pense parfois acheté un modèle qui tourne out of the box,
alors que la carte réseau a été remplacé par un modèle non supporté,
c'est du vécu :)

[debian-user] différences entre script terminal ?

Bonjour la liste,

je suis perturbé par les différences d'interprétation des commandes dans un 
terminal et dans un script pour les noms de répertoire contenant des espaces :

exemple simplifié :
la commande en console 
moi$ cp /home/mon_home/mon_fichier_source /home/mon_home/mon_rep\ destination
fonctionne.
... de même que
moi$ cp /home/mon_home/mon_fichier_source /home/mon_home/mon_rep destination


... mais
moi$ var1=/home/mon_home/mon_fichier_source
moi$ var2=/home/mon_home/mon_rep\ destination
moi$ cp $var1 $var2 
me renvoie : 
moi$ cp: la cible « destination » n'est pas un répertoire

j'ai, en vain, passé des heures à jouer avec des , des ', des ` ...
puis avec exec, eval, des redirections ... etc.

Bref, en panne d'inspiration, et dans l'espoir que quelqu'un me trouvera une 
explication simple, je me tourne vers vous.

Je me sens obligé de réagir, l'Advanced Bash Scripting guide est une _daube_
(non, ce n'est pas vendredi).
Ce guide est très ludique de part les exemples pratiques qu'il propose de
tester, il montre plein de petits scripts qui peuvent être de bons exemples
quand on ne sait pas où commencer. Il ne parle pas que de bash, mais montre
aussi parfois comment se servir d'outils géniaux comme bc.

Le problème est que au niveau de bash, le _langage_ , il est imprécis, il n'y
a jamais de discussion sur la /correction/ des scripts écrits, et pourtant
nombre d'entre eux devrait être réécrits. La plupart des scripts contiennent
des erreurs qui ne se voient pas au premier abord, comme des utilisations
de variables sans guillemets doubles, des   for line in `cat fichier`; ...
des utilisations à tort et à travers d'eval et de expr. Nombreux sont ceux
à avoir voulu proposer des corrections, des solutions jugées meilleures...
Aucun d'entre eux n'a reçu de réponse.


Si vous ne savez pas trier le bon du mauvais, ce guide vous apprendra à écrire
des *BUGS*, pas des scripts.

  0. utiliser un filtre bayesien comme spamoracle et une liste blanche

  2. si besoin, développer en Ocaml les services HTML sous ocsigen

De mon coté j'ai :

1) postfix avec du greylisting
2) un procmail qui lance
   - spamassasin
qui classe les mails suivant une série de règles
qui transfère des mails dans des boîtes externes


 J'ai par ailleurs une extrême réticence envers PHP, language que je
 connais peu, et que je déteste pour son insécurité. En particulier, je
 ne connais pas les bonnes libraries PHP à utiliser, et je sais qu'il
 faut sans cesse les mettre à jour, ce qui m'est pénible.

 d'envoyer les messages vers Free.fr. Je dis ça mais je connais mal
 Exim, utilisant Postfix à la place.

 Donc d'après moi, il faudrait : messages (fetchmail ?) - exim -
 spamassassin - exim - smtp.Free.fr. On peut aussi y associer procmail
 pour la redirection vers Free.fr.

Aïe (sur le fetchmail): fetchmail sert à récupérer les mails qui sont

 Renvoyer les spams à leur expéditeur n'est pas une bonne idée et est
 habituellement déconseillé. Certains spammeurs n'attendent que ça.

En effet. En plus souvent les adresses sont fausses donc c'est un innocent
qui va à sont tour recevoir du spam.

 Moi
 je les envoie dans une boîte perso afin d'y détecter les faux positifs
 (quelques unités par mois) avant mise à la poubelle. Le destinataire
 peut aussi les filtrer vers un répertoire spécial en se basant sur
 les en-têtes.

Si vas ha hacer un script de arranque revisa el fichero
/etc/init.d/skeleton.

00 quiere decir que inicie con la prioridad S00 en rc2, 3, 4 y 5. no te lo
recomiendo. mejor.

19, 20  etc. revisa tu rc#.d y mira cual si en que posición queres que
arranque. p. ej.

update-rc iptables start 20 2 3 4 5 . stop 20 0 1 6

o solo,

update-rc iptables defaults

no veo ningún error en tu script de iptables ;-)

  Estoy compartiendo internet desde una tarjeta de red de mi estacion de
 trabajoa un switch..

 Segui un buen tutorial sobre esto y resulto a la perfeccion (ademas cree
 un
 DHCP para no estar configurando a mano los equipos que cuelgan de mi PC.)

 el tutorial lo segui desde aca

 equipos..perrroo tengo un detalle mas menos molesto.

 al dejar el script en /etc/init.d/ para que se ejecute siempre al incio de
 la sesion... no lo puedo configurar y me devuelve esto.

 con rrconf tambien pasa lo mismo y no hay caso de que se ejecute solo al
 inicio, entonces debo ejecutar cada vez el scrips manualmente y esto es
 muy
 molesto...es solo ese detalle si me pueden ayudar a que se ejecute solo

 no tener que hacerlo manualmente.

Si miras cualquier script en '/etc/init.d/' verás que hay una
 sección al principio tipo:

  ### BEGIN INIT INFO

  # Required-Stop: $network $remote_fs
  # Default-Start: 2 3 4 5
  # Default-Stop:  0 1 6
  # Short-Description: Gateway6 client

Esto indica a los programas 'update-rc.d' y similares cómo y dónde
 deben incluir el script.

Así que tienes dos opciones. O añadir la cabecera de forma correcta,
 o incluir el enlace en el '/etc/rc*.d' que desees.

De todas formas, a mi parecer la manera correcta de llamar al script
 que indicas es cuando la interfaz de red se levanta, por lo que utilizaría
 el comando post-up en la interfaz adecuada del fichero 'interfaces'.

El proyecto creo que no duró mucho tiempo en cerrarse, la noticia
salió en barrapunto, pero el dominio ya está en manos de los

Gracias, agradezco la simplificacion del codigo, creo que se puede
hacer en bash, es una tarea sencilla la de contar caracteres, creo
que se puede hacer eso y mucho mas en bash.

El inconveniente que tenia, era que se mostrara la progresion numerica
de los caracteres cada vez que se introducia uno y creo que Marc lo
consigui muy bien, solo que tengo que afinar esos detalles y nada mas.

Agradezco tus comentarios.

 Marc:

 Cuando copie el codigo y vi los resultados, la verdad es que me gusto
 la manera de resolver este problema, me parecio genial, de hecho me
 puse a reir por la genialidad de la respuesta.

 Solo que al estar aprendiendo, no se que tanto sigjifica esto, pero
 funciona a medias, te diré porque:

 1. No me acepta los espacios, tengo que poner la barra inversa \ y
 posteriormente tengo que presionar la barra espaciadora.
 2. Si me equivoco, no puedo borrar y ademas cada que presiono la tecla
 delete, me lo cuenta como un caracter.
 3. Cuando llega al final de la pantalla, vuelve a escribir todo y
 dicha pantalla se llena del mismo mensaje cada vez que escribo un
 nuevo caracter hasta que termina pareciendose una piramide.

 Decir esto, no significa que no valore el script, quisiera yo tener el
 conocimiento para desarrollar la genialidad con la que contaste los
 caracteres.

 Agradeceria si me ayudaras a resolver estos inconvenientes, y aun si
 no lo hicieras, creo que ya hiciste mucho, en lo que a mi corresponde
 me pondre a investigar porque me has mostrado el camino para llegar a
 donde quiero llegar.

 Para finalizar cuando pulsas enter tendrías que poner algo parecido a
 esto al principio del bucle:
 if [ $c == $(echo) ]; then break; fi


 Hasta aquí y sumando las mejoras de javier :) tendriamos esto:

 while IFS= read -r -n1 c; do
 if [ $c == $(echo) ]; then break; fi
 a=$a$c
 echo -en \r$a   $(($(echo $a|wc -c) -1));
 done


Como lo comente anteriormente, se esta resolviendo el problema y cada
vez la solucion esta mas cerca. Ahora con esta mejora la barra
espaciadora ya es reconocida, ahora solo falta el borrado, que ya lo
comence a estudiar y ademas la repeticion de todo el texto cuando
llega al final y se vuelve a escribir una y otra vez.

 Y Ahora para borrar tendrías que usar algo parecido a esto:

 if [ $c == $(echo backspace) ]; then a={$a%?}; fi

 Desgraciadamente esto ultimo no te va a funcionar, No se como hacer un
 echo del carácter backspace !! :D  Pero si logras comparar $c con
 backspace ahí lo tienes :) .


Esto es mucho mas sencillo que cuando comence, la respuesta esta
cerca, la puedo oler, puedo ver funcionando este script cuenta
caracteres jejeje.

Puedes coger ese caracter con:

backspace=$(echo -en '\b') al principio del script y luego usar
$backspace para comparar

Sigo sin tener un bash a mano para hacer la prueba oportuna, pero creo
que podría funcionar como dice Marc

Buenas Javier, el carácter backspace es un poco puñetero. Yo estoy
probando con gnome-terminal y al parecer cuando pulsas backspace el
carácter que le llega a bash no es \b sino \x7F. No se si las
otras terminales se comportan igual. Bueno que para que al menos a mi
me funcione tengo que hacer la comparación así:

Hola.

He comprado un disco duro externo con conexiones E-SATA y USB...funciona
bien, por usb cuando lo arranco lo reconoce y lo monta con la etiqueta
de volumen, todo ok.

Por E-sata lo reconoce pero no lo monta automáticamente, tengo que
hacerlo...como hacer que lo monte automaticamente tambien por E-sata?
Uso Squeeze. He probado varias cosas pero ninguna ha funcionado.

Hola, tendrías que estudiar las reglas de udev para poder hacerlo, acá
hay un ejemplo pero usando usb:

Sería bueno que indiques que cosas has probado que no han funcionado,
así se puede ayudar mejor y ya no escribimos en vano.

Problemas en e17

Hola amigos tras haber cambiado de entorno grafico de gnome a e17 he tenido 
algunos inconvenientes pero el que mas me es de urgencia es el manejador de 
archivos que trae el e17 es muy malo a mi parecer solo seleccionando archivos 
me vuelvo un ocho por que no selecciona el que quiero sino el que le da la gana 
entonces he instalado pcman pero quiero dejarlo por defecto en el e17 o mejorar 
el que trae por defecto el e17

Conexión por wifi sólo a veces levanta

Hola lista, estuve buscando por ahí alguna solución pero no he encontrado,
pasa que tengo internet por telmex, la compañía dejó su modem y luego yo
agregué un router inalámbrico, lo configuré para que diera dhcp, a un
comienzo para no complicarme instalé wicd para administrar las conexiones,
pero aún así en ciertas oportunidades no funcionaba, ya que estaba buscando
una solución a eso pensé porque no enterarme un poco de como iba el tema de
administrar la red manualmente, así ingresé al archivo
/etc/network/interfaces y agregué las líneas

iface eth1 inet dhcp
wireless-essid nombreDeMiRed

luego de eso encendí el computador al otro día y funcionó, luego reinicié y
al tratar de levantar con ifup eth1 no funcionaba, quedaba esperando
ofrecimiento dhcp del router pero no recibía.  Seguí averiguando sobre el
tema y leyendo la wiki leí que debía instalar un cliente dhcp, instalé
dhcp3-client pero sigue pasando lo mismo.  Luego de eso leí por ahí que algo
tiene que ver el archivo /etc/resolv.conf y el contenido era:

domain cpe.telmex.com.cl
search cpe.telmex.com.cl
nameserver 192.168.0.2

la última línea es la única que estoy seguro q está bien porque es mi propio
router inalámbrico, los otros deben ser datos de mi proveedor de internet
que la verdad no sé que dicen.

Hoy en día estoy usando una configuración de ip eestática que puse en mi
archivo interfaces:

iface eth1 inet static
address acá le puse la ip que me debiera dar el router (en el router uno
puede reservar una ip a una mac determinada, así que esa agruegué acá)
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.2
network 192.168.0.0
wireless-essid NombreDeMiRed

así me conecta pero hay un detalle al encender que es:
#ifup
demora un poco, busco la conexión y no hay
#ifdown
no demora nada
#ifup
demora un poco, busco conexión y sí tengo.

mmm, creo que me falta mencionar que mi hardware es broadcom bcm4312, mi
sistema squeeze y mi kernel 2.6.32-5-amd64

Eso, espero primero que más menos sean los datos necesarios para pedir ayuda
(OT) aunque he observado con agrado que las personas de esta lista y de la
comunidad en general están siendo más comprensivas con personas que somos
novatas, en mi opinión esto ayudará a los que nos hemos cambiado por

Creo que los discos e-sata los trata como internos, no como externos. 
Podrás automatizar el proceso con alguna regla de udev como te comenta 
Carlos pero poco más :-/

Si has configurado DHCP en el router, en el equipo cliente no debes de 
poner ningún dato (ni IP, máscara de red, puerta de enlace, DNS... nada). 
Todos los datos los tienes que recibir del router.

Las conexiones wifi son caprichosas... poco podrás hacer salvo:

- Intentar mejorar la comunicación con el AP (aumentar la cobertura, 
mejorar la señal, reducir el cifrado...)
- Esperar a alguna actualización del driver (o de wpa_supplicant)
- Revisar los registros para comprobar si se producen desconexiones/
microcortes con el AP

com a versão mais atual. Eu estou usando a versão 0.70 do msn-proxy e na
instalação eu compilei os pacotes e eles forma instalado num Debian Lenny.

A versão 0.7 foi lançada em março de 2009. Bem natural que as versões mais 
novas do protocolo não sejam suportadas por esta versão.

mod_mono

I installed mod_mono and was playing with the settings when I eventually
ganked it completely and couldn't get it to work again. I was playing with
the the config files.

Anyways I decided in all my wisdom to remove (purge) mod_mono and
reinstall it. However after the removal I decided (yet again in all my
wisdom) to delete all the associated folders for mod_mono thinking I would
be back to a fresh start.

I then reinstalled mod_mono

Now I get the following error.

The assembly mscorlib.dll was not found or could not be loaded.
It should have been installed in the `/usr/lib/mono/2.0/mscorlib.dll'
directory.

I have searched for the file mentioned, and guess what, it isn't anywhere
(no surprise to some of you).

I have googled and have tried everything I can to fix this.

I would really appreciate it if someone would be so kind as to not only
tell me what an idiot I was and I shouldn't play with things I don't know
about, but to also point me to some information that may help me to
resolve this problem I created.

System=lenny
Install=apt-get install mono-xsp2 mono-apache-server2 libapache2-mod-mono
mono-gmcs mono-utils

Java Run Time Detection

It seems strange to ask this now, at the end of the season, but my wife 
has suddenly needs use of my windows machine which I previously used for 
this purpose.


This url points to the live timing of Formula 1 races

It uses a Java plugin to provide the timing screen.

When I go there with Linux/Iceweasel it tells me it needs to install the 
java plugin - but then fails to install it.   I am not sure what the 
issue is - java is installed on my machine.  Is there a separate plugin 
to link to that command line runtime?


Is this a problem with the site, with Iceweasel or what?

WFFM. Tested in Squeeze, Iceweasel 3.5.15 and flashplugin-nonfree
installed.

Works for me with chrome + squeeze sun java + sun java plugin.

What you seem to have lost is your GRUB's booting Windows entry, 
nothing to worry about :-)

First, was windows menu there before? This is important, because if it 
was there, it should stay. Auto-deletion of any GRUB's menu entry could 
be considered a bug.

If it never was present, then it's fine. Automatic detection of other OS 
is not always possible, although desirable. Anyway, you can always 
manually add an entry for your OS.

..yup, my understanding is motion more than prefers mmx, the 
k6-2 cpu offers mmx hardware and the i486 kernel does not offer 
support for mmx hardware, so those mmx jobs are instead done 
emulating mmx in ffmpeg userland or somesuch, googling mmx 
ffmpeg shows a fair bit of disussions around these 2 around 
A.D. 2005 thru A.D. 2008, so plan A is a k6-2 kernel. ;o)

Problem with btrfs supporting in debian-installer daily build.

Hi,
  I got a daily build version of debian netinst CD yesterday and used
it to deploy a machine.
  I choose btrfs for root device. And it cannot boot up since the
btrfs module cannot be loaded. A blur memory from my experience with
btrfs rooting, I think this is the fault of initrd scripts. Two other
modules (one of them is crc32) should be included in initrd.img.

 A bit of offtopic, sorry. Dear Debian Team, would you, please, to pay
 attention to the installer first? Let us find and pin up bugs, post wise
 comments, suggest features, analyze patches, flood up the mailing lists
 _after_ the system being installed. Isn't it an installer a thing that
 has to be polished first?

I've found some issues (let's say that way) in Debian installer for 
both, Lenny and Squeeze. For lenny it was impossible to get GRUB legacy 
installed and Squeeze was having some trouble with filesystem formatting 
options (already corrected, I guess).

 In addition, it seems to be useful to inform a human side of the
 installation process what currently is going on in any situation, not
 success stories only.

Jumping to tty console where messages are being logged is the common way 
for debugging problems, at least for an expert installation. You can also 
save the log for later review. Nevertheless, being a bit more verbose in 
ncurses GUI should not hurt :-)

This should be reported as a bug.  Probably against initramfs-tools.

Looks like it's a module dependency issue, not a bug in the initramfs
generator.

Note: btrfs is currently still a new and experimental filesystem,
so you should probably not use it for critical uses just yet.  In
practice it's working fairly well (I've had my /home on it for six
months without incident, but there have been bugs with e.g. dpkg
575891 which caused loss of files under /var/lib/dpkg/info on
btrfs filesystems, noticed in build chroots).  So there may be other
buggy software which behaves badly on btrfs.

I don't see any errors here, please post the output of

glxinfo | grep rendering

(glxinfo is in package mesa-utils). You might also want to get rid of 
the xorg.conf file, unless you are running Lenny (you did not specify).

Thanks to everyone for all of the suggestions.

The issue is now solved.

I resolved it as follows:

# aptitude install os-prober  (It was not installed)
# os-prober
# update-grub


First, was windows menu there before? 
It was, and I don't know when or how it was deleted.
I assume that it happened during an update.
I can't say exactly when, as I haven't looked to use the windows
partition for a while.

OK, steps 1-3 went fairly smoothly.  Now, however, I'm unable to get
grub-install to work.  When I do the following:

mount /dev/sda1 /newboot
grub-install '(sd0,0)'

I get the error message:

/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for /boot/grub (is /dev
mounted?)

I get the same when I do grub-install /dev/sda1 .  Clearly, I have not done
some crucial preparatory step for installing grub from the live rescue CD to
the new hard drive's partition.  Any suggestions?

 activated at boot time?

 started making unhappy noises and refuses to boot.  I discussed the
 situation with knowledgeable people and they diagnosed that indeed the hard
 drive had failed and needs replacement.

 I have a recent backup of the hard drive which I made using dump, and I
 have a new hard drive on order.  My recovery plan is as follows:

 1.  Burn a new netinst CD from a recent build (I am running Squeeze, btw)
 2.  Replace the hard drive
 3.  Use the netinst CD to set up the filesystem on the new hard drive
 4.  Recover the backup using restore.

 Here's my question:  should I allow the netinst CD to install Debian on
 the new hard drive, given that I plan to use restore to restore everything
 and thus would overwrite any new installation?  I realize that I can
 probably tune the action of the restore command so that it only restores
 what I need from the backup and doesn't touch a new OS install; but I think
 that the process of making the decisions for what needs to be restored and
 what does not would be complex, time-consuming, and error-prone; so I would
 rather just restore the whole thing.

 Any advice you can offer would be welcome.

For Iceweasel and the few multimedia I've tried, this works.
Multimedia in this Squeeze now includes sound!

Perversely, Skype no long produces an audible ring.
As if it now tries to ring the on-board Intel sound device 
rather than the designated USB device.

Oh well.  Squeeze will probably be released within a year 
and Skype will offer a new release soon after and then 
sound might work for multimedia and Skype.

fontconfig / defoma segfault

Hello altogether

Today I ran into some strange problem. While reinstalling munin, I got a
segfault, while fontconfig was getting installed. I played around a
little bit, and think I located the root of the problem at defoma. For
example if I run:

apt-get install fontconfig

I get:

because:
/var/lib/defoma/scripts/fontconfig.defoma did not return a true
value at (eval 4) line 1.

Updating font configuration of fontconfig...

So I would really appreciate your advice on how to erase this issue.

netatalk trouble

I actually need netatalk (as opposed to the recent poster) in an office 
full of Macs.


I've been trying for quite a while, so some stuff is already there. When 
asked to install, Aptitude says:

So sure enough, it's there. But 'killall atalkd' (or a full pathname)

Do I have some some flip-flop toggled incorrectly or something? I've 
been running netatalk for years with (relatively) no problem.


Last May, I broke my brains falling of a bike, tossing my head into a 
pile of rocks. I'm still recovering. So please allow a little slack for 
bent brains -- I just spent half a day trying to remember the name of 
program that displays a sorted list of running processes. Thank you, 
Google, for finding 'top' for me. And stay away from bicycles!

What you are missing is that the search is case sensitive.  The Wh
in White is *not* matched by wh with lower case 'w'.

There are no more matches available for wh other than why and so

As to 'why', there are headaches.  For example, recently audacity
(which wasn't in dmo at the time) wouldn't work with the version of
ffmpeg from dmo:

is *extremely* responsive, quickly put that version into his repo, but

IIUC, this contains codecs and stuff for h264 video.  There are

As per other messages in this thread, it's apparently quite rare to
encounter video requiring the codecs contained in this package.  I'd
remove it, but remember that you've done so, in case you even find a

That is a grep option.  It doesn't apply to bash's history search.

As far as I know there is no option to ignore case in bash's history
search.  But I don't know very much about such things.

Packages - what's the best way?

  I'm quite new to debian and I'm getting my head around dpkg,
apt-get, aptitude and synaptic.  Does anyone have advice on the best
way to handle a .deb package?  Can I make up my own repository of .deb
packages and point apt-get at that to install packages?  I've
installed one or two small things (gcc and gnu make) using dpkg, but I
wondered if there was a better way to do this.  I've just downloaded
opera and it comes in a .deb package, so this is my next task.  apt or
dpkg - or even synaptic?

Your primary method of installing programs is going to be apt-get, especially 
if your new to linux. Apt is in essence a front end that runs ontop of dpkg and 
uses remote repositories to fetch, install, remove, and upgrade programs, 
including the dependences of those programs. This is a major advantage nowadays 
because before programs like apt all you had was dpkg and you had to work out 
the dependences yourself, many times layers of dependences. (e.g. Program you 
want depends on lib-x, which in turn depends on lib-y, which in turn depends on 
lib-z, and so forth)

Aptitude, synaptic, and the like are in turn front ends to apt, user interfaces 
to make it easier to manage packages.

It's your choice as to whether you wish to use a front end or apt directly, I 
guess some are intimidated by the command line and apt's many commands 
(apt-get, apt-cache, apt-key, etc.)

Personally I have studied and use apt directly but that's because graphical 
interfaces change too much for me, you upgrade a system and all the sudden you 
find the programs you like have totally changed, or have depreciated and been 
replaced. The Command Line isn't as fluctuate, it's practically universal, 
regardless of whether your system is debian based, red hat based, unix based, 
whatever...

Subject: Packages - what's the best way?

  I'm quite new to debian and I'm getting my head around dpkg,
apt-get, aptitude and synaptic.  Does anyone have advice on the best
way to handle a .deb package?  Can I make up my own repository of .deb
packages and point apt-get at that to install packages?  I've
installed one or two small things (gcc and gnu make) using dpkg, but I
wondered if there was a better way to do this.  I've just downloaded
opera and it comes in a .deb package, so this is my next task.  apt or
dpkg - or even synaptic?

Yes.  Many of us do that for packages that we create ourselves.  But
if you are new to Debian then this isn't something I recommend for you
to do yet.  Get some familiarity with the system before trying such
advanced topics.

What!?  Why?  In the future just use apt-get to install things that
you want.

  $ sudo apt-get update
  $ sudo apt-get install gcc
  $ sudo apt-get install make

If you are compiling programs then you will want to install the
build-essential package at the least to pull in many of the tools that
you need.

  $ sudo apt-get install build-essential

And if you have a package in mind that you want to tinker with and to
rebuild yourself in different ways then you can install all of the
build dependencies for that package.

  $ sudo apt-get build-dep grep
  $ sudo apt-get build-dep coreutils
  $ sudo apt-get build-dep whatever

And if 'sudo' isn't configured for you then that is the first thing
that you will want to do. :-)

  # visudo
  rob ALL=(ALL) ALL

Yes.  For Opera on Debian see the instructions on the wiki which go
into detail what you should do.

To be able to answer that one would need to know exactly what is in the
initramfs.  And unfortunately all distros are different and I'm not
particularly familiar with Ubuntu.

Maybe if you 
  mkdir /tmp/initrd
  cd /tmp/initrd
  zcat /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-5-amd64 | cpio -idv

 and then have a look around and particularly report etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf
 and anything else that might be interesting.

If the mdadm.conf in the initrd is the same as in /etc/mdadm, then it
*should* work.

Yea, there is no error, but for some reason You saw after xserver
has turned it on, it turns it off. Is it because I have second monitor
connected?

Here it is:

direct rendering: No (If you want to find out why, try setting
LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose)

 (glxinfo is in package mesa-utils). You might also want to get rid of 
 the xorg.conf file, unless you are running Lenny (you did not
 specify).

 movies from them.  And, heavy swapping cause disk wear. ;o)

Oh, no I have RAM enough - it has 192 MiB, and does not use it swap at
all.

Pure or do you have any packages from backports or so (especially 
kernel)? Please also post the complete /var/log/Xorg.0.log
