nfs locking daemon?

2004-07-23 Thread Christian Schwarz

Hi!

Is there a special "nfs locking daemon" for NFS-clients?

I'm running a server with nfs-kernel-server and on the server there is a
"lockd" process. If I try to log into GNOME 2.2 on the client (which has
nfs-mounted home directories), GNOME complains about "a problem with your
operating system configuration": "A common cause of this error is that the
"nfslock" service has been disabled." Unfortunately, I can't find a
"nfslock" package in Debian.

Thanks for your help,

Chris

GNOME 2.2 and NFS locking problem

2004-07-16 Thread Christian Schwarz

Hi!

After upgrading a diskless client (root fs mounted via NFS) to the GNOME
2.2 backport packages, I get the following error message when logging in
into X:

"Could not lock the file "/nethome/wile/.gconf-test-locking-file"; this
indicates that there may be a problem with your operating system
configuration. If you have an NFS-mounted home directory, either the
client or the server may be set up incorrectly. See the rpc.statd and
rpc.lockd documentation. A common cause of this error is that the
"nfslock" service has been disabled. The error was "No locks available"
  (errno = 37)"

Via google, I found hints that switching the NFS server from
nfs-user-server to nfs-kernel-server solves the problem, but this didn't
fix it (no change).

Does anyone have a solution for me?

Here is my configuration:

Server:
  Debian 3.0 (woody)
  Kernel 2.4.23
  nfs-kernel-server pkg version 1:1.0-2woody1
  /etc/exports:
 /clientsacme(rw,no_root_squash)
  "ps axf|grep lock" says:
 707 ?SW 0:00 [lockd]

Client:
  Debian 3.0 (woody)
  Kernel 2.4.16
  GNOME 2.2 backport from
   ftp.acc.umu.se::mirror/mirrors.evilgeniuses.org.uk/debian/backports/woody/
(also nfs-kernel-server pkg version 1:1.0-2woody1, should not matter)
  "mount" says:
monet:/clients/10.1.1.6 on / type nfs (rw)
  "ps axf|grep lock" says:
  99 ?SW 0:00 [lockd]

What I already tried:
- switching from nfs-user-server to nfs-kernel-server
- specifying "lock" option when mounting the home dir
- symlinking .gconf* directories to a ramdrive

Any help would be great!

Thanks in advance,

Chris

New web page: Debian Resources

1998-03-08 Thread Christian Schwarz

Hi folks!

I've recognized my Debian web pages. They can now be easily accessed via

  http://schwarz.developer.debian.org/

There is a new web page about `Debian Resources on the Internet,' see

  http://schwarz.developer.debian.org/resources/

which contains links to Debian and related projects. As a starting point,
I've included all my Debian links from my bookmark list, so the list is
far from being complete. If you have some new links for me, just tell me
and I'll add them to the page if I think they are of general interest.

The new URLs for the other pages I maintain are

  Debian Policy home page:
http://schwarz.developer.debian.org/policy/

Lintian's home page (that's a Debian package checker):
http://schwarz.developer.debian.org/lintian/

  Debian Documentation Project (DDP):
http://schwarz.developer.debian.org/doc/

  Debian Keyboard Configuration Project:
http://schwarz.developer.debian.org/kbd/

  Debian Release Roadmap:
http://schwarz.developer.debian.org/roadmap/

  Debian Logo Contest (old):
http://schwarz.developer.debian.org/logo/

(Of course, the old URLs are still working. But I guess the new ones are
easier to remember :)

Any feedback about these web pages is highly appreciated!

Thanks,

Chris

Logo Page updated

1997-12-01 Thread Christian Schwarz

Hi folks!

I'm really happy that we finally have a logo for Debian GNU/Linux!

I've just updated the Debian logo pages at

http://fatman.mathematik.tu-muenchen.de/~schwarz/debian-logo/

The pages include all new submittions that I've received since the last
logo page, the old logo pages and their feedback pages, a statistic
page, and an overview page.

The logo development process started in Sep 96. Since then, 66 authors
submitted 289 (!) logos, that makes 4.3 logos per author! I received 3496
comments through the feedback pages!

Thanks a lot to all the logo authors and to all people that gave us
feedback!

Cheers,

Chris

This is a bug, so please file a bug report against emacs.

The policy concerning /usr/local has been changed. The package may create
empty directories below /usr/local, but it must not fail if this is
impossible (because /usr/local is mounted read-only).

This new policy already described in the draft version 2.2.0.0, which will
become "official" in the next few days. You can have a look at it via

http://fatman.mathematik.tu-muenchen.de/~schwarz/debian-policy/draft/ch3.html#s3.1

Feel free to ask, if you need more info.

There is a new "Overview Page" which shows all logos that have been
submitted so far, ordered by popularity! In addition, there is a new

logo (small, large, colored, grayscale, b/w).

I reworked all pages today, so I appreciate _any_ comments, suggestions,
or critics about the new pages.

The Future of Debian's TeX system: tetex

1997-02-25 Thread Christian Schwarz
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hi folks!

Some time ago I started a discussion about the future of Debian's TeX
packages. The old packages had lots of bugs and some of them were based on
old upstream sources.

We had two possibilites: continuing with our own tex packages (i.e. fixing
the old bugs, upgrading to newer upstream versions, included some newer
patches to web2c related stuff) or basing our tex system on another UNIX
tex distribution, as NTeX or teTeX for example.

The discussion on debian-devel showed me that there were good arguments
for both sides. Initially we planned to continue with our own tex packages
but then Chow Chi-Ming and Christoph Martin both came up with a debianized
tetex packages. There were some problems with the directory structure of
tetex, but these were easily fixed (with help of Thomas Esser, the author
of tetex).

We hope that this was the right decision and will make life easier for
Debian's TeX users.

The new tetex packages will be included in Debian 1.3. There are now part
of the unstable distribution and will replace the old packages in about a
week. If you want to help you could download these new packages and test
them.

Thanks,

Chris

I'm really sorry about this all.

The technical problem was: The cgi script referenced in the html page was
still referring to the wrong location (the one which I tested at home). I
fixed this and it is (hopefully :-) working now.

The other problem: I'm not the fatman administrator and don't have root
access. These (really offensive) messages were installed by the admin. I
don't like these either and have contacted him today and asked if they
could be replaced.

ANNOUNCE: New Logo and Feedback Page for the Debian Logo (v4)

1997-01-05 Thread Christian Schwarz
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hi folks!

I just installed the new Debian Logo Page (v4) today. You can have a look
at it via

http://fatman.mathematik.tu-muenchen.de/~schwarz/debian-logo/

The new page contains 9 new and 21 old logos and uses HTML forms to
make it easy for you to tell us your opinion.

We collect all the comments we get this way and make a ``feedback
page'' out of it. The current version contains 204 comments. Thanks a lot
to all that told us their opinion!

Thanks a lot to all who submitted a logo so far! Our plans are to have an
official logo until the next Debian release.

If you think you can make a better logo or have a nice idea feel free to
send me your drafts. We have set up an extra mailing list for discussing
these issues: debian-publicity@lists.debian.org

Our plans are to have a collection of, say 20 nice logos soon, so that we
can start an election. Since we don't have much time left we would appreciate
it if people would try to improve the old logos instead of making new ones.
So if you want, just take on of those old logos, have a look at the comments
at the feedback pages and try to improve it.

The next logo page (v5) will be installed on Sun, 19 Jan 1997, the
dead line for logo submittions is 10:00am MET (+0100) this day.

Cheers,

Chris

ANNOUNCE: New Logo and Feedback Page for the Debian Logo

1996-12-22 Thread Christian Schwarz

Hi folks!

I just installed the new Debian Logo Page (v3) today. You can have a look
at it via

http://fatman.mathematik.tu-muenchen.de/~schwarz/debian-logo/

The new page contains 31 new and 8 old logos and uses HTML forms to
make it easy for you to tell us your opinion.

We collect all the comments we get this way and make a ``feedback
page'' out of it. The current version contains 290 comments. Thanks a lot
to all that told us their opinion!

Note that we present you the logos in an early state of development. Most
of them need further improvement and that's why we ask you about your
opinion.

Thanks a lot to all who submitted a logo so far! Our plans are to have an
official logo for the next Debian release.

Some people contacted me about troubles with the CGI script. I hope that
these are fixed now and that the new location works more reliable than the
old one.

If you think you can make a better logo or have a nice idea feel free to
send me your drafts. We have set up an extra mailing list for discussing

Re: Support for Page Scanners (ie. HP ScanJets)

1996-11-18 Thread Christian Schwarz

I have a HP ScanJet 4C here and use it with Debian/Linux. It works great.
You have to include the "generic SCSI interface" to the kernel and install
the hpscanpbm package.

I prefer xvscan, a patched xv version that allows scanning directly into
xv. It's great! Note that you have to pay for this, but it's only US $50.
Note also, that you will propably need a little more RAM than what you
need if you use Windoze. (It seams as xv consumes much more memory when
scanning highres than the Windoze progs do.)

But that's the advantage of a cross compiler. You can develop
software for Win95 under Linux! If I have to compile under Win95, I loose
all the advantages of Linux: X, emacs, fvwm, etc.

> Does anyone have experience compiling Cygnus' source on Linux?
Well, I think the maintainer of the win32 packages should have! I tried to
contact him but didn't get a response, yet.

I'm thinking about what sense it makes to have these Debian packages with
a cross compiler, that's lacking the necessary DLL! Getting the source
from cygnus and compiling it under Linux is not a satisfying solution,
since that's what these Debian packages are good for.

Is there someone out there that _uses_ the crosscompiler from the Debian
packages?

Perhaps I should report the missing of the DLL as a bug, since it makes
those packages useless.

Any hints?

Missing cygwin.dll for win32 cross compiler

1996-10-23 Thread Christian Schwarz

Hi!

Does someone out there has a cygwin.dll for
win32gcc_2.7.2.cygnus.960412-1?

I wrote a simple hello world program in C and tried to compile it (also
with -static) but when I run the program under Win95 (yuck!) I get a
message that I need cygwin.dll. I did an archie request and found 3
different versions, but none works with the output of win32gcc.

I also had a look at the cygnus ftp/www server but I only found beta
releases of the newest version (with .tar.gz's being >20 mb!).

Thanks in advance,

Re: rescue disk set

1996-10-05 Thread Christian Schwarz

I was looking for a rescue disk, too. I posted to debian-devel list a few
weeks ago. The answers were that none exists, so far.

My problems was that I need a tar (gnu tar would be good) to be able to
restore my backups (if I should need that some time). I got the answer
that the root disk contains a "star" program that extracts tar archives it
gets via stdin.

But I also think that a _real_ rescue disk would be fine. I had one some
time ago for Slackware. Nice was that it also contained the manual pages
for important programs as mke2fs, tar, etc.

And some version of vi would be fine to have on the disk, too, since I
don't like ae very much.

I would like to have it work with the standard Debian boot disks. I don't
think this is a problem. If space is enough we could use this as the
"only" ramdrive that is loaded after the boot disk. If that's too much for
a single disk we could build something that is mountet on the standard
root disk tree. The old Slackware rescue disk used a gzipped filesystem (I
think via zfs but this should be obsolete now) and had the kernel on the
disk too. This was nice since one needed only one disk. Perhaps we could
create a fs that's 2880k (those who have only 4mb ram would need two
disks, propably).

As Brian suggested, it would be nice if this would be done by the
root/boot disk maintainer. AFAIK this is Bruce Perens but he wants
to pass maintaince to someone else.

Cheers,

Chris

Re: How do I use longtable in LaTeX

1996-09-26 Thread Christian Schwarz

There is a LaTeX extension called ``supertabular'' that should do exactly
what you want (at least I hope so). Unfortunatly it isn't included in on
of the available Debian TeX packages, but just get it from CTAN (TeX
servers) and install it somewhere in /usr/local/lib/texmf (you might have
to adjust the TEXINPUTS path).

If you can't find the supertabular file, just drop me a note and I will
send it to you (it's just a single .sty file with 10k).

Well, a smart admin (that's infact what I would do then ;-) would make a
diff between his changed version and the config file of the old package.
He would then discover that you changed the color (or whatever it was),
remove his config file, install the new version of the package and have a
look at it, how he could change the color in the changed environment.

So I think (as stated in another mail here) we have to choose if
a) app-defaults is part of the _code_ or
b) app-defaults is a configuration file of the program
Debian has chosen a) and there are goods arguments for a) since one
actually can *change* the code via action lists, for example (the
reaction on an event). I didn't know that first and therefore I
suggested (see another mail in this thread) that we add a comment to
the (very small) paragraph in /usr/doc/readme.debian.

I was used to change the app-defaults file but I think I will live as
good as before if I make my changes in /etc/X11/Xresources since I
know there are good reasons for it.

ghostscript cuts of my characters

1996-09-21 Thread Christian Schwarz

Hi!

I've got problems with TeX->DVI-Postscript. Small characters are cut off
at the right hand side if I use gs-4.01. This doesn't occur with the old
gs-2.62.

It would be nice if someone else could try this out and report if this is
a specific problem of my configuration or a general one (in which case I
should probably report this as a bug).

I'm using the following packages:

ii texbin 3.1415-5 TeX - The typesetting system
ii amsfonts2.2-3 Additional Fonts from the AMS for
ii dvipsk 5.58f-5TeX DVI-driver for Postscript
ii gs 2.62-2 Postscript interpreter with X11 and
or
ii gs 4.01-4 Postscript interpreter with X11 and

Here is a simple test: Just run this through TeX (plain tex, no latex)

\font\demo=eufm8 scaled 707
\demo)
\bye

This should typeset a closing parenthesis `)' in the euler font.
Then convert the DVI file into a postscript with dvips:
dvips -o test.ps test.dvi
My dvips/config.ps says:
[snip]
% Default resolution.
D 300

% Metafont mode. (This is completely different from the -M command-line
% option, which controls whether MakeTeXPK is invoked.)
M CanonCX
[snip]

Now if I print it with gs (or preview it with ghostview) I get the whole
parenthesis when using the old gs and just a part of it with the new gs.

Any hints?

I'm working on the wavplay package--that's actually a small program that
lets you play (and record) WAV files. I only have one problem: The current

Re: Shouldn't go app-defaults in /etc/X11?

1996-09-20 Thread Christian Schwarz

Hi!

Ok, you (Michael) made me change my standpoint. It's propably better to
consider app-defaults as part of the code and then it's ok if it stays
under /usr.

BTW, I just did a `grep app-defaults *.conffiles' in /var/lib/dpkg/info
and discovered, that there are a few packages specifying the app-defaults
file as conffiles (also in my xblast package--I will fix it). I'm not sure
if we should report this as bug.

You mentioned the file debian.readme and it was pointed out, that the
passage about app-defaults is too short. How about an improvement (too
avoid threads like this ;-) :

Please note that this distribution expects you to leave app-defaults
files unchanged. The app-defaults files are considered as part of the
code. That's why the directory is located in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 instead
of /etc/X11. If you want to customise your X applications globally, put
your customisations in /etc/X11/Xresources.

Re: How to create a "Packages" file?

1996-09-20 Thread Christian Schwarz

This is a simple script that creates the Packages files: Suppose you want
to create the file for distrib buzz and binary-i386:

touch /tmp/noverride
cd buzz
dpkg-scanpackages binary-i386 /tmp/noverride buzz/ > Packages.n
mv Packages.n binary-i386/Packages
gzip -f -q binary-i386/Packages
cd ..

I have a script that goes over the whole Debian hierarchie on my private
FTP server whenever I make a change.

Note that the `touch /tmp/noverride' creates an empty file (if it doesn't
already exist) which seams to be necessary, but I don't know why.

I also discovered another problem: When there a several versions of a
package in the same directory, dpkg processes them in the order they
appear in the directory (not sorted, as you see them with the default ls
options). So if the newer versions comes first, the older version will be
included in the Packages file.

And it looks like dselect has the same problem with installed from a
CDROM or local dir. These `access methods' seem to process not the list of
selected packages (as ftp access method does) but process each file they
find in the directory. When there are several versions of a file that's
selected, dselect upgrades/downgrades the package as they appear! That's
why I always use FTP, even if the FTP server is the local host!

Does someone have any hints?

Well I had a look at the file (and surely Lars too) but the point is that
I'm not satisfied with the argument, that the readme says that's the way
to do it.

My suggestion of tagging the files as conffiles was thought as a solution
to your problem, if the files change. Of course, this will need the
app-defaults directory be moved over to /etc/X11, but that's what we
were talking about.

So I think the point is the following: Do we consider the app-defaults
files as part of the program (code), or as configuration files. In the
former case, they should stay in /usr, in the latter they should be moved
to /etc/X11 and be tagged as conffiles.

Sorry, if I didn't express my standpoint clearly.

Re: Mouse

1996-09-18 Thread Christian Schwarz

By default, X11 uses /dev/mouse, I think.

So perhaps there is just a symlink
/dev/mouse -> /dev/ttyS0
missing. (Of course, you have to refer to the correct mouse device,
/dev/ttyS0 is "COM1", so if you have a bus mouse, you will have to change
this to the appropriate device.)

So doing something like this (as root)
ln -sf /dev/mousexyz /dev/mouse
will do the job.

Cheers,

Re: dvips top margin

1996-09-18 Thread Christian Schwarz

Are you using ghostscript? I discovered a similar problem a few days ago:
I worked with gs-4.01-2 and all the offsets were correct as specified in
TeX, correct in DVI (xdvi) and PS (ghostview) and on the printer.

But I had to switch back to gs-2.62-2 because of the problem, that
characters get cut off at the right hand side (I posted this to this list
a few days ago, but didn't receive any hints.)

In gs-2.62 the output is shifted about 7mm. I just read a hint in an
ghostscript README, that the were some bugs in older gs versions in
handling of offsets.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Shouldn't go app-defaults in /etc/X11?

1996-09-16 Thread Christian Schwarz

Hi!

I just browsed the Linux FSSTND (v1.2) but haven't found a comment about
the app-defaults directory.

Backups would be much easier if _all_ the configurable files are in /etc
and /usr can't be mounted readonly if one has to change the app-defaults
file. (Shouldn't, as a simple rule, all files that are referred by the
debpkg-conffiles be placed in /etc ?)

Well, couldn't the files in app-defaults be marked as config files
("DEBIAN/conffiles") in the packages? Then dpkg creates checksums of these
files and when a package is updated, it can be replaced (if there were no
changes) or it can ask the user what he wants to do with it (replace,
leave under different name, i.e. add .dpkg-dist extension).

I think all this is done automatically by dpkg now (at least in the
newest revision of dpkg). I've seen this working with a few other
packages, since I upgraded to "unstable" a few days ago.

gs cuts off my TeX characters

1996-09-12 Thread Christian Schwarz

Hi!

I've got a problem with ghostscript and TeX. I convert a TeX file to
postscript with dvips and print it with gs.

If I use gs-4.01, the characters are "cut off" at the very right side (of
each character!). This is not much so you have to look very carefully to
see it, but when you use italic, it's quite obvious. Note the this is not
a gsfonts problem, since dvips converts the TeX fonts into a
Postscript/bitmap font.

When I use gs-2.xx, this problem does not occur. I used the same
postscript file to test this, so it isn't a TeX or dvips problem.

I haven't tried it with gs-3.xx, but I remember that I had the same
problem on my old Slackware system, where I switched from gs-2 to gs-3 and
the problem appeared, but I never tracked the error down. (This also
means, that it isn't a Debian specific problem.)

Does someone else have a similar problem or a hint what I can try? I can
provide more infos and/or a small demo file so this can be tested on
more systems.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

If not, we could start a Logo contest, just as the Linux Logo Contest. I'm

An logo would be nice for disk labels, CD covers, www.debian.org, etc.

How to place Debian files on CD-Rom?

1996-08-27 Thread Christian Schwarz

Hi!

I want to make my own Debian CD-R. Does someone know where to place the
files on the CD so that the installation can run completely of the CD?

I'm looking for an installation that doesn't require the generation of
disks. I want to have it like in old Slackware times ;-)

1. Boot MS-DOG
2. Select Kernel to boot through some DOS menu program that
fires up loadlin
3. Kernel should read the ramdisk from the CD.
4. Basic configuration of Debian.
5. Base disks should be read from the CD.
6. ...(same as usual)...

If nothing like this exists right now, I will implement this. I think
something like that would be also nice for the other guys that create
Debian CD's, as Infomagic, etc.

Cheers,

ANNOUNCEMENT: anacron (was called 'pe' before)

1996-08-23 Thread Christian Schwarz

Hi everbody!

I've just uploaded anacron_1.0-1 to the master server.
Note that I changed to name from `pe' to `anacron' which sounds better
(I think ;-).

If you downloaded the beta from the URL I posted here, I would suggest
that you install anacron, move your old configuration /etc/petab over the
new /etc/anacrontab and move all spool files from /var/lib/pe/* to
/var/spool/anacron/*. Then you should remove the old version with purge:
dpkg --purge pe

For those who are intrested, here is an extrait from the readme:

This is anacron (like `anac(h)ronistic') -- a cron-like program
that doesn't go by time.

It is useful for jobs, that don't have to run at a certain time, but
in a certain period. (That's why anacron was called `pe', periodic
execution, before.)

By not specifying a certain time when a job has to be executed
it is possible to use anacron on systems that don't run continously
but are powered on at different times every day.

ANNOUNCE: pe package -- try 2

1996-08-19 Thread Christian Schwarz

Hi!

I'm sorry, but the permission to the files I referred to yesterday were
wrong. I had just fixed them and the files should now be available for
everyone who is intrested. Thanks for all the mails!

For those who didn't get it yesterday:

pe (periodic execution) is meant to be a simple replacement
for cron(8) on systems, that are just powered on for a few
hours a day. On such systems, cron jobs are not very useful
since one often can't say, when the system is running. So,
for example, the nice jobs in the /etc/cron.daily directory
aren't executed. (I didn't had the log rotating running on my
client machine for 4 weeks now ;-)

Here are the URLs:

http://www.informatik.tu-muenchen.de/~schwarz/pe_0.2-1_all.deb
http://www.informatik.tu-muenchen.de/~schwarz/pe_0.2-1.tar.gz

Cheers

Chris

PS: I'm not quite sure if the name "pe" is good for what this small
utility does. So if someone has a better idea, email me...

ALPHA: pe package - periodic execution

1996-08-18 Thread Christian Schwarz

Hi!

I just rewrote my pe program and made a debian package. Here is what it's
for:

pe is meant to be a simple replacement for cron(8) on sys
tems that don't run 24 hours a day. On such systems, you
can't normally specify a certain time when a job is to be
executed. If you use pe you don't specify a time to run a
command but how often the command should be executed. This
   period is given in days.

Normally, pe is started after bootup. Since you probably
don't want all your jobs running at the same time directly
after bootup (that's the time when you normally log in and
start your programs) you can specify a delay in minutes.
pe waits this long before starting your program.

pe has its own log files the tell it, when the jobs were
executed last time so it always knows, which jobs it has
   to run.

Best way of using pe is to add a cron entry that starts pe
right after midnight, so in case your system is running
for several days, the jobs still get executed on the right
   intervall.

If this is useful for others too, I want to include it in the Debian
distribution. I just tried to upload it to ftp.debian.org, but there is a
note, that uploads should go to the /home/Debian/... directory which
doesn't exist and I didn't had permissions to enter the
/pub/debian/project/Incoming directory.

So for now I had just placed it on my web space. Every one can get it via
http://www.informatik.tu-muenchen.de/~schwarz/pe_0.2-1_all.deb
and the source is
http://www.informatik.tu-muenchen.de/~schwarz/pe_0.2-1.tar.gz

Just contact me about bugs, spelling or grammar errors, or about any
future enhancements.

It would be nice if someone can give me some hints about how it can be
included in the main distrib. Yes, I read all the FAQs/HOWTOs but they
seem pretty old and I didn't find any information.

Cheers,

Chris

I use an ATI Win Turbo with Mach 64 Chip (I think). Therefore I needed
XFree86 3.1.2E (release D is expired). This is what I did and it might
also work for you:

1. Install Debian as usual, with all X stuff and the Mach64 Server.

2. Install the XFree86 3.1.2E Mach64 Server Binary (this is only the
/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_Mach64 file!) over the old server.

Using the new server with the old libs/binaries works fine. I think it is
the best way to first install the old server and then overwrite it, so
debian thinks that the depencies are correct. Otherwise it will complain
about not having a X server installed.
