In potato it's libncurses5-dev, you'll also need bin86.

Voodoo Banshee Help

2000-01-26 Thread David Blackman
Hey All,
I desperatley need help with my new voodoo banshee card. I
finally got X working, sort of, and fixed the consoel by using the
server from 3dfx. But I can't get glide to work.

The debs are hopelessly broken:
Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
libglide2-v3: Depends: device3dfx-module but it is not installable

I tried to install the RPMs, the test programs didin't work.
I tried to rebuild the source RPMs, the test programs didin't work.

Also, teh kernel module just tells me 3dfx: unable to set MTRR

If you have a voodoo banshee or voodoo3 working under debian, please
let me know.

Re: voodoo3 on debian

1999-12-18 Thread David Blackman
add this to your /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://debian.oftheinter.net/ x335-slink/

then do apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade

then alein THE_3DFX_RPM.rpm, and dpkg -i the resulting deb.

OK?

break my system right now, oh and kernel 2.2.13

What should I be worried about? WIll any of my packages break? What major

An open letter to the debian community

1999-12-05 Thread David Blackman
I love Debian, I use Debian, I administer Debian at my
school. Why do I use Debian? Because my school uses it. Why does my
school use it? Because they didn't like the GUIness of RedHat, and
Slackware is just too much of a hassle. Plus, they were drawn to apt-get.

Debian is a wonderful development model. Anyone can
contribute to it. There isn't a large administrative hierarchy, the user
base is the developers, the testers, and the end users. The bug
reports are open to everyone. And everything must be Free Software,
Free Software in the sense that it must be both open source, and
modifiable. Open sourced program FooBarX, which doesn't allow modified
binaries, is placed in non-free, for the user to download, but it's not
part of the standard distribution. Program FooBarZ is closed source,
binaries only, it's not part of Debian.

So what's wrong with this? Debian is supposed to be a
completely open source operating system, where everything adheres to
the Debian free software guidelines. This is an operating system where
I could replace every instance of Debian with foobar, and sell it for
three thousand bucks a copy. And doesn't non-free have all those open
source/closed binary packages, and all the packages under actual
patents? And isn't a 4k script that I apt-get, which downloads and
installs netscape for me in Debian friendly directories, just as good
as including the 17 meg binary on the CD?

No it's not.
Take this hypothetical conversation:

Okay, I've just installed Debian/GNU Linux (Don't forget the GNU!), it
only took me 3 hours to get through all those cryptic installation
questions. now where's my full featured web browser?
Yes, but it's not Free, so you need to download it.
Now, can I edit my MS Office docs?
You might be able to look at them, but definitely not edit them!
What about this StarOffice thing I keep hearing about? <
That's a 50 meg download.
And WordPerfect 8?
25 meg download.
I want to hear sound, I just type sndconfig, like in RedHat?
No, we don't include the sound modules, you'll need to
recompile the kernel by hand.
What's a kernel? Whatever, when can I start editing graphics
for my web site?
Well, GIMP is the greatest piece of software ever, but it
doesn't include GIF & TIFF support in Debian, so you'll need to
download GIMP-nonfree. But after all, we're on a holy war to burn all
GIFS anyway, use PNGs and JPEGS.
Where's KDE? My friend at work uses it, it's so nice and easy.
You see, the QT widget set wasn't under a Free license, so we
yanked it, but now it's under a Free license, but we still have issues
with KDE, so you'll have to use GNOME.
And my TNT2/VOODOO3/G400 will work under this X thing right?
30 megs.

Get the picture? Here's approximatley 150 megs of downloads so far
(kernel
sources + KDE + QT + SO51 + WP8 + X335). Add on top of this the lack
of a packaged, up-to-date system, (Even Slackware is up to kernel 2.2.12, X335,
with KDE and GNOME, compared to Debian, this is light years ahead) with a
recent version of X, or
a recent kernel, and you begin to wonder why people are still using
Debian. It's simple -- because we're a bunch of techno-snobs. Debian's
hard to use, and we like it that way. We'll leave it to Corel to make
Debian easy. We don't WANT everyday users. We like Debian the way it
is. We like feeling superior, adhering to a higher standard of Free,
and the warm and fuzzy feeling we get from whizzing around a cryptic
console in front of a newbie.

Lately I've been thinking about forking Debian, into DWA,
meaning Debian Without Attitude. We'll drop the attitude, and the
pretenses, about what Free means, and get licensing deals with Corel,
Netscape, and Sun, to include Wordperfect, Communicator, and
Staroffice. We'll make the install process less cryptic, include
non-free on the CD and forget the Debian philosophy, that the only
way to learn is by doing it the hard way.

I'm going to get flamed for this. I know it. We don't want to
think we're techno-snobs. We want to think our distribution is
superior. We want to leave out KDE. We don't want Joe Blow to start
with Debian, if he's not man enough to face up to Debian, he can go
buy, ("Ha! Buy!", we Debian snobs say) Red Hat.

You need to install the bin86 package.

Netscape DOESN'T decompress anything.

just do tar -xvzf guilg00
let's look at that
-x (extract) v (verbose) z (gunzip it) f (read from file)
also I've never heard of the command gz, try gunzip (file); tar (file)

Is there anything special about this drive?
if it's scsi or ide it's probably supported by cdrecord.
the OS has little to do with hardware support, it's the kernel and
packages you install.

I hate modules, I've got a 627 Kb kernel. I love it.
The kernel snippet said you only had 1 scsi adapter, (the AHA)

1999-09-10 Thread David Blackman
You DON'T have scsi emulation in there.
make sure scsi-emulation is on, scsi cdrom si on, ide cdrom is off.
make sure you installed the kernel (I know taht sounds stupid, but hey, my
first kernels sat there in arch/i386/boot)

if you had scsi-emu workign you'd have 2 scsi hosts

Make those, keep out ide-cdrom support, keep in ide-scsi emultaion, keep

Re: IDE CD-R drive via ide-scsi

1999-09-10 Thread David Blackman
Okay, listen
here's the deal: you need to take OUT ide-cd support
leave in scsi-emulation, scsi-generic, scsi-cdrom..
now ./MAKDEV sg
I'm pretty sure that the /dev/scd* come pre-made
the important thing is to see if you get messages like this on bootup:
scsi0 : AdvanSys SCSI 3.1E: PCI 20 CDB: IO E400/F, IRQ 9
scsi1 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
scsi : 2 hosts.
  Vendor: HPModel: C5110ARev: 3638
Type: Processor ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Detected scsi generic sga at scsi0, channel 0, id 1, lun 0
Vendor: IOMEGAModel: ZIP 100 Rev: 13.A
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 00
Detected scsi removable disk sda at scsi1, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
  Vendor: E-IDE Model: CD-ROM 45X/A Rev: 30
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Detected scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi1, channel 0, id 1, lun 0
  Vendor: PHILIPS Model: CDD3610 CD-R/RW Rev: 3.08
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Detected scsi CD-ROM sr1 at scsi1, channel 0, id 2, lun 0
scsi : detected 2 SCSI cdroms 1 SCSI disk total.
sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 0x/20x xa/form2 cdda tray
Uniform CDROM driver Revision: 2.55
sr1: scsi3-mmc drive: 6x/6x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
SCSI device sda: hdwr sector= 512 bytes. Sectors= 196608 [96 MB] [0.1 GB]

this means for cdrecord I do dev=1,2,0

Where are my copy buffers?

1999-09-08 Thread David Blackman
I'm want to start writing perl & c programs that actually do stuff. What
I'm wondering is this:

When I'm in X windows, and I highlight something, where does it go (I
know to the clipboard), but is that an actual file I can access?

When I'm on the console and I highlight something, where does it go? Is it
a file I can access?

In a nutshell: where are the console & Xwindows clipboards located?

Use wordperfect (It's full wordperfect, for free, for linux, It's stable

Also try iglooftp (it's free & beta, or shareware & stable), or greed,
which is kindof like a console based getright.

Re: What driver do i use for a 3com Etherlink XL pci

1999-09-06 Thread David Blackman
Bell ATlantic does do DHCP based on the MAC address, so I'll give them my
win98 side fo my box, then import teh DHCp settings into linux. I have a
couple of Etherlink III (ISA) lying around, but have no more isa slots, i
just realized, my modem is ISA, if i get DSL, I can ditch my modem and now
have a spot for my (well supported) etherlink III, cool!

/dev/cdrom is just a link you make to whatever device is your cdrom (hust
liek dev/modem points to your modem's serial port, dev/scanner,
/dev/pilot). either mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdd /cdrom
or (as root) ln -s /dev/hdd /dev/cdrom;
mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /cdrom

okay?
the hdd &*%^*&%^#$*^&$%&% tells you that it's on /dev/hdd (2ndyay slave)

Re: Getting custom prompts to work under v1.3.1

1999-08-31 Thread David Blackman
you're using bash?

if you are go into the bash man page and search (that /) for ps1,
here are all the bindings anyway,
in your .bash_profile put
export PS1="[some escape key sequences and some static chars]"

\a an ASCII bell character (07)
\d the date in "Weekday Month Date" format
 (e.g., "Tue May 26")
\e an ASCII escape character (033)
\h the hostname up to the first `.'
  \H the hostname
  \n newline
\s the name of the shell, the basename of $0
(the portion following the final slash)
\t the current time in 24-hour HH:MM:SS format
\T the current time in 12-hour HH:MM:SS format
\@ the current time in 12-hour am/pm format
\u the username of the current user
  \v the version of bash (e.g., 2.00)
\V the release of bash, version + patchlevel
 (e.g., 2.00.0)
  \w the current working directory
\W the basename of the current working direc-
 tory
\! the history number of this command
\# the command number of this command
  \$ if the effective UID is 0, a #, otherwise a
 $
\nnn the character corresponding to the octal
  \\ a backslash
  \[ begin a sequence of non-printing characters,
which could be used to embed a terminal

so your basic prompt (from dos) is:
export ps1"\w$"

I just looked in the CDROM HOWTO:
that's not what teh device should be:
you must go int /dev
then ( as root) type mknod /dev/sbpcd b 25 0

also, in /etc/fstab, it's /dev/sbpcd, no partition number, it's a cdrom.

make the devie, then try to install the module.

for Howtos goto www.metalab.unc.edu/Linux

got it?

Re: Automatic software installing (like Win. 2000)

1999-08-28 Thread David Blackman
I came up with a better idea (I think).

file, we all love file, right? file has a database of what various file
types look like, so it will tell you if text is C code, html, text, a
staticly linked file, or whatever. file rocks.

All file is: a frontend to a database of file types.

Get ready:
2 programs filer & apt-get-filer
filer has a databse of file types, once a week you sync it with the great
filer databasse in the sky (work with me here people), it has an internal
list of what program will 'do' stuff to thsi file (let's say for .prc, it
returns jpilot, kpilot, pilot-mgr, pilot-link, for word docs it returns
word-view, staroffice, wp8) with me here? now you know what programs do
stuff to those files

apt-get-filer ask you what programs you want from the output of filer on
[file-type], and gets it for you, (obviously only stuff that apt can get
to, duh!), I've got an unused domain @ www.whizziwig.com, I'd love to host
filer (& help coordinate it), the hardest part woudln't be the coding (get
teh file people to help 'us' out),creating a syncable filer database would
be a bitch.

ideas?
