Backup requirement

2008-04-30 Thread Masatran, R. Deepak
My backup requirement is as follows:

Old laptop, for personal use, running Debian Etch. I intend to backup every
month to DVD via my external DVD writer, and to leave copies with friends.

I want encryption. I use LUKS, but only for my home partition.

My hard drive is 80 giga-bytes big. My partitions are home, root, alternate
root, a data partition, and a Windows NTFS that I have not used in years :-)

Current solution is to cp --archive the home partition into an external
hard drive.

I use GenISOImage and Wodim to burn my data CDs. Also, I prefer CPIO to Tar,
and command-line to GUI.

I am looking at Mondo http://www.mondorescue.net/, etc. Kindly give
suggestions.

I looked at some webpages on tunneling, but could not adapt them to solve my

Open HTML file with OpenOffice in Gnome

2008-02-27 Thread Masatran, R. Deepak
I just completed installing installing Debian Etch I386 on an AMD64
computer. A Gnome user needs to edit HTML with OpenOffice, so I
right-clicked on one HTML file, and set it to open with OpenOffice. But
double-clicking does not start OpenOffice. Nor does it give any error
message.

Currently, I told the user to start OpenOffice, and open the file with its
file dialog. The user's home directory contains material from previous
installations, specifically Debian Lenny, Debian Etch, and maybe Ubuntu 5.10
or 6.06 LTS.

The Debian Etch is from the first CD of the third point release, with a
dist-upgrade yesterday. Kindly help.

Installing Debian from partition image

2007-09-22 Thread Masatran, R. Deepak
I need to install Debian on twenty computers, for desktop use. I intend
making a partition image, and restoring the partition image on the twenty
computers. And Gilles Mocellin had suggested using DSH when it is necessary
to run a command on all computers.

Installing the partition from the Debian 4.0r0 multi-arch DVD, without any
updates to it, will allow easy replication, since the DVD is widely
available, right?

I haven't created/installed from partition image before. Are there any
pitfalls that I need to be careful of?

I am looking at Mondo Rescue, and PartImage. Which of these is better for
this task?

I looked at Beowulf, but it appears to be too much work. Is there any easy
way of making a computer cluster out of these computers that have already
been purchased?

I'm running Lenny on my desktop, and I upgrade regularly. I run X at

recently, perhaps within the last 10 days or so, the sizes of several
of my fonts have changed, and I am at a loss to figure out why. The
world has changed too much, and I no longer know where to look. My
screen resolution has not changed, and my X server knows the correct
dimensions of my monitor and has an accurate DPI calculation. It is
not something in my own personal settings, because the font used to
echo my username and draw the bullets when I type my password in gdm
 have also shrunk.

I am moving from Testing to Stable, and my Testing has the same problem. The
cause, I inferred from xdpyinfo, was that Stable is at 96 DPI while
Testing has unexpectedly changed to 75 DPI. Stable does not have such
unexpected behavior, that is why I am moving to it.

The answer will depend on why you can't boot from hard drive in the
 first place.

In an old laptop, I need to boot an external hard drive that the BIOS does
not recognize.

A different computer is giving errors, while booting a SATA hard drive. I
was told that the proper modules are not being used in the initrd, but I
have no idea how to fix that.

I guess a live CD would be useful, but how do I get the live CD to boot the

I just installed Debian 4.0, on an AMD64 computer that has a SATA hard
drive, from the multi-architecture DVD. I used expert at the first prompt,
since amd64-expert was giving errors. I chose the 2.6-amd64 kernel during
 installation.

Installation completed successfully, but when it is booted, the console
locks up, the kernel panics, and it stops responding. I tried some fiddling
with the parameters in the kernel line in GRUB, but it did not help.
 Kindly suggest a solution.

I reinstalled Debian using amd64-expertgui at the first prompt, using the
same DVD. The reinstall completed successfully, but it is unable to boot.
When I add to the kernel line in GRUB, I get:

ADDITION:RESULT

 1. nothing: Kernel panic
 2. noapic nolapic: Kernel panic
 3. acpi=off:SATA internal errors
 4. acpi=off noapic nolapic: SATA internal errors

Kernel panic looks like this:

Code: pairs of hexadecimal digits
Console shuts up ...
0Kernel panic - not syncing: Aiee, killing interrupt handler

I could not find any hardware problem. The hard drive is a Seagate 7200.10
300 giga-byte SATA. The whole computer is new.

Searching the web showed that similar problems were tackled by
adding/removing kernel modules. Can this be solved by adding/removing kernel
modules?

ALSO: I want to try the 486 linux-image, but dpkg refuses to install it,
saying that that package is only for I386. How can I install the 486
linux-image on my AMD64 computer?

  Code: pairs of hexadecimal digits
  Console shuts up ...
0Kernel panic - not syncing: Aiee, killing interrupt handler

I could not find any hardware problem. The hard drive is a Seagate 7200.10
300 giga-byte SATA. The whole computer is new.

Searching the web showed that similar problems were tackled by
adding/removing kernel modules. Can this be solved by adding/removing kernel
  modules?

if that is the case then you're probably dealing with a situation
where the proper modules are not being used in the initrd to get the
root filesystem up. you could boot a live-cd and chroot into the
system to rebuild the initrd's making sure to include all the modules,
or at least ensuring that you include the right modules...

I don't know even what initrd is, but I have seen it in the GRUB
configuration. Could you give me more detailed instructions, or point me to
some HOWTO?

ALSO: I want to try the 486 linux-image, but dpkg refuses to install it,
saying that that package is only for I386. How can I install the 486
  linux-image on my AMD64 computer?

I'm confused. do you have more than one AMD64 computer? or does your
kernel panic above only happen sometimes?

I bypassed the kernel panic by appending acpi=off to the kernel line in
GRUB. I pressed Control-C multiple times at the SATA internal errors, but I
don't know if it helped. After a delay, I got a 640x480 X11, though I had
asked for 1280x960. At that time, I tried to install the 486 kernel.

NTLM APS not working after upgrade of Testing

2007-07-16 Thread Masatran, R. Deepak
I upgraded my Debian Testing system just now, using sudo aptitude upgrade,
and my local NTLM proxy server ntlmaps, which was working till then, has
stopped
working. I guess the problem is because of the upgrade.

telnet localhost 8080 (8080 is the proxy port) says

Trying 127.0.0.1...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

Also, sudo aptitude dist-upgrade wants to remove linux-kernel-headers,
and some other packages. So, I did not dist-upgrade. Rebooting did not help.
And the previous upgrade was three-to-four weeks ago.

How can this problem be solved?

2007-04-10 Thread Masatran, R. Deepak
Let me clarify my questions:

* Masatran, R. Deepak [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2007-04-10
 1. In an external hard drive which is used on multiple computers, what Linux
kernel is appropriate? I work on Pentium 4 / Sempron / Athlon 64, and
similar computers. I am currently considering linux-image-686.

Will linux-image-686 work on the 32-bit and 64-bit AMD processors?
http://packages.debian.org/testing/admin/linux-image-686 does not say
anything about this.

 2. Can I install linux-image-amd64, and use the I386 Debian with it, on an
 AMD64 computer?

Will this work, and will it be fast?

 3. Can I set it up so that when I install a package, the I386 version will
be installed on one partition, and the AMD64 version on another?

Has this been automated, or is anyone working on automating it?

Home Directory on External Drive

2007-03-22 Thread Masatran, R. Deepak
I want to keep my home directory on an external drive and move it between
computers as required.

1. It is asking for super-user privileges to mount it. How can I avoid this?

2. Should I place /home/masatran, or /home, on the drive?

3. How can I get it to use the external drive as my home directory during
login, for the application data, etc.?

4. I read somewhere that the external drive must be named for the links to
remain permanent. Is this correct? How do I name it?

When would a user need to change the locale of a running program?

When I give a demo to my friend, I want the desktop environment to use my
friend's language.

When I give a presentation, I want the desktop environment to use the
language of the audience.

Often in a language with diglossia, the desktop environment uses exoglossia
and the user uses endoglossia. Therefore, the user will not undertand some
of the messages.

In the above cases, the feature will be useful.

implemented, by the desktop environment sending some message to the

Because Debian has a very minimal base install. You can install all of
these packages yourself. I will give specific why reasons why they are
 not in the default.

  1. Vim

nano is in the base install and is sufficient

  2. Emacs

 HUGE

  3. Screen

not necessary in a base install

Okay, but they ought to be installed atleast when Desktop Environment is
selected in Tasksel.

  4. SSHD

bad idea to start network services without the admin asking you to

Okay, install when File Server is selected in Tasksel, and ask the admin
whether to enable starting the daemon during package configuration.

Why not make the install disk also a live one? Ubuntu does this.

 OK. So go use Ubuntu.

Seriously, Ubuntu supports like two or three hardware architectures.
Debian supports like 13. A live CD doesn't make sense on all of those
and probably isn't possible on others.

A live+install disk will be useful mainly for I386 and AMD64, and can be
skipped for the architectures for which it is not appropriate. A
live+install disk will go a long way in popularizing Debian.

External Hard Disk in Debian

2007-03-07 Thread Masatran, R. Deepak
I just bought an 80GB, USB, SATA, portable, external, hard disk, and I have
some doubts:

0. Is there a Howto addressing Linux on external hard disks?

1. How to shut down? Simply unplugging the USB cable, after unmounting, is
wrong, is it not?

2. When I lock the screen, I want to remove the hard disk. Is this possible?

3. I have heard about hibernation. After hibernation: (A) Can I remove the
hard disk? (B) Can I un-hibernate on another computer?

4. I want to get the drive details: manufacturer, model, etc. I there a
program which takes the device file as input, and outputs the device
characteristics?

5. About encrypted partitions, and LVM: Are they readable, and writable from
Microsoft Windows?

6. How to copy a NTFS partition to the hard disk? I checked Parted, and
NTFS-3G but they doesn't appear to support this.

7. About partitioning: Does Microsoft Windows require the first primary
partition, to be bootable?

8. Any other information: Pitfalls, advice, comments, etc.?
