getting Realplayer to work through Netscape
Hello, I have been trying to get Realplayer G2 to work through Netscape. I have installed the Alsa drivers onto my debian 2.1 box and installed the RealplayerG2 app. When I try to access a sound file by clicking on an icon in Netscape, the G2 player comes up and says it is "Connecting", but nothing else happens. Simultaneously my xconsole says the following when I try to connect to an audio file through Netscape : modprobe: can't locate module sound-slot-0 modprobe: can't locate module sound-service-0-3 "" "" I can get my sound card to work using Alsa, i.e. I can play music CD's and listen to .au sounds files, and I have configured Realplayer G2 through Netscape correctly ( at least I think so. ) , my .mailcap file correctly lists the realplayer app: audio/x-pn-realaudio; /usr/X11R6/bin/realplayer %s If this info helps, I have a SB pci128 ( ens1370 ). The command lsmod gives the following output that is attached to the email bellow. Any suggestions? Well everyone, I'm embarrassed. I just figured out my problem. When ircii is installed it will run under the following command: % irc also the "man irc" and "man ircII" work also. ircii will not install
Today I tried to install gnupg using deselect, but it would not run giving me similar error messages to the one stated below. I then decided to forget it and uninstall gnupg using dselect. I thought everything was just find. Then tonight, when I tried to use the "man ircii", I get the same type of error message. I used deselect to uninstall ircii and then re-install it, but the same error message appears. I uninstalled it again using dselect, and then downloaded the ircii .deb package from ftp.debian.org and tried to install it again using dpkg -i ircii_4.4.3.deb, but the same error appears. When I try to remove ircii, I get another error. The error output is attached below. I have a debian slink system. Repeat Borne Shell Tutorial URL
A few day ago someone submitted a request for tutorial URL's concerning the Borne shell. I have accidentaly deleted the re:'s and I've searched the debian email archive for it, but no luck. can't get mtools to work
I used xv to take a jpeg screen-shot of the desktop. Then I tried to save it to a floppy using mcopy ( mtools ), but Linux will not let me do it. A couple of questions.
I have a couple of unrelated questions to ask about X11. 1. What is the name of the program that allows one to take a snapshot of your desk top. I have used it before but I can not remember the name. I am trying to convince a potential convert to switch from windoze, but I need some jpeg pics to show her. 2. When using Netscape Communicator in WindowMaker, there is a key-binding that can be used to change to the next email message. It is ALT- or ALT-. But this seems to change the windows in WindowMaker. Is there anyway to disable this key-binding in WindowMaker so that the one in Netscape can work. Thank you, Monte Copeland Knoxville, TN
can't get xdm to load.
Okay I have installed slink for the second time. This time around after I "dselected" and configured my debian files I immediately downloaded and installed a 2.2.x kernel. Then I downloaded and installed Xfree86 version 3.3.3. Only then did I configure the X window system with XF86Setup. When I rebooted the system I was hoping that xdm would load., but during the bootup process the last two lines that are displayed are : Checking for valid XFree86 server configuration file not found. xdm failed to load. What gives? The first time I was able to get slink up and running , the XFree86 original version and xdm loaded just fine. But this time, for some reason loading the newer version has messed up my xdm. I can get an X session up and running with no problems, but I really don't want to type "startx" every time I log in. Any possible solutions? Monte Copeland Knoxville, TN
lost keyboard config file
I actually have two problems. The first is that I have no backspace button. A previous debian-user email had a solution to get the ALT key to act as the META key in emacs. Well , unfortunately when I tried the solution, the only result was the deletion or misplacement of my X keyboard config file. When I go to XF86Setup program it comes back with the following message : "Not all of the X keyboard extension programs and configuration files are installed. The file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11xkb/symbols/us is missing. " And then it promptly exits. I have made a major BOO BOO and I haven't a clue how to fix it due to my ignorance of the Linux system. This is VERY aggravating not being able to use the backspace button. My second question is not nearly a priority as the first one. When I boot my Linux from lilo and fsck performs a file system check on my /dev/hda3, I get 4 or 5 lines saying I have a segmentation fault in line such and such. Everything seems to work fine after the boot up but it is annoying that I have a 'segmentation fault" and I don't know what to do to fix it. Do I use fsck or e2fsck to fix it or is it a problem to be concerned with. Monte Copeland Knoxville, TN
isp login promblem.
When I execute "pon" to connect to my isp, most of the time I connect with no problems. But about 10 to 20 percent of the time I get a different login prompt. In my pppconfig setup I specified that my login prompt was "sername:", and when I watch the text scroll through the Xconsole, I do get the "username:" prompt from my isp. But occasionally I get a "login:" prompt and my dial up freezes. My question : Is there a way to specify more than one type of login prompt. Or am I doomed to type "poff" then "pon" until I get the correct prompt to show. Thank you, Monte

I did not want to mess with something that worked before. Call me a chicken or just too cautious. :) But changing the lp1 to lp0 is the printcap file was the problem. My printer works now at least as well with the new 2.1.132 kernel as it did with the old one.
Trying to compile a new kernel.
This is my first attempt at compiling a new kernel. I downloaded the latest Linux kernel 2.1.132 in hopes that one day I will be able to get my SoundblasterPCI128 sound card to make some noise like music CDs , midi, Real Audio/Video , etc... But that will have to wait because at this time I can not get my printer to properly work with the new kernel. It is an Epson Dot Matrix Action Printer 5000+ . I have a Debian hamm distribution and my printer works fine with the 2.0.34 kernel. When the 2.0.34 kernel boots up I get two responses form my printer and I am able to print. When I make the new kernel and install it, I get only one startup response from my printer. The only time time that I can get it to print anything is with the command : % echo "print something!" > /dev/lp0 but % lpr test.doc produces no response. lpq command gives the following message: % lpq Printer: [EMAIL PROTECTED] 'Epson ESCP2' Queue: 1 printable job Server: pid 378 active Unspooler: pid 379 active Status: cannot open '/dev/lp1' - 'Device not configured', attempt 1, sleeping 10 at 22:29:59 Rank Owner/ID Class Job Files Size Time active [EMAIL PROTECTED]A 377 test.doc 313 22:29:59 I can't figure out what else I have to configure. I have read and reread the HOWTO's and the man pages for just about everything there is to read ( I think ) for booting a new kernel, installing modules, and configuring the printer. I don't know if I have configured my make menuconfig correctly or not ( there a MANY options ) but I know that I have enabled parallel printer support as a module. I have also gone through the motions of make modules and make modules_install . I have tried several different combinations of options in the menuconfig file but I am beginning to get weary of the whole process. Is there anyone that can tell me a list of exactly what options I am to configure into my kernel and which options I should configure as modules. Also, do I have to do any special work when it comes to getting the modules to work with the kernel? I have read about insmod, modprobe, depmod, kereld, and kmod but it was a little confusing and I have probably missed some step somewhere. I could sure use some advise about now, because I am beginning to think that I have stepped into water that is a little too deep for me. Monte Copeland Knoxville TN

I tweaked my Linux box too much!
I know you know the old saying, "If it's not broke don't fix it." I was trying to "tweak" my X Window System display by running XF86Setup utility. I had had a nice display setup already but I thought if I tinkered with it some more I could get pictures to be little sharper than they were in netscape. ( I have a 4 MB AGP Diamond Stealth Card ) After I changed some settings I saved them and exited the program. When I rebooted the system, it went through the standard boot-up routine except when it got to xdm my screen went blank and everything locked up. I figured that if I new how to disable xdm, I could boot up to just the Linux command line and run XF86Setup again, but I do not know what config file to edit in order to disable xdm. Can not get Netscape to read retrieve.

Still having trouble installing Debian.
Let me try this again. It appears that my previous email was not completely sent. I have been trying to install Debian Linux for over a week now. First after downloading and installing the base system, I began to go through the pppconfig routine but I found out that every time that I tried to log onto my isp I would get a disconnection after 30 seconds. I tried several kinds of configuration on my /etc/chatscripts/provider file but nothing seemed to work. So I decided to use WS_FTP and download all of the Debian distribution through FTP at the ftp.debian.org site. I downloaded all of the files that were contained in the binary-i396 directory keeping the directory structure intact. Then I began to install Debian using dselect. Dselect seemed to recognize where my Debian distribution was located ( /dev/hda7 ) , but when I tried to install the files that I selected dselect replied with the following message : " Looking for part 1 of dpkg-perl... Oh dear, I need to install or upgrade dpkg-perl, but I do not see the appropriate files anywhere. I'm expecting version or later as that is listed in the packages file. Perhaps you downloaded it with an unexpected name or something. In any case, you must find the file(s) and then either place it with the correct filenames ( as listed in the Packages file or in /var/lib/dpkg/availible ) and return the installation or upgrade the package by using 'dpkg --install -auto-deconfigure' by hand. installation script returned error exit status 1. " I checked my Debian files and dpkg-perl_0.1-2hamm1.deb is located in my devel directory. I do not know what to do next except to start reading the dselect and dpkg HOWTO files at the LDP web site. Thank you for taking the time to read this email and your badly needed help Monte Copeland Knoxville TN USA
Having trouble installing Debian.
Ok , this is a long one. I am new to installing Debian Linux. I tried to install it by directly connecting to the ftp site using ppp . But I kept getting disconected. I thought I would be able to install Debian that way, but when I started dselect and began the install phase, the program dselect returned the following message : " Oh dear, I need to install or upgrade dpkg-perl, but I don't see the appropriate files anywhere. I'm expecting version or later as that is listed in the Packages file. Perhaps you downloaded it with an unexpected name, or something. In any case, you must find the files (s) and then either place it with the correct filenames ( as listed in the Packages file or in /var/lib/dpkg/availible ) and rerun the stallation or upgrade the package by using 'dpkg --install -auto-deconfigure' by hand. installation script returned error exit status 1 " When I downloaded the Debian files ( it took me several nights of downloading ) , I thought I had the whole thing. All of the files are located on /dev/hda7/debian of my first hard drive. Apparently not. I need to know what to do next. I am at a loss. Monte Copeland Knoxville Tn USA
Another PPP newbie.
After having trouble using PPP to connect my new Linux O.S. so that I could ftp the Debian packages, I sent an email to my ISP provider asking what type of conncection they have, thinking that it might use "chap" or "pap". But the ISP tech supporter replied that it was a standard "text" login that asks for "username:" then "Password:". I added those exact same words to /etc/chatscripts/provider file and I finally managed to connect my linux o.s. to isp using the ppp program. This program is the one that uses "pon" and "poff". But about 30 seconds after the connection has been established, I am disconected. Using plog to observe what was happening It seems that a connection is istablished because DNS numbers and hexa decimal jargon is being tranffered back forth. Then the connection is terminated. I wish I could send you text copy of the output of plog, but being a newbie to Linux I do not know how to tranfer files to my other hard drive, which has Win95 installed on it. I need to know is it Linux that is disconnecting me from my ISP or is it the ISP that is having trouble recognizing Linux's ppp program. If it is a Linux problem does anyone have a solution.
