Well I've just been going through the messages on the matrox-linux list

the 400TV works well under linux, I will hopefully be finding out for sure
in the next couple of days, I just got the system with the 400tv up and

There is also another list you may want to try, video4linux. I have the

This would be a good place to check card info other than matrox.

I found fairly good documentation on setting TV out on G400 on the
mplayer website at http://www.mplayerhq.hu
They use framebuffer and are somewhat PAL centric, but there is another
page at http://www.cg.its.tudelft.nl/~paul/g400.html
There is another NTSC related how-to, but I lost the link to it.

 Hello,

I try to burn CD's with cdrecord, but I have a problem. I can burn an iso
image (made with isofs) to a blank disc, but when the disc gets fixated, I
directly get an error of the form 'Illegal Seek Error' or 'Segment not
 found'.

The idea I have of buring in track at once is:
 - burn track by track starting from the center of the disc
 - when fixating, go back to the center and write some final data

On the other hand, disk at once:
 - just start at the center and burn in one trip

Because the drive is pretty old, I have the idea that the laser
calibration is not very good anymore. So when the disc gets fixated, the
drive is unable to find the precise location to burn. Sometimes it works
correct (i.e. the disc gets fixated), and sometimes it fails. I have not
 found any regularity in it.

I have an HP 7500 (2x2x24) and ran into the same problem. No amount of
fiddling with it helped, so I got a new burner as they are pretty cheap
nowadays. I'd be interested in hearing if you found a way around it as I
still keep the old burner in an older machine.

Alex.

So I want to try to burn in disc at once mode, but cdrecord does not
support that option for my drive. However, the drive specs say that it is
 capable of doing that.

 For completeness:
 - my drive is a HP CDwriter 7200+ (ide drive with scsi emulation)
 - I record with: cdrecord dev=1,0,0 speed=2 -v fs=8m -eject data.iso
 - blank cd's are Arita's (my dad never had serious trouble with these)

 So, my questions:

 - is my idea of the cdburning proces correct?
 - if so, is that really the problem (and if not, what could be)?
 - how to force cdrecord to burn in disc at once

 Thanks in advance,
 Sebastiaan

 lower

However, when a follow-up to a previously caught spam is detected

When the OP reposted the spam he did so with a legal subject line,
announcing a (to me) understandable charset, a non-depreciated sender

to the previous spam so I could instantly blackhole it.

Please explain to me, in the light of this information, how I can

Nope, SBLive value barfs in situations like this regularly. For example,

Are you sure that mailboxes Maildir is the right setting? I have

I set up mbox-hook records in my mutt environment as follows:

I am not an Emacs user much, I use vi more, and I'm not that familiar

Do you have any particular reservations agains procmail? It'll do what

Change your frame buffer device to 16- or 24-bit color. You can use the
fbset program or change it at boot time. See the documentation for
  fbset for more information.

K, that got me closer. I woulnd up using:

mplayer -vo fbdev -fbmode tv -vm [file_to_play]

Anid it displayed, centered on the framebufer display. However it was

The framebuffer device does not expose an interface to the hardware
video scaler, and software video scaling is pretty slow. Mplayer (which
I have never used) may not be capable of software scaline.

I run fbtv as fbtv -mtv and it pretty much fills the entire screen, which
is what I want to replicate, while playing recoded video.

TV tuners usually include their own scaling hardware, and they draw
directly into the video output. Hence the difference. The best
solution would be to define a video mode at the same size as the AVI
files you are playing. I have special modes I use for playing DVDs, for
example, to match the resolution and frame rate of most films.

Well, it seems that mga_hal is not really required for dri. Several
people mentioned that on this list. Forget about that error. It's
something else. Another gotcha' in my case was that some of the earlier

Micronics Lightning (Light2-pp200-T) Motherboard inquiry

I'm down to the last resort - this great list.
I have this dual PentiumPro system that I'm trying to get a new HDD on
as the old SCSI one died after 4 years of service. If anyone encountered
this particular motherboard please be kind to write me if:
BIOS is PnP
Motherboard is PCI 2.1 compliant and supports bus mastering

The reason I need this info is that they are listed in the requirements to
Promise Ultra 100 ATA-100 TX2 controller. I tried an 8.4 Gb IDE HDD in
it. BIOS recognizes it, but it wouldn't boot from it. So I think Promise
controller is my only choice unless I want to find a 3Gb drive or so.
  Thanks,
 Alex.

P.S. This is on a system at work, so I can't make a mistake ;-) by
ordering the controller and finding out it wouldn't work. And yes, I
tried Google to no avail. Micron tech support never answered my email.
Our local admin says he wouldn't touch this 5 year old system with a
stick.

  Gary,

I use the same setup. In my authorized_keys2 I only have my sshd
machine's public key (cut and paste from id_rsa.pub in its entirety).
Then I copied both id_rsa and id_rsa.pub to ~/.ssh on my remote machine.
It is maybe wrong to copy both, but my ssh-agent complains if I don't
have id_rsa.pub on the remote machine. Then it basically started
working. I have

Protocol 2,1
RSAAuthentication yes

in the sshd_config

This is all it took me to do to get RSA authentication working.

I did. At the time I had to find the unofficial 2.2.17 reiserfs boot

developed in the last few months as they had older reiserfs then, but
you can still go either that way, or just install on ext2 and change to
reiserfs right after getting the base system on as I did with another

How would you go about printing to a remote printer on a WinNT

Re: Printing with Epson 880, CUPS, unstable - landscape only

2001-10-03 Thread Oleksandr Moskalenko
 Ok, here's the details :

o Canon BJC-610 inkjet printer, parallel port

o The driver from Canon doesn't work over samba -- it *needs* the
parallel port (it was originally written pre-win95 too).

o win95/98 come with some MS drivers for the 600 and 600e. I've
had it set up with the 600e driver which works over samba but
people are getting annoyed because the colors are wrong (too
 much cyan)

(I also found out that samba in win95/98 is broken in such a
way tht 98 *can't* share a printer to a 95 client for anything
but text. I must have the 95 box as the server.)

o for a recent print job I tried moving the printer straight onto
LPT1 and using Canon's driver. It keeps complaining about the
paper thickness lever even though it is in the right place.
(Once, but only once, when I switch the cable it worked but
 not again)

o I downloaded ghostscript to my Debian box and tried printing --
I can manually take PS input and get bjc output which I can
cat to /dev/printers/0 and get the correct colors, etc, from
 the printer

o I can do the same with gs on windows, but it is still a PITA

(I'm using CUPS on my Debian box, hopefully I can get it to filter
though gs automatically, then share it from there)

o CUPS allows me to specify a filter using *cupsFilter: in a PPD
 file
(ok, I ripped the PPD file off from gs because it was tne only
 place I found one)

o I can write a filter that is just a wrapper around gs

 Current status :

I specified a filter to use. CUPS' error log shows that it tries
 to run it.

I wrote the filter (an sh script) but it isn't working. It works
if I run it from the shell, but not when CUPS runs it. It gives
an exit status of 2. ('gs' is the last command run, /bin/sh is
 ash)

The next step is to determine what causes gs to give exit code 2.
Possibly it means the input was no good. The example in the CUPS
documentation shows application/vnd.cups-raster as the input type to
the filter, but I am trying to use application/postscript. I don't
see any raster to ps converter in the standard setup either.

I hope I didn't bore you too much with this :-). If you have any
 suggestion, they are most welcome.

 -D

Not boring dman, fascinating! I must say it takes the time I don't have
to go into such depth of taking CUPS apart. I hope you get it worked
out. I couldn't see clearly what machine you are trying to print from
and to which machine. Are you printing directly from your Debian box to
a printer on LPT?

Before this became clear, I was planning to move up to 2.4.10 from 2.4.4

Things are getting much more stable. Drivers especially. Linus seems to be
willing to work on core stuff still...

Can someone help me understand if I should move to the new VM or just
wait for this to all get sorted out? What is being done for the next
release of Debian? (I'm running 2.2r3 with Adrian Bunk's 2.4 packages).

I would say move the either of the two VM's in 2.4.10[-acX]. There are some
real problems with the VM in 2.4.X (X9) and interactions with other
subsystems. Things should really settle down once 2.5 starts. If you follow
lkml, there seems to be a fare amount of stuff that wants in NOW, and
conservatives think that makes the stable kernel more unstable. Given
that some kernels haven't build w/o patch in a quick pre patch, I think the
 conservatives are gloating. :)

PS: I have no idea where debian is going...I just follow it around.

I'll second that. I got a noticable performance boost and much better
swap handling out of 2.4.10. It compiled cleanly and hasn't given me any

  Peter,

Why are you afraid of making a mistake while compiling a new kernel?
Download Linus' kernel source from kernel.org. Do your:
#make-kpkg clean
#make xconfig
/*Try your best at selecting the right config options*/
#make-kpkg --revision peter.01 kernel_image
#dpkg -i kernel-image-2.4.9_peter.01_i386.deb
/*or whatever kernel source you'll download from kernel.org*/
#lilo -v
/*make sure no errors pop up there*/
#reboot
/*be happy, OR*/
Reboot and choose vmlinuz.old or whatever name LILO gives to your 2.0
kernel image and you'll be back where you started before the kernel
compile. Then
#dpkg -P kernel-image-2.4.9
/*restart the cycle with make-kpkg clean, etc., but use a different
revision number. This way never failed me in my worst days of finding
the right kernel config options for my old laptop. Make sure you are not
trying to install another copy of recompiled kernel with dpkg over the
faulty one as the LILO will place /vmlinuz.old link to the faulty
kernel, and not the 2.0 one you have working. I usually manually
recreate the right link and rerun lilo, but am not sure this is the
right way (tm).*/

What if you made smbprint a prefilter, then made /dev/null the printer

  Bostjan,

What works is this: comment out your unstable sources, uncomment

Perhaps you'd like to see http://cr.yp.to/hardware/abit.html
   before purchasing your new motherboard.

Be careful that VIA chipsets are an almost necessary evil if
you go the AMD route: there are a lot of complaints of them in
the Linux Kernel Mailing list these past months. Now, Alan Cox
says that he discovered some contacts in VIA and that
they're willing to help support VIA products with Linux in.

Of course, you could buy a motherboard with an AMD chipset
(like the 760 or the 760MP if you're into dual-processing),
but you'll have a bit more of problems getting them from your
local dealear than with a VIA board, since the AMD ones are
more expensive and produced in lesser quantities.

Personally, I'm using an Asus A7V purchased in December of
   2000 with no problems.

BTW, an advice: I have the impression (note that this is just
my *impression* and not a fact) that the Promise controller
embedded in my board is slighly better (and produces less
load) than the VIA IDE controller controlling the same hard
   drive.

To use the Promise controller (which supports UDMA 100),
you'll either have to use a patch from Andr? Hedrick
   www.linux-ide.org or use a recent (2.4) kernel.

I would appreciate recommendations for a video card which could be
auto detected or at least very easy to install for X window system.

I must say that I think that this is one of the hardest parts
in understanding and purchasing for anybody that is outside
   the scene.

It took me months to understand only the minimum of
specifications on sites like Tomshardware and Anandtech to
decide where to spend my hard earned bucks with something that
would work well with Linux (since that's the only operating
   system that I use).

I think that you should get either a Matrox G400 (or G450) or,
if you want better 3D performance and a bunch of other
high-end features, an ATI Radeon (there are some value models
of the ATI Radeon, but I don't know very much of their product
   lines).

Both Matrox and ATI are reasonably open source-friendly (with
some slight exceptions, mainly regarding TV Out) and these are
the manufacturers with which you should make business. ATI,
BTW, seems to be supporting many open source projects.

Personally, I have a Matrox G400 and I'm satisfied with it,
but I don't play games and don't know if they are good for
those things. What I do care about is some good performance in
2D and playing videos (DIVX, DVDs).

Indeed, it was a simple one line of code in the
right place. Attached find a samba driver
that I just cooked up in a few minutes.
Share and enjoy!

HOWTO:
1. make sure your samba client setup is
working. test with
smbclient //your_server/your_printer -c print - /etc/motd
(see below for what software to install to get
this far)

2. Stick the attached interface in /etc/pdq/interfaces
(if you're not root, I suppose there's someplace
else you can put it... I dunno.)

3. Fire up xpdq and choose Printer/add printer.
When you get to the choice of interfaces, choose samba,
then supply //your_server/your_printer

4. print away!

I suppose there are all sorts of ways that it can fail
silently. I hate that, but I'll let the next guy fix
those problems as they arise.

I just tested it using:

server:
 Win98 box
 printer: HP OfficeJet 330

client:

 B.

Change your sources.list to point to testing rather than unstable and
run 'apt-get install package/testing'. This will downgrade the
package. The easiest way to put a package on hold is to run this at
your shell prompt:

echo packagename hold | dpkg --set-selections

This was posted on the debian-user list earlier by:
From: der.hans [EMAIL PROTECTED]
X-Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Later you'll be able to apt-get install these packages when they are
fixed and all will be good and grass will be green again. That's what I
hope for anyways.

I've had the same problem and after searching Debian bugtracking
database it seems that there is a bug in 4.1.0 they forwarded upstream.
What I did was to downgrade xfree86-common and xserver-xfree86 to 4.0.3
leaving all the rest of xfree stuff at 4.1.0. I put those two packages
on hold and so far everything runs smoothly. I think this is the fastest
fix until they fix the 4.1.0 chips module.

Re: matrox g450 and dri

2001-08-11 Thread Oleksandr Moskalenko
  Hi Matthew,

I had exactly the same problem geting dri working on my G400 Dual Head
32Mb. What worked perfectly for me was a suggestion from someone on this
list! I copied their suggestions below. If you follow them you should
get everything working just fine. Remember though that you have to copy
your newly compiled mga.o to
/lib/modules/2.4.7/kernel/drivers/char/drm/
exit X, rmmod mga, modprobe the new mga and startx again. I'm pretty
sure it'll work for you and you won't have to downgrade to 4.0.3 or do
anything drastic. Moreover, mga_drv.o and mga_hal_drv.o from Matrox will
still work. The version mismatch is with the kernel driver mga.o from
what I could gather. Enjoy.

Alex.

Try the source at dri.sourceforge.net. It works for me. I did the
following
1. d/l matrox mga_drv.o and mga_hal.o from matrox site
2. copy them to the appropriate x11 directory
3. d/l the dri from dri.sourceforge.net
4. compile the mga.o by make -f Makefile mga.o
5. cp mga.o to the appropriate /lib/modules/...
6. make sure you have X4.1.0

you should have dri acceleration now

I'm trying to get DRI to work with my new Matrox Millenium g450. It's the
dual head, 32 MB ram version. I only have one monitor, so I really don't
 need the second head :)

 Anyway, here's my setup:

Debian v2.2 (potato), but with the XFree86 4.1.0 binaries installed from
 people.debian.org/~cpbotha/. I'm running a self-compiled kernel version
 2.4.7.

Here are the things I've done:

I replaced /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/mga_drv.o with the file of the
same name from Matrox's website. I also dropped in the file names
 mga_hal_drv.o from the Matrox site.

I compiled my kernel with support for agpgart and the corresponding mga.o
module. I verified that both agpgart.o and mga.o were loaded with lsmod.

At this point, DRI still doesn't work. My /var/log/XFree86.0.log file
reports (II) MGA(0): direct rendering disabled.

So then I did a bit of research (over at dri.sourceforge.net). I
downloaded the replacement kernel modules (drm), compiled them and
installed them (these kernel modules are available at
 www.xfree86.org/~alahn).

Still the problem persists. The most suspect line my
 /var/log/XFree86.0.log file is this one:

(EE) MGA(0): [drm] MGADRIScreenInit failed (DRI version = 4.0.0, expected
 3.0.x). Disabling DRI.

Since I'm not really sure how all these pieces fit together, I'm not sure
what file needs to be upgraded (or downgraded?).

Thanks for any help you might have!

XFree86-4.1.0-2 broke X on my laptop

2001-08-07 Thread Oleksandr Moskalenko
  Hello,

I hope someone will have a clue because I have exhausted my resources.
I've been running XFree86 4.0.x happily on my Toshiba Protege 660CDT.
However, since last week's upgrade to 4.1.0 I can't use X anymore. It
just segfaults in the middle of what appears to be a normal load. This
is the log file. Please help me figure it out. I haven't changed

Matrox G400 dri woes

2001-08-03 Thread Oleksandr Moskalenko
  Hi,

I'm having no end of trouble trying to get dri work on my dual-head
Matrox G400 32Mb. The xfree86 in question is newly appearing in unstable
4.1.0.
If I try to run X with the mga_drv.o that comes with XFree86 or the one
from Matrox website I get this error:
[dri] mga.o kernel module version is 2.0.1 but version 3.0.x is needed.

If I compile the 4.1.0 driver according to this hint:
-
The version included with 2.4.5 is a 2.0.x-series mga.o. You need to
build 3.0.x from the
xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/linux/drm/kernel directory
included in the XFree86 source.

--
Adam Sampson [EMAIL PROTECTED] URL:http://azz.us-lot.org/
-

then insmod mga.o and try to run X I get this error:

(II) LoadModule: mga
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/mga.o
Not loading .fixup
Not loading .rel.fixup

(II) UnloadModule: mga

At this point I am as confused as I could be. What can I do to get dri?

I'm attaching my XF86Config-4 to this message as well.
I tried searching for these errors on the web to no avail. Please help.

 Alex.

Re: X 4.0.3 and agpgart

2001-07-19 Thread Oleksandr Moskalenko
I'm running Matrox G400 on an Intel BX440 motherboard. This is what I
have enabled in the kernel (2.4.6) to get through the part Jim is
talking about:

CONFIG_AGP=y
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=y

As Sean noted depending on the chipset Jim may have to enable one of
the following:

# CONFIG_AGP_I810 is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_VIA is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_AMD is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_SIS is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_ALI is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_SWORKS is not set
CONFIG_DRM=y
# CONFIG_DRM_TDFX is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_GAMMA is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_R128 is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_RADEON is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_I810 is not set
CONFIG_DRM_MGA=m

This is a snippet from my .config that also enables DRM and MGA driver
for Matrox. Also it seems to be a good idea to enable AGP 2 in the XFree
4.0.3. It sped up the loading time of Gnome considerably subjective to
my perception.
It is strange, but acceleration works really inconsistently in my case.
Mesa3D screensavers run beautifully, but I could not get Quake III to
run at all, it would segfault the XFree86.

out, but all seems basically well at this point.

There's one glitch, though, that I'm still trying to resolve. I have a
Matrox G400 card and I'm using the mga driver.

In the XFree86 log, I get this:

  (II) MGA(0): [drm] bpp: 16 depth: 16
  (II) MGA(0): [drm] Sarea 2196+632: 2828

  agpgart module to function correctly
Jul 18 12:19:17 toraigh kernel: Please load the agpgart module before
  you load the mga module

So mga_drm requires the agpgart kernel module. I have this module in:
  /lib/modules/2.4.5/kernel/drivers/char/agp/

  The device file exists:

   crw-rw1 root video 10, 175 Jul 18 12:22 agpgart

But all attempts to load the module fail, with this on the
  command-line:

   init_module: No such device

  and this in sys.log:

kernel: Linux agpgart interface v0.99 (c) Jeff Hartmann
kernel: agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 94M
   kernel: agpgart: unsupported bridge
kernel: agpgart: no supported devices found.

  lspci shows:

00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc.: Unknown device 0391 (rev 02)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc.: Unknown device 8391
00:07.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 [Apollo Super] (rev 22)

  So I tried:

   modprobe agpgart agp_try_unsupported=1

but got the same error messages. Anyone know of a way forward? Thanks,

Sounds like you have the agpgart module, but no support for your
controller. When you enabled agpgart, you would have needed to
specify the type of agp controller you have (probably VIA in your
 case).

Then again, you may have an unsupported chipset, what motherboard do
 you have?

 Cheers,
 Sean

Re: Xine(.deb) DVD Playback

 Hi,

I have been using xine + libcss + xine_libcss_plugin to play dvds. The
quality of playback wasn't too great compared to previous setups (about 4
months ago) so i tried to install the .deb version of xine, and in the
 process upgrade to testing.

But once installed I've seen that there is no support for dvd playback in the
debian version (e.g. no dvd button). Is this on purpose for legal reasons?
And would have changing to the .deb format actually have improved the
 playback?

 Thanks,

 Hereward

  Hereward,

  apt-get xine-dvd

should help you. However, this will only let you play unencrypted DVDs.
To play the encrypted ones you'll have to get, compile and install both
libcss and one of two good plug-ins for xine. At least that's what I did
few days ago after reading http://xine.cjb.net/ and a really great article on
http://www.linux.com/newsitem.phtml?sid=1aid=11799

Re: From IDE ATAPI cdrom to scsi simulation : trouble - help

I know that the symbolic links for devices must point to

 unable to make it right.
My settings (regarding CDROM devices) after booting with
 the new image are
 scsi 0 channel 0 id 0 lun 0
 scsi 0 channel 0 id 1 lun 0
 corresponding to cdrom and cdwriter.
 I did:
rm /dev/cdrom; /dev/MAKEDEV --update and some other
 ln -s that didn't work.
Help is needed as to what to do, in order to make the
 devices visible again.
 Thanks,

Just curious. As per CD-Writing How-To after compiling generic scsi,
scsi cdrom and ide cdrom as modules, etc, it calls for linking /dev/cdrom to
/dev/scd0. Then there are /dev/srx links to /dev/scdx, so you may
link /dev/cdrom to those.

 My 2 cents.

 If you're brave enough, try apt-get install mozilla-cvs. I
 believe it's on a non-us server. I got it yesterday, the 10th,
and it was version 0.9.2+. It was also dated 071001 (the same
 day). That's CVS for you...

Admittedly, it crashed in the short time I was using it.

Worked beautifully for me and I could even finally access my credit
union's site for my banking. Go mozilla-cvs!

Handheld scanner/OCR Shop questions

2001-07-04 Thread Oleksandr Moskalenko
  Hello everybody,

I've considered buying a hand-held scanner that I could use for quick
text scans of journal article abstracts. However, after looking around
the Web (Google mainly + sane website) I still have my doubts as to
which one would present a good price/usability ratio. Please share your
own positive/negative experiences on this matter if you would be so kind.
I really hope to find one that I could plug into a parallel port of my
Debian laptop and have it reliably scan in the text I need. I'm thinking
of purchasing vividata's OCR Shop software to do the text recognition.
Does anybody have any experience with installing it under Debian?

  Thanks,

Alex.

I have no complaints about my Matrix G400 32Mb Dual-head. However,
it is a nuisance that I can't get DVD out to TV on the second head.
Maybe Matrix drivers will support this under Linux soon.

Gnucash 1.6 dependency bug

2001-06-15 Thread Oleksandr Moskalenko
  Hello,

I just tried installing gnucash 1.6 from unstable and found out that
it depends on libgwrapguile0 whereas there is only libgwrapguile1 in the
distribution. It leaves me confused and wondering as what could be done
to remedie this problem.

You should file a bug against the gnucash package, using the 'bug' or
'reportbug' commands. Complaining to debian-user won't necessarily
get the problem solved; many developers don't read debian-user, for
example. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, you could get
the source for the package, figure out how to fix the bug, and include
a patch with your bug report.

I am not in the position to be able to figure out how to fix this
package, yet, so I just installed and used reportbug.

  Thanks,

 Alex.

 Can't locate Debconf/Client/ConfModule.pm in @INC (@INC contains:
 /usr/local/lib/perl/5.6.0 /usr/local/share/perl/5.6.0

Same thing happened during the last (today) dist-upgrade on my
testing/unstable machine to the latest testing. I fixed it by doing an
apt-get install libpaperg from unstable, which automatically installed
new debconf, too and the problem went away.

  Hi, Richard,

I just tried to install and get wine running for the first time and
though it still doesn't run :-( I got the config issue that you seem
to be having, too, figured out. In the wine manual somewhere they
mention old and new config format. You can get your old wine.conf
converted to the new format by copying it to ~/.winerc
After doing that start wine and it will convert the config which you'll
be able to copy to ~/.wine/config
