Leibniz' "best of all possible worlds" ...

2021-10-24 Thread Ricardo C. Lopez
On 10/24/21, Bret Busby wrote:

Well yes, what I had in mind wasn't exactly kosher, but in a sense I
wasn't hacking their rear ends or messing with their computers in a
way that would actually alter their own setup. I was "just" using
their RAM and processor's ticks (to put it somehow), so, as I
understand things, all they would have to do is remove the
virtualization software to have their thing exactly as they had given
it to me and yes, I was a bit lazy. I was trying to avoid using,
minding another computer ...

Also I wanted to leave their computer on with email and such related
business ... while still being able to multitask (which I do quite
naturally, even unconsciously) from another virtualized view. At the
end of the day I would have removed my USB micro drive and we would be
all happy. Something in me tells me this should be technically
possible.

> I also wonder how Leibniz is relevant to this scenario ...

and I wonder if you clinically lack some sense of humor or probably
your thoughts and jokes are flying too high and fast for me to follow
them:

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best_of_all_possible_worlds

 https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/leibniz-evil/

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candide

In my way of interpreting his philosophy. He wasn't really talking
about "evil"/"good", "optimism"/"pessimism" ... to see that you must
understand his "God" in a "characteristica universalis" kind of way,
but then again this might be off topic here in a computer related
group or maybe it is very much topical, who knows.

Re: Leibniz' "best of all possible worlds" ...

2021-10-24 Thread Ricardo C. Lopez
Well, I see too many "possible" problems of technical and political
nature. Perhaps I was too hopeful and/or Voltaire is still as right as
ever, but I was hoping for "yeah, sure!", "here is a link showing how
to do it ..." kinds of answers.

 Here is plan B:
 * I may have to use an extra laptop (perhaps with Debian installed,
or, preferably)
 * still with an external DVD (I would like to be sure on a physical
level that my baseline hasn't been messed with and I don't want to
waste too much time checking it)
 * connect that extra laptop to their laptop to gain internet access
via a direct cable connection
 or:
 * use a relatively large USB with a special init configuration to use
a RAM disk and/or an extra disk and discard -absolutely- everything
that may have been installed or dropped in my files and folders while
I was connected to the Internet

is there a Debian derivative conceived around such basic ideas?

Leibniz' "best of all possible worlds" ...

2021-10-24 Thread Ricardo C. Lopez
Use case: At work (a school) they use Windows 10 and IT is kind of
fundamentalist about it. So I am thinking of "just" using the RAM and
the processor in their machine. I am thinking of:
 * running Debian Live from an external USB attached DVD player
 * via Qemu, which, of course, I will have to install and for which I
may need admin rights, and
 * attached an external pan and/or microdrive with whatever code I
need for my business.

Is such an environment possible? What kinds of technical problems do
you foresee with such setup?, probably with the BIOS? Any tips you
would share or any other way of doing such thing (I don't like to use
Windows, but at work you must use it)?

Thank you,

gpg finds no secret key when logging remotely after upgrade to stretch

2017-07-11 Thread Ricardo Yanez
My gpg key works just fine in a gnome-terminal when I'm logged in via
the gnome display manager. New in stretch is that gnome now pops a
windows for me to give the passphrase, which is really nice, but not so
good if I'm remotely logged-in via SSH. Then I get the disturbing error,

gpg: public key decryption failed: Operation cancelled
gpg: decryption failed: No secret key

It turns out, when I'm still logged-in via the display manager, the
passphrase prompt pops up locally. I have to force-logout gnome and kill
gpg-agent to be able to run gpg remotely, and even so, the gpg-agent
pops a sort of text window. It seems the terminal emulator cannot tell
the difference.

Is there a way to instruct gpg to request the passphrase in the
old-fashioned way, in the terminal, when logged-in remotely via SSH?

Thanks,
Ricardo

Display resolution.

2016-01-04 Thread Ricardo M.A.
Hi. Thanks for Debian. Really. Thanks a lot.

I am using Debian Stretch.
My computer is a Toshiba Satellite L755D-S5204, AMDA6 with an Ati-Raedon
HD6520G. I use an additional display, a LG Flatron M2241A.
Since Stretch do not recommend to install the catalyst drivers directly
downloaded from ATI (I only got a frozen system AND a no-graphics-only-text
Debian Stretch . . . . I am using the AMD/ATI drivers from the non-free
debian stretch respositories.

In an update fron the last week, something stopped working. Debian no
longer recognize the model and the resolution of the external display in
automatic.
The only resolutions recognized were the three traditional resolutions for
VGA. The highest 1024x768.

I have searched in Google and read the manuals (cvt, xrand, xorg.conf, and
others), I also searched for info in Xorg... And found a workaround with
""cvt"" and ""xrand --newmode"" / ""xrand --addmode"" / and ""xrand
--output"", so I can manually get the correct display resolution back to
work... although I must type those again each time I turn on the computer.

But, that was working automatically.

I am learning (low to medium, nearer to low, linux/debian user), and
willing to learn.
I want to get this working again.
¿What else do you recommend to check?
¿Any page you can offer to read more?
¿Or this is something to be fixed in a later update of Debian Stretch?
(Anyway I would like to find a little more by myself, even if I could not
fix it).

Thanks for reading.
And if anyone help me, I will REALLY thank that also.

Ricardo M.A.

Alerta tributário: aos profissionais liberais e autônomos

NUNCA "COMPRE" NOTA FISCAL

Blurry X11 fonts in Lenny after update

2008-01-04 Thread Ricardo Yanez

I recently updated my laptop running lenny and the X11 fonts became
blurry, kind of clumsy looking. The GNOME appearence preferences do
nothing. I use XOrg, the standard 100dpi xfonts, ATI Radeon card with
the fglrx driver, just stardard stuff. I installed xfs to see if it
helps, but not.

This is the second time I encounter this problem. The last time was when
upgrading from Ubuntu Breezy to Dapper. I could never solve the problem,
and after much cursing I went back to sarge. Few seem to have seen this
problem, and it's perhaps related to the graphics card, but it's
certainly related to a xserver-xorg update in lenny. I saw this problem
right after the update and reboot.

Has anybody seen this? Any suggestions?

Cheers,
Ricardo

Because gnome was upgraded and the default font on the new version is
10. Preferences -> Appearance -> Fonts, and set your defaults to 12.

Well, if I do that the fonts are huge, then I have to decrease the
resolution, to about 65 dpi to get them to a sensible size, but again,
nothing really improves.

Gnome doesn´t start with Sarge r3

Dear friends:

I  had one Debian Sarge (3.1) r2 installed on a Compaq Deskpro EP

Sarge using r3 CD´s instead of the original r2 CD´s. Surprisingly, the
Gnome environment did not start when the installation was finished and the

I  made another installation of the Sarge r2, and the Gnome
environment just started normally.
Again, I  made other installation of the Sarge r3, and again, the
Gnome environment did not start.
I  repeated this experience for more four times, alternating
the installation of r2 and r3, using the exactly same installation options for
both. The results were the
same.  Gnome did not start with r3 although the desktop environment

incompatibility betwen libc6 and initrd-tools

2006-07-30 Thread Ricardo Buzzo
Hello,

I am trying to install the subtitle editor gaupol, that depends of python-gth2, that depends therefore the package libc6 (>=
2.3.5-1). The problem is that when I try to install libc6 (# dpkg
--install libc6_2.3.6-16_i386.deb) the console returns:

   libc6 conflicts with initrd-tools (<< 0.1.84.1)

   initrd-tools (version 0.1.81.1) is instaled.

   dpkg: error processing libc6_2.3.6-16_i386.deb (--install):

conflict packages - libc6 not instaled
(my sistem is in portuguese, so I translated all that message sistems, please ignore any problem)

My problem is that I can't uninstall initrd-tools without uninstall the
kernel-image too, what seems to me a big problem. When I configure the
synaptic to the unstable packages, it marks a lot of non-sense
modifications on the system (including the uninstall of the kernel and
the armagetron!). Anybody nows what's the problem? I've seen a lot of
mails in the list about the conflict involving libc6 and other
packages, but not with the kernel, and no solution pointed that solved
my problem. In betwen, anybody nows another subtitle editor easier to
install?

Regards,

Ricardo.

fglrx and line in mouse pointer

Hi,

Im using the default kernel in the debian sid repositories, version
2.6.14-1-686.

It is working fine in 2.6.12-686.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
An elegant (I think) way of solving this is to
put scripts in /etc/ppp/ip-[up|down].d/ to stop
and start ntpd when pppd reconnects.

My /etc/ppp/ip-down.d/ntp-server simply says,

-
#!/bin/sh

[ -x /usr/sbin/ntpd ] || exit 0

echo "Stopping NTP server"
/etc/init.d/ntp-server stop
-

and my /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/ntp-server,

-
#!/bin/sh

[ -x /usr/sbin/ntpd ] || exit 0

echo "Starting NTP server"
/etc/init.d/ntp-server start
-

Just make sure these scrips are executable (755).

Re: Equivs - APT - Source - Packages

2004-03-08 Thread Ricardo Lima

Hi,
I have already solved my problem.
I am going to try to explain what I did.

1 - Downloaded, compiled and installed xfree86 4.4.0
2 - Discovered all the packages .deb made from xfree86 sources ->
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/x/xfree86/
3 - With grep and a script, I created automatically one file for each
deb package (equivalent to do lots of times: equivs-control name):
--
   Section: x11
   Priority: optional
   Standards-Version: 4.4.0
   Package: xlibs
   Version: 4.4.0
   Maintainer: XX <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
   Provides: xlibs
--
to be used with equivs.
4 - I created a script that for all packages made
equivs-build name
and then :
dpkg -i name_4.4.0_all.deb

After this I could install xemacs21 with apt-get install, without having
any problems with dependencies. Note that apt-get did not install the
packages related with xfree86.

Therefore, I installed the sources of the xfree86 4.4.0 and "told" to
apt that all packages related with xfree86 were installed.

Equivs - APT - Source - Packages

2004-03-08 Thread Ricardo Lima

Hi,
I am trying to install the xfree86 4.4.0 from sources in a debian
testing machine running kernel 2.6.3.
I was able to compile xfree86 and install it.
Now I would like to use equivs to tell apt that xfree86 4.4.0 is
installed.
I have already tested equivs with xfree86-common and it is working (apt
knows that it is installed).
Now the questions:

1 - How can I know all the packages that the sources of xfree86 4.4.0
provide?
I know that with apt-cache search show, I can get the information
about the source of a package.
2 - Right now I can tell apt (with equivs) that a package is installed,
BUT can I use only one file to specify that several packages are
installed? How?

FW: STOCK MARKET ALERT: PDPR Announces Increased Revenues

2004-01-25 Thread Ricardo Knowles
OTC FIRST ALERT - New Public Company of the Month

Symbol: PDPR
Market: PK
Sector: Infant-Pediatric Prosthetics

BREAKING NEWS: LAKE HARMONY, PA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- Dec. 01, 2003 --
IOCircuit.com Announces Increased Revenue PDPR. Pediatric Prosthetics, Inc.
has recently recruited one of the finest Pediatric Orthotists in the
country.

BREAKING NEWS: LAKE HARMONY, PA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- Nov. 26, 2003 --
TheNewsWire.com Reiterates PDPR with a Buy Rating and announces that
Pediatric Prosthetics, Inc. is continuing its efforts to recruit new
prosthetists.

Jim Furey of Lehman Brothers says, "You want to own small stocks versus
large stocks when economic growth is accelerating, which is exactly the
period we're in now. "

PDPR's a small NEW company that's developed a strong niche in the
Infant-Pediatric Prosthetics segment, estimated at over $100 million
annually.

The national prosthetics market is estimated at nearly $2 billion annually
and is extremely fragmented. PDPR's infant segment of this market, ages 0
to 14 comprise of 5% or $100 million of the total $2 billion national
prosthetic market.

PDPR developed its strong hold on this segment by focusing only on the
infant-pediatric prosthetics segment.

In its segment, PDPR hopes to repeat the success Hanger, Inc. Hanger, Inc
currently trades on the NYSE under "HGR", has a market cap of approx. $366
million and trades at around $18.

INFANT-PEDIATRIC PROSTHETICS MARKET

Children ages 0 to 14 comprise of 5%, or $100 million, of the total $2
billion national prosthetic market. The vast majority of this 5% pediatric
prosthetic market derives from babies born with a limb loss.

There are approximately 145,000 first time amputations each year. Of these
145,000 first time amputations, less than 1% or approximately 1,000 babies
are born with a limb loss.

PDPR's the only infant-pediatric prosthetics company focusing on these
unique needs

MARKET POTENTIAL

Focusing on this infant-pediatric need allows PDPR to generate a consistent
revenue stream from childhood to adulthood. This "annuity effect" should
compound earnings year after year and enable PDPR to enjoy stable growth.

The cost from infancy to adulthood is anticipated to be over $200,000 for a
below elbow amputee. Adults will spend an additional $200,000 on their
artificial arms. Revenue growth is directly correlated with the physical
growth of the children.

PDPR MANAGEMENT TEAM

The management team of PDPR is nationally recognized as the leading
prosthetists in the infant-pediatric prosthetics field. PDRP's management's
been featured in, "Orthotics & Prosthetics Business News", written up in
"Life Magazine", and some of the fitted children have appeared on national
TV shows, including "Good Morning America", "Maury Povich", "Phil Donahue",
and "20-20".

FINAL CONSIDERATIONS

The last time information was disseminated on PDPR it increased to $0.45.

PDPR developed a strong niche in the nearly $2 billion a year industry by
addressing the specialized $100 million infant-pediatric need.

PDPR is the only company specializing in the national needs of the
Infant-Pediatric Prosthetics segment.

Focusing on its niche in the infant-pediatric segment, allows PDPR to
generate a consistent revenue stream from childhood to adulthood. This
"annuity effect" should compound earnings year after year and enable PDPR to
enjoy stable growth.

Debian GNU/Linux 2.1 Unleashed... Now here's a great book. Altough it's
based on slink (don't look there if you want to configure Xfree 4.2), it
has the fundaments. If you want to learn dpkg, apt-get, understand the
boot process, or even some basic linux commands, this is it.

Eterm and mouse

2002-11-20 Thread Ricardo Diz
Hi all,

This maybe a litle off topic but, since I'm running debian and this is
The mailing list for debian users... Anyway, feel free to flame me (once
is enough though :) ).

As I wrote in the subject, I usually use Eterm to acess mutt, epic, vim, bash shell,...
The problem is that if I happen to a weblink in a mail for instance, I
can't use urlview to open mozilla (I can do it with gnome-terminal
though). I can't use the mouse buttons to do anything at all, and
everytime I join a channel in irc using epic (this works with
gnome-terminal) my cool tranparent Eterm background changes to black!!

Does anyone knows how do I fix this?

Thanks in advance

I've been following this thread and, since I haven't 'played' with this
before, I just ran a 'hdparm -tT /dev/hda5 >hdparm' so I can compare my values
with those shown here. My results are in the attach.

I was very suprised to see that, even that for buffer-cache I got 130.61
MB/sec, I got 2.10 MB/sec for buffered disk!!!

Any ideas?

P.S. Does anyone knows how do I put a result from command line into

RE: Repeated keys in X

2002-10-14 Thread Ricardo Diz

Hi,

I'm running gnome2 on top of Xfree86 4.2.1.

The repeat settings in accessibility are off and I tried those xkbset
commands but that was no good...

I saw a webpage that had an altered XF86Config-4 for that but I lost it.

I used some commands to see the keycodes when I press them and they seem
fine.

If you use gnome2 have a look at the accessibility setings.
Otherwise have a look at the xkbset command:

xkbset bouncekeys 80
xkbset exp =bouncekeys

ADSL using pppoe & pppoeconfig

2002-10-04 Thread Ricardo Diz

Hi there,

I'm now a proud owner of a ADSL net connection. There is only one
problem. I can't make it to work under linux.

I've installed the lastest pppoe and pppoeconfig (I'm running unstable)
and it all promised to be quite simple. I used pppoeconfig for setting
things up and it seemed to work fine until it started the connection.
Here is the log:

Oct  4 17:29:02 (none) pppd[1074]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/0
Oct 4 17:29:02 (none) pppd[1074]: not replacing existing default route
to eth0 [193.136.238.1]
Oct 4 17:29:02 (none) pppd[1074]: Cannot determine ethernet address for
proxy ARP
Oct 4 17:29:02 (none) pppd[1074]: local IP address 213.13.230.110
Oct 4 17:29:02 (none) pppd[1074]: remote IP address 213.13.200.1
Oct 4 17:29:02 (none) pppd[1074]: primary DNS address 194.65.5.2
Oct 4 17:29:02 (none) pppd[1074]: secondary DNS address 194.65.3.21

So it appears to be connected since I'm assigned a IP, but I can't ping
nothing but the remote address (or my own, of course).

There are in fact 3 things that amazed me: In the first line I was
expecting eth0 instead of pts/0; I don't know why the second line
appear; the third line looks really bad.

"ipconfig" shows that the packets I sent don't go from eth0 to ppp0...

"route -n" seems normal

Any advices?

Regards,
Ricardo Diz

Hi to all,

security to prevent that but I don't know much about the subject, where can
I find some info to develop a good firewall or sendmail rules to prevent

Any suggestions from experienced users are welcomed, now I have sendmail,

downloading everything and start configuring it locks and keeps

shows nothing, just returns to the prompt. Is there a way to know if
anything is actually configured, or what else I can do ?

Hehe 'domain.com' means mydomain.com which is ermitagemontevideo.com
too big too write ;) that's the one I have registered.
I just use the other as an example.

Re: DNS questions

2002-04-09 Thread Ricardo Fitzgerald
>
Hi Elizabeth,

Thank you for your help and for replying. My 'domain.com' is a
registered domain (INTERNIC), and it's registered under
200.61.76.88, my primary nameserver is also registered as
ns.domain.com.

I'm still confused regarding what what to put in my reverse zone
files, because I'm not sure if I have to use the zone 200.61.76 and
add PTRs to 200.61.76.88 and 200.61.76.65 or 200.61.76.88 and just add
a pointer to 200.61.76.88. Also with the domain.com zone file I'm not
sure if this is correct : " NS ns
MX 10 mail

ns A 200.61.76.88
  MX 10 mail
deb CNAME ns
www CNAME ns
ftpCNAMEns
mail CNAMEns"

or

I have to do this instead
" NS ns
   MX10 mail

ns A 200.61.76.88
  MX 10 mail
www CNAME ns
ftpCNAMEns
mail CNAMEns"

deb A 192.168.0.1
  MX 10 mail
"
deb is the linux gw with 2 eth interfaces and 2 ip addresses

The conclusion is my 'domain.com' is not resolving properly so I'm
trying to find out what I did wrong.

Rick

DNS questions

2002-04-09 Thread Ricardo Fitzgerald
Hi,

I'm fairly new to DNS bind, and such and I'm having troubles
configuring a nameserver and the zones.
ok, here is what I have a network of 5 machines Windoze crap mix and a
Linux gateway with a static ip, the internal machines have normal
192.168.0.x addresses and the Linux gw has 2 ip one is 192.168.0.1 to
the internal network, and the other 200.61.76.88 (is the static) is to
the internet, and is connected to a router with address 200.61.76.65
which belongs to the ISP.
My questions are:
How many zones do I need ?
I mean I did 127.0.0, 192.168.0, 200.61.76.88 and the domain.com, but
I'm not sure if I had to do 200.61.76 instead of 200.61.76.88, and in
if I have to include the router's address somewhere.

If I'm going to make CNAME for www, mail, ftp, etc, do I have to use
192.168.0.1 or the other ? In the case of www looks clear I have to do
it, but for the others I'm confused, not so sure.

My linux gw is called Deb, it has 2 eth ports, can I use
deb.domain,com with both ip addresses , 192.168.0.1 and 200.61.76.88 ?

I've already configured it following the DNS-Howto but it's not
working properly.

Thanks, and have a nice day.

Regards,

Rick

2002-04-08 Thread Ricardo Fitzgerald
Hi,

Thank you to all of you who helped, I've finally switch to another
kernel, and been able to boot normally (my distro is Debian PPC apus)
It doesn't use lilo it uses a bootstrap and a kernel-image, switching
kernels is just booting with another kernel image.

I've still have problems with XFree86-4.1 recognizing my card, I'm not
sure how to use fbdev as the device, and not my card chip's driver a
Virge/DX 's3virge' didn't work.

So I still don't have X, this weird because I had it working when I
used potato and now it doesn't find my card.

Anyway thank you again for your tips.

dpkg and apt questions :)

2001-10-20 Thread Ricardo Diz
Hi all,

This might have an obvious answer, but I couldn't figure it out myself.
Is there an easy way to see the changelog of a new package without installing
it on my system? The purpose of this is to know if I'm interested on upgrading
the package or not.

BTW, I know I can put a package on hold using dpkg --force-hold, but I do not
know how (or if it is possible) to see which packages are on hold and how to
remove the hold option.

Thanks in advance,

OK: just compiled bypassing xconfig: worked fine!!! It seems that there were
some
configuration variables (marked NEW in make config) that were not set in the
old kernel
configuration file, and xconfig assumed as set to Y. Thats why the new kernel
was 30k
bigger...

Thanks a lot again!!!

The old kernel reports gcc 2.7.2.3 at boot time. So do the new one. The boot
failure
happens at the "Partition check" in hda. It reports as follows:

Partition check:
 hda: timeout waiting for DMA
 hda: irq timeout: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }

The two last lines repeats twice or three times after a litlle delay, and the
boot
process just continues, as if nothing hapened. But everything goes wrong from
here on
(can't mount device for rw, and the timeout message periodically blinks on the
screen,
even after logon. Didn't go any further).

The funny thing is that I have to turn off the machine (just pressing reset
doesn't
work), or the old kernel won't boot also(!).

'Seems my IDE is an "ALI15x3 not 100% native mode (will probe irq's later)". If
I compile
a kernel with the specific (experimental) driver things works fine. But the old
kernel
also does work fine, and it's not compiled with the experimental driver!!!

What is happening?

Thanks

P.S. Checked the differences between files /boot/System.map-2.2.19foo17 and
/boot/System.map-2.2.19pre17 and they do differ, although I don't know the
meaning of the
differences. Gonna try to compile it using the config file withaout the xconfig
to see
what happens.

I'm a newbie also; when I installed the sources, they weren't unpacked.

bzip2 -dc kernel-sources-2.2.19pre17.tar.bz2 | tar xvf -

should do this for you. Think you don't need the headers...

Yes, I did. In fact, step 1 loaded /boot/config-2.2.19pre17 and saved it in
/usr/src/kernel-source-2.2.19pre17/.config. To be precise, doing this via make
xconfig only adds comment lines to the .config file. I checked it out
carefully

Can't compile an exact copy of kernel image.

2001-10-04 Thread Ricardo Gazoni
I'm a newbie on kernel compiling, and would like to recompile the kernel
on my
machine to remove undesired drives. So, I got
kernel-source-2.2.19pre17.deb,
kernel-package.deb and gcc272_2.7.2.3-15 and followed the instructions:

0 - $ make xconfig
1 - in xconfig, loaded /boot/config-2.2.19pre17; saved and exited
2 - $ make-kpkg clean
3 - changed the Makefile, to make EXTRAVERSION = foo17 (to avoid module
problems)
4 - $ fakeroot make-kpkg --revision=foo.1.0 kernel_image
5 - (as root) # dpkg -i kernel-image-2.2.19foo17_foo.1.0_i386.deb

Everything worked just fine until now. But the old kernel image
(vmlinuz-2.2.19pre17) is 1.001.473 bytes long, and the new one
(vmlinuz-2.2.19foo17) is 1.033.565 bytes long. But the worst thing
is that the new kernle doesn't boot. What am I doing wrong??

Thanks for your attention

Try check the manpage of gnuchess ('man gnuchess'). I had the same problem

I'll answer this one first since it makes more sense.
A deadlock can be defined as blocking stage that processes arrived due to
the fact that they're competing for the same resources.

> 1. When does a deadlock happen on a Unix/Linux system ?

Here an example:
Imagine process A has exclusive access to an I/O resource (e.g. a CD-Rom
drive) and needs access to another I/O resource (e.g a floppy-disk drive)
for copying data from the former resource to the latter.
Now imagine a process B that needs to copy its own data from the first
resource (e.g. the CD-Rom drive) to the second (e.g. the floppy-disk drive),
but in this case, process B grabed the exlusive of the second resource
first.
Now process A is waiting for the access of the second resource and
process B is waiting for the first resource. So they both enter a block
state called deadlock.
To handle deadlock there is no efficient solution, only prevention.

Problem with ncurses when making "make menuconfig"

I can use "make xconfig" in a X environment but I

I tried to reinstall ncurses (ncurses-base,

What power mode is your machine in when it boots? My Toshiba
automagically slows down the CPU when it is on battery power or not set to
"Full
power mode". Since the kernel only checks the CPU speed on boot, it will
report
an incorrect speed until you restart.

Now I want to install Debian 2.2 without erase RedHat.
My question is about lilo. On the installation of RedHat I installed lilo
on the MBR. But my version of lilo is a bit old. So I prefer to use Debian's
lilo. How should I proceed to do this?
I thought in install Debian's lilo on it's partition and live RedHat's
lilo on the MBR, so I would use my old lilo ( I think it wouldn't be so
bad). Maybe I erase RedHat's lilo and install Debian lilo's on the MBR and
configure it's lilo.conf too boot both distro's. If I install two lilos, one
on the MBR and the other on debian's partitions this won't confuse the computer
on the boot? What should I do?
I'd like that you explain it step by step.

   Thanks,

   Hi Christian,

try to open another shell by pressing ALT + F2 and mount the cdrom by
yourself. Just an idea.

Re: Debian + other distribution

Hi debianers,

And how shold I proceed to use the same /boot partition for both
distributions? Should I expand it? Debian 2.2 install it's kernel image on
/boot automatically?
Thanks for those who answerd me.

Debian + other distribution

2000-07-10 Thread Ricardo Gabriel Herdt
  Debianers,

I have a HD 10.2 with win95 at the begin (first 1500MB) and another Linux
dist. on a partition of 3000MB. (The distribution is Conectiva Linux, similar to
RedHat). I want to install Debian 2.2 on another partition without remove
neither win nor my other dist. How should I proceed to do this?
Obs.: My computer has the limit of the 1024 cilinders and I want to know
where is this limits in megabytes and how to deal with this problem if the
Debian partition be created over the 1024 cilinders?
Maybe I'll remove win95 from my computer ( if my family accept). Will
this revolution (yeah!!) help me to install two Linux distributions on the same
HD?
And more, I have a /boot partition of 16MB to boot my Conectiva Linux.
(said that because it can be an important information.)

   Thanks,

Title: Alpha Server Supported

Hi Debian Users,

I need to know what are the Compaq Alphas Servers supported by Debian Linux, and if Compaq Fortran for Linux Compiler run over Debian/Alpha. Thanks in advanced.
