Different sized gnome fonts in KDE
Sorry about starting a new thread but I deleted the mail and now remebered how I fixed this problem. Gnome fonts where using a different dpi than kde was. Under gnome-font-properties there is a details or advanced button, I forget which. Press this and the new dialog will allow you to set the dpi for gnome fonts. I made sure this was the same as I was starting kde with and all was well. Hope this helps, RJP -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? There are no (related) messages in /var/log/syslog. jojda:/home/erik# modprobe -v snd-seq-oss insmod /lib/modules/2.6.5/kernel/sound/core/seq/snd-seq.ko insmod /lib/modules/2.6.5/kernel/sound/core/seq/snd-seq-midi-event.ko insmod /lib/modules/2.6.5/kernel/sound/core/seq/oss/snd-seq-oss.ko and the modprobe does not exit, it just sits there. udev creates devices (see below) but there are not usable, e.g.: jojda:/var/log# sfxload /data/music/soundfont/creative/8MBGMSFX.SF2 /dev/sequencer: No such device I am using 2.6.3 at the moment and while my symptoms are somewhat different I believe the problems are related. Using sfxload for a sound font I would get the /dev/sequencer: No such device message and sometimes the command would just hang. My modules always seemed to load correctly though. I have found a somewhat unsatisfactory solution -- If I boot into my windows partition and use the soundblaster utility to reset to factory defaults all is fine again when booting back into linux. It appears that alsa can occasionally screw up the synth portion of the sound card to the point that even a cold reboot doesn't solve the problem. I have no idea how I would have recovered without a windows partition still hanging around. I may just revert to a 2.4 kernel with low latency patches and a 0.9 alsa -- this combination worked for me for the longest time without any problems. Pluschke I'm no kernel expert here but I've never seen linx swap out things unless it needed to. I suspect you've got a periodic task that wakes up and demands memory. Likely culrpits are cron tasks or a screen saver. If you have enough memory, you can disable the swap file completely and run with just RAM. I've done this on my laptop and it works fine. As a bonus, this may force the culprit process to log an error when it cannot allocate enough memory. Good luck. Charlie. No unusual periodic tasks, don't use a screen saver (just blanking). It appears to be a function of time, if an open program is not used for a while it gets swapped to disk even if no other program is requesting memory. I suppose the kernel is anticipating -- this process hasn't been used for a while, swap it out, be ready for a new process. I would try to run without swap but editing the odd large graphic file requires it. The newer the kernel is the more I notice this. It didn't happen with kernel 0.99 pl 14 :) Thanks R. Mozilla Font Madness
Hi, I'm having a strange problem with mozilla fonts in testing. I have two users on a particular machine. One uses windowmaker and one uses gnome(1.4). The fonts in mozilla for the windowmaker user look relatively good whereas the gnome user's fonts look horrible!! Both users have exactly the same fonts selected in their font preferences in mozilla and both are obviously using the same X configuration (using Xfree's builtin truetype font server). The truetype fonts in other applications (konqueror, gimp etc) work well for both users. I have deleted both users .netscape .mozilla directories and reconfigured both with the same results!! Does mozilla read some settings/preferences from the gnome desktop ?? Has anyone else noticed this ?? xauth or xhost no longer required?
Hi, Since the upgrade of X in testing I have noticed that I don't have to use xhost or xauth to run X programs after I su to root. Is this the way its now supposed to be, or has something been set incorrectly during the upgrade? Thanks in advance RJP -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. The first one will make you root while preserving your environment (including XAUTHORITY), the latter will give you a clean root environment (probably without XAUTHORITY). I just type su return password return which is what I've always done, however I used to have to use xhost or xauth which is now not required. I'm just curious if some major security hole has been opened. What a speedy reply :) P.S. Oops!! X priority warning
Hi, I'm getting the following warning on starting X: X warning: process set to priority 0 instead of the the requested priority -10 I start X using the 'startx' command and while everything works fine messages like this really bug me. How do I get X to start at the proper priority or failing that how do I set the requested priority to 0 ?? Another nitpick -- when exiting X I get the following message: waiting for X server to shut down FreeFontPath: FPE /usr/lib/fonts/misc refcount is 2, should be 1, fixing Does anybody know what this is about and how to correct it?? I am running testing if that matters. Thanks in advance Roy -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
nedit troubles
Hi, I am having problems with 'nedit' behaving strangely lately :( When I open a second file the window created does not accept keyboard or mouse input except for the window manager decorations. Could this be caused by the debian practice of renaming nc to nedit-nc to avoid a name conflict with another package? Is anyone else experiencing this and found a work-around? I am running testing if it matters. Thanks in advance rjplus -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
X depth and truetype font sizes
Hi, Has anyone else noticed that when you change the color depth of XFree86 ie. from 16 to 32 bpp that the truetype font sizes in gnome and KDE apps change? Is there any way to fix this !! When I edit graphics I generally am in 32bpp and the rest of the time in 16bpp as it is faster on my aging hardware. I know I could create different users for different color depths but what a pain to create multiple configurations for all my apps. By the way the msttcorefonts package that was added to testing today(yesterday) is broken -- beware -- . After a apt-get upgrade I lost those fonts and had to add symlinks manually to get them back. [offtopic] esdl
Greetings, I'm trying to compile esdl the erlange binding for the SDL library in order to get wings3d (a 3d modeler to work) to work. It's not a part of the official kernel.org kernel. So you have to build it yourself. There's a debian package though which makes things a bit easier. apt-get install cdfs Be forewarned, cdfs is a bit finicky when it comes to bad disks and the like. It could lock your cdrom drive. If by reading the audio cd you mean creating a .wav file from a track then in xmms go to preferences and set your output plugin to disk writer. I hope this helps. ggv in testing
My gnome-gv (testing branch) seems broken after this weekends dist-upgrade!! It renders very slowly - you can see the individual lines being drawn to the screen at sort of like triple reading speed. It also crashes when I change the zoom level with the following message in a pop-up dialog X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 73 (X_GetImage) Serial number of failed request: 34 Current serial number in output stream: 34 The old stand-by gv still works the way it used to so I don't think its the gs packages. Has anyone else noticed this or am I alone ?? Roy Pluschke [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Apache libphp4.so
Hi there, I am having a hard time loading the php4 module into apache. This is a portion of my edited httpd.conf # LoadModule usertrack_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_usertrack.so LoadModule unique_id_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_unique_id.so LoadModule setenvif_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_setenvif.so # LoadModule sys_auth_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_auth_sys.so # LoadModule put_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_put.so # LoadModule throttle_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_throttle.so # LoadModule allowdev_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_allowdev.so # LoadModule eaccess_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_eaccess.so LoadModule php4_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp4.so # LoadModule roaming_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_roaming.so I have confirmed that libphp4.so exists in this location however, when I run apacheconfig, part of the output looks like this # LoadModule usertrack_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_usertrack.so LoadModule unique_id_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_unique_id.so LoadModule setenvif_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_setenvif.so # LoadModule sys_auth_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_auth_sys.so # LoadModule put_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_put.so # LoadModule throttle_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_throttle.so # LoadModule allowdev_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_allowdev.so # LoadModule eaccess_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_eaccess.so # LoadModule php4_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp4.so # LoadModule roaming_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_roaming.so Pondering done. Save these changes to the configuration files? [Y/n] The libphp4.so is again commented out !! Where is apacheconfig reading the above from if not httpd.conf ?? I have tried apacheconfig --update and the apacheconfig --force-modules options and attempted loading the modules in various orders all without success. What am I doing wrong ?? p.s. access.conf and srm.conf are empty Thanks in advance, Roy Pluschke [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
