Re: dist-upgrade
Edit your /etc/apt/sources.list file. It should contain lots of lines. Edit one of the lines starting with deb, and instead of the word stable/potato, type testing. Save the file. Then do at the command prompt, 'apt-get update'. That will update your packages list to the latest from the ftp or http server. Then do 'apt-get dist-upgrade'. Re: Bad DIMM? Need testing advice
I too have got a problem that's bugging me sometime now. Whenever I try to compile a kernel, or uncompress some big file, arbitrary characters get inserted in some files, leading to parse errors. For example, If I start compiling a kernel, it ends with a parse error. I check out, and find a ' or J inserted somewhere. I remove it, start compiling again, only to find another ' or J somewhere else. Another example: If I try to do a apt-get install , then, a parse error in /var/lib/dpkg/status or /var/lib/dpkg/available occurs. Somewhere ' or J gets inserted, leading to parse error. I remove them, only to find them somewhere else. Now, I have got a cron job running every midnight to back up those two critical files. IF those errors occur, I just replace them with the backups. Now, what's the problem? Is it hardware problem? I think so. If it is, whom should i suspect - hdd/memory/cpu/cache/cables/ide whatever? I have discussed this in different mailing lists, but in vain. Somebody help me. It's a long time since I compiled kernels. :-( Once upon a time, Roderick Cummings <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> found a keyboard. And typed: > > > with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? English of course, and the German &*)(&**^ thing has obviously frustrated you as well as many of the listers. Now it's fixed, and everybody is :-). The moral is, when there is something in the line of spam, it's better to remain silent, and let the thing die down (it will, soon). Else, by commenting on it, we are just adding more to it. How to upgrade?
Currently, I am in potato. If I want to upgrade the whole system to woody or r3, WHat should i put in my sources.list file? and what options should I give to apt-get? Also, is woody and 2.2r3 both same? Or, if different, please briefly explain. -- Regards, ``` (0-0) o00--(_)--00o- V.Suresh [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www16.brinkster.com/vsuresh .ooo0 0ooo. ---( )-( ) \ ( ) / Powered by DEBIAN \_) (_/ 2:06pm up 28 min, 5 users, load average: 0.00, 0.15, 0.36
exim
I am a dialup user. Sometimes, even after connecting to my ISP, exim doesn't deliver the queued mails. I even tried runq, but still the messages are deferred, saying retry time not reached. I had to manually remove those mails under /var/spool/exim/. Why is this happening? When I am connected, if I send a mail, it gets delivered. Re: boot up commands
That's good for perfect modules. What about modules that need forcing, I mean 'insmod -f '. My module has a kernel mismatch, and I have to force insmod it. I think it is not possible with /etc/modules. Once upon a time, Kevin Easton <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> found a keyboard. And typed: > >Hi, > >Just stick the name of the module you want to load at boot time in >/etc/modules. > >- Kevin. > >- Original Message - >From: "V.Suresh" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >To: "Debian List" >Sent: Wednesday, April 18, 2001 1:38 AM >Subject: boot up commands > > >> I want a insmod command to beperformed during booting. boot up look and feel
Other distros like Suse/Redhat have a good looking boot up. Each process is started with a colorful "done/ok" message at the right end. Is it possible to make debian do so? May be some hacking is needed, I guess. boot up commands
I want a insmod command to beperformed during booting. In which file should I put it up? SHould I write a new script, and put it in /etc/init.d? startx delay
When firing startx, X comesup, then in 2-3 secs windowmaker pops up, and then it takes a good 10-15 seconds for gnome panel to pop up. The doubt is, there is no disk activity at the interval. Why the delay, and can I speed it up a bit? -- Regards, .---. | V Suresh |ILUG-Madurai Co-ordinator | | Mail - [EMAIL PROTECTED]| | | URL - www16.brinkster.com/vsuresh |[EMAIL PROTECTED]| |---| | Powered by Debian GNU/Linux Potato | --- LINUX IS NOT FOR THE FAINT-HEARTED 9:32pm up 4 min, 3 users, load average: 0.12, 0.21, 0.09
sound?
I changed the permissions, added user to group audio, et al. Now, when I use 'play ' command, the file is played perfectly. But 'mpg123 ' says no sample rate found, and gmix says no mixer found. When i do 'cat > /dev/dsp or /dev/audio', the speakers give a "korr" sound and nothing more. THe thing is, wav files play with 'play' command, while mp3 files couldn't be played. Help. Another query: When I startx, X comes up, then after a few seconds window maker comes up, then after several seconds of no disk activity, gnome panel pops up. Why is it that gnome is taking so much time? -- Regards, .---. | V Suresh |ILUG-Madurai Co-ordinator | | Mail - [EMAIL PROTECTED]| | | URL - www16.brinkster.com/vsuresh |[EMAIL PROTECTED]| |---| | Powered by Debian GNU/Linux Potato | --- LINUX IS NOT FOR THE FAINT-HEARTED 9:55pm up 27 min, 4 users, load average: 0.99, 0.97, 0.79
exim?
I am a dialup internet user. While I was using SuSE, i had complete control over sendmail. I used to run 'sendmail -q -v' to see the mails being sent to my isp's server using smarthost. Now, with exim, I run 'runq -v', and all exim says is a pid number, and exits. How do I make exim more verbose, and I want to actually see the mail transfer over my console. sound ?
After a long struggle for a month, I finally managed to get X up under Debian. I have a i810 m/b. Now a problem: Sound isn't working. mpg123, gmp3 say mixer can't be opened.
