Problems with Testing Install
Dear List - In the installation, at the end of the screen that loads the executables, the last statement is "cleaning up". At that point I get a blank [blue] screen. Any ideas? TIA Ethan
32 and 64 bit
Dear List - I am now trying to repoair my X-Window-less computer. I now have a 64 bit Lenovo box on which I have loaded testing [enough tragedies with unstable]. How do I safely move the files and executables from the 32 bit system to the 64 bit system? Which files/executables should I leave as 32 bit.? TIA Ethan
testiing and sid
1] My apologies to those who noted that I was sending HTML emails. Thunderbird is on the computer with no X windows. When I fix that computer the HTML emails will be a thing of the past. 2] In reference to fixing the the computer with the broken X windows, would it be reasonable to load testing on another hard drive, and then copy the appropriate directories from the broken distribution? If it OK, which directories should I copy? Any precautions? TIA Ethan
Maximum RAM
Dear List - I am running 32 bit sid with a pae kernel. What is the maximum RAM that can be used? Are there any command line statement(s) that will enable the system to use more than 4 GB of RAM? TIA Ethan

Currently, the default is not generating xorg.conf [7] (the system tries to detect the video hardware at each boot), but that was not working in my laptop. Then I used some scripts from Musix/Knoppix to generate a valid xorg.conf [8] . Be sure to have installed the Vesa modules for X and/or the suitable X modules for your video hardware. You may try `Xorg -configure` to try to generate a /etc/X11/xorg.conf [9] file. No Video
Dear List - I was having problems with the video on my Linux box; ie no video, only terminal after an update. I am running jessy/sid 32 bit. The question was whether the hard drive and/or the Intel video chip on the board were bad. A disk test showed no errors, and a clean boot from a live CD showed that the video chip was good. The question now is how to heal the system. A new install, preserving the /home directory is not an option, since I have a broken DOS partition on the hard drive. An install will remove the DOS partition, which has a large amount of critical data. So How do I repair the broken Linux partition? TIA Ethan

Do you have backports enabled? Are you running Wheezy? (if no, what release are you running?) Ideally you'll have Wheezy and backports/Testing, or Unstable - in which case use the Google repository. First clean up:- # apt-get -sf install | more The -s will stop the actions from actually happening. Apt 'should' offer to remove google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb [1] If it does, proceed:- # apt-get -f install (adjust to suit your Debian release) For Wheezy:- Add Google Chrome repositories # echo "# wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub [2] | apt-key add - # or (gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net [3] --recv A040830F7FAC5991 && gpg --export --armor A040830F7FAC5991 |$ # Google Chrome repo http://www.google.com/linuxrepositories/ [4] deb http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ [5] stable main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list [6] Add the key # wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub [7] | apt-key add - Add backports (may not be necessary):- # echo "# backports deb http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/debian/ [8] wheezy-backports main contrib non-free # deb-src http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/debian/ [9] wheezy-backports main contrib non-free" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/backports.list [10] # apt-get update # apt-get install google-chrome-stable $ dpkg -l google-chrome-stable google-chrome-stable 31.0.1650.57-1 Kind regards This is wehat I get: root@meow:/opt# apt-get install google-chrome-stable Reading package lists... No Display was Nvidia Problems
Dear List After removing all th eNvidia driversd I fouind that I did not have a default window manager. /etc/X11/default-desktop-manager did not exist. so nano /etc/X11/default-desktop-manager and set the value to /etc/gdm3 dpkg-configure gdm3 service gdm3 start reboot Login screen login all the screen shows is the time..no icons. The desktop files exist. Added another user to see if my desktop files were corrupted. With Gnome classic, the login screen has four icons on the top right [on/off sound language and applications for hard of hearing, or vision]. After login, a blank screen that reverts to the login screen. TIA. Ethan
Re: NVIDIA Problem?
If you don't have an NVIDIA graphics card, then remove the nvidia packages: * glx-alternative-nvidia * nvidia-driver * libgl1-nvidia-glx and instead, install libgl1-mesa-glx. This should allow your INTEL card to do the 3D acceleration. Darac - Thanks. I checked, no Nvidia device. Did as above. Computer is now in infinite loop. Ask for a reboot, reboots and returns to the terminal login prompt. TIA Ethan

First off, it's NOT a problem with the NVIDIA driver. I can tell that because you're actually using the intel driver. If you have an NVIDIA device available (either as your only graphics device or as a secondary card), then you have a bigger problem. > > With your indulgence and my apologies for the length of the files, here > they are: Thanks. I ran smartctl on the hard drive, and it is OK. I am a newbie. I hope that I am correct, but you said that the hard drive might have problems. As per above, thankfully it is healthy. Your next comment was that there might be a problem with the video card. If that is true, I should replace the video card. What do you recommend? The computer is a IBM ThinkCentre M50 8189.
