Console 4 (Left Alt+F4) should show a log related to installation.

Try to switch to that console when the installer gets stuck,
 and see what it says.
(you can go back to the installer console by pressing Left Alt+F1)

 Dear List -
In the installation, at the end of  the screen that loads the
executables, the last statement is "cleaning up".  At that point I
get a blank [blue] screen.
Any ideas?

Ethan--
When the system asks" do I want to scan any more disks", and I then
insert a new disk, the system  complains that it cannot set up apt.
Hope this helps.

 Hi,

My system is based on the Musix distribution, that is based on
Knoppix
and Debian, and was updated to newer Debian releases. Currently, the
default is not generating xorg.conf [7] (the system tries to detect
the
video hardware at each boot), but that was not working in my laptop.
Then I used some scripts from Musix/Knoppix to generate a valid
xorg.conf [8] . Be sure to have installed the Vesa modules for X
and/or the
suitable X modules for your video hardware. You may try `Xorg
 -configure` to try to generate a /etc/X11/xorg.conf [9] file.

I had recently video problems (frozen screen). The problems were
resolved just by running 'videoconfig' script from Musix/Knoppix. It
 generated a proper /etc/X11/xorg.conf [3] .

No Video

2013-11-27 Thread erosenberg
Dear List  -
I was having problems with the video on my Linux box; ie no video,
only terminal after an update.  I am running jessy/sid 32 bit.  The
question was whether the hard drive and/or the Intel video chip on the
board were bad.  A disk test showed no errors,  and a clean boot
from a live CD showed that the video chip was good.
The question now is how to heal the system.  A new install,
preserving the /home directory is not an option, since I have a broken
DOS partition on the hard drive.  An install will remove the DOS
partition, which has a large amount of critical data.
So
How do I repair the broken Linux partition?
TIA
Ethan

If the USB is available to Grub you should be able to boot from it
like
with any other storage device. If this is a Debian machine insert
the
USB stick and run 'update-grub' as root. If everything works fine
you
should have a new entry in the Grub menu with the USB stick "OS".

If you can't boot it please try to reproduce any error messages as
faithfully as possible and copy-paste the relevant part from
 /boot/grub/grub.cfg [3], somewhere between the

 ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###
 ### END /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###

markers. If in doubt just attach the whole file.

 Kind regards,
 Andrei

ignore the version number when you see those sort of messages from

 apt-get install google-chrome-unstable
 apt-get install google-chrome-beta

 It's not in squeeze-backports - it's in google. (don't know 'where'
you
 got that from)

You have not added the google repository to your sources.list/s [2]

You don't have squeeze-backports enabled anyway (which is good, it'd
 break your Wheezy system).

 1. As root, copy and paste the following block of text into a
terminal:-

echo "### THIS FILE IS AUTOMATICALLY CONFIGURED ###
 # wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub
[3] |
 apt-key add -
 # Google Chrome repo http://www.google.com/linuxrepositories/ [4]
 deb http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ [5] stable main" >
 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list [6]

That will create a file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list
[7]
containing the location of the google repositories.

 2. As root, copy and paste the following code into a terminal:-
 wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub
[8] |
 apt-key add -

That will download the Google code signing key and add it to your
system

 3. As root, copy and paste the following code into a terminal:-
 apt-get update

That will update the apt database with the list of packages
available at
the repositories listed in /etc/apt/sources.list [9] and any files
called
 *.list in /etc/apt/sources.list.d [10]
Your system will then know about the google-chrome package

 4. Finally, as root copy and paste the following code into a
terminal:-
 apt-get install google-chrome stable

 Kind regards

Thanks -

This is what I get:

root@meow:/# cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list

Don't worry about it. Easily fixed.

 >
 > Debian wants to remove what was installed. I Can we solve this??

 Just finish (say yes)
 # apt-get -f install

That will remove the partially installed google-chrome

Then remove the package you originally installed from the /opt
directory
(the installer will still be sitting there)

Make sure you have both backports and the google-chrome repository
listed in /etc/apt/sources.list [3] or somewhere in
/etc/apt/sources.list/*.list [4]

 Update the apt database
 # apt-get update

Now install the latest google-chrome stable *and* it's
dependancies:-
 # apt-get install google-chrome-stable
 (say yes)

Let us know if you have any problems after that.

 Kind regards

This is what I get:

I'd either use Chromium from the Debian repository, or if you 'need'
the
latest Google version, I'd add the Google repository - then I'd
clean up
the attempted one-package-install and install from repository.

 Do you have backports enabled?
Are you running Wheezy? (if no, what release are you running?)

Ideally you'll have Wheezy and backports/Testing, or Unstable - in
which
 case use the Google repository.

 First clean up:-
 # apt-get -sf install | more

The -s will stop the actions from actually happening.
Apt 'should' offer to remove google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb
[1]
 If it does, proceed:-
 # apt-get -f install

(adjust to suit your Debian release)

 For Wheezy:-
 Add Google Chrome repositories
 # echo "# wget -q -O -
https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub [2] | apt-key
add -
 # or (gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net [3] --recv A040830F7FAC5991 &&
gpg
 --export --armor A040830F7FAC5991 |$
 # Google Chrome repo http://www.google.com/linuxrepositories/ [4]
 deb http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ [5] stable main" >
 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list [6]

 Add the key
 # wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub
[7] |
 apt-key add -

Add backports (may not be necessary):-
 # echo "# backports
 deb http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/debian/ [8] wheezy-backports
main
 contrib non-free
 # deb-src http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/debian/ [9]
wheezy-backports main
 contrib non-free" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/backports.list [10]

 # apt-get update
 # apt-get install google-chrome-stable
 $ dpkg -l google-chrome-stable
 google-chrome-stable 31.0.1650.57-1

 Kind regards

Re: NVIDIA Problem?

2013-11-06 Thread erosenberg

If you don't have an NVIDIA graphics card, then remove the nvidia
 packages:
 * glx-alternative-nvidia
 * nvidia-driver
 * libgl1-nvidia-glx
and instead, install libgl1-mesa-glx. This should allow your INTEL
card
 to do the 3D acceleration.

Darac -

Thanks.

I checked, no Nvidia device.

Did as above. Computer is now in infinite loop. Ask for a reboot,
reboots and returns to the terminal login prompt.

TIA

Ethan

OK. First off, it's NOT a problem with the NVIDIA driver. I can tell
that because you're actually using the intel driver. If you have an
NVIDIA device available (either as your only graphics device or as a
secondary card), then you have a bigger problem.

Thanks.

I ran  smartctl on the hard drive, and it is OK.

I am a newbie. I hope that I am correct, but you said that the hard
drive might have problems.  As per above, thankfully it is healthy.

Your next  comment was that there might be a problem with the video
card.  If that is true, I should replace the video card.  What do
you recommend?  The computer is a   IBM ThinkCentre M50 8189.

Darac's office is closed for a holiday. Anyone have ideas about this?
