GRUB not applying Intel Microcode?

2019-10-23 Thread Kyle K

Hello,

I'm unsure whether or not the latest Intel CPU microcode is getting
applied in my Debian 10 install. I have non-free repo enabled and
firmware-linux firmware-linux-nonfree intel-microcode iucode-tool
installed. In my grub.cfg I don't see anything that resembles "initrd
/intel-ucode.img /initrd.img-4.19.0-6-amd64". In fact
/boot/intel-ucode.img is not even present. I tried rerunning
'update-initramfs -u -k all' and regenerating grub.cfg with
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub.cfg

dmesg | grep microcode:

1. Is microcode getting applied?
2. How come Debian doesn't generate /boot/intel-ucode.img like other
distros?

Thank you.

Must run pulseaudio as root to get sound

2014-04-09 Thread Kyle Bentley
Hello everyone,

I'm running Jessie x64 with the XFCE DE. I've noticed that as of last
week sometime, after an update, I have to kill pulseaudio, and restart
it with "pulseaudio -D --system" in order to get any sound. I haven't
made any modifications that I think would have any influence on
pulseaudio, and I get the same behavior with any of the old kernels I
boot into. I can also run alsamixer, see all sound cards, adjust
sliders, ect... but nothing other than restarting pulse brings back sound.

Thanks for any advice

Removing x11-common

2013-08-06 Thread Kyle Kuhn
Hi,

I wasn't sure where to start so I started here.

I am developing my own Distro of Linux, and I am using Debian as a base.
I am trying to remove all programs dependent on the X11-Common package
without actually removing the X11-Common package. I am using the most
recent Debian LTS. Is there a way APT can do this, or will I have to remove
the x11-common package, then "#apt-get autoremove" and reinstall x11-common?

Thanks in advanced.

Is there a mute option? Perhaps you need to un-mute the channels? The
faders might be at 100%, anyway the channels can be muted.

I'm using professional sound cards, that need special mixers, so I don't
know what options are for such on-board devices and alsamixer. "[off]"
seems to lead to a mute option?!

To unmute: run alsamixer, go to the channel you want (master, etc) and
hit "m".

pulseaudio is gone, all channels are turned up and not muted.

Another thought I had: do you have an /etc/asound.conf or ~/.asoundrc ?

I have no /etc/asound.conf or ~/.asoundrc

You are right, I did have the volume turned down when I ran the alsa
info script. I apologize for that, but I did turn my sound all the way
up, and here is the new reading:

Simple mixer control 'Master',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined penum
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 63
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 63 [100%] [0.00dB] [off]
  Front Right: Playback 63 [100%] [0.00dB] [off]

Again I apologize for the confusion on the alsa-info output.

My output of amixer for my VT1708S is:

...
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined penum
Playback channels: Mono
Limits: Playback 0 - 42
Mono: Playback 42 [100%] [0.00dB] [on]
...

If I set 'Master' with alsamixer to 0 (as I believe your is) I hear
nothing over my speakers. Is the master set to 0?

I turned it to 100%, and still no sound plays though the speakers.

Any other ideas?

Besides that, find your audio devices with 'aplay -l' and/or 'aplay -L',

aplay -l only lists one playback device, so I'm not sure what else I

Note that aplay is picky about file formats. If I recall, flac files
won't play. I use wav files and have generally been successful.

No sound comes from the speakers on the laptop. For some reason I do
hear sound though the headphone jack, but not though the speakers.

The volume is not muted (I've made sure with alsamixer), and I know
the speakers work.

I get this problem with anything, from aplay to YouTube videos, no
sound comes from the laptop speakers.

I thought the alsa-info was the best way to show what I was working
with and to help give as much info as needed, but here are a few of
the ALSA versions:

Driver version: 1.0.24
Library version:1.0.23
Utilities version: 1.0.23

I believe I'm using PulseAudio, 0.9.21-3+squeeze1. I'm just trying to
get sound to play though my speakers on my laptop.

No sound on AC'97 Audio Controller

2011-12-23 Thread Kyle Schwarz
I'm having issues getting the sound to work on a laptop that has a
AC'97 Audio Controller. The laptop is a Compaq Presario 2720US.

I'm not sure what is causing this issue, but I could really use some
help to resolve it.

I've attached the output from the ALSA Information Script v 0.4.60.

For some reason I do have sound with the latest Puppy Linux, Slacko
5.3.1. Slacko 5.3.1 uses ALSA as well, but might be configured
different.

Any help would be great, I can also offer any other info that might be needed.

[SOLVED] events/0 and events/1 maxing CPU to 100%, related to wireless or eth0 on a T61 Thinkpad

2011-03-07 Thread Kyle Barbour
O.K., so amazingly this is solved, at least on the practical end. I
have no idea why this works, and I've provided some more information
below if people want to pursue this or for others trying to solve this
problem, but the solution that worked for me was powering off the
computer, unplugging it, removing the battery, waiting 30 seconds,
plugging it back in, reattaching the battery, and powering back up.
I've been monitoring htop and CPU usage is normal with eth0 up. No
idea if eth0 works as I can't currently test it, but I have no reason
to believe that it doesn't.

Wireless is still wonky, but that's another issue, even if it's
possibly related.

This solution was found from here:

Thanks for all the help! More information is below for anyone who wants it.

That's a good idea, I hadn't checked there. Unfortunately, I don't see
anything there, either by searching around, by checking the
Category:T61 page (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T61), the
page for my wireless card (which if I remember correctly is
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_PRO/Wireless_3945ABG_Mini-PCI_Express_Adapter),
or the page for what they say is my ethernet card
(http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_Gigabit_Ethernet_(10/100/1000)_PCI-Express).
However, you're right that it may be a Thinkpad issue - the people on
the forum I quoted earlier had a Thinkpad X61, which has the same
wireless and ethernet cards.

However, after searching around, there's other reports of similar
behavior going back a while, such as here,
http://lkml.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0605.2/0212.html,
although I couldn't get much out of that.

> Anything in syslog?

Well, if I bring up eth0 ("# ifconfig eth0 up"), wait for it to lag,
and then turn eth0 off again ("# ifconfig eth0 down"), this is what
shows up in syslog:

Mar 7 23:08:03 mjollnir kernel: [26127.412486] e1000e :00:19.0:

Mar 7 23:08:03 mjollnir kernel: [26127.468269] e1000e :00:19.0:
irq 29 for MSI/MSI-X
Mar  7 23:08:03 mjollnir kernel: [26127.468919] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP):
eth0: link is not ready

The only entry in /var/log/messages is fairly innocuous (I think):

Mar  7 23:08:03 mjollnir kernel: [26127.468919] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP):
eth0: link is not ready

And it also shows up in dmesg (via "dmesg | tail"):

[26127.412486] e1000e :00:19.0: irq 29 for MSI/MSI-X
[26127.468269] e1000e :00:19.0: irq 29 for MSI/MSI-X
[26127.468919] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready

I just Googled around for some of that stuff, but I'm way out of my
league and don't really know what that means or if it's normal or not.
Does that mean anything to you?

Now that things are working again, those entries do not show up after
using ifconfig to raise and lower the eth0 interface.

I upgraded to Debian Squeeze a week ago on my Lenovo Thinkpad T61.
Starting earlier today, after no trigger that I could determine, my
CPU (an Intel Core 2 Duo) began maxing out on one or both cores to the
point where doing anything on the computer was incredibly choppy. I
initially thought that this might have something to do with running
compiz, which had been problematic a year ago, but the choppiness and
CPU maxing was observed after running "$ metacity --replace &" and in
the gdm login screen after a reboot.

I then thought that this might have something to do with my wireless,
which is frequently dropping connections, having difficulty
connecting, and from which kerneloops has been sending off kernel
errors for the past few days (my kernel is 2.6.32-5-686 from the
Squeeze repos). I use wicd as a wireless manager, however, killing the
wicd process and "# /etc/init.d/wicd stop" failed to help. This still
seems like a possible problem source, as I've seen some posts that
suggest that removing wicd entirely and rebooting solves the problem
even when stopping the process doesn't (such as in the post cited
below). However, as removing wicd eliminates what is currently my only
way of accessing the internet, I haven't tried that. Further, what I'm
about to describe seems to possibly contradict this being a wireless
issue (although it might still be).

I eventually found this post,
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=88781, which suggests
running shutting down the eth0 interface ("# ifconfig eth0 down").
Shockingly, that actually worked, although the CPU still frequently
runs high. Turning eth0 back on causes the CPU to max out again. This
fix is imperfect since I'd like to be able to use the eth0 interface,
but it works at the moment.

Any idea what's going on here and/or how to fix it?

Re: Ports like system for debian.

2010-05-27 Thread Kyle Dassoff
It isn't Debian, but Arch is a nice distro as long as you don't mind
configuring more of the system on your own. I've been using Arch for a
while (as well as Debian).
Gentoo is also a good choice if you want tons of control over how
packages are compiled (look up USE flags on Gentoo's documentation) and
don't mind the fact that installation of software takes a _long_ time,
since it's source based and everything is compiled during installation.
I used to use Gentoo a while ago, and it's a great system, but I
personally found it to be more effort than I was willing to put in and
large programs took too long to compile.

If you're looking for a ports-like system to run on top of Debian, you
can also check out NetBSD's pkgsrc. It started out as a fork of the
ports system and is very similar, but NetBSD runs the project and it
runs on more than just NetBSD. They have instructions and downloads for
non-NetBSD systems, and I believe it will install into /usr/local like
FreeBSD's Ports does. I haven't used pkgsrc myself, so I can't give you
any more information than that.

I believe you're looking for the Gentoo Portage system:

AFAIK, there is no Debian equivalent, nor any other Linux distro, that
manages
and builds packages from source, in the manner of BSD ports or Gentoo
Portage.

If you're talking about source based dostros like gentoo, there are
others which are pretty good as well... Examples:

sourceMage (I like this one a lot)
sorcerer (never tried it, but it's the original sorcery stuff)
Lunar (as sourceMage forked from sorcerer)

There might be others based on linux from scratch as well... So
gentoo is not the only option around, although perhpas the mos known
among the source based distros... Bad thing about source based
distros for me is that I have pretty slow old boxes, and when
compiling lets say gcc, g++, gcj, and the like, well, it just takes
forever...

One binary distro that comes closer to freeBSD ports concept is
archLinux, it has in its binary repos a "core", an "extra", and
"community" provided binaries. But if you don't find what you need
there's also AUR, which is a repo with pacman PKGBUILDs available and
with yaourt for example you can install them almost the same way you
install binaries, but what happens beneath is that the sources are
downloaded, the package is built, and then finally installed...

So not debian, but closer to the freeBSD approach. Another thing
similar to freeBSD is the init scripts stuff, controlled by rc.conf...

Bad thing is that it's not debian, :-) Also bad thing is that it only
supports i686 and x86_64, plus an early port to ARM (non official
project), and another port to hurd (that just started, non official as
well)... Did I say bad thing it's not debian already, :-)

Amazingly, this worked. It hung for about two minutes after the
hardware detect, and after I'd given up, continued going. Here's the
boot options I used:

boot: expert noapic nousb acpi=off

I tried using fewer, but couldn't get it to work with just noapic or nousb, etc.

Do I need to do something to re-enable these things once I have a
functional Debian system?

Awesome. Thanks!

The install now hangs during the install software phase, and for I
believe a much more innocuous reason. I was able to switch to console
4 (CTRL-ALT-F4), which displays the message: To continue, enter "Yes";
to abort, enter "No:, but there's no prompt to answer it. (The
question relates to "untrusted packages", presumably since it can't
get the GPG keys.) I haven't figured out how to pass this threshold
yet, but maybe there's a way. I'm optimistic. If you have thoughts,
I'd love to hear them.

Thanks for all the help!

Hm.

I'm not really sure what to do here - it might just be that the laptop

It looks like the regular Lenny .iso images allow for this, but the
install hangs just the same as trying to install the old-fashioned
BIOS way.

Point taken.

Actually, it looks like I *am* having connectivity problems (sorry,
just got the laptop from a friend) - I'm not able to visit that site,
unfortunately. I downloaded the debian.exe file on another computer
and copied it over. The Wikipedia article on the installer

there's a way to have it get it's data from the CD-ROM drive, but so
far I haven't figured it out.

I'll see if I can't resolve my networking issue and then I'll try
that. In the meantime, do you have any suggestions for how I might fix
my problem without the web?

Maybe I wasn't clear - the problem isn't the lack of an internet
connection, but the fact the the installation crashes after the

Debian Lenny install failing on Dell Latitude CPi A366ST during hardware detect phase

2009-08-09 Thread Kyle Barbour
Hello everyone,/

I'm trying to install Debian Lenny on an old Dell Latitude CPi A366ST,
currently running Win98. KNOPPIX boots on it fine, as does Win98.
However, when I try to install Debian on it, the install hangs right
after "Detecting PC card services". At first, I thought this might
have to do with the D-Link DWL-650 PC card adapter I have, so I
removed it to no avail. I then tried

boot: expert hw-detect/start_pcmcia=off

but this didn't help either, with the install now hanging right after
loading the usb-storage kernel module.

During the hang, the optical drive that I'm installing from continues
to spin wildly - it's just that no progress is made.

Ultimately, I'd like to get both the install and PCMCIA working, since
a PC card is the only way I can connect to the web (this laptop has no
Ethernet port, etc.).

Any thoughts on how to generate a successful install?

Thanks for the help!

PROBLEM FIXED! Here's what fixed it - I read a post somewhere about a
hardware mute for Thinkpads, which can be disabled by pressing on the
volume up button (not the software volume up, the physical volume up
button located next to the blue ThinkVantage button on the top of the
keyboard). I did it and everything worked! Hopefully this'll last.

Thank you so much for all of your help! I'm always touched by your
willingness to lend me, a total stranger, a hand when they need it.
Thank you again. I'll let you know if it stops working in the future.

I have no idea - honestly, I just went with the out-of-the-box debian
lenny configuration.

According to alsamixer and the xfce volume control applet, I'm
controlling the right sound card (they report HDA Intel and HDA Intel
Analog Devices AD1984, respectively).

@Nigel:

I installed linux-image-2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686 to check, and still no
sound. Historically, however (as in, before I started having problems
a few days ago), I've had sound work on a 2.6.24 kernel before.

I didn't have this in my alsa-base file, and I've now added it. Still
no sound, though.

Nothing that I can see, unfortunately. Master is at full, headphones
reads 00, PCM is at full, speaker reads 00. IEC958 is off, but turning
it on doesn't seem to change anything. All the mics are muted.

Gah! I must've messed up the copy/paste or something. Thanks so much
for your diligence. Here's what it should have read:

snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm,snd_hwdep,snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device

And here are the other commands (lsof -n | grep /dev/dsp returns nothing):

No sound on a Thinkpad T61 w/ ALSA and AS1984 sound card (redux)

2008-12-23 Thread Kyle Barbour
Hello everyone,

A while back (http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2008/01/msg02415.html),
I was having trouble getting sound to work on my Thinkpad T61.
Although that was resolved and everything worked wonderfully, a few
days ago sound stopped working again, and I haven't been successful at
fixing the problem. Neither the internal speakers nor the headphones
produce any sound. The master volume and the PCM volume are on full,
neither are muted, and both the speaker and headphones are enabled.

My sound card is an Analog Devices 1984 (AD1984) sound card, and I'm
running Debian Lenny (2.6.26-1-686 kernel) with ALSA 1.0.16. According
to thinkwiki (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/AD1984), this card should
be supported in the kernel and in the alsa driver in the versions I'm
using.

lsmod | grep snd_hda_intel returns:

snd_hdsnd_hda_intel 324248 2
snd_pcm62596 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel
snd45604 12
snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device
snd_page_alloc 7816 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm
a_intel 324248 2
snd_pcm62596 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel
snd45604 12
snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device
snd_page_alloc 7816 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm

so it looks as though the correct module is loaded.

I tried reconfiguring the sound card with alsaconf, which didn't fix
the problem, although it reported a successful status. Compiling ALSA
from alsa-source (using module-assistant) and manually loading the
modules didn't fix anything either (so maybe not an ALSA problem?).

Some more information:

dpkg unable to write to /var/lib/dpkg/status, /var partition full

2008-04-20 Thread Kyle Barbour
Hello there,

I booted up my system this morning and tried to install something with
aptitude, only to get the error message:

W: Could not lock the cache file. Opening in read-only mode; any
changes you make to the states of packages will NOT be preserved!
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a'
to correct the problem.

So, I tried running dpkg --configure -a, which gave me:

dpkg: failed to write status record about `vlc-nox' to
`/var/lib/dpkg/status': No space left on device

I ran df, and I found that my /var partition is entirely full (1.9 GB
of 1.9 GB). I don't know why - last night I ran 'aptitude
safe-upgrade', maybe that has something to do with it? I'm not sure
how to fix this problem - I'm assuming that I should pare down some
files, but I'm not sure which ones or how to prevent this from
happening again. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the help,

Thank you!

As an effort to get something else working, I upgraded my kernel to
sid's 2.6.23 one. Upon loading that, my sound began to work, so the
problem is solved (not entirely sure what's going on there - ALSA is
still 1.0.14). Thank you very much for your help, I really appreciate

Looking at the vim documentation, it looks like you use the :mkview
and :loadview commands (:mkview before you exit the file, :loadview
once you reopen it). I've never done this, so your mileage may vary.

No sound on a ThinkPad T61 w/ a AD1984 sound card

2008-01-24 Thread Kyle Barbour
Hello there,

I've been unable to get sound working (for more than a short while,
more on that in a minute) on my ThinkPad T61, which has an Analog
Devices 1984 (AD1984) sound controller. I'm currently running Debian
lenny (2.6.22-3-686 kernel, alsa 1.0.15).

When at first the sound didn't work, I followed the instructions at
http://www.klabs.be/~fpiat/linux/debian/Lenny_on_Thinkpad_T61/#Sound;
that is, to run:

apt-get install module-assistant alsa-source
module-assistant prepare
module-assistant update
module-assistant a-i alsa-source
apt-get remove --purge alsa-modules-$(uname -r)
invoke-rc.d alsa-utils restart

and then open volume control, go to the "Switch" tab, untick and
retick the speaker tab, unmute PCM, and then press the "volume up"
button on the keyboard a few times (to eliminate the hardware mute, I
believe). To my delight, this worked. However, when I shut down and
later rebooted, nothing worked anymore. Redoing all of these steps
didn't help. Bizarrely, the volume control application no longer even
has the "Switch" tab, so I can't follow part of the steps anymore.
I've googled around, but haven't come across anything that looked like
it could resolve my problem. In some desperation I tried reinstalling
lenny, and even then when I followed the above steps nothing worked.
Any thoughts?

Thank you,
Kyle Barbour

Etch not booting on Adaptec 2420sa

2007-02-27 Thread Kyle Messineo

Hello,

I just installed the latest etch distro (kernel 2.6.18-3-686) onto a
whitebox intel pc running an Adaptec 2420sa raid controller and 4x sata
750gb hd's. The raid is configured as raid5 on three drives with the 4th
running hotspare.

The etch installer booted fine, saw the raid vol, let me partition it
and run a full install. I installed the grub loader into mbr and all
looked fine and dandy.

The unit boots to the grub menu just fine. When I select the kernel to
boot, it gives me the folloeing and just hangs:

Booting 'Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.18-3-686'

root (hd0,0)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83

initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.18-3-686

Any suggestions?
I booted to rescue mode and mounted the partition. The kernel images are
there and look ok.

Hi;
I'm not exactly sure what I did to make this (sort of) work; maybe
downloading mtools did it (I could not get iwlcontainer-lnx-x86-10.tgz
from Iomega (http://www.iomega.com/software/ ) to work). Anyway I can
now mount, see and read data on the zip disk.

However. When I tried to copy a directory onto the disk it sort of when
berserk. I can hear it accessing repeatedly for 15 min. I could not kill
-9 the cp command (!?!) . I finally rebooted to get the disk out. I put
the disk in a windoz machine: some of the copying seemed to have worked
but with shortened (8 character upper case) names (I don't know much
about fat vs other format but this looks like the problem). I've put
the disk back into the Linux box and on mount /mnt/zip (no cp command)
it has gone back into this clicking/access mode. "umount: /mnt/zip:
device is busy" So ... what now?

The dmesg output you pasted above shows the zip drive on hdd. As
root try running "mount /dev/hdd /mnt/zip". If that works, you'll need
to change the sda4 in your fstab entry to hdd.
If that doesn't work, you may want to run "fdisk /dev/hdd" as root to
see if the disk is partitioned weird and then add the appropriate
partition number to your mount command/fstab entry (hdd1, hdd2, etc.).

I'm new to Debian (having just switched from Red Hat), this is a new
install of Woody. An earlier message mentioned something about a ppa
module but I can find no ref anywhere to that.

If dmesg is showing that it's already been setup on /dev/hdd, you
shouldn't need to load any more modules... except maybe fat or vfat, but
that would be a totally different error from what you pasted above.

The relevant cdrom line from /etc/udev/cdsymlinks.sh is in the default
/etc/udev/rules.d/udev.rules file so I don't think that's my problem but I'll
try anyways

Nope that didn't seem to work... my cdrom devices are still not getting created.
I'm just restarting udev... do I have to reboot for the changes to take effect?

It used to /dev/hdc but those devices aren't listed in /dev anymore
... which is probably why udev isn't creating the links... it isn't creating the
devices.
FYI I do have a /dev/hdc in my fstab which I used for mounting the cdrom

I looked through /proc and /sys and I believe that all my devices are listed in one
way
or another I don't _really_ know what is going on in those directories...

Any way I can use that links.conf file you mentioned to get udev to create links to my
cdrom?

I installed all of the above and rebooted everything seemed cool except

Anyone else had this problem?

This zip disk is formatted, isn't it?

Try one more mount command - "mount -t msdos /dev/hdd4 /mnt/zip".

HTH,
Jacob

Yes, this is a backup disk with stuff on it.

:/home/kyle# mount -t msdos /dev/hdd4 /mnt/zip
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdd4,
or too many mounted file systems
(could this be the IDE device where you in fact use
ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?)

The drive does react and sound like it tries to read the disk. I tired to new
partition a different disk with fdisk but get the same thing.

Having spent some time Googleing I have discovered what may be the problem (and I'm
learning a lot!): vfat.o (msdos, FAT16 etc.) is NOT in /lib/modules/2.2.20-idepci/fs/
(in fact no where in the system- how I installed a clean system without it is beyond
me, lots of other modules are there).

I think maybe if I had version kernal version 2.2.20 of vfat I could insmod it (other
versions of vfat will not fool insmod -I tried using a different version from an old
RedHat system).

I don't know any other way of getting around this, if that is the problem (except
perhaps a kernel recompile, and I don't have time to learn how to do that right now).

Thanks for the help, any suggestions?

Whew! I though it was just me.
I get the same thing with just the k7 flavour... the standard i386
version works me so the i386-smp flavour might work for you.

I filed a bug using the reportbug tool but it hasn't shown up in the

hope it worked ok.

I bet not, since it can't do anything useful (or amusing, for that
matter).

I essentially I think hibernate would keep the uptime going, no restart right?
someone try it for a few days, see if the uptime stays.

these servers are constant.  They have been updated with the latest patches.

I want to modify the source code of uptime to allow for them to show that they have been running for over 500 days.  My goal is to run them two years..  then i might add more ram or something.   They only have 256.  Then I will probably update to 2.6 kernel if it has migrated into stable by then.

thanks alot everyone, now lets test it on the 2.6 kernel.  See if we can get a machine to roll over.

Debian uptime 497 days

2003-09-29 Thread Kyle Loree

I have two Debian severs that were installed on kernel 2.2.x and are now 2.4.17-686-smp.

one has seemed to have been restarted.
09:41:45 up 2 days,  4:26,

in reading http://e-zine.nluug.nl/hold.html?cid=158  the uptime returns to zero after 497 days, 2 hours, 27 minutes and 53 seconds
it states that it is only a kernel 2.2.x bug, but according to http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg49872.html
is it still in the debian kernel.  Has it been, or will it be removed in 2.6 ?

the other system is at 486 days 16 hours 36 minutes, and I expect that it will do the rollover in another 11 days.
is there anything I can do so that the uptime will be retained?

Both systems are running stable and are up to date on patches.
Both are running on ups.

Thanks alot people for whatever assistance you can give.

Re: nvidia drivers & kernel 2.4.14

2001-12-08 Thread Kyle Girard
If you don't want fast 3d the nv module in X 4.0 will suit you fine

I would suggest that you try the nvidia drivers though...from
www.nvidia.com or apt-get nvidia-kernel-src nvidia-glx-src from unstable
Once compiled and installed I get 3d perfromance on par with windows

My problem (discussed below) was that I was using gcc-3.0 when compiling
nvidia's drivers..when my kernel was compilied with 2.95 if you use the
same compiler for both you should be good... Nvidia told me that newer
versions of the driver will detect this so people won't go through what
I went through..

As to X 4.0... I don't know if they work with X4.0 might have to upgrade
to 4.1 ...

I used gcc 2.95.4 this time and got a little farther module
compiles/inserts fine but now when I try and start X I get the following
message

(==) NVIDIA(0): Write-combining range (0xe300,0x100)
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to allocate LUT context DMA
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***

My roomate who's running an almost identical machine except with a
geforce 2 doesn't have any problems...

Anyone have any ideas? I'm thinking about submitting a bug to
nvidia

Here's my info:

Debian (sid)
2.4.14 -- from .deb
Xfree86 4.1.0
Nvidia TNT
gcc 3.0.2

I can get the module to compile... but I get unresolved symbols if I use
the includes from /usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.14/include instead of
headers from /usr/src/kernel-headers-2.4.14/include

What are you gcc are you using?

nvidia drivers & kernel 2.4.14

2001-11-14 Thread Kyle Girard
Has anyone been able to get the nvidia drivers to work with the stock
2.4.14 kernel?

I've compiled the drivers many times before but it just doesn't want to
work with this kernel ... no matter what I do I get unresolved
symbols... i've tried using the kernel headers in the kernel-source
package and the kernel-headers package but nothing works

Help, Please! I need my UT!!

I'm running

Pentium II 350
Debian (sid)
XFree 4.1.0

Upgrade problem with kernel and modutils

2001-11-01 Thread Kyle Girard

I was trying to upgrade my system the other day and apt-get upgrade
first tells me that my modutils can't be configured since my kernel
sturcture has changed. I figured nothing of but now it's not just
modutils it's initrd-tools and modconf as well. I tried upgrading to a
new kernel kernel-image-2.4.12-686. But I can't install this since it
requires a newer modutils I'm having a little circular dependancy
problem ... how do I get modutils, initrd-tools, modconf and a new
kernel image to install? When modutils requires a newer kernel and a
newer kernel requires modutils?

I'm Running unstable with 2.4.9 kernel

I have rogers and I'm working fine although my setup is a little
different from yours (2.2.17 kernel, unstable). I used dhcp-client and
here's my dhclient.conf file

send host-name "hostname";

and here's my /etc/network/interfaces

iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp

And everything works great.

I try this from debian to firewall and it logs in fine:

me:/home/me >$ ssh -C -X firewall
[EMAIL PROTECTED]'s password:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ nedit

but now it just hangs and never ever returns sniff sniff

do I still have to set my display? I don't think that I have to if i'm
tunneling X through ssh?

My sshd_config on both debian and firwall allows x tunneling I assume
since they both have these lines:

X11Forwarding yes
X11DisplayOffset 10

does my ssh_config file need to have the same sort of thing? or does it
not matter...

I'm using openssh from non-US.

ps does this sound like problem on debian or firewall? keep in mind
firewall only has the most minimal of installations of X and other apps

Forwarding X apps

2001-10-05 Thread Kyle Girard
What does one have to do to enable X apps to be forwarded to my machine?

For two machine named debian and firewall respectively, I want to
forward a display from fireall to debian

on debian:

xhost + firewall

on firewall

export DISPLAY=debian:0

I try and run any program and I get 'cannot open DISPLAY'

so my first thought was that I didn't have the correct ports open... so
I did an nmap localhost and sure enough

Port State Service
21/tcp openftp
22/tcp openssh
515/tcpopenprinter

are the only ports open on my machine, I uncommented the x11 services
from my /etc/services restarted xinetd... I didn't think it would work
but it felt good to try...

I assume that you have to add an /etc/xinetd.conf entry for x11 but I
can't find one.. or is there something else I have to do...

Printing go bye-bye

Somewhere in between now and about hmm a month ago my ability to print has ceased.

Here's some background info:

Distribution: sid (current as of this morning)
kernel 2.4.9
Printer:  hp720c

I am using magicfilter with pnm2ppa

my printcap hasn't changed in a long time..
# This file was generated by /usr/sbin/magicfilterconfig.
#
lp|hp720c|hp:\
	:lp=/dev/lp1:sd=/var/spool/lpd/hp720c:\

	:if=/etc/magicfilter/pnm2ppa-720-bw-eco-filter:\
	:af=/var/log/lp-acct:lf=/var/log/lp-errs:

I seem to be having some issues with lpd.  I run /etc/init.d/lpd stop and it spits
Stopping printer spooler: lpd not running.

even though

ps ax | grep lpd
741 ?    S  0:00 /usr/sbin/lpd
782 pts/0    S  0:00 grep lpd
I also cannot clear the queue I have three things in there and they will not leave!  Any help would be appreciated.

Your video card is supported by Xfree86.  If your using Xfree86 3.3.x  use the XF86_SVGA sever with the tvga8900 driver  if you using the XFree 4  use the "trident" driver.

I got this info from here

Libranet, Stormix, Progeny

2001-05-26 Thread kyle
After much effort, I have totally failed on my efforts to install Debian, but I
would still like to run it. (My linux partition is past sector 1023, and it
won't make a boot floppy. I sort of managed to get around this by using the
Grub install that RedHat did, since it pointed to the correct partition, but
then Potato wouldn't recognize my cdrom drive to complete installation)

So, my question is this: if I were to install one of the debian-based distros
(it doesn't matter which), would it be easy to upgrade to debian with apt? If
so, how would I go about it?

Thanks,
  Kyle

pppoe on a new install?

2001-05-22 Thread kyle
Has anyone had any success setting up Debian on a system that connects to the
net using DSL via PPPoE? The .deb packages appear to be missing the
configuration scripts and documentation. The Roaring Penguin site only has
information on the latest version, version 3.0, which depends on libc6 2.2.2 or
greater (and is currently part of Woody). This, of course, has a lengthy
dependency chain, breaking Potato completely. Unfortunately, I can't upgrade
to Woody, because I can't connect to the net with Debian yet. Finally,
downloading Woody under Win98 doesn't work, because
c:\dists\woody\main\binary-i386\Release gets read as
dists/woody/main/binary~1/Release

Oy. So I'm having trouble. There must be some simple solution I'm missing,
anybody know what it is? Thanks!

NVdriver problems

2001-03-15 Thread Kyle Girard

Alright I've been trying to get this kernal module to work for a couple of days off and on without any success I have tried many different ways with many different kernels and I get natta, zip, zilch.  Any help would be apprieciated...

Here's my problem:

I cannot insert the NVdriver module into my kernel I get the following error:

insmod NVdriver
Using /lib/modules/2.2.19pre11/kernel/drivers/video/NVdriver

I've tried building the kernel-module from the tarball straight from nvidia, using the nvidia-kernel-src_0.9.6-2_i386.deb with kernels 2.2.15 -> 2.2.19pre11 and I get the same thing every time..

I've done everything I can think of, I followed the instructions in /usr/share/doc/nvidia-kernel-src, I've tried following the instructions from nvidia's page.. I'm not a guru when is comes to these kinda things but I can usually plow my way through but this one has me stumped...

Thanks in advance,

Kyle

ps This might be all my own dum fault since I've never been able to install a kernel module that I have built

Lots of problems: libc6, RAM not recognised etc.

2001-01-29 Thread Kyle Parfrey
Hello all::
I have just installed debian on a nice 'n fast i686 computer but have had
lots of problems getting the system working. If anyone knows a solution to
any of these I would very much appreciate the mailing of said solution to me.

1) RAM not recognised.
I have 256mb of ram, but only 64mb are being recognised. I have a MEM=256M
line in lilo.conf (this worked in mandrake) but it isn't working here. How
can I get it all to be seen??

2) Libc6 (& liblcms & libmng)
I have installed kde2 , but to do this I needed to install libc6 2.2...
instead of 2.1.3 . I think it broke my compiler (well it doesn't work)
and when I tried to install libc6-dev it said it needed the older version,
but liblcms and libmng need the newer one. I don't know how to get out of
this, or to get gcc working for that matter. Have already reinstalled gcc.
Configure scripts say I am missing 'makeinfo'.

3) Sound n printer
Any tools in debian to set up sound or printer? Otherwise I'm off to manpages
and the wonderful world of emacs..

Thanks for the help,,

Kyle

I think port 4000 is used for ICQ99, ICQ2000 uses 5190 (i think). But thank

I looked into that module and from what I gather its doesn't work with ICQ

I've looked over this package and it seems to be what I want. My question

is not too clear (at least not to me) about modifying or creating rules. I

IP masquerading

2000-12-10 Thread Kyle Peterson
I was reading the IP masq how-to and it shows how to setup ipchains in a
rc.firewall file. From what I gather, debian uses a different boot system.
How would I make the rc.firewall for a debian system? I am new to debian, I
am used to using redhat.

Network routes

2000-11-18 Thread Kyle J. Moore
I have just started using Debian in something other
than a simple network. I'm looking for what file and
syntax I should put entries for static routes. I'm
used to RedHat and things seem to be different in
Debian. Most of the docs I've seen while researching
this refer to putting things in the
/etc/init.d/network script. This doesn't seem like a
good idea as it would get overwritten during an
upgrade and it also doesn't seem to be supported
anymore as the script looks totally different? Do I
put this in /etc/network/interfaces or what? An
example of syntax would also be helpful.

Thanks.

GPM sucks. I find the best solution to this problem is '# rm

blow away the link to /dev/mouse and create a new link to /dev/mouse
from /dev/psaux.

HELP!!!

1999-05-29 Thread Kyle Landon

Hi all,

First of all I am a newbie. Second I cleared my c: and wipped win and all
files gone. Not to upset about that, I just want to get Debian working. I
can log on as my superuser and user so I can access the program. I cannot
seem to do much at the $. I run dselect with my root account but cannot
find the packages.cd. I thought Debian had a graphical interface. What
might I be doing or have done that is wrong? I get the error message
/dev/hda1 was not cleanly unmounted, check forced.

Thank you,

Kyle

Try...

man deb

and read all the SEE ALSO's too. It's pretty simple really. Maybe disect
a few odd .deb files first to get the lay of the land. Also, I believe
you need to have installed the deb package building tools as well since I
don't believe they are part of the base install.

Actually a one way hash is used, not encryption. This is why it is not
possible to decrypt it -- it quite simply is not encrypted in the first
place.

LILO and dos partitions

1997-09-27 Thread Kyle R. Hofmann
I'm installing Debian over what was formerly a Slackware partition (It's
been reformatted, thank goodness) and I'm stumped as to how I'm supposed
to get LILO to work with my dos partition. Right now, my /etc/lilo.conf
is:

compact
boot=/dev/hda1
vga=normal
delay=20
image=/vmlinuz
  label=linux
  root=/dev/hda2
  read-only
other=/dev/hda1
  label=dos
  table=/dev/hda
  loader=/boot/any_d.b

I've tried chain.b for the dos partition, and chain.b with all the extra
junk in the 0.20 documentation (Is anyone working on updating the lilo deb
file to 0.20?). Whever I attempt to boot the dos partition, I get a
screen filled with repetitions of "01 ". Linux boots fine, and, using an
dos boot disk, I can find the dos file system. Linux cannot find it; it
says that it can't find a valid MSDOS filesystem.

On a related note, WTF is that "1FA:" thingy that I got when I tried to
reboot Debian for the first time? It didn't want to do anything. I
eventually rebooted and ran lilo, after which it worked fine unless I held
down shift early in the boot sequence (in which case I got the "1FA:"
thing for a moment, and then it went into LILO).
