GRUB not applying Intel Microcode?
Hello, I'm unsure whether or not the latest Intel CPU microcode is getting applied in my Debian 10 install. I have non-free repo enabled and firmware-linux firmware-linux-nonfree intel-microcode iucode-tool installed. In my grub.cfg I don't see anything that resembles "initrd /intel-ucode.img /initrd.img-4.19.0-6-amd64". In fact /boot/intel-ucode.img is not even present. I tried rerunning 'update-initramfs -u -k all' and regenerating grub.cfg with grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub.cfg dmesg | grep microcode: [ 0.848080] microcode: sig=0x306c3, pf=0x2, revision=0x27 [ 0.848868] microcode: Microcode Update Driver: v2.2. I also experienced this issue, and the instructions from Mikael Flood, seem to have solved it. Thank you. Must run pulseaudio as root to get sound
Hello everyone, I'm running Jessie x64 with the XFCE DE. I've noticed that as of last week sometime, after an update, I have to kill pulseaudio, and restart it with "pulseaudio -D --system" in order to get any sound. I haven't made any modifications that I think would have any influence on pulseaudio, and I get the same behavior with any of the old kernels I boot into. I can also run alsamixer, see all sound cards, adjust sliders, ect... but nothing other than restarting pulse brings back sound. Thanks for any advice Kyle B Has anyone noticed similar behavior with their machine? Removing x11-common
Hi, I wasn't sure where to start so I started here. I am developing my own Distro of Linux, and I am using Debian as a base. I am trying to remove all programs dependent on the X11-Common package without actually removing the X11-Common package. I am using the most recent Debian LTS. Is there a way APT can do this, or will I have to remove the x11-common package, then "#apt-get autoremove" and reinstall x11-common? Thanks in advanced.

[SOLVED] events/0 and events/1 maxing CPU to 100%, related to wireless or eth0 on a T61 Thinkpad
O.K., so amazingly this is solved, at least on the practical end. I have no idea why this works, and I've provided some more information below if people want to pursue this or for others trying to solve this problem, but the solution that worked for me was powering off the computer, unplugging it, removing the battery, waiting 30 seconds, plugging it back in, reattaching the battery, and powering back up. I've been monitoring htop and CPU usage is normal with eth0 up. No idea if eth0 works as I can't currently test it, but I have no reason to believe that it doesn't. Wireless is still wonky, but that's another issue, even if it's possibly related. This solution was found from here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/53739 Thanks for all the help! More information is below for anyone who wants it. Unfortunately, I don't see anything there, either by searching around, by checking the Category:T61 page (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T61), the page for my wireless card (which if I remember correctly is http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_PRO/Wireless_3945ABG_Mini-PCI_Express_Adapter), or the page for what they say is my ethernet card (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Intel_Gigabit_Ethernet_(10/100/1000)_PCI-Express). However, you're right that it may be a Thinkpad issue - the people on the forum I quoted earlier had a Thinkpad X61, which has the same wireless and ethernet cards. However, after searching around, there's other reports of similar behavior going back a while, such as here, http://lkml.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0605.2/0212.html, although I couldn't get much out of that. events/0 and events/1 maxing CPU to 100%, related to wireless or eth0 on a T61 Thinkpad
Hello all, I upgraded to Debian Squeeze a week ago on my Lenovo Thinkpad T61. Starting earlier today, after no trigger that I could determine, my CPU (an Intel Core 2 Duo) began maxing out on one or both cores to the point where doing anything on the computer was incredibly choppy. I initially thought that this might have something to do with running compiz, which had been problematic a year ago, but the choppiness and CPU maxing was observed after running "$ metacity --replace &" and in the gdm login screen after a reboot. I then thought that this might have something to do with my wireless, which is frequently dropping connections, having difficulty connecting, and from which kerneloops has been sending off kernel errors for the past few days (my kernel is 2.6.32-5-686 from the Squeeze repos). I use wicd as a wireless manager, however, killing the wicd process and "# /etc/init.d/wicd stop" failed to help. This still seems like a possible problem source, as I've seen some posts that suggest that removing wicd entirely and rebooting solves the problem even when stopping the process doesn't (such as in the post cited below). However, as removing wicd eliminates what is currently my only way of accessing the internet, I haven't tried that. Further, what I'm about to describe seems to possibly contradict this being a wireless issue (although it might still be). I eventually found this post, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=88781, which suggests running shutting down the eth0 interface ("# ifconfig eth0 down"). Shockingly, that actually worked, although the CPU still frequently runs high. Turning eth0 back on causes the CPU to max out again. This fix is imperfect since I'd like to be able to use the eth0 interface, but it works at the moment. Any idea what's going on here and/or how to fix it? Re: Ports like system for debian.
It isn't Debian, but Arch is a nice distro as long as you don't mind configuring more of the system on your own. I've been using Arch for a while (as well as Debian). Gentoo is also a good choice if you want tons of control over how packages are compiled (look up USE flags on Gentoo's documentation) and don't mind the fact that installation of software takes a _long_ time, since it's source based and everything is compiled during installation. I used to use Gentoo a while ago, and it's a great system, but I personally found it to be more effort than I was willing to put in and large programs took too long to compile. If you're looking for a ports-like system to run on top of Debian, you can also check out NetBSD's pkgsrc. It started out as a fork of the ports system and is very similar, but NetBSD runs the project and it runs on more than just NetBSD. They have instructions and downloads for non-NetBSD systems, and I believe it will install into /usr/local like FreeBSD's Ports does. I haven't used pkgsrc myself, so I can't give you any more information than that. http://www.netbsd.org/docs/software/packages.html -- pkgsrc home page --Kyle On 2010-05-27 11:21, Javier Vasquez wrote: On 5/26/10, Stan Hoeppner wrote: Madhurya Kakati put forth on 5/26/2010 10:15 PM: Is there a bsd ports like system in debian? But if you don't find what you need there's also AUR, which is a repo with pacman PKGBUILDs available and with yaourt for example you can install them almost the same way you install binaries, but what happens beneath is that the sources are downloaded, the package is built, and then finally installed... So not debian, but closer to the freeBSD approach. Another thing similar to freeBSD is the init scripts stuff, controlled by rc.conf... Bad thing is that it's not debian, :-) Also bad thing is that it only supports i686 and x86_64, plus an early port to ARM (non official project), and another port to hurd (that just started, non official as well)... Did I say bad thing it's not debian already, :-) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? It hung for about two minutes after the hardware detect, and after I'd given up, continued going. Here's the boot options I used: boot: expert noapic nousb acpi=off I tried using fewer, but couldn't get it to work with just noapic or nousb, etc. Do I need to do something to re-enable these things once I have a functional Debian system? Awesome. Thanks! The install now hangs during the install software phase, and for I believe a much more innocuous reason. I was able to switch to console 4 (CTRL-ALT-F4), which displays the message: To continue, enter "Yes"; to abort, enter "No:, but there's no prompt to answer it. (The question relates to "untrusted packages", presumably since it can't get the GPG keys.) I haven't figured out how to pass this threshold yet, but maybe there's a way. I'm optimistic. Actually, it looks like I *am* having connectivity problems (sorry, just got the laptop from a friend) - I'm not able to visit that site, unfortunately. I downloaded the debian.exe file on another computer and copied it over. The Wikipedia article on the installer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/win32-loader_(Debian)) mentions that there's a way to have it get it's data from the CD-ROM drive, but so far I haven't figured it out. I'll see if I can't resolve my networking issue and then I'll try that. In the meantime, do you have any suggestions for how I might fix my problem without the web? Debian Lenny install failing on Dell Latitude CPi A366ST during hardware detect phase
Hello everyone,/ I'm trying to install Debian Lenny on an old Dell Latitude CPi A366ST, currently running Win98. KNOPPIX boots on it fine, as does Win98. However, when I try to install Debian on it, the install hangs right after "Detecting PC card services". At first, I thought this might have to do with the D-Link DWL-650 PC card adapter I have, so I removed it to no avail. I then tried boot: expert hw-detect/start_pcmcia=off but this didn't help either, with the install now hanging right after loading the usb-storage kernel module. During the hang, the optical drive that I'm installing from continues to spin wildly - it's just that no progress is made. Ultimately, I'd like to get both the install and PCMCIA working, since a PC card is the only way I can connect to the web (this laptop has no Ethernet port, etc.). Any thoughts on how to generate a successful install? Thanks for the help! Re: No sound on a Thinkpad T61 w/ ALSA and AS1984 sound card (redux)
PROBLEM FIXED! Here's what fixed it - I read a post somewhere about a hardware mute for Thinkpads, which can be disabled by pressing on the volume up button (not the software volume up, the physical volume up button located next to the blue ThinkVantage button on the top of the keyboard). I did it and everything worked! Hopefully this'll last. Thank you so much for all of your help! I'm always touched by your willingness to lend me, a total stranger, a hand when they need it. Thank you again. I'll let you know if it stops working in the future. Kyle -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? I'm going to amalgamate all of your thoughts into a single email for simplicity - not sure if that's correct protocol or not, so let me know if it would be better if I replied to each email individually. No sound on a Thinkpad T61 w/ ALSA and AS1984 sound card (redux)
Hello everyone, A while back (http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2008/01/msg02415.html), I was having trouble getting sound to work on my Thinkpad T61. Although that was resolved and everything worked wonderfully, a few days ago sound stopped working again, and I haven't been successful at fixing the problem. Neither the internal speakers nor the headphones produce any sound. The master volume and the PCM volume are on full, neither are muted, and both the speaker and headphones are enabled. My sound card is an Analog Devices 1984 (AD1984) sound card, and I'm running Debian Lenny (2.6.26-1-686 kernel) with ALSA 1.0.16. According to thinkwiki (http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/AD1984), this card should be supported in the kernel and in the alsa driver in the versions I'm using. lsmod | grep snd_hda_intel returns: snd_hdsnd_hda_intel 324248 2 snd_pcm62596 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel snd45604 12 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device snd_page_alloc 7816 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm a_intel 324248 2 snd_pcm62596 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_hda_intel snd45604 12 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device snd_page_alloc 7816 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm so it looks as though the correct module is loaded. I tried reconfiguring the sound card with alsaconf, which didn't fix the problem, although it reported a successful status. Compiling ALSA from alsa-source (using module-assistant) and manually loading the modules didn't fix anything either (so maybe not an ALSA problem?). dpkg unable to write to /var/lib/dpkg/status, /var partition full
Hello there, I booted up my system this morning and tried to install something with aptitude, only to get the error message: W: Could not lock the cache file. Opening in read-only mode; any changes you make to the states of packages will NOT be preserved! E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. So, I tried running dpkg --configure -a, which gave me: dpkg: failed to write status record about `vlc-nox' to `/var/lib/dpkg/status': No space left on device I ran df, and I found that my /var partition is entirely full (1.9 GB of 1.9 GB). I don't know why - last night I ran 'aptitude safe-upgrade', maybe that has something to do with it? I'm not sure how to fix this problem - I'm assuming that I should pare down some files, but I'm not sure which ones or how to prevent this from happening again. Any thoughts? No sound on a ThinkPad T61 w/ a AD1984 sound card
Hello there, I've been unable to get sound working (for more than a short while, more on that in a minute) on my ThinkPad T61, which has an Analog Devices 1984 (AD1984) sound controller. I'm currently running Debian lenny (2.6.22-3-686 kernel, alsa 1.0.15). When at first the sound didn't work, I followed the instructions at http://www.klabs.be/~fpiat/linux/debian/Lenny_on_Thinkpad_T61/#Sound; that is, to run: apt-get install module-assistant alsa-source module-assistant prepare module-assistant update module-assistant a-i alsa-source apt-get remove --purge alsa-modules-$(uname -r) invoke-rc.d alsa-utils restart and then open volume control, go to the "Switch" tab, untick and retick the speaker tab, unmute PCM, and then press the "volume up" button on the keyboard a few times (to eliminate the hardware mute, I believe). To my delight, this worked. However, when I shut down and later rebooted, nothing worked anymore. Redoing all of these steps didn't help. Bizarrely, the volume control application no longer even has the "Switch" tab, so I can't follow part of the steps anymore. I've googled around, but haven't come across anything that looked like it could resolve my problem. In some desperation I tried reinstalling lenny, and even then when I followed the above steps nothing worked. Any thoughts? If that doesn't work, you may want to run "fdisk /dev/hdd" as root to see if the disk is partitioned weird and then add the appropriate partition number to your mount command/fstab entry (hdd1, hdd2, etc.). I'm new to Debian (having just switched from Red Hat), this is a new install of Woody. An earlier message mentioned something about a ppa module but I can find no ref anywhere to that. udev isn't creating links for my cdrom and dvd-rom devices
I wanted to experiment with udev, hal, dbus and gnome-volume-manager so I installed all of the above and rebooted everything seemed cool except I no longer have a /dev/cdrom link. It appears udev didn't find my cdrom and dvdrom drives and it didn't create any links for them. Anyone else had this problem? Try one more mount command - "mount -t msdos /dev/hdd4 /mnt/zip". HTH, Jacob Yes, this is a backup disk with stuff on it. :/home/kyle# mount -t msdos /dev/hdd4 /mnt/zip mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdd4, or too many mounted file systems (could this be the IDE device where you in fact use ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?) The drive does react and sound like it tries to read the disk. I tired to new partition a different disk with fdisk but get the same thing. Having spent some time Googleing I have discovered what may be the problem (and I'm learning a lot!): vfat.o (msdos, FAT16 etc.) is NOT in /lib/modules/2.2.20-idepci/fs/ (in fact no where in the system- how I installed a clean system without it is beyond me, lots of other modules are there). I think maybe if I had version kernal version 2.2.20 of vfat I could insmod it (other versions of vfat will not fool insmod -I tried using a different version from an old RedHat system). I don't know any other way of getting around this, if that is the problem (except perhaps a kernel recompile, and I don't have time to learn how to do that right now). Debian uptime 497 days
I have two Debian severs that were installed on kernel 2.2.x and are now 2.4.17-686-smp. one has seemed to have been restarted. 09:41:45 up 2 days, 4:26, in reading http://e-zine.nluug.nl/hold.html?cid=158 the uptime returns to zero after 497 days, 2 hours, 27 minutes and 53 seconds it states that it is only a kernel 2.2.x bug, but according to http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg49872.html is it still in the debian kernel. Has it been, or will it be removed in 2.6 ? the other system is at 486 days 16 hours 36 minutes, and I expect that it will do the rollover in another 11 days. is there anything I can do so that the uptime will be retained? Both systems are running stable and are up to date on patches. Both are running on ups. Thanks alot people for whatever assistance you can give. If you don't want fast 3d the nv module in X 4.0 will suit you fine I would suggest that you try the nvidia drivers though...from www.nvidia.com or apt-get nvidia-kernel-src nvidia-glx-src from unstable Once compiled and installed I get 3d perfromance on par with windows My problem (discussed below) was that I was using gcc-3.0 when compiling nvidia's drivers..when my kernel was compilied with 2.95 if you use the same compiler for both you should be good... Nvidia told me that newer versions of the driver will detect this so people won't go through what I went through.. As to X 4.0... I don't know if they work with X4.0 might have to upgrade to 4.1 ... Forwarding X apps
What does one have to do to enable X apps to be forwarded to my machine? For two machine named debian and firewall respectively, I want to forward a display from fireall to debian on debian: xhost + firewall on firewall export DISPLAY=debian:0 I try and run any program and I get 'cannot open DISPLAY' so my first thought was that I didn't have the correct ports open... so I did an nmap localhost and sure enough Port State Service 21/tcp openftp 22/tcp openssh 515/tcpopenprinter are the only ports open on my machine, I uncommented the x11 services from my /etc/services restarted xinetd... I didn't think it would work but it felt good to try... I assume that you have to add an /etc/xinetd.conf entry for x11 but I can't find one.. or is there something else I have to do...

I've uninstalled reinstalled all of the above browsers, tried as different users, moved my .netscape .mozilla etc directories out of the way... it's driving my nuts... I remember that I used to be able to view them... a couple of months ago ... Can anyone help me out? Kyle
Libranet, Stormix, Progeny
After much effort, I have totally failed on my efforts to install Debian, but I would still like to run it. (My linux partition is past sector 1023, and it won't make a boot floppy. I sort of managed to get around this by using the Grub install that RedHat did, since it pointed to the correct partition, but then Potato wouldn't recognize my cdrom drive to complete installation) So, my question is this: if I were to install one of the debian-based distros (it doesn't matter which), would it be easy to upgrade to debian with apt? If so, how would I go about it? Thanks, Kyle

pppoe on a new install?
Has anyone had any success setting up Debian on a system that connects to the net using DSL via PPPoE? The .deb packages appear to be missing the configuration scripts and documentation. The Roaring Penguin site only has information on the latest version, version 3.0, which depends on libc6 2.2.2 or greater (and is currently part of Woody). This, of course, has a lengthy dependency chain, breaking Potato completely. Unfortunately, I can't upgrade to Woody, because I can't connect to the net with Debian yet. Finally, downloading Woody under Win98 doesn't work, because c:\dists\woody\main\binary-i386\Release gets read as dists/woody/main/binary~1/Release Oy. So I'm having trouble. There must be some simple solution I'm missing, anybody know what it is? Thanks! Cheers, -Kyle

Lots of problems: libc6, RAM not recognised etc.
Hello all:: I have just installed debian on a nice 'n fast i686 computer but have had lots of problems getting the system working. If anyone knows a solution to any of these I would very much appreciate the mailing of said solution to me. 1) RAM not recognised. I have 256mb of ram, but only 64mb are being recognised. I have a MEM=256M line in lilo.conf (this worked in mandrake) but it isn't working here. How can I get it all to be seen?? 2) Libc6 (& liblcms & libmng) I have installed kde2 , but to do this I needed to install libc6 2.2... instead of 2.1.3 . I think it broke my compiler (well it doesn't work) and when I tried to install libc6-dev it said it needed the older version, but liblcms and libmng need the newer one. I don't know how to get out of this, or to get gcc working for that matter. Have already reinstalled gcc. Configure scripts say I am missing 'makeinfo'. 3) Sound n printer Any tools in debian to set up sound or printer? Otherwise I'm off to manpages and the wonderful world of emacs.. IP masquerading
I was reading the IP masq how-to and it shows how to setup ipchains in a rc.firewall file. From what I gather, debian uses a different boot system. How would I make the rc.firewall for a debian system? I am new to debian, I am used to using redhat.
Network routes
I have just started using Debian in something other than a simple network. I'm looking for what file and syntax I should put entries for static routes. I'm used to RedHat and things seem to be different in Debian. Most of the docs I've seen while researching this refer to putting things in the /etc/init.d/network script. This doesn't seem like a good idea as it would get overwritten during an upgrade and it also doesn't seem to be supported anymore as the script looks totally different? Do I put this in /etc/network/interfaces or what? An example of syntax would also be helpful. Thanks. -Kyle __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! GPM sucks. I find the best solution to this problem is '# rm /etc/rc*.d/*gpm' and 'kill -15 gpm_pid'. LILO and dos partitions
I'm installing Debian over what was formerly a Slackware partition (It's been reformatted, thank goodness) and I'm stumped as to how I'm supposed to get LILO to work with my dos partition. Right now, my /etc/lilo.conf is: compact boot=/dev/hda1 vga=normal delay=20 image=/vmlinuz label=linux root=/dev/hda2 read-only other=/dev/hda1 label=dos table=/dev/hda loader=/boot/any_d.b I've tried chain.b for the dos partition, and chain.b with all the extra junk in the 0.20 documentation (Is anyone working on updating the lilo deb file to 0.20?). Whever I attempt to boot the dos partition, I get a screen filled with repetitions of "01 ". Linux boots fine, and, using an dos boot disk, I can find the dos file system. Linux cannot find it; it says that it can't find a valid MSDOS filesystem. On a related note, WTF is that "1FA:" thingy that I got when I tried to reboot Debian for the first time? It didn't want to do anything. I eventually rebooted and ran lilo, after which it worked fine unless I held down shift early in the boot sequence (in which case I got the "1FA:" thing for a moment, and then it went into LILO). -- Kyle R.
