The home directory contains not only "personal data" but configuration
directories for all your apps.

I long ago settled on a middle-of-the-road solution--I have a partition
mounted on /home/ntrfug/files which contains all my "data" such as
email, photos, documents, non-distribution software, bank statements,
etc. I've been doing this for ~20 years and I still like it. I can
reinstall nuking the home directory to take advantage of updated
configurations but still keep my word processing documents, email, and
general umm, stuff.

Claws-mail "Get mail" opens full-page

2018-07-03 Thread ntrfug
I've been using claws-mail since well before it was claws-mail (back in
the sylpheed days).

When I checked for new mail or opened dialogs they opened in
the reduced size I specified, and this size was preserved when I exited
the program.

I upgraded to stretch a couple of months ago, and to buster just last
night. Since the stretch upgrade claws-mail dialogs opened in
maximum size.v

If I catch "Get mail" before it's finished, I can reduce the dialog to
a business-card-sized window, and that works for the current session,
but if I exit the program the dialogs return to full size whenever I
re-start.

How can I specify and save a reduced size for the get-mail dialog?

Re: Very light "private" cloud

2018-05-29 Thread ntrfug
I started using OwnCloud three years ago, in order to avoid the i cloud.

I noticed especially in the last upgrade that it has become much easier
and more straightforward.

I can't imagine a cloud that doesn't use a database, though there is
probably a solution that won't involve mySQL.

More than 20 years ago I began saving personal files to a different partition
than the OS.

I've used this system for Windows (when I started) and for more flavors of
Linux than I can remember. I did this so I could wipe the root partition and
reinstall without destroying my personal files.

I call it "files" and mount it on /home/ntrfug/Documents at boot.

I also have a 100 Gb partition for "music", mounted at boot to
/home/ntrfug/Music.

Everything else goes on single 22 Gb partition, now labeled "Stretch" (49%
occupied).

I use KDE with a fair but not extensive portfolio of software, but which
include LyX, which requires LaTeX and TeX (that's a lot of dependency).

I backup the root partition before I reinstall, and after installation move
settings for individual applications to the new home directory.

For example I started using sylpheed for email when accounts and preferences
were saved in regular text files. Later it morphed to claws-mail and migrated
to xml preferences that I could not re-create to save my life. Fortunately I
just moved the /home/ntrfug/.config/claws-mail directory to my new system and
it came up with all my preferences and accounts the first time I started. (I
save my email folders in /home/ntrfug/files/Mail).

I use VirtualBox, and virtual machines live in /home/ntrfug/files/virtualbox.

Using NVIDIA drivers in Jessie

2015-01-08 Thread ntrfug
Short version: they worked for me for just under 1 day. After that the
system won't boot--at the point the NVIDIA logo should be displayed the
system hangs on a black screen, and the only thing I can do is power
off.

I can start in single-user mode, supply the root password and startx as
root. From the root prompt I can also start kdm. I can't login,
though--I get System is booting up -- see pam_login(8).

Since the graphics driver works for root but not for my normal user
this seems like a permissions problem, but I can't understand why for
almost a day I could boot the system normally and log in as a user.

I've collected some logs that might help a developer; I hesitate to
post them because they're REALLY long.

Can someone point me to the right person to send them to, or a good
place to post them?

Kevin

No sound in Jessie KDE

2015-01-07 Thread ntrfug
When I had Windows 7 on my machine (Lenovo W53) the sound volume was
high enough that I usually set it at ~50%. With Jessie 100% volume
seemed barely adequate, and I was experimenting to see if I could get
more.

In KDE-System Settings-Multimedia I played with the settings; the
result was that no available playback devices are shown. Pressing the
Reset and Defaults buttons at the bottom of the screen had no
effect.

How can I get back to the defaults?

I backup my system by exchanging the CD/DVD device for a second hard

I thought I would be organized, and created entries in /etc/fstab for
each of those second-hard-drive partitions; the first was NTFS. I, umm,

Whenever I inserted any removable device, the system saw it

When I commented out the offending lines in fstab I was able to mount
removable devices normally.

There is nothing wrong with your English or those definitions,

frequently observed that people for whom English is a second

There IS something wrong with his English, and several have tried to

the explanation offered by native speakers.

It's pretty arrogant to suggest that native speakers of another

Unable to mount external USB devices -- Wheezy KDE

2012-03-31 Thread ntrfug
For years I have been able to use external hard drives and thumb drives
on my systems, but not since I installed Wheezy.

I get the following on inserting a SanDisk thumb drive:

The requested operation has failed.: Error mounting: mount exited with
exit code 1: helper failed with: Unprivileged user can not mount NTFS
block devices using the external FUSE library. Either mount the volume
as root, or rebuild NTFS-3G with integrated FUSE support and make it
setuid root. Please see more information at
http://tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g-faq/#unprivileged;

I certainly hope there is another solution besides rebuilding packages.
I want to be able to read/write/transfer files as my normal user.

In K-Settings-System Settings-Removable Devices I checked Enable
automatic mounting of removable media, Mount all removable media at
login, and Automatically mount removable media when attached.

In the Attached Devices list of that dialog, SanDisk U3 Cruzer Micro
is listed and Automount on attach is checked.

The problem is not limited to devices with NTFS file systems; I can't
mount ext2 or ReiserFS devices either.

to get woody going on a couple different boxen - most recently a Dell
 Latitude laptop.

Have you tried the Linux on Laptops web site?

http://www.linux-laptop.net/

It's very likely someone has already gone through what you're doing now, and has
posted the answers to your questions. Perhaps another distribution was installed
instead of Debian, but details like the XFree configuration, mouse, sound, PCMCIA etc.
will be either the same or similar enough that you'll know how to do the right thing.

If you're new to Debian I recommend Steve Hunger's Debian GNU/Linux Bible as a good
general dead-tree reference.

For online help install either one of the packages dwww or dhelp. It organizes
documentation into a local web site, so you can stroll through it with your favorite
web browser.

kind of mouse you have, but i'd guess ps2. when it asks you about
repeating, tell it you want to repeat raw (w/out quotes).

That must work for a lot of people, since I see it repeated so often here.

I have been unable to make gpm work on any of my systems (five of them, including two
laptops) using the above instructions, magic incantations, or sailor words. :)

I just get exorcise gpm from my systems.

I'd give Knoppix a shot on that laptop.

That's an excellent idea. Check out the configuration files and see how Klaus makes it
work.

Or, just install Knoppix on the hard drive -- it is a Debian distribution. Here are a
couple of articles describing that process:

First, read man interfaces. It has examples, and one of them will likely fit your
situation. Then change /etc/network/interfaces.

I'm guessing you'll need a couple of lines like:

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

In addition, find out what kernel module your network adapter uses. Look in
/etc/modules; if the module isn't listed, add it.

What would like a command to apt-get look like if I wanted to download a

To *download* it, use apt-get -d install package_name.

To download *and install* it, use apt-get install package_name.

I found this in man apt-get. :)

 Should I uninstall lpd?

Yes, you should.

The packages you need are:

cupsys
cupsys-bsd
cupsys-client

cupsys-bsd allows you to use lp commands with CUPS, so you can tell applications to
lp -Pprintername to print.
