Hello, Is it possible to find out what kind of PCI/PCI-X/AGP device is installed on a PC? (CentOS/RedHat bases boxes). Radeon HD 3850 / RV670 AGP: no firmware loaded / slow
Hi, I am struggling with my Radeon HD 3850 / RV670 AGP ever since I have upgraded to XOrg 7.5 which is (still) not supported by the proprietary driver. The OSS Radeon driver is *really* slow. Switching between workplaces or (full screen) applications sometimes take more than 30 seconds. More applications lead to more seconds. I have tried every suggestion on the internet that I could find, saw all kind of video effects, including no video at all, but nothing worked so far. There are several thing that I notice: 1. In several postings I saw the mentioning of the need to load firmware. I have installed all the firmware-linux packages, including the non-free which contains the relevant Radeon firmware. I see some firmware getting loaded (eg for my Broadcom NIC) but no attempt is made to load the firmware for my Radeon card. I have fiddled with radeon.modeset=1/0 settings, both on /etc/modprobe.d conf files, as manually loading/unloading the radeon modules, but none of the attempts leaded to a working system. Should the firmware get loaded, and if so, how should I do that? 2. In the XOrg.0.log it says: (EE) RADEON(0): [agp] Could not bind (EE) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP failed to initialize. Disabling the DRI. (II) RADEON(0): [agp] You may want to make sure the agpgart kernel module is loaded before the radeon kernel module. The agpgart kernel module is compiled in ( a change from 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 which used a module, whereas 2.6.32-3-amd has it compiled in). But disabling DRI disables the acceleration I believe. Is that correct? 3. I have tried both the radeon and radeonhd driver without any success. Both drivers appear to e working. Is it correct that the radeon driver is preferred for my card? No, Radeon has for some time fully supported 2d and 3d for r100 to r500; that is Radeon 7000 through 9000 series and x300 through x1950. Radeon HD 2xxx through Radeon HD 4xxx (r600 - r700) have more limited support at this time. All the specs for these have been released, but even with specs it takes time to make the drivers. For really old cards - Rage and Mach - documents have not been freely released, but 3d support was developed with docs provided to specific developers under NDA (predating AMD's 100% open attitude). radeonhd: no acceleration DRI / AGP???
Hi, Does the radeonhs driver support acceleration? I have no performance what so ever with the radeonhd driver with my RV670 AGP Radeon HD 3850 card. (II) RADEONHD(0): [agp] You may want to make sure the agpgart kernel module And further in the file: (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI2 capable (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable But the agpart is loaded: panoramix:/home/jkr# lsmod | grep agp amd64_agp 6814 0 agpgart24733 3 ttm,drm,amd64_agp Does anyone has any idea of how to get (hardware) acceleration working? Hi Paul, I have the Gigabyte Nvidia 7600 GS silent card, and it works well enough with the latest nvidia driver (9755) under amd64. I get a few quirks here and there but nothing irritating (for me at least). My system has on occasion frozen solid (even to the outside network), but no log gives a hint as to its origins. Don't know if that is the video driver or not. I don't know how to track it with no errors messages. Write to ATI. Tell them that unless they release F/OSS linux drivers--and soon--they've lost a customer to someone who does. Then call them and tell them the same thing. Then you can, if you really need DRI, look into the proprietary fglrx driver and module. kernel module building and the non-free repository and needed here. make-kpkg or module-assistant work well for this, module-assistant is probably easier to jump into. But the module will taint the kernel. And, if you're using unstable, the driver will require you to mess with holds of x.org and/or use a (further) illegal hack. AGP & DRI on a Radeon Xpress 1150
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Howdy List, I'm trying to setup Debian Etch on a new Dell Inspiron 1501. X is working great so far, except that I cannot get DRI enabled. I can modprobe radeon and tell the xorg.conf to use the radeon driver, but glxinfo still reports no DRI. Looking in the xorg.log file it says screen :0 is not dri capable. So I have tried adjusting refresh rates and resolution and everything but still the same error message. Finally I realized that it is not creating a /dev/dri/card0 device. I am assuming 'it' would be udev, in this instance, probably because there is no '*_agp' module loaded. So I tried loading each of the *_agp modules present in the 2.6.18-4-amd64 kernel but still no /dev/dri/card0. I have seen others say they got DRI working on their 1501, so I am hoping someone knows what I need to do or maybe another 1501 user can share some config details with me. Any hints or tips? You really need to tell us a little more about your system, I assume you have a SIS chipset and what to know if you can switch graphics cards to get a higher resolution. A lot of that depends on the monitor, lcd, or display you are using. Some displays cannot support that resolution. Search with google, for your display and see it if supports that resolution. Does your motherboard support an AGP slot, some intergrated video motherboards do not support, or have a AGP slot. It would be kind of silly to buy a card that can not be used on your board. If your talking about playing higher resolutions such as HD content in 1080i or 1080p playback, you might not have the cpu power to do that. It's also a good chance if you have a vga monitor that it will not support the higher resolutions that HD will demand. I would suggest you post your system spec's and then we can get a better idea of what is required. Gnu_Raiz -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 4X AGP / XFree86 4.3.0 / ATI Linux Driver: Colour Depth Problems
Hello, I'm running on my HP nc6000 (with an external hp L1925 TFT-Monitor) Debian GNU/Linux 3.0r3, XFree86 4.3.0, the prorpietary ATI Radeon Linux driver, and as display manager GDM; XFree is configured to use 1280x1024 24bpp externally, and 1024x768 24bpp internally. After booting the system GDM appears just as intended (and configured) to, but after approximately two seconds the systems reduces the color depth from 24bpp to 8bpp, which admittedly looks very crude (or artish, at least from a certain point of view ;-). When I login an run fgl_glgears, the color depth is restored to 24bpp. Any ideas how to prevent the depth reduction and keep the original, configured depth? Well there's really no reason for most users to see the low and medium priority questions. That's why they are lower priorities. It would make more sense to run dpkg-reconfigure --priority=high xserver-xfree86 instead. -- For every sprinkle I find, I shall kill you! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Hello everyone, I'm in trouble in the installation of the x-server. I have an ATI Radeon 9600, so I installed the driver radeon as suggested in the HOWTO. When I run dpkg-reconfigure --priority=low xserver-xfree86 I'm asked of the PCI bus ID. Now my videocard is on AGP, so what should I do? I've been fully satisfied with both a 9200 and a 9200SE (one's a Diamond board and the other's a Gigabyte). Xine complains a little bit about the frame rate being too low (2 warnings for one 109 minute dvd), but still looks great to me. On the other hand, note that I'm not exercising them that hard; 15" lcd on the SE and 17" lcd on the other, both using 1024x768 and 16 - 32bpp settings. Also, at least the SE does not seem capable of doing flightgear (www.flightgear.org), but I don't play games much at all. The plain 9200 might get exercised with Tuxracer a bit, but that's about it. All that to say, I may not be the best one to speak, depending on what you want to do with it. Using only the open source drivers in Debian Sarge, I typically see ~1850 fps in glxgears on the SE and ~2600 on the 9200. Tuxracer shows up to 115fps on the SE and 200 on the 9200 (running full screen). The computer with the SE is a 1Ghz Athlon and the 9200 is a XP2600+, both using motherboards with Nvidia Nforce2 chipsets. Radeon 9200 & AGP 8x
Hello list, I've managed to get a Radeon 9200SE working on one computer, but it uses agp 4x. On another computer I've got a plain Radeon 9200 that appears to be agp 8x only installed in a motherboard with the Nvidia Nforce2 chipset (which supports agp 8x). However, I can't seem to get the radeon driver in x to support it properly. I'm running the latest updates in Sarge, with a 2.6.7-1-k7 kernel. I've modprobed agpgart and nvidia_agp, which according to the logs recognize the agp bridge on the motherboard. With /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 set to use the radeon driver, however, I still see glxinfo saying there is no direct rendering enabled and glxgears reports the expected pitiful performance of ~250 fps. I have also tried specifying a chipId in the Device section for the video card, but still to no avail. Does anyone have any hints how I might get this to work? Now, if you really want to get graphics hardware acceleration that's not enough either, you also have to load the module for your graphics chip (radeon in my case; the one bellow Direct Rendering Manager in the character devices, not the framebuffer driver), but set if *after* intel-agp. I've recently upgraded from 2.4.25 to 2.6.4 via a source from kernel.org. I'm having the somewhat common problem with my x server. The message is: "Unable to open /dev/agpgart (No such file or directory.) AGP GART is not available..." After 10 kenel recompiles and countless searches, no progress so far. If I try AGP ="8" in /etc/XF86Config-4 it says that the mode is invalid. Is it really true that no higher than AGP 4X is supported, not even in the latest Xfree86 4.4? AGP speed with Xfree86
Hello! I'm using the latest Xfree86 4.4 here and it seems like it doesn't support higher than AGP 4. If I try AGP 8 I get an error message saying it's invalid. Is this the fault of Xfree86 or is it my kernel which doesn't support AGP 8? I have a 2.6.2 kernel in my system with AGP support. Just get out of X, manually unload the radeon module, make sure agpgart is loaded, then start X back up (it will automatically load the radeon module again), and see what happens. Help with AGP and 3D acceleration for Radeon 7000
Hi all, may I request your help? I've recently bought a Radeon 7000 graphics card for my home PC running Debian testing. (XFree86 version is 4.2.1.1.) Despite having tried several suggestions (I've specified the "radeon" driver in place of "ati" in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, loaded the "radeon" kernel module, and played with a couple of other settings), I haven't been able to get 3D acceleration to work. These are the relevant lines from the output of glxinfo, as I understand: direct rendering: No OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect while glxgears reports an awful 80 FPS. I guess that these lines from /var/log/XFree86.0.log identify the problem: (EE) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP not available (EE) RADEON(0): [drm] failed to remove DRM signal handler I tried loading the "agpgart" kernel module, but to no effect. The full /var/log/XFree86.0.log, /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, and the output of glxinfo are attached. I'd be very grateful if anybody could help me. Please Cc: me since I'm not subscribed to this list. P.S. a less critical problem: as reported in /var/log/XFree86.0.log, XFree86 estimates my monitor resolution to be 75 DPI, while it's actually 96 DPI (15" screen at 1024x768). Gnome gets that correctly, as I could see with gconf-editor, but then I get inconsistent font sizes between the Gnome panel and applications (and sometimes, even between instances of the same app!). I was only able to cure the inconsistency by setting the gconf resolution to 75 too, but then, 13-points fonts look like they were 10-points. Is there a way to force XFree86 to use the correct resolution? Many thanks in advance. AMD/AGP bug
I have chatted with people at AMD about the AGP bug and they contend that it is fixed in the in 2.4.20 kernel. Is this true in the debian 2.4.20 kernel sources package? My machine still hangs randomly, and when it does, XFree86 is running at ~98% cpu. Art Edwards -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? At least they did not when I looked two weeks ago. I had to use the FireGL drivers from Schneider, which "sort of" worked (garbled OpenGL and no video overlay support) and lacked proper documentation for the corner cases (namely dualhead). The OpenGL bug has been fixed in the meantime AFAIK. Still, it's a bit frustrating when you compare that to the level of support that nVidia provides. > agp gart stuff is tricky to get working ... fun or annoying stuff If your chipset is supported, it's not tricky at all. where is the place to enable agp gart in kernel 2.4.21?
I need to enable agp gart for my radeon 128 mb ati card, according to the instructions in the xfree site. However, I can't find the place in the compilation of my image. I am using kernel-package and kernel-source from testing, in the "make menuconfig" step. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? VIA & AGP & mystery
Hi folk. I have motheboard on via chipset (Via Apollo Pro 133Z). And I have AGP video card. My kernel is 2.4.20. I compile it with support agp, but I cacnnot use agp - this is from dmesg command: Linux agpgart interface v0.99 (c) Jeff Hartmann agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 321M agpgart: Unsupported Via chipset (device id: 0605), you might want to try agp_try_unsupported=1. agpgart: no supported devices found. But I try KNOPPIX with 2.4.20 kernel and I have other things with agp: Linux agpgart interface v0.99 (c) Jeff Hartmann agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 321M agpgart: Trying generic Via routines for device id: 0605 agpgart: AGP aperture is 64M @ 0xf800 How can I do support of agp for me? I try compile kernel with the same option of agp support how this do in KNOPPIX. Thanx. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble?
