I have since discovered the problem seemingly only affects Google-Chrome in Youtube. Firefox in youtube has sound and VLC plays mp3's fine. Just a Chrome problem ?? Audio problems [With Squeeze & KDE]
Hi there! I have installed Debian Squeeze & KDE Desktop. The audio devices never worked. I'm not sure if It's a Debian problem or a KDE problem. I has installed OpenSUSE with GNOME before and worked ok. If I try to up volume with volume up key, appears like work it, but don't show change in volume (I tried volume down, too...same resulted). If I tried to run in root aplayer, I receive the next error message: ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave > aplay: main:654: audio open error: No such file or directory I run alsa-info script, and I get this output: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=5e72aeef80770fb1e93a5fc291f1cd0163f14434 Greetings, J Paulo

I believe that signals from the microphone pass directly to the speakers even when the applications are not working. I would suggest you try these: 1. Run "alsaconf" and check that you have configured the correct sound card (eg not any sound built into the motherboard). 2. Run "speaker-test" from the alsa-utils package. If you hear the pink noise hiss, alsa is driving the correct card. 3. Some OSS apps have given trouble recently. (Alsa should be able to deal with OSS apps automatically.) Check that /dev/dsp exists using "file /dev/dsp". If it does not exist, create it using "modprobe snd_pcm_oss" and try again. If this works, try the permanent fix from the recent thread "Some ALSA apps stopped working"[1]. Audio problems
I'm running Debian Testing - up to date as of yesterday and I'm using Kmix. Since I have updated my kernel to 2.6.22 from kernel.org I am having audio problems with the on-board Intel HDA system. Sound output through the speakers is fine but sound from the microphone is dreadful. The only slider which will control the microphone volume is labelled 'Digital' and the voice volume level is reasonable with the slider at about 55% but there is a very loud background hum/hiss which makes the result unacceptable and I haven't found a way of improving that. I have to have the first 'Capture' slider set on but the slider position makes no difference and can be set at the bottom. As I couldn't make things any better with the HDA I thought that I'd put a SoundBlaster Live adapter I had into the computer as well. The results from that seem even stranger. If I tap the microphone I can hear the sound from the speakers but using Timidity to play a music file produces nothing from the speakers and using Skype gives a deafening silence too. I can't help feeling that I've forgotten something very obvious but not being anything approaching an audio expert I'm stumped. Any miracles gratefully accepted. -- Barry Samuels http://www.beenthere-donethat.org.uk The Unofficial Guide to Great Britain

Try to run alsaconf when your camera is connected and see if it will set up the modules to load correctly regardless of whether your cam is connected or not. On the other hand, you may also try your post on the debian amd list and also search this list for your related problem (eg. alsa, sound, etc). Sound works; modules load at boottime. nVidia graphics driver 7174 works. I've had a few odd X crashes, but I've also had X crashes with all of the 2.6 kernels. Kernel 2.6.14-2-k7 and Nforce2 audio problems
Howdy list, I recently apt-get installed linux-image-2.6.14-2-k7 so that I would have a recent enough kernel for udev (running Debian Unstable). Yes, I'm just now trying to take the plunge and upgrade to udev. But before I could start learning udev, I found the 2.6.14 kernel isn't loading the drivers for my sound card properly. The sound card is part of the motherboard, which uses an Nforce2 chipset. In the 2.6.9 kernel I had been running, the Nforce2 audio is supported by the snd_intel8x0 module. But when hotplug tries to load the snd_intel8x0 module at boot time or I try to modprobe it manually, I get these errors[0]. It doesn't seem to make a difference whether I have other snd_ modules loaded or not (such as snd_ac97_codec). Does anyone have any suggestions for a way to fix this, or is this a bug in the 2.6.14 kernel? Audio problems related to Java VM
After I installed Java ( filename: j2re-1_4_2_05-linux-i586.bin) I've had problems with audio in some progs. XMMS (audioplayer), gaim (chattingprog), totem(movieplayer) and mplayer(movieplayer) fails to play any sound at all. All these programs workes before installing java. When running XMMS I get this error message: "Couldn't open audio: Please chech that: Your soundcard is configured properly You have the correct output plugin selected No other program is blocking the soundcard" I wrote "fuser /dev/dsp" in terminal and got nothing as a result. Using apt I found a package called sndconfig. Running this tellsme that my sound configurations is OK and sndconfig playes a sound perfectly. I've tried google, but I'm not able to find any clues. Does anyone have an idea what I could do? Regards Vegard, Norway. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Dennis, Exactly how do I add myself to the audio group? I feel rather embarrased that I have to ask this question after using UNIX for three years but I never had to admin stuff like this at school. I also fear that you are correct about this problem. When I run KDE as root, it works fine. bp From: Dennis Stosberg <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: audio problems Date: Mon, 2 Dec 2002 23:14:13 +0100 Am 02.12.2002 um 14:49 schrieb Bruce Park: > ** warning **: oss_open() failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): > Permission denied. > > As for the other window, it's just tellin me to check that everything is > correct. KDE uses a sound daemon named "artsd", which opens the dsp device when you start KDE. Every program that wants to play sound has to use this sound server. You have several options (in order of preference): - Use the arts output plugin for xmms - Use the artsdsp command - Kill artsd Regards, Dennis << attach3 >> _ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. Hello all, I have a sound blaster live value card and it seems that I cannot get this to work. I have this driver 'EMU10k1' for this card. When I try to play an mp3 using xmms, at the prompt it tells me that it cannot access /dev/dsp. Then xmms pops open a window with three things basically asking me it cannot access sound, to check if I'm blocking the audio device. I'm running KDE 2.2 and have the appropriate audio library already in place. Can anyone help me figure out this mistery? bp _ Tired of spam? It is "better" to add the user to the 'audio' group instead (edit /etc/group file, or use 'adduser userid audio').
