Quoting from the alsa-info output:

Hi there!

I have installed Debian Squeeze & KDE Desktop. The audio devices never
worked. I'm not sure if It's a Debian problem or a KDE problem. I has
installed OpenSUSE with GNOME before and worked ok.

If I try to up volume with volume up key, appears like work it, but don't
show change in volume (I tried volume down, too...same resulted). If I
tried to run in root aplayer, I receive the next error message:

ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave

I run alsa-info script, and I get this output:

I believe that signals from the microphone pass directly to the speakers even
when the applications are not working. I would suggest you try these:

1. Run "alsaconf" and check that you have configured the correct sound card (eg
not any sound built into the motherboard).

2. Run "speaker-test" from the alsa-utils package. If you hear the pink noise
hiss, alsa is driving the correct card.

3. Some OSS apps have given trouble recently. (Alsa should be able to deal with
OSS apps automatically.) Check that /dev/dsp exists using "file /dev/dsp". If it
does not exist, create it using "modprobe snd_pcm_oss" and try again. If this
works, try the permanent fix from the recent thread "Some ALSA apps stopped
working"[1].

Audio problems

2007-07-10 Thread Barry Samuels
I'm running Debian Testing - up to date as of yesterday and I'm using
Kmix.

Since I have updated my kernel to 2.6.22 from kernel.org I am having
audio problems with the on-board Intel HDA system.

Sound output through the speakers is fine but sound from the microphone
is dreadful. The only slider which will control the microphone volume
is labelled 'Digital' and the voice volume level is reasonable with the
slider at about 55% but there is a very loud background hum/hiss which
makes the result unacceptable and I haven't found a way of improving
that. I have to have the first 'Capture' slider set on but the slider
position makes no difference and can be set at the bottom.

As I couldn't make things any better with the HDA I thought that I'd
put a SoundBlaster Live adapter I had into the computer as well.

The results from that seem even stranger. If I tap the microphone I can
hear the sound from the speakers but using Timidity to play a music
file produces nothing from the speakers and using Skype gives a
deafening silence too.

I can't help feeling that I've forgotten something very obvious but not
being anything approaching an audio expert I'm stumped. Any
miracles gratefully accepted.

John:

I'm no expert, but you may have to use something like 'alsaconf' and
look into your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file. Try to run alsaconf when
your camera is connected and see if it will set up the modules to load
correctly regardless of whether your cam is connected or not.

On the other hand, you may also try your post on the debian amd list and
also search this list for your related problem (eg. alsa, sound, etc).

Thanks, Mitchell and Jerome. I dropped back to a 2.6.12-1-k7 kernel and
sound is working properly again. Now back to my regularly scheduled
programming... learning udev.

Thanks again!

My mother board uses an nForce2 chipset and nVidia GeForce 4 MX
graphics. I am using udev .076 with a 2.6.14-1-k7 kernel installed from
linux-image-2.6.14-1-k7_2.6.14-2_i386.deb.

Sound works; modules load at boottime. nVidia graphics driver 7174
works. I've had a few odd X crashes, but I've also had X
crashes with all of the 2.6 kernels.

If you want to try the earlier kernel, you can download it from
http://snapshot.debian.net/

I agree. I had the same problem. I am using a asus k8v-x motherboard
Specifications: CPU 754-pin socket supports AMD Sempron CPU (754-pin socket)
or Athlon 64 processor. System Bus 800MHz. Chipset VIA K8T800, VIA VT8237.
Memory 3 x 184-pin DIMM Sockets support max. 3GB un-buffered ECC and non-ECC
PC3200/PC2700 / PC2100 DDR SDRAM memory. Expansion Slots 1 x AGP 8X, 5x PCI.
Storage South Bridge, 2 x ATA133, 2 x SATA, RAID0, RAID1. Audio ADI AD1980,
6-channel CODEC, S/PDIF out interface.

I had the same kernel message.

I switched back to the linux-image-2.6.12-1-k7 which works fine.

There must be something wrong with this kernel.

It also gave me video problems. I use a xfx nvidia 6600gt video card.
It does not work with the proprietary nvidia drivers .7667. the nvidia modules
compile but give all sorts of errors and hang my X

I am running sid.

Kernel 2.6.14-2-k7 and Nforce2 audio problems

2005-12-10 Thread Jacob S
Howdy list,

I recently apt-get installed linux-image-2.6.14-2-k7 so that I would
have a recent enough kernel for udev (running Debian Unstable). Yes,
I'm just now trying to take the plunge and upgrade to udev. But before
I could start learning udev, I found the 2.6.14 kernel isn't loading
the drivers for my sound card properly.

The sound card is part of the motherboard, which uses an Nforce2
chipset. In the 2.6.9 kernel I had been running, the Nforce2 audio is
supported by the snd_intel8x0 module. But when hotplug tries to load
the snd_intel8x0 module at boot time or I try to modprobe it manually,
I get these errors[0]. It doesn't seem to make a difference whether I
have other snd_ modules loaded or not (such as snd_ac97_codec).

Does anyone have any suggestions for a way to fix this, or is this a
bug in the 2.6.14 kernel?

TIA,
Jacob

Audio problems related to Java VM

2004-10-31 Thread Vegard Lundby Rekaa
After I installed Java ( filename: j2re-1_4_2_05-linux-i586.bin) I've had
problems with audio in some progs. XMMS (audioplayer), gaim
(chattingprog), totem(movieplayer) and mplayer(movieplayer) fails to play
any sound at all. All these programs workes before installing java. When
running XMMS I get this error message:

"Couldn't open audio:
Please chech that:
Your soundcard is configured properly
You have the correct output plugin selected
No other program is blocking the soundcard"

I wrote "fuser /dev/dsp" in terminal and got nothing as a result.

Using apt I found a package called sndconfig. Running this tellsme that my
sound configurations is OK and sndconfig playes a sound perfectly.

I've tried google, but I'm not able to find any clues.

Does anyone have an idea what I could do?

Regards Vegard, Norway.

You could try ALSA and the snd-intel8x0 driver. What kernel and Debian
version do you use? Maybe the kernel OSS driver is too old, and a newer
kernel would work.

Windows XP installs on this same pc with Realtek AC97 drivers.

What do you think?

Loading the driver for the ac97 codec is not enough, you also need the
actual driver for your sound chip. Run lspci to find out which one you
have.

Audio problems on AC97 audio on Shuttle SB65G2 Woody install

2004-10-27 Thread Marion Hall
I'm not getting working audio on this computer.

When I modprobe ac97, it just goes to a blank line.
I installed Debian with bf24 option and added alias sound-slot-0 ac97 to
modules.conf and ran update-modules

I'm testing this with ogg123 -d oss songname.ogg and it gives a Cannot open
oss device error.

Any ideas

adduser [options] user group
so as root user you would do:
adduser bpark audio
then you have to log all the way out and log in for it to take effect -
you can see it by typing
$groups
or
view /etc/group
and look for "audio" group - see if your name is in the list.

Exactly how do I add myself to the audio group? I feel rather embarrased

As Micheal said, check the permissions on /dev/dsp. It should be

It seems that you are using xmms with libOSS.so as output plugin.

Did you installed the package xmmsarts? If not, please install it
an set the aRts-Driver as output plugin.

Dennis,

I killed the arts daemon and I'm still getting erros. These are the two

libkimod.so.2: cannot open object file: No such file or directory.
Then when I hit the play button:

** warning **: oss_open() failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): Permission

As for the other window, it's just tellin me to check that everything is
correct. I'm currenty using OSS driver or esound. They both don't work. What
else should I check out?

KDE uses a sound daemon named "artsd", which opens the dsp device
when you start KDE. Every program that wants to play sound has to
use this sound server. You have several options (in order of
preference):

  - Use the arts output plugin for xmms
  - Use the artsdsp command
  - Kill artsd

Nope. It is "better" to add the user to the 'audio' group instead
(edit /etc/group file, or use 'adduser userid audio').

By default /dev/dsp permissions should look like this:

I'm no audio expert, so I don't know if this applies to /dev/dsp - but
I'd rather not have somebody I've given shell access to able to turn on
my microphone at any time and listen to what I'm saying ... or shout
obscenities at me through the speakers, for that matter (I've seen
similar things done at university)

Better just to have it available to the group, and only put certain
people in the group.

From going through this recently, here's how to fix it. I bet you are trying
to play that mp3 while logged on as a regular user. Issue the command:

adduser yourusername audio

This adds your username to the audio group which can access /dev/dsp.

hi!
I just upgrade my debian potato to r3 and my sound isn't working!

When I try to hear some mp3 file with xmms, at console I receive:
/dev/dsp : no such file.
But it is there!!!

This is my ls -l /dev/dsp* output:
lrwxrwxrwx1 root root9 Jun 19 14:58 /dev/dsp -> /dev/dsp0
crwxrwxr-x1 root audio 14, 3 Jun 19 14:57 /dev/dsp0
crwxrwxr-x1 root audio 14, 19 Jun 19 14:57 /dev/dsp1
crwxrwxr-x1 root audio 14, 35 Jun 19 14:57 /dev/dsp2
crwxrwxr-x1 root audio 14, 51 Jun 19 14:57 /dev/dsp3

I made another test with a .au file:
 cat /var/downloads/everybuddy-0.2.1beta6/sounds/Send.au > /dev/dsp
and
 cat /var/downloads/everybuddy-0.2.1beta6/sounds/Send.au > /dev/dsp0
but with both I obteined the next result:
bash: /dev/dsp0: No such device

Someone can helpme?

Ah! my sound card is OPL3 ISA, and I recompile the kernel with native support
for this, not module way.

Thanks.

Seems those kernel folks changed some ioctl requests and cdplay has
never been updated. Try cdcd instead. It's quite nice.

cd audio problems under 2.2.19?

2001-05-28 Thread Rob Mahurin
Hello,

Under kernel 2.2.16 I can play CD audio normally; however, under
2.2.19 I get

14:58 tty1 $ cdir
unknown cd - 64:30 in 6 tracks
 10:11.62 1
 15:17.00 2
  9:59.08 3
  8:19.55 4
  3:39.12 5
 17:01.40 6
14:58 tty1 $ cdplay
sr0: CDROM (ioctl) reports ILLEGAL REQUEST.
sr0: CDROM (ioctl) reports ILLEGAL REQUEST.
cdplay: ioctl cdromplaytrkind
14:58 tty1 $ cdinfo
no-status

and nothing happens. Is this a known issue or have I done something
dumb in my compile? The kernel is stock 2.2.19, patched (without
errors) from the working 2.2.16 source with the kernel.org patches and
configured with 'make oldconfig'. I did not use the Debian kernel
packages.

Thanks for any help.

Rob
