Re: Debian y Norton GHOST
RE: LILO upgrade y Norton Ghost
Norton Ghost
Has anyone used ghost with debian? I tried doing a disk to disk copy, and when I boot the new disk, all it does it scroll 09 09 09 09 across the screen... What else can I use to move my install from 1 drive to another? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Norton Ghost
Yes, but on dual-boot machines with W2K on the first partition and Debian behind that. I tried doing a disk to disk copy, and when I boot the new disk, all it does it scroll 09 09 09 09 across the screen... I've done disk-image to disk. I suspect that if you'll boot off your Debian CD with something like linux root=/dev/hda1 and then re-run lilo, this might fix the problem. I tried this and it still runs the install on the CD. How can I get around the install? I apologize in advance for the newvie questions :) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Or switch to a console with alt + F1 or crtl + alt + F1, you might have to use F2 or 4 (something similar) instead of F1. Than you can try to mount your rootpartition on /mnt and type chroot /mnt and than lilo. Probably there is an option to boot directly from the lilo-prompt your root-partition like Ken wrote. gerhard -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Norton Ghost?
Anyone used debian with norton ghost? I have a problem with lilo when I create a bootable CD image of a dual boot debian+win2k box. I thought maybe moving around the order of images in the lilo.conf (which ghost attempts to follow) would fix my issues, but apparently not. I talked to their tech support and they pretty much said we don't support debian. The current problem is a Descriptor checksum error. I would really prefer being able to clone machines AND have a working MBR rather than carry around a boot floppy. I was able to dump a debian-only image to another drive, it's something about the dual boot that makes it impossible. Any ideas are welcome. -nicole

Generally I use one as a master, push the image up to a server, then ghost it down to the other machines. I can't use multicast, because for some reason it takes down the router, and then our Network Admin has a fit because he's suddenly got 1200+ machines that are dead network-wise. I've never worked with creating bootable CDs. That Descriptor checksum error sounds familiar. I had originally tried to use LabExpert's ImageBlaster (a Ghost work-alike), and it would die about 77% into the first (Windows) partition when downloading the images. Eventually I just gave up and tried Ghost, which worked I also remember something when I first started with LabExpert that the old version we were migrating from left a hook of itself in the MBR, and I had a great deal of difficulty getting rid of it. When does the error occur? During the creation of the image, or during the replication of the image. Does it happen in a consistent spot? Sorry this isn't much help, but maybe it'll give you some hope that you can eventually make it work. Kent

Generally I use one as a master, push the image up to a server, then ghost it down to the other machines. Well, I think if it's possible, it's possible. It must be something about either my lilo configuration, my partition configuration, or the way I'm making the images. I've never worked with creating bootable CDs. All it really is is a CD with the ghost image and a bootable floppy all in one. I don't have Enterprise Ed. yet, so I am not yet running multicast. When does the error occur? During the creation of the image, or during the replication of the image. Does it happen in a consistent spot? I have created a bootable CD of a current working machine. Re: Norton Ghost?
You know, I wonder if it's a problem with the lilo 'graphical' menu. I have not tried using the plain ol' LILO: prompt. No such luck. So let's recap the Lilo errors I've had with this dual boot ghost thing: 1. lilo.conf default=windows, first image=linux-2.4.16: LI 40 40 40 40 40 40 endless 2. lilo.conf default=windows, first image=windows: LILO: Descriptor Checksum Error 3. lilo.conf default=windows, first image=windows, set to plain prompt: LI stall I am going to try moving linux to be the default and the first image. I wonder what error I'll get then. Heck at least I can document them! -nicole
Re: Mondo GNU like Norton Ghost
Have you checked out beoboot? I think there may be a free version and it can do what you want and even uses network multicast file transfer to avoid network saturation. Mondo GNU like Norton Ghost
Hi all, For those who are interested there is a package called mondo which is GNU and does the same thing a Norton Ghost, namely allows you to take a system image and use it to install other computers or backup simply by booting from a cdr created earlier. I think this should become part of debian, anyone know how I can get it included in unstable? You can download the src at: http://www.microwerks.net/~hugo/download/mondo-0.975-1.src.rpm Thanks in advance, Peter Firmstone.
