I went back through the archives and found where I had asked about getting this printer connected before, and followed those directions, but it's failing right at the outset. The hpoj documentation suggests ensuring that the USB drivers are compiled for earlier kernels, that ohci/uhci be loaded. The 2.6.8 autodetection is loading all those drivers: # lsmod usbcore 119012 6 ehci_hcd,usb_storage,usblp,ohci_hcd usbview displays the printer information just fine, as does KDE Infocenter. When I pull the cable out of one USB port and stick it in another since my laptop has 3 to choose from, usbview, Infocenter and dmesg all show the printer disconnecting and connecting to the correct new ports. USB thumb-drives and memory-sticks function. By this I assume that the usb subsystem is working. However, hpoj simply does not detect the printer. Any suggestions? Mozilla printer problems
I'm having difficulties getting my cups printer to work with Mozilla. The printer is located on a different box (server). But for this client, I can successfully print using 'cat foo | lpr' and Open Office documents as well.. But Mozilla tends to hang. There is a lot of traffic to the server in the ipp port, but nothing ever gets printed and Mozilla is effectively toast at this point. I have to 'kill' it. my variable $MOZ_PRINTER_NAME seems to be null as far as I can tell. I started up Mozilla from a xterm window and the variable had no definition in the same xterm windows (mozilla; echo ${MOZ_PRINTER_NAME}) I have found this mentioned a few times on Debian and Suse lists from google-ing, but I don't seem to find anyone who has resolved the matter. Can anyone help? this is my current printer configuration in Mozilla. lpr ${MOZ_PRINTER_NAME:+'-P'}${MOZ_PRINTER_NAME} -- We have DIFFERENT amounts of HAIR -- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Printer Problems
A further update. I started double checking everything. I proofread mime.convs and mime.types again, then ran dpkg -l|grep -i cups and started running debsums with the "a" option which I hadn't used before. debsums -as cupsys debsums: checksum mismatch cupsys file /etc/cups/cupsd.conf debsums -as libcupsys2 debsums: checksum mismatch libcupsys2 file /etc/cups/client.conf Next I tried apt-get --reinstall install cupsys and then repeating debsums -as cupsys with the same result as above. What might I do to correct these mismatches? Tom George PS I removed both my printer definitions and re-installed lp with the CUPS+GIMP-print v4.2.2-pre2 driver. It still doesn't work from a terminal - same old error - but I found that I could open the /etc/cups/ppd/lp.ppd file with mozilla and print it! I used the printout to double check against the ppd lines in the last message. With this workaround I presumably can print any file I want but its awkward. For example, I can't print a message directly from mutt. tg On Thu, Feb 06, 2003 at 09:23:36PM -0500, Jerome Acks Jr wrote: > On Thu, Feb 06, 2003 at 09:58:31AM -0500, Thomas H. Since posting my last message I downloaded Epson-Stylus_Color-gimp-print-cups.ppd from linuxprinting.org and added a second printer (ep) using this driver. lp -d ep printtest.txt also does not work. I am posting the tops of both ppd files down through LanguageLevel as I now recall that when I first began using this printer a year ago with CUPS installed from the cd I had to set the language level to 1. I just tried editing one of the ppd's to change the language level to 1 and then, after stopping and restarting cupsys, running lp printtest.txt again - still with no success. *PPD-Adobe: "4.3" *% *% For information on using this, and to obtain the required backend *% script, consult http://www.linuxprinting.org/cups-doc.html *% *% CUPS-O-MATIC generated this PPD file. Printer problems in x
I just installed cups and have configured my printer through cups web interface. Have a problem configuring the printer in x, so that i could print directly from kmail or openoffice. Here goes the problem... The printer i have added is working, command lpr -P is working perfectly. But when i push the print button in any kde application, the command line that is executed includes wrong printer name (lpr -P 'WRONG_NAME' ), so i get an error (because there is no printer with such name, naturally). Where can i configure printers in x, so that i can change the name of the default printer, which is obviously wrong? I can't rename the default printer in KDE control center, i have tried that. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Are you aware that Epson in Japan have written Linux drivers for many of their printers? The print quality is equal to that of the Windows drivers, and the latest version has a utility to show ink levels and to allow you to clean the cartridge nozzles, do alignment checks etc.. Wonderful! I simply installed the .rpm version of the driver - rpm -Uvh --nodeps pips-sc680_777-2.1-1.i386.rpm If I remember correctly, the rpm install runs the setup program which sorts out your /etc/printcap for you and allows you to specify the port etc.. Try loading the following modules from the command line as root : modprobe uhci modprobe printer and then retry accessing your printer. If it is OK, you can then add the two modules to your /etc/modules file to have them automatically loaded at startup. Of course drop the "modprobe" when inserting the lines to your file... It was successful for me :-) Hope this helps, Dominique
USB and Printer problems
Hi, I have been away from Linux and Debian for a while. I am now running a 'Woody' system. I have an Epson USB printer attached which I would like to use. I have read the documents I can find on USB in general and USB printers in particular. Kernel (2.2.19pre17) is compiled with USB and USB printer support as modules. I have created /dev/USB/lp0. In /proc/bus/usb/devices I can find both the USB hub and the printer. Using lpinfo (from cups) the USB printer is not found I so do not seem to be able to go further. I may have missed something simple so any pointers would be appreciated. ( Apologies for posting from the other OS but have not got the mail system set up for the mailing list yet) Thanks Roland -- Roland Hinkley
Printer problems
Hi When I do lpr foo only numbers are printed. I know that the lpd is running and lprng is started at bootup. I use magicfilterconfig and as far as I can see it should be o.k. I did a strace lpr and tried to send it to the list, but it seems not to have arrived. Are there any limitations concerning the size of attachments?? I am no expert in reading strace output, but I have the feeling that something is going wrong. TIA Stephan

I tried that too. Still no luck. Re: network printer problems
I tried what you suggested. It seemed to be a step in the right direction. After I issued lpc start all, and then checked lpc status all, I got reasonable results. Moreover, I didn't get the "connection refused" messages from my print jobs that I had before. However, having said all that, nothing printed. Here is the result of lpc status all p35_05: queuing is enabled printing is enabled no entries no daemon present lp35A: queuing is enabled printing is enabled 5 entries in spool area lp35A is ready and printing lp35: queuing is enabled printing is enabled 7 entries in spool area waiting for lp35 to become ready (offline ?) Incidentally, nothing printed from either lp35 and lp35A (p35_05 isn't yet set up so I'm not worried about that one yet). Thanks for your help. But I'm still a little snowed by the problem. Re: network printer problems
Sometimes, printers give the code that they are off-line (ran out of ink, someone physically took it off line), or the "I'm OK and ready to do your bidding, master" signal doesn't get recieved, so lpd thinks that the printer isn't working. You should be able to see this with lpc status, and a quick way to fix it is with lpc up all. I recently had a sudden "ain't going to print" problem (although not on a network), and I got around it by dropping into root and going to "lpc". Then I issued the "abort" command, followed by "start all". When I exited lpc, everything was back to normal. YMMV, though. Printer problems (me too)
Hi guys, Sorry to annoy you with another printer post, but I am having a problem here. HP DeskJet 697C connected on /dev/lp0 with Slink + 2.2.5. I can't even ouput a text file to it. If I do echo "blah" > /dev/lp0 It awakes, loads paper, cleans heads, and stops there. Doesn't even eject the paper until I turn it off/on. I have run magicfilterconfig, choosing "deskjet" and "dj550c" as filters, but I guess that the problem is somewhere else... Scanner -> printer problems.
I've been trying for a while to get my scanner and printer to cooperate and act like a copy machine. I've got a small script that I've hacked in various ways, but no matter what I try, I can't get the scale quite right. I've got a Mustek scanner that I use with SANE (at 300dpi, lineart mode) and an HP DeskJet 600 printer (used at 300dpi again). SANE spits out a PPM-format file. I've tried using "pnmtops" (from the netpbm package) and "convert" (from ImageMagick) to produce a postscript file that then goes through magicfilter. I *thought* I read the man pages appropriately, but the image on the paper is not *quite* the same size as the original. If I hold the original and the copy up to a light and look through them, I can see that the output is a bit bigger than the input. It's not really noticeable just looking at the output, but it annoys me. I mean, 300dpi input should translate to 300dpi output, no? Anyway here's the 'xerox' script I've tried: --- #!/bin/sh # Device to scan from DEV=mustek:/dev/scanner # 300 dpi RES=300 # Next 4 measurement are in millimeters LEFT=5 TOP=5 WIDTH=205 HEIGHT=255 # From the pnmtops man page SCALE=.25 # The actual command: scan -> pnmtops -> lpr scanimage -d ${DEV} -l ${LEFT} -t ${TOP} -x ${WIDTH} -y ${HEIGHT} \ --resolution ${RES} | \ pnmtops -dpi 300 -center -rle -scale ${SCALE} | \ lpr --- I have also tried things like: convert -density 300x300 /tmp/xerox.ppm /tmp/xerox.ps lpr /tmp/xerox.ps Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on what I might try? I know that I'm not going to get a perfect copy, but over the course of a full page the difference in scaling leads to an offset of a full line of text. I'm going to try xeroxing a ruler so I can measure the exact divergence. Sincerely, Ray Ingles (248) 377-7735[EMAIL PROTECTED] "Every question has a simple, easy-to-understand wrong answer." -H. L. Printer problems (Slink, apsfilter, HPDJ 694c)
I've got Slink and I'm trying to make aps filter and lpr work as a team, but it's giving me some problems (that Slackware didn't give me, oddly enough). I installed apsfilter and lpr from dselect. I read the stuff for apsfilter and found out it didn't have teh djc670 driver i used under slackware, but that the djc550 works just as well for AIAP... in theory. Everything installs well enough, but when I print something using lpr, ie: $ lpr received I get: lpr: connect: Connection refused jobs queued, but cannot start daemon. a ps aux reveals: root 3516 0.0 0.3 788 332 ?S17:13 0:00 lpd root 3518 0.0 0.3 812 376 ?S17:13 0:00 lpd two of them, as you can see. so kill -9 3516 and 3518 and lpd gives yet again: root 3604 0.0 0.3 788 332 ?S17:26 0:00 lpd root 3606 0.5 0.3 812 376 ?S17:26 0:00 lpd I'm assuming this is part of the problem, but not the entirety. I've tried using LPRng and magicfilter with similar results. I'm telling it to use /dev/lp1 right now (but have used /dev/lp0 in the past with similar results). Help?

Yes, IIRC, the 2.0 kernels do not support simultaneous support of the printer port for printing and for zip. If you want to use both, unload the zip module, then load the printer module, print, unload the printer module, then load the zip again. The other alternative is to use the 2.1 kernels, (at least the ones > ~2.1.80) support having both sets of modules loaded. One caveat of switching, the newer printer modules' default settings change the default printer from /dev/lp0 to /dev/lp1 (or maybe its the other way). In my attempt to isolate why I can't print I came across a potential problem. When I installed Linux I had a parallel port Zip Drive attached to my printer port. If I type 'mount /dev/sda Zip' I am able to mount the zip drive. Since my printer is connected to the Zip drive I was wondering if this might be why I cannot print by using /dev/lp1? If I have a file 'test' and type test > /dev/lp1 I get nothing. lp test gives an error message job 'cfA12' to [EMAIL PROTECTED] failed Might this be a result of the Zipdrive/Printer? If so, how can I correct it to print via the Zip drive? Thanks Lance
Re: Still having Printer Problems
Make a copy of your /etc/printcap and then run magicfilterconfig. I think the "if" line should be something like :if=/usr/sbin/ljet4l-filter ljet4l-filter is a magicfilter script (it starts with #! /usr/sbin/magicfilter). All lines should end with a \ until the end of the printer description. In the example below there is a blank line after lp and the sh line doesn't end with a \ either. You can reboot (but why reboot? this ain't winders) or you can issue the command: lpc reread all This tells lpr/lpc to read all the entries in printcap. Or you could just say: lpc reread lp to read just the lp entries (if you had 20 printers defined, you might want to do this). Then to double-check what lpr/lpc read, issue the command: lpc printcap all I'd run this last command first, to see if the printer utility knows about the changes you've made in printcap, then do the "lpc reread all" command, then run the "lpc printcap all" command again to make sure the changes were read. Now try printing and see what happens. RE: Still having Printer Problems
OK, this is how my printcap looks. I still get the insidious message 'transfer to [EMAIL PROTECTED] failed' What could be causing this? OR, what can I change in my printcap that mught get my printer working. It is an HP660C but I would think I could still get garbage out of it by typing 'lp test'? Is there anything special I need to do to set up magicfilter other than put it in my printcap? lp:\ :lp=/dev/lp1:\ :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\ :mx#0:\ :sh: :if=/usr/sbin/magicfilter:\ Thanks in advance for any help Lance
Printer Problems
I try and print and get an error lp: Driver configured but no interfaces found What does this mean and what do I need to do to print? Thanks Lance
SOLVED: printer problems
well, no one responded to this, so I'll just say that I fixed the problem by removing lprng and installing lpr. I read that lprng is supposed to be better but I also read in the bug lists that lprng has a problem with truncating the pipe before the printer has a chance to receive all the data, which was my problem with magicfilter. I think my problem with apsfilter is the filter is a shell script and lprng wants everything to be root which /usr/bin/magicfilter is, a root owned program, and you can't run shell scripts as suid root. maybe that isn't the problem, but it certainly looked that way to me (i.e. I didn't test anything to see for sure). well lpr doesn't have that problem and apsfilter is happy with it and what do I need the power of lprng for? I'm running a printer off of a parallel port on a laptop, single user system. sometimes it's just not my day. - John Kloss -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] < /dev/null
printer problems
I've been trying off and on for the last three days to get my printer working. I tried magicfilter but that didn't work, output was always screwed up and truncated. So I purged magicfilter and installed apsfilter to see if it was any better and now my printer daemon is refusing all requests. specifically connection to 'localhost' failed - connection refused job 'cfA223theseus' transfer to [EMAIL PROTECTED] failed now I purged magicfilter with dpkg --purge magicfilter and intsalled apsfilter the manual way (since I guess it isn't maintained as a package). so how do I change this? I know my printer works because I can do somethng like this cat file.ps | gs -q -r600x600 -sDEVICE=ljet4 -OutputFile=\|lpr - and have the file print out just fine (at least I could before I purged magic filter, now lpd is refusing connections). so I have debian 2.0 and using lprng . Everything worked under debian 1.3. - John Kloss -- Unsubscribe? mail -s unsubscribe [EMAIL PROTECTED] < /dev/null
