Where did you get the .deb files from? Have you asked the provider

Which, at a guess, means it comes from Google. If true, ain't no way
that goes on my system! If I'm wrong, please educate me.

That's not the only reason to dislike it. I found it impossible to lock

You can always install firefox (or seamonkey) from the upstream tar:

(Seamonkey is the continuation of the original mozilla UI.)

Yes, the listed links.

Then your IceWeasel and/or Wheezy are broken. I would do a backup,

As John implies here, every web browser has these kinds of bugs show
up reguarly. It's a symptom of the features wars that the big
companies wage to try to control the market, and, since we want to use
the web with everyone else, we get dragged into the wake whether we
wanted to ski or not.

Firefox has does not have especially more than anyone else.

I'm getting "no such message", "Sorry, no match found for message-id
20151216182759.GA3513" or "No such Message-ID known".

Found a post in the debian-security-announce news group about the
vulnerabilities but it said that they had been patched. They are a
use-after-free and a flaw in the handling of add-ons installation.
Are these the ones you refer to? If not, got another link?

I use the latest version of Firefox; Youtube defaults to HTML5 for the
most part, but I get no sound.

I've gleaned, perhaps incorrectly, that it may have to do with the fact
that my HDMI "watchamacallit" is card 0 and my ALC662 "chip" (that I use
for sound) is card 1.

I created an .asoundrc workaround file in my home directory many moons
ago to get sound because of the above arrangement.

I'd suggest not to install flashplugin-nonfree, but
browser-plugin-freshplayer-pepperflash instead.
It makes the Pepper Flash plugin from Chrome available for NPAPI web
browsers such as Iceweasel and Seamonkey, using the latest Flash
version, which is 20.0.0.228 at the moment.

This way, the video mentioned above plays fine here in Iceweasel,
Seamonkey, Opera and Vivaldi.

As for YouTube, in www.youtube.com/html5 you can set YouTube to use
html5 wherever possible.

Greetings all;

vivaldi-beta is an older version use the snapshot version. Vivaldi
is still alpha/beta software so the beta version isn't more stable than
the snapshot.

You don't install deb packages with apt. Use

dpkg -i vivaldi-some-version.deb
apt-get install -f

vivaldi creates an entry in /etc/apt/sources.d/ to make it easy
to update with apt-get

So I stepped into the deb with mc, and copied its contents to the
directories it would have been put in, even ran the postinst thing.
Didn't run from a cli.

So now you are sure your installation is broken.
At you own risk! Try to remove those files.

success,

btw. Vivaldi runs fine over here

I nuked all the gnash and lightspark stuff, then reinstalled iceweasel.
Some of the flash interference is still there, but when I click on the

All five played fine in Google Chrome. The last three played fine in
Iceweasel. The first two had a large blank space at the top in Iceweasel,
but otherwise played fine.

I have flashplugin-nonfree installed, not gnash, which I have found
unsatisfactory.

Some of it did take a while to download.

Had you thought of actually installing Iceweasel from the repositories? You
might find it worked better, as well as updating better.

I have no problems with .jpg, they just work.

Well, slashdot can crash chrome just sitting there on the front page,
presumably when an attempt is made to load some off-my-screen bit of
slashdot.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/armed-militia-takeover-oregon-debate-meaning-of-terrorist/
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-marshal-south-dakota-shoots-kills-south-carolina-murder-suspect/
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/the-quiet-power-of-meditation/
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/activists-target-gun-makers-with-unload-your-401k/
Thats 4 that give this:
Error 413 Request Entity Too Large, purported from the varnish cache
server, whatever the heck that is.

http://freedomoutpost.com/2016/01/isis-to-activate-thousands-of-sleeper-cells-in-2016-to-destabilize-the-west/
There I found a flash, tried to play it, clicked on the update now
button. it went thru the download of a 32 bit version in a tar.gz,
supposedly saving it in ~/Downloads. This is the only flash file in
Downloads:
-rw-r--r-- 1 gene gene5979889 Aug 25 2013
flashplayer_11_sa.i386.tar.gz
I have unpacked it and installed it several times, no effect.

Thanks.

You should know better than to do what Adobe tells you (the alert is
coming from the Adobe server software at the site you are accessing. It
has nothing to do with Firefox). Get rid of anything you got directly
from Adobe. Install the flashplugin-nonfree package. When you get that
"alert" run "update-flashplugin-nonfree --install". Adobe is not
releasing new versions for Linux but they are patching security bugs.

Better yet, get rid of Adobe and install Gnash.

BTW there is a Firefox plugin that will make Youtube use HTML5 instead
of Flash.

With so many giving trouble, have you considered creating a new login user to
test with? I find it hard to believe you can find no browser capable of using
the web, or every browser crashing. I've found found none incapable for many
many moons.

Maybe you have a filesystem problem that's affecting HTTP connections. Maybe
a forced / filesystem check would find and fix a problem.

I do not have Flash installed on this system, and have no problem doing what
needs doing among 5-6 different Gecko and KHTML web browsers, e.g. on cbsnews:

Yes, I have seen that requester many many times, but when I go to the
adobe site like the suggested link goes to, the only version it offers
me is exactly what I've had for ay least 2 years, the last one afer
which they stated that no new linux compatibles would be released, that
was the last one.

Can you explain that?

As a FWIW I have these installed: (hand copied from the synaptic screen,
and these archives are not present in /var/cache/apt/archives. Accuracy
of hand copying dubious)

flash-plugin-nonfree1.3.2+wheezy1
pepperflash-plugin-nonfree 1.4~bpo60+1
browser-plugin-lightspark 0.6.0.1-2
browser-plugin-gnash0.8.11~git20120629-1+deb7u1
konqueror-plugin-gnash same version as above

All the usual lightspark suspects are installed, as are all the usual
suspects for gnash.

I have put up with this slow destruction of what iceweasel can do, dating
back to other installs as long as 2 years back. No one else seems to be
having problems with it they can't fix.

Whats next? Nuke em all & see if iceweasel can fix it when its all
missing?

I have done that, about 6 times now, it opens no other windows UNTIL I
have given it my sudo passwd.

Since I have 2 copies of it sitting in /root/Downloads I think I'll have
a root mc session move one of them back and if needed change the perms.
Then look at it and see if I can do it without that broken script. Or
better yet, edit the script if I can see whats wrong.

Thanks.

IMO whoever wrote that script needs to take another look at it since they
do NOT want root to install it.

For me, the path of least resistance is Debian stable with minimal

Regarding IceWeasel on Wheezy, the default installation didn't seem to
include support for Flash. My guess is that the warning messages come
from a JavaScript library (on the web server, or other Internet server)
that detects the absence of an add-on to deal with the relevant MIME
type. Installing the following Debian package makes the warnings go
away and allows me to watch videos on YouTube:

I just don't get this at all. You must have something set somewhere asking

The latter. From its about screen:

Version 37.0.2062.120 Built on Debian 7.6, running on Debian 7.9 (281580)

It was updated a few weeks back, which I had hoped would fix the
crashing, but it made zero diff in that regard.

No, they are not the same thing. There is chromium, which is a Debian

Works (most of the time).

Apparently I don't have any addons installed, all it shows me are the get

Downloaded and installed the installer to my /home directory. On running
it I am unable to progress beyond the download of the tar.bz2, which I
have now done twice because after the download, the installer can't find
it!

Why? Because it asks for my sudo password, and when iceweasel downloads
it, iceweasel is running as a sudo root, and puts the download
in /root/Downloads. It cautions about running the installer as root in
the readme's it showed me a few times. I have no access to the tarball
as me, so whats next?

Thank you.

Best thing I have found is a fork of firefox called Pale Moon. It uses
some of the plugins and extensions from firefox, but around version 25.
I installed it over a month ago, and have not had a crash since then.

Greetings all;

Trying to find a web browser that actually works here. iceweasel
has been so emasculated that it asks about flash everytime, bringing
up a requester that has a button labeled "allow and remember", but
it doesn't remember, you have to do it for every flash presented.

Just remove flash-block plugin. :) Ric

Where, locate comes back without finding it.

Either go into tools/addons to disable it or use synaptic to see if you
installed the package. That should do the trick. :) Ric
