Yes, this is normal and there is no easy way to achieve what you want.

What you can do is unsubscribe and, when writing to the list, asking to
be Cc'ed. The list does not require being subscribed in order to post.

I'll take the answer to another level. You fail to understand what an open
source community is. It isn't free support. It isn't a service which
provides for your needs, now. It is a group, where anyone can help
anyone. If you are interested in giving, as well as taking, then stay in
the list and maybe you can contribute something. If you're only in it for
your own selfish needs, then do as some other suggest and get off the list,
asking to be CC'ed with a good answer.

It's normal to get all mails, send to the list. There's a digest
version available too, but it didn't work good in the past, I don't know
if it's ok now. Unfortunately we also will receive spam by the list.

You should use a MUA and filter incoming mails by thread or subject, so
all unwanted mails could be moved to the trash folder.

We can't; It's done that way so nobody else can (un)subscribe you

included at the end of each message sent via the list. For some reason,
they aren't always. So, just in case, here they are:-

To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Dear Patrick,

If you want to remove yourself, here are the instructions:
http://lists.debian.org/

But let me give you a little tip how I cleared my inbox of all of
these messages - I actually subscribed to quite a few mailing lists
over time and at one point over 90% of the messages incoming every day
were just from these mailing lists.

So I opened a special gmail account and subscribed to all these
mailing lists again with that account and unsubscribed with my mail
address.

Now whenever I wish to find out what's going on at these mailing
lists, I just log in into this special account. A little bit of
filtering and everything is very tidy even in this inbox.

I was advised to use the gmane I found then knode and this is how I do it.
I also set up digest mailing, so mails from lists are bundeled in one single
mail.

Look at the options you can configure and make your life easier

I subscribe to a lot of lists with all of my addresses, I use a
combination of Gmail's filtering and procmail on the addresses managed
on my servers. Because I use IMAP I don't see all the list traffic
unless I look at it.
