Re: lpr: unable to get official name for local machine
> Please can anyone tell me what might have sparked the message: > lpr: unable to get official name for local machine Sorry folks, I have found how I caused this - it was by deleting a line n.n.n.n bay from /etc/hosts. ( I got the lpr source to find that out, I find if I put the same IP numbers as localhost for the local machine (bay) that is enough to satisfy lpr.) The line deletion was done while trying to cope with a ppp problem. So I have had my faith in fsck restored. I hope I can rely on it to alert me by filename if something is spoilt beyond recovery. clare -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . lpr: unable to get official name for local machine
Hi group: Please can anyone tell me what might have sparked the message: lpr: unable to get official name for local machine I have re-installed the lpr from lpr_5.9-13.1.deb, but no cure that way. hostname gets the right answer for the machine name (bay). Root can cat to lp2 and print. /etc/printcap seems normal. Using the official 1.3 CD-rom, I had a functional lpr until my CD-ROM got a series of errors which caused overwriting on the disk and hung the machine. fsck then had to clobber some files but I don't know which. Perhaps I am supposed to record all those inode numbers but if so there has to be a way to make fsck do it - should I be getting them recorded? I don't understand why read errors should have such a major effect, even if my hardware is a bit weird. By that I mean that when mounting the CD-Rom I often have to do it twice, as below: bay# mount -t iso9660 /dev/sjcd mnt mount: block device /dev/sjcd is write-protected, mounting read-only SJCD: timeout in state 4 end_request: I/O error, dev 12:00, sector 64 isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev 12:00 iso_blknum 16 block 32 mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sjcd, or too many mounted file systems bay# mount -t iso9660 /dev/sjcd mnt mount: block device /dev/sjcd is write-protected, mounting read-only ISO9660 Extensions: RRIP_1991A bay# - I have installed maybe 50 packages off it with no problem; until this series of errors while reading xemacs-support. I had similar problems with an earlier version of debian with this CD-rom reading and was hoping this newer version would be proof against it. clare -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Re: lpr: unable to get official name for local machine (fwd) fixed.
Name resolving works again on my machines! Still don't know what exactly happened though. It seems that the reason for bind not working out of the 1.3-box for me, is that I answered '' where I should have answered 'none' to bindconfig (at least that is the only difference that I can think of.) Looking at the files, the big difference was a missing '@' in front of the line for localhost. When I placed the '@' back in the configuration file on the machine that had a working named before the 1.3 upgrade, it worked again as well. It seemed to happed during the upgrade to 1.3 but I checked the base-files package and it doesn't set the permissions wrong. It is a mystery but a lesson as well. Take note. NONE of the docs, HOW-TO's, man pages seem to mention the permisions required of the conf files otherwise I would have found this long ago. Live and learn I guess. To me it looks like nameserving doesn't quite work out-of-the-box in upcoming debian 1.3. I've upgraded a box to frozen and that broke a working bind configuration, I don't know how badly because I haven't really had the time to look into it. Re: lpr: unable to get official name for local machine
For those of you following this here is an update. It appears to be some sort of name lookup failure. I can't figure it out. When I try and print with lpr it fails with the error given in the subject. This turns out is just an indicator of something else. I have a stand alone machine that I dial in to my isp and run slirp to emulate ppp. So, I have given my machine a bogus name of servis.snet. Before I upgraded to 1.3 I could ping, finger, telnet, etc to servis.snet. Now nothing seems to be able to figure out what servis.snet is. My conf files are: /etc/hostname servis /etc/hosts 127.0.0.1 localhost loopback servis.snet servis /etc/resolv.conf domain snet search snet ecn.purdue.edu nameserver 128.46.131.20 nameserver 128.46.131.20 nameserver 128.46.131.20 /etc/host.conf order hosts, bind multi on /etc/init.d/network ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1 route add -net 127.0.0.0 I don't know if named should be running or not. If I start it with the default config it tries to reach 198.41.0.4 in /var/named/named.root and fails because I am not connected. If I start named when I have connected with ppp programs still do not resolve what servis.snet is and give hostname failures. When I issue 'hostname' it returns 'servis' but if I call host name with any commandline options it gives 'hostname: Unknown host' error. PLEASE HELP ME FIGURE THIS OUT, EVEN IF IT IS TRIVIAL!
