The naming problems are a result of history. Before there was a
testing distribution, woody was the same as unstable. That was when
Helix set things up. Probably if they changed things now that would
disrupt the people who have their apt sources set up.

The ximian site says they support potato and woody.

Kinda makes you wonder if you know what they are doing.

Ok, that's an unfair shot :) I thought the ximian packages were fine
when I was using potato; now that I'm running sid I removed them; they
cause nothing but trouble if you run woody or sid.

I upgraded a couple potato systems to woody and then sid and got very

finally did

apt-get install libgnomesupport0 libgnomeui32 gnome-libs-data

which worked, and then I went back to dist-upgrade and continued.

I have two more potato systems to upgrade. I think I'll try purging helix

Since I've been running sid and Ximian's Gnome packages, until I did
an apt-get dist-upgrade yesterday, I saw no problems. Then, I ran into
a similar problem as the original poster -- there was a debian package
newer than the ximian one and it caused a brief headache.

Why exactly shouldn't you mix the two ??

Won't ximian normally have newer packages than debian, and therefore
avoid a conflict ??

You can check previous posts about this subject.

Ximian does not support the unstable branch of Debian. Furthermore, their
versioniong seems to be inconsistent (or at least troublesome) with the
standard Debian package versioning.

Finally, the unstable packages are usually more up-to-date.

newbie fighting with Helix Gnome

2001-04-15 Thread simon
I'm new to Linux and even newer to Debian.

I am running woody, and today (15th) I did an apt-get upgrade that's
messed up Gnome. I was running Helix Gnome, although I did plan to
remove it and go back to plain Gnome...whatever the update did today
it seems to have replaced parts of Helix Gnome with newer standard
Gnome components and completely messed up my dependancies. apt-get
upgrade failed with the text pasted below:-

Unpacking oaf (from .../archives/oaf_0.6.5-5_i386.deb) ...

I cannot apt-get -f install out of it as that fails with the same
error. I thought I would remove helix completely and then reinstall
gnome, but apt is telling me I do not have task-helix-gnome
installed. I'm at a bit of a loss. Am I right to try and remove
then re-install Gnome (I don't want Helix back) and if so, how can I
do this.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

ThanksSimon.

purge every gnome package. removing task-* packages does not remove
anything.

dpkg -l | grep ximian
purge everything listed -- apt-get --purge remove blah blah blah
dpkg -l | grep helix
purge everything listed -- apt-get --purge remove blah blah blah

then try a apt-get install task-gnome with your sources.list NOT
including ximian/helix.

I cannot remove any of the packages. Whatever I attempt to remove I

You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:

Running apt-get -f install just produces the error I posted

would be most welcome :)

then do the rest of the ximian/helix purging as described earlier.

also make sure your sources.list do NOT contain ximian or helix

you might want to use dselect to purge these packages, they will be
marked as `obsolete' in dselect after removing helix crap from the
sources.list and running update.

Minor point: you might want to make that grep ximi instead of
grep ximian, given that helix/ximian version numbers tend to be quite
long, and dpkg -l offers no way to specify a field width.

I (mostly) eliminated Ximian today, and, yes, there is a package or two
that you'll miss with the complete ximian.

Sorry to hear that Simon's upgrade messed up. I actually did an
apt-get dist-upgrade today, and it was very helpful in purging
Ximian. It seems that a bunch of new 1.4 core packages made it into
testing today, which upgraded from Ximian reasonably cleanly (it just took
a couple of go-arounds with -f to make it work). Then, it was just a
matter of manually replacing the rest of the Ximian packages. In most
cases, apt-get --purge remove followed by apt-get install did the
trick, but, if dependencies got in the way, I downloaded the deb's and
dpkg -i'ed them (this would have definately been simplified by a
 --force-downgrade in apt-get...).

Most of those went to equal versions, but a few (mostly the games) seemed
to be downgrades. Oh well. I can't personally see much difference
between gnome-xbill 1.2 and 1.0 g.

As was pointed out in a previous thread, there are some useful gnome and
gnome-related packages that have not yet made it into testing. For those
packages, I kept the Ximian versions. Those packages include:

abiword
eog
gnome-applets
sawfish
sawfish-gnome

I also kept the necessary Ximian dependancies for those packages:

libgnomeprint11
librep9
rep
rep-doc
rep-gtk
rep-gtk-gnome

I suppose that it would have been possible to eliminate these 11 packages,
and replace them with versions from unstable, but then you start getting
into bonobo dependancies...eek! I'm trying to keep my box a fairly clean
testing installation, though I have installed a few packages from
unstable. It's so hard to resist when it works so easily, but I decided
to stay with the devil I know, in this case. So, those Ximian packages
stay on, I've got local copies of them, and I no longer have
spidermonkey.ximian.com in my sources.list.

Oh, I also kept a few of the pretty theme packages that Ximian is so keen
on (HeliX is still, by far, my favourite Sawfish theme g):

sawfish-themes
gtk-themes
helix-sweetpill

Anyways, it all seems to be working together quite nicely. Hope this
helps out any other would-be Ximian-purgers out there.
