This certainly. It's also relatively easy to mute a Mozilla window
and not notice - Ctrl-M should mute/unmute - or clicking on the
speaker icon in the appropriate tab.

[I say this as someone who was significantly caught out by this
recently - it's too easy to miss and spend 1/2 hour trying to
work out what's gone wrong. In my case, it was a video call
where the other participants know me well enough not to make
fun of my efforts :) ]

All the very best,

Do you have any *.wav or *.mp3 files on your computer? If so, try
double-clicking on one. Hopefully, a music player app will open the
file and start playing it.

Alternatively, does your computer have a CD/DVD/BD drive? If so, insert
a music CD. Hopefully, a music player app will open and play the CD.
Or, you might get a chooser dialog asking what to do; try to find a
choice that plays the CD.

My guess is that some sound system feature got misconfigured, such as a
mixer setting. On Xfce, I have a panel with an icon that looks like a
speaker. If I left click on it, I get some mute buttons and sliders I
can adjust. If I right click and choose Properties, I get a tabbed
pop-up window with more settings. Looking in the menu (e.g. Start
button) -> Multimedia -> PulseAudio Volume Control, a tabbed app starts
with lots of settings. I expect Gnome has similar features. See what
you can find. Look for icons with an "X" on them, that might mean mute.
Click on them to turn muting off.

If the above ideas fail, do you know how to issue root commands in a
terminal?

One more thing. Recently, I plugged wired earbuds into my system
for the first time in months, and they were just plain not detected.
None of the GUI tools recognized that an output device existed.

What I had to do was run Alsamixer, press F6, select my sound card,
(not HDMI audio or Bluetooth audio, both of which had existed), and
then force it to be output and not input. The default Bullseye audio
system seems to be prone to failure to detect audio devices.

I have the same problem, no souud  using bookworm and gnome. I have
tried to days and have no solution.

One detail I can add. I too plugged earbud. They register as headphones
(unplugged) as output and Rear Microphone (plugged in) as input.

I finally got my sound working.  I followed some advice from here:

However, if I issue the command

I have looked all around the WWW to try to find a solution to this

in the audio group in the /etc/group configuration file. Of course, I
have that, and have confirmed it.  This is not a brand new

Other common remedies I have tried are to fiddle with the pavucontrol

Re: problem with sound for bullseye upgrade on amd64: must be root for sound to work on my machine

2021-08-25 Thread James D Freels

I have not received a response yet, but I am hoping.

What I know:

-sound works as root, not as user

-snd_oxygen module (required driver for my card) is loaded, but I can't
verify what is loading it.  no messages in dmesg show it being loaded

-since snd_oxygen is loaded, it makes sense that aplay works as root

-pulse does not show the sound card, but does show the hdmi audio on my
nvidia card, and the microphone on my web cam.  Both are muted in
pavucontrol

-big question:  why doesn't sound card get loaded by pulseaudio ?  How
can I force that

-I am now going over every occurrence of a pulseaudio configuration file
on my system for a clue

Any help appreciated.  Is there a good troubleshoot procedure for
debian/11/bullseye sound problems ?

This one hurts. Be sure that your speakers are plugged in to power, if
they have their own amp, and that it is ~turned on~. That might explain
the tinny sound. And, that they are plugged into the correct socket if
they are not self powered. If you're plugged into the stereo line-out
you will get tinny sound if the speakers are not self powered with a
built-in amp. Your manual will tell you which is correct. Good luck! Ric

Searching for "Linux alsa ALC887 low volume" shows you are not alone, if
that makes it less painful.
Some links suggest that the alsa driver for this Realtek codec has
issues. Are you running the latest kernel in Jessie (3.12) ?

Have you ever had sound from this motherboard?

Alsamixer might not be able to access to volume controls for the card.
Maybe trying the following will shed some light:

$ amixer -c0 controls | grep -i volume
<...>
numid=20,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Volume'
<...>

$ amixer -c0 cget numid=20
numid=20,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw---R--,values=1,min=0,max=64,step=0
  : values=53
  | dBscale-min=-64.00dB,step=1.00dB,mute=0

So, here we have master volume set to about 80% ( = 53/64)
You can crank it that up like this:

$ amixer -c0 cset numid=20 100
numid=20,iface=MIXER,name='Master Playback Volume'
  ; type=INTEGER,access=rw---R--,values=1,min=0,max=64,step=0
  : values=64
  | dBscale-min=-64.00dB,step=1.00dB,mute=0

Check the other volume setting, too.
Any change?

It did in my case.

When the original MB on this box died about 3 years ago, and I replaced
it with a newer, but equivalent one that was compatible with my old
CPU, RAM, etc., the sound barely worked -- LOW Volume. After tinkering
with it for sometime, I just totally uninstalled/purged the sound (ALSA,
Pulseaudio and Pulseaduio-equalizer), reinstalled, configured the
drivers, settings, etc., and it worked!

In any case, it won't hurt to try.

Because of the new hardware, the original install for the old hardware
is probably missing needed drivers, configurations, etc. What I would
do, basically, in purge ALSA and Pulseaudio, if installed, manually
delete all ALSA and pulseaudio system directories and configs, etc. and
reinstall ALSA, set config files, if needed, etc.

Re: Problem with Sound Volume

Perhaps it's hardware related and not software related.

Do you connect by line outs to amp ins or do you use a headphone
directly connected to the mobos output or are you using any digital
interface or something else?

The mobos today might use the same sound chips and internal amps as the
vendors use for mobile phones, tablet PCs etc., if so, then by EU
Regulation and perhaps for non-EU countries too, the maximal output
level is limited. If you connect a good consumer or professional
headphone with e.g. 600 Ohms, the output will be silent, you need a
headphone that has less than 80 Ohms and even then the sound still will
be not as loud, as many people want it.

Since it's unlikely that an onboard sound device provides selectable
nominal levels, it likely is related to the impedance.

Thanks for the replies

I am using the alsamixer, and have tried to adjust the volume with it
running in a terminal and from the icon on the task bar. Same result -

Any special reason to install lenny? The intel audio drivers have seen

You keep posting ill-informed guesses that are insulting the people who

you cannot even be bothered to google for "C-Media USB sound adapter

Lubos,

lv> is that a card using snd-intel-hda?

No.

According to investigations described in the
previous half dozen or so messages, the C-Media
USB sound adapter invokes snd-usb-audio and
snd-hda-intel.

The on-board device invokes snd-intel8x0.

Sound input _via_ the C-Media adapter failed
months ago at the time of the upgrade from
etch to lenny, as I recall.

Sound input _via_ the on-board hardware and
snd-intel8x0 failed just a few days ago, 2008-08-11.

I've reinstalled the alsa related packages
including xfce4-mixer-alsa to no avail.

I've also just made a test user account to
see what happens there.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards

Whereas if test is logged into my Skype account,
the only sound device visible is default. The
sound devices do not exist for Skype!

This all seems very perverse.

Understandable! The only practical

new problem with sound

2008-08-14 Thread peasthope
Folk,

I'll start with an apology for raising another
problem with sound. The conflict between USB
and on-board devices was such an ordeal.

Once the conflict was solved, I was ambitious
enough to install the volume control in the
xfce4 panel.

Bad idea. After that sound is no longer
acquired by the on-board Intel device. Sound
input failed on the USB device months ago.
I've tried 3 different microphones; unlikely
that all have failed. The devices appear OK
in Skype but there is no reply from the echo test.

Another obvious symptom is that the green "master"
volume bar in the xfce4 panel can not be raised.
It can be dragged up with the mouse but disappears
when the mouse button is released.

Is there a microphone analogue of speaker-test?

Does anyone recognize these symptoms? Any ideas?

Thanks again, ... Peter E.

I use etch and SB16
I add noisapnp to kernel options
I config sound with 3 commands:

modprobe uart401
modprobe sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5

Now vlc can play DVD, and I can hear sound.
I install mplayer from debian-multimedia, but can't play mp3,

Hi,

I think it was a problem with the alsa drivers. I compiled the latest
version of Alsa and now it works fine.

Hi,

That does'nt seem to solve the problem. The volume level is high and it is
not muted. But still no sound.

Thanks anyway,

With alsamixer press "M" or "m" when you're over "Master" and that will

Problem with sound - HP Pavillion dv6500t

2007-10-17 Thread Raghunandan HK
Hi,

I recently installed Debian 4.0 on a HP Pavillion dv6500t laptop. The
problem is that the mute button turns on at some point during the boot (it
is not on when the booting starts) and remains so. Pressing the key does not
turn it off. As a result I get no sound even after using alsa mixer to set
the volume to the maximum. I think the mute key stroke is detected. But it
does not cause any change. I printed dmesg to see the operations that are
being done about the same time as when the mute turns on. All I found was
that Bluetooth, Wifi, and the Synaptics touch pad are turned on just before
this happens. I have looked on google but could not find a solution. Hoping
to find it here :)

There is a problem with ogg123 on my ThinkPads-T42 and T20 and
Aptiva-desktop with the version of vobis-tools and libao2 currently up
on test and unstable. I had to reload from stable. However, mpg123 was
not affected nor ogg under vlc (vlc must be using another lib).

I opened a problem last month, no response.

Firstly, thanks to all of your helpful advices in this friendly community !

The problem is 'solved'. To me it's no solution, since - as I wrote in the
OP - I hadn't done any changes. Running for months and just apt-get
update / upgrade. And then it *must not* break on Sarge.

This is what I found in dmesg:

 ACPI: PCI interrupt :00:1f.5[B] -> GSI 7 (level, low) -> IRQ 7
 unable to grab IRQ 7
Intel ICH: probe of :00:1f.5 failed with error -16

And /proc/interrupts were identical; showing IRQ 7 to be occupied by
LPT0:, contrary to what lspci makes me believe.

I rebooted and disabled the Parallel Port at reboot and now everything is
back to normal. Better said: 'normal'; because there is no inherent
necessity to load the audio controller to IRQ7; and neither does it
complain; I ask you to read the dmesg properly: ACPI has its problems with
it.
This is how it looks when working properly:

ACPI: PCI interrupt :00:1f.5[B] -> GSI 7 (level, low) -> IRQ 7

 0: 66676279 XT-PIC timer
  1: 22 XT-PIC i8042
  2: 0 XT-PIC cascade
  7: 170589 XT-PIC Intel 82801DB-ICH4, Intel 82801DB-ICH4 Modem
  8: 4 XT-PIC rtc
  9: 0 XT-PIC acpi
 11:9023557 XT-PIC eth0, ehci_hcd, uhci_hcd, uhci_hcd, uhci_hcd, y
enta, yenta, ohci1394
 12: 58 XT-PIC i8042
 14: 182138 XT-PIC ide0

Since I don't need the local LPT0:, I shall leave this 'solution' in place.
But someone else might hit this bug / trap elsewhere; so beware !

Thanks again,

Uwe

These are alsa modules, but I notice that you've loaded the pcm oss

Are you using udev or devfs? If udev, is the daemon running? /dev/dsp
should get created by udev when you load the snd_pcm_oss module. I don't
have a computer running devfs to check, but I would imagine it's largely
the same.

Hope that helps,

Can you show the output of:

ls -ldL /dev/dsp

Maybe it's just the symlink /dev/dsp has been redirected somewhere?

Though I didn't change anything on purpose; just the usual upgrades, I
lost my sound a few days ago.
Only today is the time to check it:

esd doesn't start any longer (it always did):

$ esd &
[1] 28425
$ /dev/dsp: No such device

Esound is and remains installed:

# apt-get install esound
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
esound is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Quite a few modules are loaded:

Finally, the lspci -v gives me:

I would try changing the IRQ value to whatever else is available and seeing
if that helps. You might also want to try changing the DMA value, too. I
had to go through nearly all combinations before I got my sound card to
work.

strange problem with sound card

i have SB 16 and Debian 3.0. after compiling kernel
2.4, i put the following to /etc/modules:

sound
uart401
sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330

it seems that sound driver works, because lbreakout2's
sound effect is OK and xawtv'TV sound is OK. but i
can't record TV sound in xawtv. it complains:"oss:
read: Input/output error". later i found "cat foo.au
>/dev/audio" does not work, with dmesg, i found
"Sound:DMA(output)time out - IRQ/DRQ config error?"

Problem with sound - Ensoniq 5880

2003-10-05 Thread Uwe Dippel
Now comes the sound ...
The card is recongnized (lspci) correctly as in the Subject.
I googled type and debian and found that I should use the sb module. I
also added the Sound-core and Sound OSS when it didn't want to install.

Then I found from that same search, that sndconfig could be used. I
installed and ran it. To no avail. It also recognised the card
correctly, but when it came down to playing the sample, it said
"the following error occured playing the sample: OK" (meaning, that no
error was indicated). The same machine runs RH 8 flawlessly, including
sound.

Thanks for any help !

i dont know what worked. but here is what i did after my problem.

downloaded and installed libmikmod, splay and aumix packages

got out of kde and ran splay from console

used aumix to up the volume and it rocked.

as kent had identified, it seems to be problem of kde than of debian.
because the moment i have k running, i cant hear anything. get into
gnome and all is well!

any solutions for kde problem? it shows device /dev/dsp not found or
some such thing.

thanx in advance,

sandip

It looks like everything is in place, but if I remember correctly, the
same could be said for my setup when it still didn't work, at which
point I believe I installed the alsa drivers, which solved my problem.

If you have broadband (or a decent dialup connection) you can modify
/etc/apt/sources.list to point to an ftp or http site rather than to the
local CDs. Then "apt-get update" followed by "apt-get install splay".

If you want, you can use XMMS from within X, but do it without KDE/Gnome
(for the present time, for testing purposes); use something simple like
ICEWM. Kill any session managers ("/etc/init.d/wdm stop" where "wdm"
might also be "kdm" or "xdm" or "gdm". Then create (or if they exist
already, rename and then create) .xsession and .xinitrc in your home
directory with the single line "icewm", and then start X manually with
"startx".

It's been forever since I had to get it working, and I don't have any
step-by-steps, but the general idea was to compile a 2.4.18 kernel,
including module support for the via8233, then apt-get the alsa stuff
(seems like there were three relevant packages -- I'm not at that
machine currently to see what I've got installed; IIRC alsa-modules was
one of them). I think I wound up manually compiling the alsa-modules
(./configure, make, make install), and then modprobing the resulting
via82xxx-snd module.

I wish I could give you a step-by-step, but I just don't remember. Sorry.

About the only general suggestion I could make would be to recompile the
kernel and strip it down to a more minimal setup (don't worry about
NVIDIA or accelerated X, or USB support (unless needed for
keyboard/mouse), etc), just for testing purposes. Once you get sound
working, assuming you do, then you can go back and add all the bells and
whistles.

Also, don't load the sound modules from within X, again, to keep things
simple for testing purposes.

Kent

Kent (or anyone else who knows),

How did you get your onboard AC'97 chipset (via8233) working? I've just
bought a Gigabyte GA-7VRX motherboard with this chip and can't get sound
working. I'm running woody, with kernel 2.4.19 (from
kernel-source-2.4.19-1) and I tries installing the alsa packages, but
every time I got the via8233 module (and it's dependancies) loaded, my
whole system froze - network, keyboard - hard reset necessary. I can't
find any relevant messages in the logs.

If it is of any relevance, I'm running the NVIDIA kernel and GLX modules
for my GeForce 4MX.

If you've got step-by-step instructions, or some hints for where to
look, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Bec

Run "modconf" and see if there's a module available for the 82440MX.
You'll either need such a module loaded (lsmod shows only the ethernet
nic module loaded), or you'll need support for that chipset compiled
directly into the kernel (which would probably only be the case if
you've compiled your own kernel and included that support, which you
seem to indicate that you've done). If the kernel sources or modules
don't work properly, you may need to use an "outside" driver, such as
the alsa drivers. I had to do this for my onboard AC'97 chipset (via8233).

Re: problem with sound card from a newbie

2002-09-30 Thread Andy

I have the same problem and followed your directions exactly.
I even upped my kernel from 2.2.20 to 2.4.18 and included the Intel
sound option into the kernel but having same problems.
On bootup I get the following message:
Sound Server Message: Error while starting driver: device /dev/dsp can't be
opened. (no such device).
I have done chmod 777 on /dev/dsp /dev/dsp1 2 and 3 added myself to audio
group. Here is my lsmod and lspci:

debian:/home/andy# lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 82440MX I/O Controller (rev 01)
00:00.1 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82440MX AC'97 Audio

00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82557 [Ethernet Pro 100] (rev 0c)

debian:/home/andy# lsmod
Module Size Used byNot tainted
eepro100 17680 1

Can someone help? I really miss my music. :-(

What's the error message? What does 'dmesg | tail' say?

In case there's no error message most likely the channels of your sound
device are just tuned to a low volume or are muted.

Run a mixer application (aumix is good) and turn up the volume and
unmute the appropriate channels.

I would suggest reducing your system to a simpler configuration by
killing X for testing purposes, because KDE and Gnome have sound daemons
which can "get in the way". Just logging out of X should be sufficient,
although you could also kill your session-manager if you have one
running (something like "/etc/init.d/kdm stop").

Then make sure you have a console-mode sound player (apt-get install splay).

Now try playing an ogg (or if you must, .mp3) file like so: splay
myrockingtune.ogg

What are the results?

You might need to run a mixer (like alsamixer or amixer) to unmute the
audio or to up the volume.

Also, you'll need to be in the audio group (just type "groups" to see
what groups you're in; to add yourself to audio, as root type "addgroup
your_user_name audio").

You can also check out the results of "lspci" to make sure Linux agrees
with you as to what sound card you have.

Also "lsmod" will show you the loaded modules.

Hopefully these tidbits will help get you a little further along.

You probably have to add yourself to the "audio" group.

as root:

# adduser audio

Then log out and then log back in.

See if that helps. If not, come back for more.

Good luck.

problem with sound card from a newbie

2002-09-30 Thread Sandip P Deshmukh

i have been using windows for quite some time now and am contemplating
to shift to linux. so i am a 'newbie' to linux - in short. i recently
installed debian 3.0 on my compaq making it a dual boot machine. it is a
piii 766mhz machine with on board sound card.

while installing, in the section of device driver modules, i have
included i810. it also selected some yamaha ac97 and reported it to be a
success.

now, my system boots up and as a user i can log into it. however, none
of the sound files can play. kde's control panel shows that there is no
sound card.

i do not know what to do now. stuck - in a way. looking forward to some
help. something that will be step by step and simple for even a layman
like me.

thanx in advance

Did you add yourself to the audio group? ie

adduser matthew audio

When I started with Debian I recompiled the kernel three times before
finding out about that one!

I would suggest using the alsa sound drivers. However this will require
either compiling the modules from the source (package available) or
switching to a kernel-image version that has available paired alsa-modules
package (packages available). If you'd like, I can provide a working alsa
configuration for the SB Live! card.

The Live! uses the emu10k1 driver. Not the sb driver. A pitfall.

You will need to select the emu10k1 subdirectory, which only contains
a single emu10k1 entry. Select that and have modconf configure your
system to load it. That should be all there is to it.

Then sit back and play some mp3s. Oh, no not those Evil(TM) mp3s
which are patent encumbered and possibly require an expensive license.
Retake. Play some er, uh, Ogg Vorbis files!

Problem with sound card.........help?

2002-08-31 Thread Matthew Claridge

Hi,

This is my first day using Debian and I've got everything installed and
working and I've even found a load of the configuration stuff, but the
one thing I can't fix is my soundcard. This is my system:

Debian Woody with 2.4.18bf2.4 kernel
Soundblaster Live! soundcard
Running Gnome on top of Enlightenment

Neither the Gnome sound server nor the Esound daemon are able to connect
to the sound device. Errors say that /dev/dsp is inaccessible:
permission denied.

The permissions on /dev/dsp are fine:
crw-rw
root
audio
/dev/dsp

I did try changing that to:
crw-rw-rw-
root
audio
/dev/dsp

just in case, but that didn't have any effect.

I've tried both the sb and sb_lib modules - the sb module gave an error
when I tried loading, but the sb_lib was reported as successful.
modprobe -l shows all the sound modules loaded anyway.

pnpdump doesn't seem to be on the system to try that methodapt
doesn't want to install it either - says it can't find itbut there
must somewhere be a little config program, like etherconf, that will
allow me to set it up manually if it can't detect it...

So what am I doing wrong? Or more to the point, what have I missed when
I set this up? Its got to be something pretty minor that I've forgotten
along the way...I've got far too used to RedHat doing it all for me!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I promise to return the favour
one day when I know how to work things properly ;o)

Thanks in advance,
Matt Claridge

It sounds like you're compiling your own kernel. I'm not sure what
kernel version you're using, but if it's 2.4.18 (or around that one),
you need to go into the Sound option and enable the "VIA82C686 Audio
Codec". If this is what you meant in your post above, did you enable it
as a module or as built-in? If as a module, what does "lsmod" show?

I could never get a VIA VT8233 AC97 sound system working using the
kernel sources alone, and had to resort to using Also. If you want to
got that route you can install the Alsa source with "apt-get install
alsa-source". IIRC, it should put a .tar (or .tgz or .bz2) file in
/usr/src. Unzip/tar it, and then look in the
/usr/src/modules/alsa-driver directory. Read INSTALL. There's about 7
steps in the "Quick Install" section. If you run into difficulties at
that point, holler again.

As root, run "lspci -v" to see what PCI devices you have. This should

Strange problem with sound in Flash plugin (maybe OT)

2001-12-01 Thread Kevin B. McCarty
Hi all,
This is a really weird problem with sound in Flash movies. The problem is
that the sound only plays once in a while. E.g., if I point Mozilla at
the well-known Star Wars Gangsta Rap animation,
http://www.its.caltech.edu/~po/gangsta.swf, and I keep reloading the
animation, I will get sound maybe 40% of the times I reload. The same is
true with Netscape 4.77, although in this case I get sound about 90% of
the time.

I do not have problems with any other sound-playing program: xmms,
playmidi, etc. all work properly every time. Any ideas? Does anyone else
have a Soundblaster AWE32/64 and have [or not have] this problem? I put
all the gory details below.

Please CC: to my email since I'm not subscribed to the list.

Thanks in advance for any help,
Kevin McCarty

0) Hardware
I have a Pentium II running at 266 MHz, and 128M RAM.
The sound card is an ISA-PnP Soundblaster AWE64.

Logfiles are stored in /var/log like /var/log/syslog or
/var/log/messages
Useful information about your hardware is "stored" (not really stored)
in /proc. For example $/sbin/lspci -v reads from /proc/bus/pci and
displays information about you PCI-devices.

I think I wasn't too harsh or something.
But rebooting in order to see if the sound card was detected at
boot-time is about the most dumb reason to reboot I can think of.

No, it's not. You can't unload and load it again if it is not a
module.

Ok, I will try to compile it as module, I just thought it would be better to
have it permanent embeded into the kernel.

Sorry, I'm used to send it to both list and respondant, because
some people are not permanently reading the list. But if that's a
problem to you I won't do that to you in future.

Where does it say so? I have heard from many people that they were told
not to use modules.

I alreadey wrote it.
Compile it a module and try to load it. Check you logfiles if
something goes wrong.

Reboot your linux system and just check the boot message to see if the sound
card is recognized

Re: problem with sound

2001-02-14 Thread c-3
I didn't compile it as a module, because one told me it would be
better to compile it direcect into the kernel. And so I did.
I've compiled the '100% compatible SoundBlaster 16 driver' and a
driver for OPL/3.
So what do I have to do now

Which module did you compile? (I hope you compiled it as a module...)
How did you try to load it? modprobe?
Was it loaded? ($/sbin/lsmod)

If you use a kernel module you simply need to load it (maybe adjust
mixer settings) and it should work. There is certainly no need for a
/etc/sound.conf

problem with sound

2001-02-13 Thread c-3
Hi!

I can't get my sound card to work under linux (SB16).
So far I've recompiled my kernel with sound drivers, what else do I
have to do?
In the howto is a script mentioned to create the /etc/sound.conf but
I cant't find such a script.

Thanks for any help!

Brian Schramm,

I have a cs4232 audio card running Woody. I have fought with my sound
on many of a night. It is working now! Here is a copy of my
/etc/modutils/sndconfig. You do not have to use sndconfig to get it to
work. It is just a little easier.

alias sound-slot-0 cs4232
options sound dmabuf=1
alias midi opl3
options opl3 io=0x388
options cs4232 io=0x534 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=10

If this is a problem try:

modprobe sound
insmod ad1848
insmod uart401
insmod opl3 io=0x388
modprobe cs4232 io=0x534 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=10

I hope this is helpful.

If you know the IRQ, DMA and I/O port settings for your card, run
modconf and set it up so that the cs4232 module is correctly
loaded. If you don't know them, I suggest you apt-get sndconfig, which
I am not sure is available for potato. HTH.
