And either X or GDM then refused to start (I'm not sure which it was). I previously had a debian-testing setup, and added "unstable" then did dist-upgrade [mainly so I can play with gnome-2.6]. Eventually I marked the xserver-xfree86 package as "HOLD" and did "dpkg --configure -a", which seemed to at least get graphics working again. However I'm fairly new to debian, so I really don't know what I'm doing yet. Cheers, Simon -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Upgrading XFree86 on slink for i810 chipset
I need your advice. I have an Intel i810 chipset and the driver requires XFree86 version 3.3.6, but slink has 3.3.2. The driver also requires a kernel module which is for 2.2 kernels, while slink has 2.0 kernels. Additionally, the Intel support site offers the driver, and they say the i810 driver also needs glibc2.1, presumably because they distribute it as a binary file compiled for glibc2.1. But slink only has glibc2.0. First question: Do I really need glibc2.1, or can I build XFree86 and the driver with glibc2.0? I notice two different versions of the 3.3.6 binaries for depending on which version of glibc. Unfortunately I didn't see the i810 driver in the binary directories, but I did find it in the Xfree86 sources. For the best stability, would it be better to try to keep glibc 2.0 and build the driver on slink, or would the best solution to be to upgrade to potato, which has kernel 2.2 and glibc2.1, but is not the stable version and just install the binary from Intel? No matter what I will have to upgrade the kernel to 2.2 to run the agpgart kernel module. Thanks in advance. Br. Chuck Zmudzinski

Hi. I've just reinstalled my system, and something strange happens... (I'm running slink on a Pentium II) I have a S3 Trio 3D/2X video card... That worked with no problems (except that dpkg didn't know I had a new version of X). I tried to install it yesterday, using apt-get to upgrade X... And I had the same problem I have today. If I enter X, of course, I'll have backspace and delete being mapped identically... What could be wrong? Should I hve upgraded to slink 2.1r4 first (does this make any difference? It is what actually does the installing of packages. You can use it on the command line to install and check on packages, see dpkg --help. dselect is a frontend to dpkg. It lets you see the packages and helps the user with conflict resolution. The apt dselect method is a middle man between dselect and dpkg. After you have selected the packages to install it orders them correctly for dpkg so that everything installs cleanly and in the right order. apt-get is a command line tool that is smart about installing packages. If you do and 'apt-get install ' and depends on and it will automatically install and before it installs . See the man pages and documentation of each for further details and options. You might want to try getting the xserver binary from ftp.xfree86.org and using it with your 3.3.3 installation. Yep; I did this on a vanilla slink r1 install last night; downloaded the xserver-svga-3.3.3.1 file (about 1.2MB) and installed it; it worked a treat. Looks like you don't needed all the rest of those files if you're just trying to install the new svga server. Nick -- [nick dyer] [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Put the following in /etc/apt/sources.list (in addition to the normal entries): deb http://ftp.netgod.net/ x/ Run dselect/update, select the Xserver you need and let apt sort out the rest. Upgrading XFree86
I need some advice on how to upgrade the XFree86 files that came with Slink. My problem is that I have a card (STB nVIDIA TNT, 16 Mb of RAM) not listed in the stable version, but listed in the unstable version of X. Newer versions of X that came with Mandrake (in rpm format) work fine; but the older X files that came with Slink don't. I need to use the svga server. Currently, if I use the svga server I get terrible resolution, around 320 X something, but if I use the vga server I can at least get vga resolution. So, I need to upgrade X. But that's where I'm confused. Which files must I upgrade? The Debian FAQ-O-MATIC says to upgrade: xbase, xlib6, xfntbase and the xservers that I'll use. However, these files each have different dependencies that make me wonder whether the above is a complete list. Is it best to download all the X packages at http://www.debian.org/~branden/ and then run dselect? Thanks for any help. I'm almost there with a fully functional Debian. -Dave

upgrading Xfree86
Hi, I am running Debian 2.1 and have X version 3.3.3.2 which doesn't seem to fully support my Trident Providia 9685 video card, so I wanted to upgrade to X version 3.3.3.1. Can anyone please tell me what line I should add to my apt-get source file so that I can run an upgrade of X? Thanks for any help. Shawn Nguyen
