I've uninstalled pulseaudio - that went when I uninstalled Gnome -
sorry for any confusion (and yes, libpulse is indeed still installed).

PS: Don't confuse pulseaudio with libpulse, there's no need to install
libpulse or what ever the package is named.

Btw. I experienced on other distros that PA today is easy to remove and
don't use a dummy package anymore and in some cases it's possible to
really disable it, without any drawbacks and even usage should be better
today.

Re: Action/Multimedia Keys not working Windowmaker

2013-02-12 Thread Ralf Mardorf
I don't know if pulseaudio has to do with your multimedia key issue, I
don't think so, OTOH for this software everything seems to be possible.
However, I neither like multimedia keys, nor pulseaudio.

If you want to get rid of PA, I should be able to help you.

I don't know which of your packages have got hard dependencies to PA,
but you can replace PA with a dummy package, at least in the past, I
never experienced issues when getting rid of it this way.

In the past only gnome-settings-daemon had a hard dependency. Perhaps
it's still the same and you have GDM installed, which still might depend
to the settings daemon. If so, you could recompile the daemon without PA
dependency or you could install another display manager.

To build a dummy package, there is the very nice and not obsolete howto
http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto/ch-helpers.en.html .

Hth,
Ralf

Action/Multimedia Keys not working Windowmaker

2013-02-12 Thread Harvey Kelly
Hello all,

After a full day's hard googling, I posted this to debian-laptop
yesterday, but haven't had a response, so maybe here is a more
appropriate place? Apologies in advance if not.

I'm running Wheezy and the multimedia/volume keys don't work in
Windowmaker (they work fine with Gnome and Xfce4), nor from the
console.

Using xev, it seems they've been mapped correctly (from an Arch wiki
page I ran this command):

xev | grep -A2 --line-buffered '^KeyRelease' | sed -n '/keycode
/s/^.*keycode \([0-9]*\).* (.*, \(.*\)).*$/\1 \2/p'

Which gave me the output:

123 XF86AudioRaiseVolume
122 XF86AudioLowerVolume
121 XF86AudioMute

The Debian wiki (http://wiki.debian.org/Keyboard/MultimediaKeys)
suggests mapping them with xmodmap - but that seems a little
redundant/wrong if xev is telling me they're already mapped (same with
xloadkeys).

I've tried installing/purging everything to do with Gnome (to get rid
of specifically pulseaudio), but that doesn't make any difference - l
even uninstalled ALSA and reinstalled with no joy.

Other function keys like brightness/dimming work fine, it's just the
volume up/down/mute that aren't working.

The card (according to alsamixer is a HDA Intel / Intel Cantiga HDMI).
Any help would be really appreciated.

Harvey

Wow, yeah, it's not worth installing all of that just for this program.

What you should do is file a Request For Packaging (RFP) bug against the wnpp
package. That way hopefully some developer will take the time to create an
official Debian package and upload it to the repositories. (See
http://www.debian.org/devel/wnpp/)

But in the mean time I've built you a package (I'm assuming you are using an

You would first need to convert the RPM package to a deb package using alien

Then you would install the resulting .deb using 'dpkg -i packagename.deb'.

the infamous signal 9 or something .. huh?

I think that wmaker's logic is to write back his in-core config upon
exit .. the problem is that on rare occasions wmaker does not exit
gracefully (very rare .. it's usually when X dies underneath it) and
either he writes garbage .. or dies in the middle of rewriting his
config files .. with rather (un)predictable results .. speculation ..
I've never found the time to learn wmaker properly .. from the inside
that is.

Pity the wmaker mailing list passed away ..

If you feel adventurous one day (and haven't done so already..) you
might want to take a look at GNUstep .. If nothing else, it helps put
the macwindows gui into perspective.

Thanks,
cga

Should be -name (notice the dash). This is what I found:

~/GNUstep/Defaults/WindowMaker

However, now that I have fixed the keyboard bindings by hand, I am not
sure if they are new additions or if there was something else there
before.

I had a problem with that some years ago. The state would get corrupted
and cause a segfault whenever WindowMaker restarted.

That's why I asked them to stick in easily visible separators on the
"winlist" menu so you could tell apart at a glance the windows open on
each workspace. A much better choice imho, since it kept wmaker
"unpolluted". And a lot more effective because the menu lets you display
a window identifier that's basically unlimited in length .. Not so with
the windows-inspired gadget. And I don't even mention the fact that it
breaks the wmaker/next interface .. at least aesthetically. After all
the work and passion he put into recreating the NeXT interface, I don't
understand how A. Kojima could put up with that.

Do a "locate WindowMaker" .. that's the name of the main config file
.. case-sensitive .. If you don't have updatedb set up as yet .. you
could do a "find / name WindowMaker -print".

It's a good idea to know where you config file live.

OK.

I don't do that because I like wmaker to come up with just the couple of
things I need at startup. If I set this option .. the next wmaker
session might restart any tentative garbage I have in the current
session.

Try to locate wmaker's config files and copy them to a backup
directory. One of the rare weaknesses I have found with wmaker is a
marked propensity to wipe their contents.

But then after losing them a few times and recreating them by hand --
twenty desktops .. 50+ dockapps .. nice bloated config .. now that I

I finally figured it out.

It turns out that at some point, my keyboard configurations got trashed
(I am willing to bet this is an artifact of the upgrade from Sarge to
Etch, but I can't prove it). Anyhow, I went back and manually
reassigned all the shortcuts. At the time, I did not think anything of
it, but all the shortcuts were getting assigned like this:

alt+m -> Mod1+Mod2+m

When I tried modifying some them in wmakerconf, I actually noticed it
again. I realized that asside from alt, I was not pressing any other
modifiers. I then noticed that my numlock was on. I didn't think it
could be related, but I turned it off. Then I fixed the shortcuts so
that instead of Mod1+Mod2 they all used only Mod1. After logging out
and back in, everything seems to work the way it did before.

I am not sure how things got into the state that they did, but it is now
fixed.

Thanks for all your help.

Yes, I'm still on sarge and running wmaker 0.80.2.

So I guess this was changed with the newer 0.90.x versions ..

Actually when you do get it to work you're in for a "treat" ..

WindowMaker now has the Windows gadget popup when you Alt-Tab right in
the middle of your screen and has an icon for each window on your
current workspace. Completely ruins the look and feel of wmaker, imho.

I'll try to boot into etch later tonight .. but in the meantime ..
since I vaguely recall you had also problems with F12 for the root menu
.. etc .. you may want to locate your "WindowMaker" config file and
check in there the keyboard shortcut definitions. See if they are what
you expect. The file used to be in ~/GNUstep/Defaults/ but that may
have changed with the new version.

If you edit the file, do not do with wmaker up and running .. At best
your changes will be overwritten when you exit wmaker .. at worst your
config files will be wiped out. Do it from a linux console - eg.

I imagine you have bounced your wmaker session since you tweaked your
keyboard shorthcuts. Otherwise be aware that there is an ancient bug in
wmaker where you need to issue a "Save Session" .. should be in the
"Commands" submenu .. before any changes you made via WPrefs are applied
to your current session. Doesn't make sense but I have confirmed this
many times.

If nothing comes of the above and unless I find something useful my end
with the newer version, you may also want to try the alternative
configuration GUI .. ie. wmakerconf. Probably won't make any
difference .. but it may yell at your for some reason or other and that
may shed some light on this affair ..

Thanks,

Here is what I have:

 - Disable miniwindows (icons for minimized windows). For use with
   KDE/GNOME (unchecked)
 - Do not set non-WindowMaker specific parameters (do not use xset).
   (unchecked)
 - Automatically save session when exiting Window Maker. (checked)
 - Use SaveUnder in window frames, icons, menus and other objects.
   (unchecked)
 - Disable confirmation panel for the kill command. (checked)
 - Disable selection animation for selected icons. (uncheked)
 - Smooth font edges (needs restart). (checked)

None of the tabs have anything about "windoze style cycling". I seem to
recall seeing that option a long time ago (maybe in the Woody version of
WindowMaker). However, it is not there now.

In WPrefs.app, on the last tab to the right you have something that says
"enable Windoze (sic) style cycling" that needs to be checked. Sorry if
you've already done that .. I deleted your original post.

Here is what I have:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "kbd"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"

I still can't alt+tab to switch or any of the other issues I mentioned.

I use also WindowMaker and I encountered this error too.

If I can rememer correctly, I solve this problem so so I reconfigure
xserver-xorg and set up again my keyboard.

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

So I have in my xorg.conf in the Section "InputDevice" this:

Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "kbd"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "hu,hr,cs"
Option "XkbVariant""nodeadkeys"

and now I can use alt+tab on my Hungarian keyboard to switch
between windows and alt+# to switch to the approppriate workspace.

Etch upgrade and keyboard in WindowMaker

2007-04-15 Thread Roberto C . Sánchez
Hello all. I upgraded my workstation from Sarge to Etch this weekend.
The biggest annoynce I have encountered is that my keyboard is "broken"
in WindowMaker. That is, alt+tab no longer switches between windows.
F12 no longer brings up the menu. F11 no longer brings up the window
list and alt+# (where # is a number 0-9) no longer switches to the
appropriate workspace. I have gone into WPrefs and tried rebinding the
key combinations. However, this still does not seem to work. Has
anyone else encountered something similar? If so, can this problem be
solved?

Not as far as I know.

Should be under the keyboard configuration thing.

"Focus next window" - "Focus previous window" should be checked and have
respectively "Alt+Tab" and "Alt+Shift+Tab" as the keyboard shortcuts.

You may also want to make sure "Raise window when switching focus with
keyboard" under "Miscellaneous Ergonomic Preferences" is checked.
That's under the fifth "tab" (or icon, rather) from the left.

What version are you running?

So how do you fix it this time?

I lost all my key settings (eg: Alt-Tab to rotate windows focus) again.
But I can't seem to find the setting in the Prefs window anymore.
I doubt WindowMaker removed the feature...

. Look for saved/renamed copies of your old wmaker config files ..
possible in the ~/GNUstep/ tree.

These are the files you should be looking for:

WindowMaker
WMRootMenu
WMSound (optional)
WMState
WMWindowAttributes
WPrefs

. If the upgrade did not save the old files, restore them from a backup
... ~/GNUstep/Defaults should be where you should be looking for them.

. Always have backups of ~/GNUstep/Defaults handy. I have found wmaker
to be rock-solid over the years but it does have a "tendency" to wipe
out its config files once in a while. It happened to me a couple of
times after a brutal exit from my X session .. and that's how I got sick
or re-configuring from scratch.

And guess what .. now that I have an easy-to-locate backup of these
file in ~/GNUstep/Defaults-Backup/ .. I haven't had a problem this last
couple of years .. Go figure .. :-)

In any event, I was under the impression that debian never touched
anything in your home directory .. so I have a feeling this may not be
directly related to your upgrade ..

ctrl)? That works for me using gdm + gnome.

Hi!

I don't know since when Ctrl+Alt+F7 does not bring me back to
WindowMaker any more. Once I switch from WindowMaker to console by
hitting Ctrl+Alt+F1 ~ F6, I lose my GUI forever and killing process
xinit is my only "solution" to this problem.

Helps will be much appreciated.

You can run "xev" from a windowmaker terminal to check if your F7 key is
still registering key press/release events. (That is not exactly the
same situation as when you try to switch back to vt7, but you will see
whether the key is active at all.)

Every key stroke from F1 to F12 triggers an event, but F7 and F9 do not

How embarrassed I am! Maybe some keys on my keyboard are broken as a
result of water drops on it days ago when it was raining outside as well

Well it's definitely not the power cuts.. I don't run xorg .. so my
only suggestion would be checking with the folks on the wmaker list.

Note that I would still recommend having a backup of the wmaker config
files.. Corrupt config files is the only problem I have (rarely) run
into in five years' using wmaker.

I run a heavily customized wmaker with tons of dockapps and I always
keep a backup copy of wmaker's config files - ~/GNUstep/Defaults/*
because I have had a couple of problems with these files being
corrupted.. on one occasion I had to do a hard reset of the laptop..
another may have been due to a power cut.. I seems that under stress
wmaker panics and tries to rewrite these files before exiting.. and
there ya go..

I would create a test userid.. su to root.. useradd.. passwd.. etc.
login as this new user and if your manage to start wmaker this would
confirm your wmaker config is toast.

I don't know enough about debian to recommend what to do next.

If you have a recent backup of your home directory you should:

1. backup the current (corrupt?) ~/GNUstep tree
2. restore the one from the backup
3. start wmaker - see if it fixes your problem

If you don't have a usable backup of your home directory:

1. backup your ~/GNUstep tree
2. copy the test user's ~/GNUstep (and do the necessary chown's)
3. copy whatever is in ~/GNUstep/Library/WindoMaker from the backup
4. start wmaker under your id and customize manually..

You could also try and take a look at the files in ~/GNUstep/Defaults
and see if you can figure out what's been corrupted - some of them
might be intact.. I think in my case the WindowMaker file was empty and
the WMState file had been truncated to about half of its original size..

As they say, YMMV..

Also, the paths above are correct in my sarge setup but since you
mention xorg I suspect you may be running a more recent version of
wmaker (0.90?).. so you may have to adjust .. I think they changed
something with the more recent version.

Lastly, you could also wait a couple of hours.. days.. and maybe
someone who knows debian administration will come up with a cleaner
solution.

HTH

Thanks,

cga

PS. Needless to say - do *not* attempt to edit wmaker's config files
when your are in a wmaker session. At best your changes will be
overwritten when wmaker exits.. At worst..?

I'm running debian testing.

2 days ago, there was a massive upgrade to the xorg system. Everything
appeared to be installed & configured correctly.

With the heat in Southern California, we had some power drops. Now when
I try to start windowmaker, it starts, but quickly exits showing a
request stating something like;

Windowmaker has caught a sig 11 error, please try again, exit with
core, or try another window manager.

If I choose exit, no core is generated, but WM will not function.

Any ideas?

Since my post, I have installed gnustep and windowmaker and am loving
it. It's snappy, fast, and lightweight. I'm also partial to the
vertical taskbar setup which WMaker seems to favor.

GNUMail.app is actually a pretty slick email client, and it of course
is perfectly integrated with GNUstep.

If you're using GDM as your login manager, you should be able to

One of my boxes is exactly the same. It was running woody, now it's
running sarge (2.4). Worked like a charm with woody & windowmaker. Now
with sarge & windowmaker, I need to wait some minutes (maybe 5?) to
load X. Of course, Firefox and OOo take some time to start, too. But
it's useable. After start, it works quite acceptably. In fact, I'm
writing this on it just now, even if the other box is an Athlon 1800/
1 GB RAM... Not tried 2.6 kernel on the PII box, so I don't know about
wether it's faster than 2.4. If anyone knows about it, please let me
know.

Try sylpheed. It's ligthweight, and feature plenty. You could miss that,
even if URLs and addres are not higlighted, you can click on them to see
web pages on firefox or reply a mail. If you need a GUI file manager,
try endeavourII. Synaptic will work fine.

Not much to learn/understand. It is very lightweight, has a decent GUI
configuration tool and is very easy to use.

I formerly used T-bird, but have since switched to mutt-ng, since it is
now (or very soon will be) in Debian and provides all the features I
need, including some that T-bird lacked.

Synaptic works just fine. In fact, WindowMaker integrates GNOME, KDE,
GTK, Motif, Qt, etc apps very well. Personally, I like aptitude better
since I can use from any place I can get shell access (which is more
places than from where I can get VNC/XForwarding).

The GUI is not really the issue. It is the apps. Heavy apps (Moz
suite, OpenOffice, etc) will tax your system. A lean GUI will help that
by freeing up more resources for the apps.

If you install wmaker, it will setup the option to log into WindowMaker
from GDM. This happens automatically.

I had a neighbor that worked at IBM back when a bunch of kooks claimed
that were going to make random access storage media (today we call them

slowly convincing this former neighbor of the virutes of F/OSS.

1. Start by using WPrefs to setup various things about WMaker. It does what
you want -- relieve you from editing config files. Some things are better
configured through wmakerconf, though. Wmakerconf needs to be installed
separately.

2. I'll just listen along. I am also attempting to switch from KMail.

3. Synaptic will run, too. As I see it, you don't need to change. However,
aptitude will also work perfectly in an xterm or the like.

4. I would definitely not say so. I've run KDE 3.3 rather smoothly on a 233MHz
P2 with 56MB of RAM.

5. It would be edited in your ~/.xinitrc. However, I have found it to be
enough to edit ~/.xsession, so that it contains the line ``wmaker''.

Hi,

Based on advice on this list to maestro I'm considering switching to
windowmaker:

> I no longer have time to spend hours tweaking config files, and thus

> bulky for my PIII-650 / 320MB workstation

I'm even resource-poorer with a PII-400/128MB workstation. I tried KDE,
switched to GNOME, and now am investigating windowmaker. Can anyone give me
pointers to information about what to expect? Specifically,

1. resources to learn/understand windowmaker
2. email client that works well (and lightly) in that environment (love KMail,
but the overhead is too much on my system)
3. package manager, I've been using Synaptic. Am I right in assuming that
aptitude is the way to go in a windowmaker environment or am I reduced to the
command line?
4. am I just too optimistic that my old system is adequate to run some kind of
GUI on linux?
5. where do I learn about how to change from booting into a GNOME dm to login
to a windowmaker dm?

FYI I'm a dinosaur that learned programming in FORTRAN with punch cards in the
'70s. Even in the '80s 128MB of RAM was a supercomputer and people (from HP
if I recall correctly) were writing papers claiming that 50Mhz CPUs were
impossible.

Windows should be sized to the dimensions last used, in most cases.

Suggestion:

   - Open the application.
   - Check that the window isn't set as "maximized".
   - Size the window to the dimensions desired.
   - Close the application.
   - Restart the application.

...are your windows sized as you want?

Another option is to bind a hotkey sequence to the "maximize window
vertically" function. In my case, does this (set this
through the WPrefs utility). So if I get a small window a quick tap
fills my monitor vertically. Very useful. I've also got set
to maximize fully, though that's something used less often.

Peace.

Window sizing on Windowmaker

2004-12-06 Thread Piers Kittel
Hello all,
Have used windowmaker a lot for quite a while on my work and home
computers, but one thing really bugs me is that only a few certain
window, when opened, is sized in crazy sizes. For example, if I open an
email in Thunderbird, the window takes up the full width but only 1cm or
so high, but the other windows (such as writing an new email etc) always
starts up maximised. Another ex, on my home computer, when Thunderbird
starts up, it is about 1cm wide, and a couple inches tall - and no
matter what I do, I can't get those windows to start up maximised? I
know my examples are Thunderbird centric, but it affects other programs.

Any ideas anyone?
Thanks very much for your hellp in advance

All I can do is confirm I have the same behaviour. No idea how to fix
it, but perhaps try another X server? I have had no such problems with
the cygwin/x11 server.

WindowMaker w/ Exceed Colors Washed Out Green

2004-06-15 Thread Michael B Allen
Thanks for answering my last question now I have a hard one.

If I run WindowMaker with the Exceed X server the icons, menus, doc,
dialogs and so on are green. Meaning the color is all washed out. There's
not red. Doesn't happen with GNOME or KDE and it doesn't happen logged
into the machine locally. I've tried switching GDM to KDM without luck.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

What package contains file X? (was: Unable to compile Launch.app (WindowMaker))

Some possibilities:

- apt-file ("apt-get install apt-file", info: "apt-cache show apt-file")

- the online search at <http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages>

- dpkg -S / dlocate (only when package is already installed)

Several alternatives to these ways exist.

I am using WindowMaker 0.80.1-8. I downloaded the Launch.app (part of stepmaker) -
http://stepmaker.sourceforge.net/launch.html - source and tried compiling it.

Basically, gcc is complaining that WMaker.h cannot be located. I looked through the
available packages, and I cannot find something like wmaker-dev. Is there a package
with WindowMaker sources?

Thank you in advance.

I have noticed that this has to do with locales also. If I have
latin-15, then forget it, several window managers (afterstep, fvwm,
etc) will refuse with the same crap. Windowmaker
refuses also, but is the less picky.
Don know any more.

It may be a WMaker problem
Install wmakerconf (apt-get install wmakerconf).
launch it and go to Appearance Tab, you can choose the font for each
component.

icewm and windowmaker

2003-11-28 Thread Antony Gelberg
Hi all,

I've just installed windowmaker to have a look at it. (Running
unstable.) I was using icewm before. In order to get windowmaker to
start, I have to edit
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/50xfree86-common_determine-startup - specifically to
change:

  if [ -x /usr/bin/x-session-manager ]; then
REALSTARTUP=x-session-manager
  elif [ -x /usr/bin/x-window-manager ]; then

to:

#  if [ -x /usr/bin/x-session-manager ]; then
#REALSTARTUP=x-session-manager
  if [ -x /usr/bin/x-window-manager ]; then

This is because x-session-manager is provided by the installed
icewm-session:

$ sudo update-alternatives --config x-session-manager

There is only 1 program which provides x-session-manager
(/usr/bin/icewm-session). Nothing to configure.

I don't really care, as it works, then again I don't think that editing
this file is advisable for the integrity of my system. Did I miss the
Debian Way here, or is it a bug / one of those things?

close some apps, I can generally get things squared away.
This also appears to be resolution dependent -- the more screenspace you
have, the more apps you can run. Right now I've got around 55 windows
open, on 8 workspaces. Pretty typical.
What I ended up doing was apt-getting the source package and building
with debugging symbols. I was able to attach to the process, using GDB
from a VT, and find the source of the problem. Marcello emailed me when
they committed the chage upstream, and I tried out the CVS version,
but the bug is now in a different place.
It's on the back burner for me ATM since I am defending my thesis next.
At least it still works in FreeBSD when I boot that :-)

My suggestion: run X bare (either 'X' or 'startx xterm') from console.
Launch windowmaker using strace, and log output. When it crashes next,
look at the strace log. Which is likely to be very, very long.

One issue I've found with recent (0.7x, 0.8x) WindowMaker releases is
that if you get enough application windows up, _if_ WindowMaker needs to
restart, then it crashes when switching to workspace #1. Best I can
tell, there are too many tiles for it to deal with gracefully. If I
close some apps, I can generally get things squared away.

This also appears to be resolution dependent -- the more screenspace you

Segfaulting WindowMaker

2003-11-11 Thread Roberto Sanchez
I had been using Daniel Stone's unofficial Xfree86 4.3 for several
months (which is no longer available). Today I needed to compile
a program for one of my classes which requires that I have the
libxaw7-dev packages installed. Of course since Stone's build is
no longer avilable, I had to update to the experimental Xfree86
from the Debian repository.
Of course, my system got seriously b0rked in the process since I
use the proprietary ATi drivers for my Radeon. Anyhow, now WIndow
Maker segfaults whenevery I start it. I get a little window that
says "Window Maker has received a signal 11." Then I get three options
in a little dropdown list:
-Leave a core file and abort
-Attempt to restart
-Start an alternate window manager
The abort option just sends me back out to gdm. The restart option
just redisplays the dialog and forces me to choose again. The last
option starts twm. In twm, I get my background image from Window
Maker but no dock apps.
This is very strange, but I am not sure where to go from here.
I have already uninstalled (purged) all the Window Maker packages
and reinstalled them. I have also tried downgrading and get the same
exact results.

Hi Hendrik,

Make sure your application is closed. Open a terminal and adjust
~/GNUstep/Defaults/WMWindowAttributes with your favorite editor (vim of
course `;-). There you can find the block defining the attributes for
your application and change them the way you want. Save your changes and
restart the application.

windowmaker

2003-08-28 Thread Martynas Domarkas
Hello,

I'm using WindowMaker for 3 years. I allways used our (lithuanian)
charset ISO88598-13 (without problems), and now moved to UTF-8. All the programs are
working OK, including mutt-utf8. But WindowMaker doe's not show symbols in window
titles corectly.

In examle mozilla sets window titlebar text to tag in html code,
but other than ascii characters are unreadable.

uxterm (xterm -u8) lets set title. The place where I set non ascii
symbols seems empty.

This is what I use for WindowTitle:
WindowTitleFont = "-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-15-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1";
Yes, this font exist in my font list (xlsfonts) :-).
(The same font is used for uxterm and it works.)

Locale:
LC_ALL=lt_LT.UTF-8
It is generated with locale-gen and other applications accept it.

Can enybody explain me how can I make WindowMaker work with unicode in
titlebar? :-)

Regards,
Martynas

You can open a run box with the default Debian Window Maker config by this
sequence:

F12-r-Enter

3 keys, but still quick.

PS- Sorry If I broke the threading, I'm replying from a digest mail. I

If you are using /usr/bin/WPrefs to configure windowmaker and to add
your own menu items you can use the following to get a "Run" box. You
would then add a keyboard shortcut to the menu item. I use "CTRL-ALT r".

This is all on one line:

x-terminal-emulator -geometry 90x40+115+50 -title "Program Run" -e %a(Run..,Program
and Parameters:)

[ot] executing commands from windowmaker

2003-08-14 Thread Elie De Brauwer
Hi there, sorry for this little of topic question but I have a little
windowmaker question and I haven't found a solution to it yet.

One of the biggest disadvantages in windowmaker is (imho) that it is
unpossible to execute a command by keyboard in a speedy way. In KDE for
example you have ALT+F2 that pops up a nice 'execute command' box, you enter
the command press enter and the application starts.

Is anyone away of a windowmaker alternative ?

2003-07-28 Thread Adam Bogacki
Yay ! It works !

I had some trouble with themes not installing correctly - I often had to
manually put files into their individual
directories and some simply did not work when installed. Also,
wmakerconf kept crashing. Once I had manually (!)
deleted them I slept on it and this morning ran /genmenu/, then
/wmakerconf/ - and it worked !

To make it even sweeter, the WMaker menu updates from Geir Thorstein
Kristiansen's (gtk's) website also worked.

Now to get Mutt going again ...

After genmenu runs, you cannot edit it manually, it has to be done
through wmakerconf.
BTW, why are you running as root? Not a good idea, too many bad things
can happen, If you run as a "normal' user, the worse that can happen, is
just screwing up one account, your way is to mess the whole system.
If it does not find your program(s), then from the shell type "which
application(s)", and note the path. From within wmakerconf, find the
"folder" you want your application(s) to be stored in, and click add,
then copy/paste your application(s) there. A custom windowmaker menu.

Home come to think of it, how does the WMRootMenu file look after a
fresh run of genmenu, also which version of genmenu. Also check your
console for errors about incorrect proplist format etc. Im not sure if
this belongs on the debian list since my genmenu script doesnt come with
debian to begin with. Anyway if this is a genmenu bug I would be able to
see if the WMRootMenu file is hosed.

Hi, I am the genmenu author. I am unable to reproduce this in Debian
sid. I cant really guess at whats wrong here without more info. It could
be something weird with your system. Does the regular debian menus work
in WindowMaker?

I found it via freshmeat. It's precompiled, and can be placed anywhere.
I place in ~/home/bin, so it creates my personalized windowmaker menu.
That, along with wmakerconf, you can create your own menu items, and
sort them any way you choose.

I would suggest to take the following steps:
apt-get install wmakerconf
then run the little program, it has a nice graphical interface, it allows you to
manipulate the menus.
If this doesn't help, check this site

I couldn't figure out how to resize the windows in windowmaker, and this site shows

After this, the only thing that was stopping me from choosing window maker as my

Re: windowmaker not showing icons for running applications

2003-07-12 Thread K S Sreeram
Hi

The pixmap path and the icon path can be used for wmaker specific images
for the various applications.

But doesnt the application itself choose an icon at runtime, when it is
getting started. That icon doesnt get used by wmaker, whereas in other
window managers (icewm, kde etc), it works.

For example, if i am building a custom application, wmaker wont show the
icon set from the application whereas the other window managers display
it. Is there someway to make wmaker use the icon set by the application
at runtime?

Maybe your pixmap paths are not setup correctly. I've the same problem
for some of my programs, but in most times it works correctly. You can
set you pixmap paths in the "wmakerconf" tool or by hand with an
editor in $HOME/GNUStep/Defaults/Windowmaker.

There are two entrys: Pixmap- and Iconpath. Iam not shure, which path is
to set correctly, but i think, that the iconpath must be verified.
