Bug#855457: ITP: signal-cli -- commandline and dbus interface for WhisperSystems/libsignal-service-java
Control: close 855457 There are two blockers to packaging signal-cli for Debian GNU/Linux. It depends on libsignal-service-java and libsignal-protocol-java, both of which cannot be packaged because: * the upstream of libsignal-service-java is not amicable[1] * the upstream of libsignal-protocol-java[2] is the same as for libsignal-service-java and therefore presumably equally not amicable [1] https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=890915#10 [2] https://github.com/signalapp/libsignal-protocol-java signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
Bug#890915: ITP: libsignal-service-java -- A Java library for communicating via Signal
Control: close 890915 As suggested in the "Debian New Maintainers' Guide", the upstream was asked how they feel regarding Debian Packaging. Although the response was polite and quick, it was a clear refusal to participate or help[2]. I'm closing this ITP but it should also be noted that another upstream for the same code base exist and is amicable[3]. It could be a viable alternative in the future. Bug#890915: ITP: libsignal-service-java -- A Java library for communicating via Signal
Package: wnpp Owner: Loic Dachary (OuoU) <l...@debian.org> Severity: wishlist * Package name: libsignal-service-java Version : 2.7.1 Upstream Author : Open Whisper Systems * URL or Web page : https://github.com/signalapp/libsignal-service-java * License : GPLv3 Description : A Java library for communicating via Signal A Java/Android library for communicating with the Signal messaging service. The Signal encryption protocol is a stateful protocol, so libsignal-service users need to implement the storage interface SignalProtocolStore, which handles load/store of your key and session information to durable media. This library is useful, for instance, to implement CLI tools to dialog with the Signal servers such as signal-cli[0]. About the portability to Debian GNU/Linux: the library is not portable to Debian GNU/Linux as-is. However patches are available to make that possible[1]. The are consistently maintained and released under the same license by their author. About the license: I assume the license is GPLv3 because https://github.com/signalapp/libsignal-service-java/blob/master/LICENSE contains it. The android/build.gradle and java/build.gradle files further confirm this licensing choice. The string gpl (case insensitive) is not found anywhere else in the sources. However, the README claims it is AGPLv3 and this inconsistency was reported in 2017 but not addressed[2]. I'm inclined to think this is not a blocking problem and that we can reasonably conclude the library is licensed under the GPLv3. I would be interested in the opinion of people with more experience in asserting the conditions under which a software is actually releases when confronted to similar inconsistencies. Each players is given seven cards and are required to pick one that best matches the author's sentence. Bug#441302: ITP: getxpath -- extract a value from a XML file using a XPATH expression
Guus Sliepen [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: That is NOT a description. That is a copy of the manual page. A description is a few paragraphs describing what the program does, if it is a command line tool or a graphical user interface, maybe what its strengths and weaknesses are, but not which arguments you can specify on the command line. Have a look at the description of other packages to see how it should look like. getxpath extracts a value from a xmlfile element or attribute based on an xpath expression. By default the return value is the selector . unless the selector argument was given. xmlfile can be a URL or a pathname. This is an extremely simple command and yet complex enough that you don't want to type it all over again each time you need it. Bug#278174: cal3d cvs package
Michael Koch writes: Am Montag, 25. Oktober 2004 12:30 schrieb Loic Dachary: Michael Koch writes: Would it be an idea for you to not use a cal3d-cvs package and directly use the normal cal3d package and update it to some recent CVS thats known to work. I don't want such a package in sarge/testing yet but this should be easy to handle. As you are a cal3d developer you could easily fix reported bugs in CVS and we could update the package then. This will benefit all users of cal3d I think. What do you think about this ? If the cal3d package is based on CVS AND has a release number (such as 0.9.1 or 0.9.2), how can people know that it comes from the CVS at a given date ? Also I think this would contradict the debian policy for naming CVS based packages. Maybe I misunderstood you ? extra cvs packages are normally only made when a released version has to be in the archive and CVS has some major improvemnts. IMO keeping two versions in the archive is bloat in this case (not because of size). We need only one version of cal3d and all apps should use the best version they can get. As you said CVS has less bugs and some speed improvements. We can name the package like this: 0.9.1+cvs20041025 That is easily handable and all users see at first look that it includes CVS improvements. I'm Ok with this. Now we have to figure out which version the library should have for this package. Do you have a preference or a suggestion ? Bug#277084: ITP: poker-eval -- poker hand evaluator library
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist * Package name : poker-eval Version : 122.0 Upstream Author : Loic Dachary [EMAIL PROTECTED], Michael Maurer [EMAIL PROTECTED] * URL : http://download.gna.org/underware/debian/ (look for files with poke-eval in the name) * License : GPL Description : This package is a free (GPL) toolkit for writing programs which simulate or analyze poker games. Who is the target audience? Mostly programmers. The programs are all written in C, but as time goes on, bindings may be added for Java, VB, Perl, or other languages. There are Java Native Interface (JNI) wrappers around some of the library functions. There are some demo programs which illustrate the features of the library, but which are not (at this time) flexible enough to be used without modification by end-users except for the most basic of simulations. Where did it come from? Cliff Matthews wrote and released (under GPL) a fast poker hand evaluator several years ago, and this code is derived from that work. It has been improved over the years, with contributions from Mat Hostetter, Keith Miyake, Brian Goetz, Michael Maurer, and others. Most recently, the code has been repackaged and cleaned up substantially, so it is more suitable for general use and extension to other types of poker games. This code is now maintained by Brian Goetz ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and improvements and suggestions can be sent to him. The latest version of the software can be found at www.pokersource.org.
