Indeed, it's a simple package with low variance.

You could start with fixing the only warning there is

Bug#855457: ITP: signal-cli -- commandline and dbus interface for WhisperSystems/libsignal-service-java

2018-02-24 Thread Loic Dachary
Control: close 855457

There are two blockers to packaging signal-cli for Debian GNU/Linux. It depends
on libsignal-service-java and libsignal-protocol-java, both of which cannot be
packaged because:

* the upstream of libsignal-service-java is not amicable[1]
* the upstream of libsignal-protocol-java[2] is the same as for
libsignal-service-java and therefore presumably equally not amicable

As suggested in the "Debian New Maintainers' Guide", the upstream was asked how
they feel regarding Debian Packaging. Although the response was polite and
quick, it was a clear refusal to participate or help[2].

I'm closing this ITP but it should also be noted that another upstream for the
same code base exist and is amicable[3]. It could be a viable alternative in
the future.

2018-02-20 Thread Loic Dachary
Package: wnpp
Owner: Loic Dachary (OuoU) <l...@debian.org>
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: libsignal-service-java
  Version : 2.7.1
Upstream Author : Open Whisper Systems
* URL or Web page : https://github.com/signalapp/libsignal-service-java
* License : GPLv3
Description : A Java library for communicating via Signal

A Java/Android library for communicating with the Signal messaging
service. The Signal encryption protocol is a stateful protocol, so
libsignal-service users need to implement the storage interface
SignalProtocolStore, which handles load/store of your key and session
information to durable media. This library is useful, for instance,
to implement CLI tools to dialog with the Signal servers such as
signal-cli[0].

About the portability to Debian GNU/Linux: the library is not portable
to Debian GNU/Linux as-is. However patches are available to make that
possible[1]. The are consistently maintained and released under the same
license by their author.

About the license: I assume the license is GPLv3 because
https://github.com/signalapp/libsignal-service-java/blob/master/LICENSE
contains it. The android/build.gradle and java/build.gradle files
further confirm this licensing choice. The string gpl (case insensitive)
is not found anywhere else in the sources. However, the README claims it
is AGPLv3 and this inconsistency was reported in 2017 but not
addressed[2]. I'm inclined to think this is not a blocking problem and
that we can reasonably conclude the library is licensed under the
GPLv3. I would be interested in the opinion of people with more
experience in asserting the conditions under which a software is
actually releases when confronted to similar inconsistencies.

I would like to start sharing responsibilities from the beginning instead
of waiting to burn out. I'm motivated and eager to make sure this
package will be in good shape for users to discover this game. With
co-maintainers it stands a better chance to keep being actively
maintained in the years to come.

Here is the description of the game, as a reminder:

A player (who we will call the author) creates a new game.
He chooses a card, picks a word or a sentence to describe it
 and invites players to participate.
Each players is given seven cards and are required to pick
one that best matches the author's sentence.
Once enough players have chosen a card, the author displays all chosen
cards and the players try to figure out which one is the author's.
The author wins if at least one of the players guesses right, but not all
of them do. The winners are the author and the players who guessed right.
If the author loses, all the other players win.

Bug#527162: RFP: gitorious -- distributed code collaboration tool

Description : distributed code collaboration tool

Traditional code- and project forges offer many great things and has
without a question helped developers of open source software. However,
there's always the issue of long-term maintainability; as humans we
always get distracted, busy and or just plain tired of working with
things in the long run.

Distributed version control provides a way around this by making
everyones copy a full repository, so if people like someone elses
stuff better, or that someone else is actively maintaining the project
they can just pull from that person instead of the official
repository. And if the project maintainer decides to, he can pull
those changes into his mainline branch. That's what makes open source
great.

Bug#441301: moreutils: url2file -- wget a URL into a file an print it

2007-09-23 Thread Loic Dachary
Sebastian Harl [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Did you have a look at dog(1)? As far as I can see, dog is superior to
 url2file.

  Hi,

I love dog. And url2file could use dog instead of wget. But url2file
is designed to allow this onliner:

   diff $(url2file http://foo.com/) $(url2file http://bar.com/)

The idea is not that url2file prints the content of the file but the
name of the local file.

That usage is what makes url2file unique. I would *love* to discover
that another command line already does the job. The closest I found was
kioexec. But connecting to the X display is often an embarassement.

  Cheers,

Bug#441302: ITP: getxpath -- extract a value from a XML file using a XPATH expression

2007-09-08 Thread Loic Dachary
Guus Sliepen [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

That is NOT a description. That is a copy of the manual page. A
description is a few paragraphs describing what the program does, if it
is a command line tool or a graphical user interface, maybe what its
strengths and weaknesses are, but not which arguments you can specify on
the command line. Have a look at the description of other packages to
see how it should look like.

getxpath extracts a value from a xmlfile element or attribute
based on an xpath expression. By default the return value is
the selector . unless the selector argument was given.

xmlfile can be a URL or a pathname.

This is an extremely simple command and yet complex enough that you
don't want to type it all over again each time you need it.

Do we really need a new package for a 10 lines script ?
Can't that be included in another one ?

Maybe it could, do you have specific ideas ?

 sounds like an good idea.

And with my libxslt maintainer hat on, I must say I'm not against it.

So Loic, if you're okay with the idea, please reassign the bug as a
wishlist against xsltproc. It would also be helpful if you'd attach the
script and the xslt to the bug.

Thanks a lot. It turns out that getxpath is redundant with xmlstarlet

Would it be an idea for you to not use a cal3d-cvs package and
directly use the normal cal3d package and update it to some
recent CVS thats known to work. I don't want such a package in
sarge/testing yet but this should be easy to handle. As you are
a cal3d developer you could easily fix reported bugs in CVS and
we could update the package then. This will benefit all users of
 cal3d I think.

What do you think about this ?

If the cal3d package is based on CVS AND has a release number
(such as 0.9.1 or 0.9.2), how can people know that it comes from
the CVS at a given date ? Also I think this would contradict the
debian policy for naming CVS based packages.

Maybe I misunderstood you ?

extra cvs packages are normally only made when a released version has
to be in the archive and CVS has some major improvemnts. IMO keeping
two versions in the archive is bloat in this case (not because of
size). We need only one version of cal3d and all apps should use the
best version they can get. As you said CVS has less bugs and some
  speed improvements.

We can name the package like this:

  0.9.1+cvs20041025

That is easily handable and all users see at first look that it
  includes CVS improvements.

I'm Ok with this. Now we have to figure out which version the
library should have for this package. Do you have a preference or a
suggestion ?

Do you mean package version or library version (aka soname) ?
For the second feel free to choose a unique one.

Ok. What about -version-info 10:0:0 for the CVS version ?
It reminds of the fact that the last release has a 9 in it. Of course,
as time passes these versions will diverge but it might be nice to
start with something somewhat related to the release number.

* License : GPL
Description :

This package is a free (GPL) toolkit for writing programs which
simulate or analyze poker games.

Who is the target audience?

Mostly programmers. The programs are all written in C, but as time
goes on, bindings may be added for Java, VB, Perl, or other languages.
There are Java Native Interface (JNI) wrappers around some of the
library functions. There are some demo programs which illustrate the
features of the library, but which are not (at this time) flexible
enough to be used without modification by end-users except for the
most basic of simulations.

Where did it come from?

Cliff Matthews wrote and released (under GPL) a fast poker hand
evaluator several years ago, and this code is derived from that work.
It has been improved over the years, with contributions from Mat
Hostetter, Keith Miyake, Brian Goetz, Michael Maurer, and others.
Most recently, the code has been repackaged and cleaned up
substantially, so it is more suitable for general use and extension to
other types of poker games. This code is now maintained by Brian
Goetz ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and improvements and suggestions can be sent
to him. The latest version of the software can be found at
www.pokersource.org.

I've been maintaining an openscenegraph package for some month
now. It is available at http://download.gna.org/underware/debian/ (look

I'm willing to push it into Debian but if someone else is about

unac is a C library and command that removes accents from a string.
For instance the string été will become ete. It provides a command
line interface that removes accents from a input flow or a string
given in argument (unaccent command). In the library function and the
command, the charset of the input is specified as an argument. The
input is converted to UTF-16 using iconv(3), accents are stripped and
the result is converted back to the original charset. The iconv --list
command on GNU/Linux will show all charset supported.
