I believe that copyright transfers are wrong path. Neither other contributions to Debian project require copyright assignments and also there does not seem to be consensus that copyright could be even transferred without paper as in dead trees involved. Also, discussions during many years in #388141 seems to indicate that not even all Debian developers would be willing to assign copyright. IMHO, your strategy works just fine if the request is instead only for a license change. It can be a generic statement from authors such as any future license change by Debian project leader decision or just giving list of licenses as options. Anyway this work can be started with by writing this wml::debian::copyright tag, and start filling pages with that information about authors. After there is list of authors, it is also easier to request permissions to either license change or copyright assignment. AFAIK, currently there isn't full list of all authors to website. I think nobody has commented this issue with current CSS rules. So
should I assume that there is no problems with this change, and apply it?

CSS compatibility in this respect. So is there a problem with some
browsers, or does anyone remember any background for this?

No, it's not rude, but if you can take checkout (cvs commands are directly on that page, full checkout takes about 350 MB of disk space), you will get .wml files (which are almost like HTML files but without extra cruft from templates). Translations can be committed only as .wml files because that is the way how Debian's website works. I don't know if you know any Arabic, but I guess that CSS stuff can be
mostly copied from Arabic if it is only left-to-right versus
right-to-left issue.
Please note that some template stuff is translated with gettext (".po"
files). It seems that this gettext usage is one thing that is not
documented on the website, but if you have translated any software, it
should be very easy to do this.

Switching from CVS to Subversion keeps work flow same, commands same etc. but to use Git I need to understand much more and learn quite many new commands. If someone needs distributed "advanced" version control system, then Bazaar is way to go, because of the user interface is enough similar to CVS and Subversion. It seems that the bug applies to Dutch and Finnish. The common factor seems to be that conf/apache.conf(.sed.in) contains AddCharset ISO-8859-1 for those languages. I think that also many other translators need very detailed instructions on how to really make commits there, as git seems to require a bit different commands etc. (I've used earlier CVS, Subversion, and bzr, but still this git seems to follow somewhat different logic especially w.r.t. branches.) Thus can you give a quite detailed instructions on for example updating po files in the git repository? Then for example Finnish license page would contain list of authors in English and a list of Finnish translators (separately?). UTF-8 versus ISO-8859 in English pages
Hello, I just noticed that vote/2006/vote_004.wml and vote/2006/suppl_002_debate.wml both containt UTF-8 characters (according to file(1) at least). There was just a moment ago same problem with vote_003.wml. So maybe we should consider for using UTF-8 in English pages instead of ISO-8859-1, which is now used? Simple find webwml/english -name \*.wml | xargs file | grep ISO-8859 | wc -l tells that 392 files contain ISO-8859 characters, two files (just mentioned) containt UTF-8 and a big majority are pure ASCII files. Bug#238245: Debian website's copyright and license suggestions?
Hello members of debian-legal, It isn't currently well known that Debian website's license is Open Publication License, which has been judged to be non-free, and therefore needs to be changed. Currently web pages are "Copyright © 1997-2005 SPI" and license terms linking to Open Publication license are available at http://www.de.debian.org/license >. However SPI has not been collecting any paper work to transfer copyrights like FSF does, and probably many contributors do not even know about that their work is automatically copyrighted by SPI. So basically there is two questions: Does missing paperwork create a problem? And what would be good license for Debians web pages? (This is about content, the scripts used in generation are GNU GPL or otherwise freely licensed.) Because copyright is currently claimed by SPI Inc, and SPI's board meeting is coming rather soon, I brought this issue to SPI's secretarys attention, but SPI board would appreciate some suggestion what they should decide about license change. I've Cc'ed the bug report about the issue, but Mail-followups does not contain bug report. Add it if needed, please. -- Tommi Vainikainen

Formatting of Social Contract
Hi, currently DFSG in the Social Contract uses underscores for formatting. IMHO that's not good, so here is a patch I suggest: Integrity of The Author's Source Code The license may restrict source-code from being distributed - in modified form _only_ if the license allows + in modified form only if the license allows the distribution of "patch files" with the source code for the purpose of modifying the program at build time. The license must explicitly permit distribution of U is deprecated in HTML 4.01, and of course it'd be possible to use CSS underlining also. Committed files with wrong charset
I accidentally committed two files, finnish/ports/index.wml and finnish/ports/freebsd/index.wml, with charset problems. Latter one was UTF-8 encoded, but should be ISO-8859-15. First one had some strange Emacs chars. My problem is that ...ports/freebsd$ cvs diff index.wml ...ports/freebsd$ recode utf8..latin9 index.wml ...ports/freebsd$ cvs diff index.wml So, cvs doesn't detect any changes after recoding file to correct charset. Therefore I cannnot commit correct version. What should I do? Remove file and add again? -- Tommi Vainikainen
Problem with content negotiation at www.de.debian.org
Hi, I couldn't remember where to find contact person for particular mirror, but www.de.debian.org has problems with content negotiation. I've set content negotiation to accept primary finnish and secondary english. This works for other web sites (such as www.debian.org), but at "de" mirror content negotiation doesn't work with directories, only with files. For example getting http://www.de.debian.org/ gives me english page, but getting http://www.de.debian.org/index gives me correctly finnish page. -- Tommi Vainikainen

Hi, while syncing finnish translations I noticed that http-ftp/index.wml no more links to DVD images. If this was unintentional I suggest someone adds those links to DVD images, but until that I removed all references to DVD images in english page. -- Tommi Vainikainen

Checking out packages modules from webwml cvs
Hi, I tried to check out packages module from webwml cvs (with pserver-account that works for webwml module and I use for committing translations). Here is a problem that hit me: $ cvs co packages cvs server: failed to create lock directory for `/cvs/webwml/packages' (/cvs/webwml/packages/#cvs.lock): Permission denied cvs server: failed to obtain dir lock in repository `/cvs/webwml/packages' cvs [server aborted]: read lock failed - giving up I thought about checking how hard it would be to i18n packages.d.o as currently page template is not l10n-able, only descriptions come from DDTP. mirrors in Denmark (www.dk.d.o), Russia (www.ru.d.o) and Brazil
(www.br.d.o) are not updated after compromise.
Also from other mirrors, China (cn), Indonesia (id), Hong Kong (hk)
and South Africa (za) seems to have problems with content-negotiation.
Content negotiation should show me finnish as it does in other
mirrors, but these mirrors returned me english pages instead.
French mirror was temporarily down. (Webserver returned short notice
about temporary problem.) Italian mirror didn't work at all when I
tried. So I couldn't check ("real") status of these two mirrors.

Pre-installed tag in the front page
Some time ago the tag "Pre-installed" was added to Debian's front page. It seems that no-one else than finnish team has translated this tag. But even when translated, I don't see translation on the front page. The tag is in english and I don't like that. :-) I've committed minor change to mainpage.wml to add trailing slash to tag but it doesn't seem to fix the problem. Any ideas? Does the fact that "pre-installed" is only tag with hyphen has anything to do with the problem? In my home computer I've tried to build that page myself and it works fine, but I'm using wml from unstable... -- Tommi Vainikainen
Capitalizing language names in international/l10n/*/index
Currently international/l10n pages seems to assume all language names
are written capitalized, but this is not right in Finnish, for
example. Is it ok to apply following patch, or does it break
something else? At least English pages seems to be correct even after

I think we should add those new appointed security secretaries to
intro/organization page. But that wasn't trivial if we want to
mention who are secretaries and who are other members. Here is my
suggestion, this is ugly, but so is the whole page. Using HTML markup
better/properly (list tags everywhere etc.) would be nice but I'm not
gonna do that right now.

English files out of date but not really
When http://www.de.debian.org/devel/website/stats/en.html> you look at page listing status of english "translation", you'll notice that some english files are out of date, most(4/6) of them are just really translations of stuff under /international so it doesn't matter. But what's wrong is those two files, News/weekly/2001/21/index and ports/powerpc/index. Those files have korean version too, but korean version doesn't have translation-check header, so I think this might be the bug. Maybe that script calculating percentages should assume "translators are stupid" and not let them(or us) mess things? It just so simple that you cannot assume people can read manuals and follow those. But as a quick fix, I'm going to add those headers files specified and also remove german/News/1998/19981124, because original for that file no longer exists. -- Tommi Vainikainen

I ("finnish") changed this. This is just normal template files,
webwml/english/template/debian/translation-check.wml.

Documentations to how to do this is at http://www.debian.org/devel/website/translating> in chapter "Starting a new translation", try those and do some test builds. After it seems good, you can commit it or send diff here. But in short: you can't properly test your translation stuff unless you translate also some .wml-files and do test builds with those. Also I noticed in your diff that you had modified some other translations too. It is of course good to help other teams when you can, but one commit should include only one logical change if possible. So it is better to commit those separated from catalan stuff. Also my comments from your diffs, I don't believe those can break anything, but of course it is better to watch out. And one thing about slices, please put catalan in alphabetical (english is exception) place when others are in alphabetical order too. In some of tags slices are not in alphabetical order, but mostly should be, and in the future propably all of them should be. -- Tommi Vainikainen

I don't know how those are built, so I don't know if this is matter of debian-boot-list or this. Anyway if you go to http://www.debian.org/releases/2.1/i386/release-notes/> with prefering (content negotiation) finnish over english, you will get page saying "Translation not yet available". Can some one remove those kind of "translations", so that server will send me english ones or is there something evil happening so it won't be easy? -- Tommi Vainikainen
