This was about gettext domains. I decided to use gettext (and thus .po files) for parts of the layout, because these parts of the page aren't changing. For example, on every page is an introductory note explaining what the following list of programs is about. This text is the same on every subpage, so instead of translating it again and again, I figured that it would be easier to use a gettext template for that. I already included support for Debian-Jr and Debian-Lex, because those projects are using very similar lists of programs to be included. I didn't contact their maintainers yet, because I want to further test the new template on Debian-Med. Once I'm satisfied with its function (and the "API" is not changing anymore ;-)), I'll send a mail to the Debian-Lex and Debian-Jr projects. Other Custom Debian Distributions can easily be added, by the way. I have no ideas about this domain stuff but the debian-custom approach seems to be very reasonable because I guess there are many common issues according to the layout and structure of all Custom Debian Distributions. If you could provide a link about this domain stuff I would have a look into it and add this to the general Custom Debian Distribution documentation soon to get interested people informed. IIRC translators can choose any encoding they like, file content is recoded when pages are generated. But as conversion is performed on all web pages, choosing the same charset as the one in .wmlrc should consume less CPU usage. Denis

The best option would be to have a debian-l10n list dedicated to such announces. The creation of this list comes to the surface from time to time, but it never happened, many people believe that debian-i18n could do the trick. This is wrong, i18n and l10n are of course distinct, but many translators follow -i18n because -l10n does not exist, so the need for this list does not seem as evident as it could be. IMO you can crosspost to those lists, and request that replies only go to the relevant -l10n-* list. Denis

With this tag, I consider the list of software which might be included in the Debian-Med project to be considerably easier to maintain and translate. However, I'm not sure how to do this properly, so I'm asking for comments to avoid screwing up... I would put a file named "debian-med.wml" in webwml/english/template/debian, to include the tag definition via "#use wml::debian::debian-med" in the wml files. I'm using the tag to mark repetitive strings, so translations are easier. However, I don't know which gettext domain I should use. My guess is that "templates" would be appropriate. After this, I would add "debian-med.wml" to templates_FILES in the Makefile in english/po, run "make pot", and commit "templates.pot". This is what I concluded from looking at other files in the CVS, READMEs and the list archive. I could not find a comprehensive guide to this procedure, but if such a document exists, I'd be pleased to know about it. Is this the correct approach, or did I miss something? And last, not least: after the update with "make pot", how do these changes propagate to the different translations? Can I make the translation teams aware of those new gettext strings?
