Since 2015 we only use "security update" as a common category for
almost all advisories. Here are some numbers
- 1700 x security update, 6 other categories for the DSAs
- 2504 x LTS security update and 12 others for the DLAs

In the end we would have a localized date, but the interesting
information of the advisory itself would still be in english.
It's not worth spending time into this effort and it would make
many things much more complicated.

I also think that automatic translation software nowadays can
translate the date including the name of month easily and even
translating the advisory shouldn't be hard.

changes.
  You will see the change history (including a rename from dsa.wml to new.wml)

  For lts/security/new.wml use
$ git log -p --follow a1010f1cb6fd~1.. index.wml

Our workflow for LTS still includes manual generation of .wml and .data
files, as you note. As this is a step in the process which presents an
opportunity make mistakes, I am pleased that this is being automated.

At what point should the LTS team stop generating these? Is that
something that we should discontinue right away, or do wait for a formal
announcement to let us know that these should no longer be generated
when a DLA is released?

The only advantage I see, is that you see that there's an old
translation, for those were we will catch up with the renaming. In the
end the translators always have to use git. Having an .outdated file they need 
to use
$ git mv xxx.outdated 

I we delete the file they could use a simple 2-line shell script we
provide for them:

hash=$(git log -- $1|head -1|awk '{print $2 "~1" }')
git checkout $hash -- $1

Let's call it undo-delete

We still have the problem, that we might have to rename ALL deleted
files. Otherwise the translators could never rely on seeing a
.outdated file. What if there's no .outdated? Then they have to parse through 
the git
log and check if there's nevertheless an old deleted translation.

One more point: Does thi work for a complete deleted subdirectory, as I did
some time ago with tamil, albanian,...

I'm not against your solution and I think we should give it a try and
then after a year see if this helps to get more recent
translations. Then we can made a new decision if we want continue this workflow.

Hi all,

in the past, all security related lists (like the N recent security
advisories, crossreferences, RSS feeds, OVAL) were using the .wml and
.data files which exists for each DSA and DLA. These two files are
still created manually for each DSA and DLA.

After talking to the security team, my goal is to remove the need of
this manuall work and generate all information automatically from the
primary security sources from the Debian Security Tracker. This also
makes the security information more early available to our users
without waiting for someone to prepare the .wml and .data files.


The changes will affect the webwml repository under /security/ and
/lts/security/.


What's already done

- The new lists of DSA/DLA are currently available under
  https://www.debian.org/security/new.html#DSAS
  https://www.debian.org/lts/security/new.html#DLAS

  The two new.html pages will replace the current index.html pages
  https://www.debian.org/security/index.html  and
  https://www.debian.org/lts/security/index.html

- The new list of recent security announcements now includes a
  link to the security tracker and the original announcement
  mails. The later link is a complete new feature of the web pages.

- The RSS security feeds for DSA and DLA are not generated from the
  .wml/.data files any more but using our new script mk-dsa-dla-list.
  The RSS content now includes a link to the security tracker and to the
  announcement mail.
  Since the change on Nov 16th we did not get any complaint about this.

- The OVAL files are generated without using the .data and .wml files.
  We now parse DebianSecTracker.json and /data/DSA/list from the sec-tracker
  Thanks to Carsten for implementing this. The OVAL XML files have now
  less errors but still aren ot perfect, because they never included
  information from DLA for older releases.

- A new collection of sources of security information
  https://www.debian.org/security/new.html#infos
  including examples how to access DSA, DLA and CVE information.


TODO:

- security/new.wml and lts/security/new.wml will replace the corresponding 
index.wml
- we need more translations for these two new wml files (hints for
  translators see below)
- The crossreferences will be removed an can easily replaced by using
  data/DSA/list which is easy to parse and read.

- Create new apache redirects. Currently we have
  www.d.org/security/dsa- (only lowercase)
  to www.d.o/security//dsa-
- Currently there's no similar redirect for the DLA
- NEW redirects
  redirect www.d.org/security/dsa- to the announcement mail at
  lists.debian.org/debian-security-announce//
  A script for generating the map file already exists.
  We will do this also for the DLA.

- all security//, key-rollover/ and undated/ files will be removed
- We will keep 2020-GRUB-UEFI-SecureBoot/ and 2021-GRUB-UEFI-SecureBoot/
- No more translations of security advisories are needed
  In 2023 only we had only french translations of the DSA/DLA. No
  other language did any translation of these information in 2023.
  French indeed translated ALL DSA/DLA. Wow!
  Thanks a lot to the french translators for this great work.
- We will keep the sec announcements and translations of 2023 for
  another 6 month before deleting them.
  Older translations will be removed in a few weeks after all changes
  were made.

- The translators are asked to prepare security/new.wml
  and lts/security/new.wml for their language. We will remove the old
  index.wml for languages which do not provide translations for the
  new pages.

A side effect of the removal of the thousands of DSA/DLA will be that
our search engine will present better results. For e.g. if you search
for "security AND tracker" most results (of the 2000) are links to DSA
and DLA, but no information about our security tracker.
another e.g. for bad search result: "firefox" the first 10 hits you get are DSA 
from 2005 to 2007
another e.g.: search for "gnome" will list a lot of old DSA for icewaesel, 
icedove and other packages

I have a tested and working proposal ready now (here for 
../releases/bookworm/index).

It contains six sets of different content, which makes it possible, to
dynamically enable the needed content for the respective situations over
the whole release cycle.

That all is controlled via these six variables:

change the index file, when the time for those change comes, just change
the tag.

Some more information about access to the translations of the webside 
statistics.

I've checked the apache logs for /devel/website/stats
and did some statistics. All statistics are for a two weeks interval.
This is the list of the pages under /devel/website/stats with the most
hits in the apache logs (two weeks before oct, 29th). I've removed
all lines which indicates that a bot, crawler or spider accessed them. 
Therefore I used this command

I think that this clearly shows, that most translations of these pages
are not needed. Let's just keep the native language version an the
english versions.

Bug#1053508: sitemap.wml also lists external web pages, review all content

The sitemap also includes external links like qa.debian.org,
lists.d.o, even wiki.d.o But a sitemap should only list internal pages.

Also the selection seems to be very random. Why should archives of
mailing lists listed here? Is devel/developers.loc that important to
be listed on a sitemap?

Why are these listed?
- Procedures for submitting a General Resolution proposal or amendment
- Standard Resolution Procedure
It's sufficient to list a link to our vote page

I think that the machine was low in resources at some time, and if we got a 
better machine in the meanwhile nobody looked at improving the cron jobs 
(correct me if I am wrong).

There are the lessoften job that may be concurrent at some time if the webwml 
job is long (e.g. after a point release or changes in templates or in .po 
files) but I guess we can try to accommodate everything).

Please go ahead and let see how it goes? (Or we can ask DSA if they have any 
objection)

Why are these web pages translated?

Hi,

I wonder why a page like
https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po/de is translated to other
languages than german.  IMO an english and german version would be
sufficient. I'm sure the translations are generated by a script and it
would make sense to stop the generation of these pages if the target
language does not match the language for which the statistics is
shown.
Does anyone see any use for a combination like german po file statistics
in dansk, Nederlands, svenska, suomi,... ?

BTW, currently we have more than 9000 html files in this directory on
our web servers.

Feedback on new web pages

Dear Debian team,

I would like to provide my personal feedback on/feeling about the new web
pages.
Let me state that I am a rather traditionalist and I browse almost exclusively
using desktop PC.

FEEDBACK/OPINION:
I understand that these pages may be easier to browse while using mobile
phone/tablet.

Unfortunately, most of the information is now hidden and requires searching
it, more mouse-clicks/loading more pages.
>From this point of view, they are significantly less effective.

The "streamlined" design is 

I know one cannot stop the changes, but I would strongly like to encourage you
to keep the old design alive in parallel so that it is easy to switch to the -
IMHO - much more usable old design when one wishes to do so.

I have read some comments on a not-only-Linux news web-pages (in Czech)
https://www.abclinuxu.cz/zpravicky/debian-v-listopadu-spusti-nove-webove-stranky
and the users have expressed similar concerns/opinions, e.g.

https://www.abclinuxu.cz/zpravicky/debian-v-listopadu-spusti-nove-webove-stranky#27
translates to:
"Hm, this is exactly the type of web-pages that I always leave because they are
not well-arranged and they give a little sense at first sight."

I agree with that comment as I often turn to www-search in order to find the
information I need when I encounter similar web-pages.
This typically happens if I need to find some information related to
Ubuntu.

SUGGESTIONS:
1) The exclamation marks are not necessary, they are distracting and forced.
2) I would prefer that the top-left "menu" contains more items than the current
4:
Debian, Blog, Micronews, Planet
  I would love to see most of the original structure reproduced OR add a switch
to more detailed arrangement closer the original layout.

Please translate or update translations: web pages related to the Debian 10 (buster) release

Dear translators

We're about to publish Debian 10 (buster) as stable release, and that
involves some small changes in some web pages related to buster and
other releases.

Please have a look at these pages in your language folder of the webwml
repo, and sync with the English ones, if needed:

english/News/2019/20190706.wml (this is the press release)
english/releases/stretch/index.wml
english/releases/jessie/index.wml
english/releases/buster/index.wml
english/releases/index.wml
english/releases/stretch/debian-installer/index.wml
english/releases/buster/debian-installer/index.wml

This way we will avoid the translated pages to be marked as obsoleted
(showing the yellow warning to visit the original page in English).

The changes in the English folder (nor translations) are not published
yet but you can build locally to see the pages (with make) or have a
look at https://www-staging.debian.org/

I will try to update www-master as we get the commits in the website, so
when we finally push to mirrors the website (when the buster image tests
are ready), we show as much as updated translations as possible.

But "even" for translators a column name should serve the purpose and
not the technical details.

But I believe we are bike shedding. If this is very important for you

Translators  and maybe package maintainers.
So why not have a technical-focused page?

While technically correct users of the website might not know (or be
interested in) that a mail is behind it. Also the intent not the
technical means should be listed. The intent is to either act as
maintainer (coordinating the update, TAF, MAJ) or as editor (i.e. ITT,
RFR, LCFC, BTS, HOLD).

As the first is the last translator of the published version I would
keep it. The second one could be editor or maybe "maintainer", as this
person took care last of this particular transltion, i.e.

1st Translator -> Translator
2nd Translator -> Editor / Maintainer

(Last Message is not correct, as the replies to pseudo headers are not
tracked on purpose here).

It has been reported (in #debian-www) that in some web pages under
https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/ there are tables about the
status of translations, having 2 columns named "Translator".

For example, in:
https://www.debian.org/international/l10n/po/es.en

right after "Section: main" we have these headers:

Package Score File Translator Status Translator Date Bug

The first "Translator" columns lists the name in the field
"Last-Translator" of the corresponding .po file. The second "Translator"
column lists the name of the sender of the last message to the mailing
list, about the corresponding .po file.

For the translation of the website files, we have these headers:

File Diff Log Translation Maintainer Status Translator Date

The "Maintainer" column lists the name in the field "maintainer" of the
corresponding .wml file, so here there is no confusion.

How should we name the former 2 "Translator" columns?

My proposal would be these headers

1st Translator -> Translator
2ns Translator -> Last Message

But I don't like them very much. Any other suggestions?

Contributor writes translations and sends them to the l10n list.

Coordinator watches the i18n/l10n lists, ensures the team is working
smoothly, commits contributed translations and helps new people
to get involved in translation efforts.

You can do both roles at the same time.

Hi,

I started to create some (partially autogenerated) web pages for the 
upcoming Debian Astro Pure Blend, which I would like to get some review:

There are already two issues: First, I use some manually-written 
javascript code to show/hide details of the included software packages. 
There are other similar uses for this, f.e. in the tracker. Is there a 
way to have this in some common (documented) repository?


Second, I wonder about the smaller table font: in my opinion this looks 
ugly for most cases. The default font is usually the one for the best 
readability, and a smaller one is harder to read. You may compare here 
f.e. the Blends main web page https://www.debian.org/blends/ (has some 
tables with a small font) with the Debian Astro task list 
http://blends.debian.org/astro/tasks/ (which has one table of similar 
length, with normal font). I mentioned this already a month ago, but 
without response.

Not sure if Fedora Spins are really the _same_ as Debian Pure Blends.  
At least the SoaS spin is, I believe, a fork of Fedora.

Fedora Labs are quite likely not equivalent of Debian Pure Blends.

Agreed. I think the existing paragraphs in the "Learn More" section
are the best user-targeted introduction to the concept of Debian pure
blends and the existing introduction should be replaced by that.

A few comments:

I believe Debian Edu should be in the "in the works" sections: As I 
understand it, the parts officially in Debian are only the metapackages, 
whereas its ease of installation and configuration is not (see e.g. 
).  Also, that project has two 
equally valid names, so I suggest to also mention the other: Skolelinux.

Related to above, I believe the phrase "Those with installation media 
available [...]" would be improved by adding the term "official" - as in 
"Those with official installation media available [...]".

I believe FreedomBox is also a Debian Pure Blend in the works a.k.a. a 
Blend (see e.g. ).

EzGo is badly described: Metapackages describe its aim as being for 
"teaching and self-learning."

users do not care about how Blends were called in the past, and how bad that
name was; they want to know why Blends are good :)

Here is a suggestion:


Debian Pure Blends

Debian Pure Blends are a solution for special groups of users with different
skills and interests. Not only do they provide handy collections (metapackages)
of specific program packages, but they also ease installation and configuration
for the intended purpose.

Debian Pure Blends are not forks from Debian. As the name underlines, they are
pure Debian and just provide a specific flavour. So if you obtain the complete
Debian GNU/Linux distribution, you have all available Debian Pure Blends
available for installation.

Debian Pure Blends are also just called Blends when used clearly in the Debian
internal context which makes "Pure" and "Debian" obvious, like on this page.
They were formerly known as Custom Debian Distributions - this name was changed
because it was confusing too much users on  be something else
than Debian.


I also find the "Learn More" section redundant with the introduction above;
probably they can be blended ;) Maybe "Learn More" would be a good place to
explain more in details how to install the Blends (in the end, was support
enabled in Jessie's Debian Installer ?), what are "tasks" or "metapackages",
how to find them, how metapackages work in Debian (what happens or not when
removed), and whether it is possible to install two blends at the same time.

Lastly, small detail: how about adding "(Medical and Life sciences)" after
"Debian Med" in the list of released blends ?

PS: if somebody has an idea for a cool diagram that would explain it all in a
simple picture, that would dramatically increase the visual impact of the page

Thanks Iain, good work!

I would suggest a message to translators (debian-i...@lists.debian.org)
about index.wml page being worked on, and thus, discouraging
translations of that page until it is "stabilized", but I don't know if
keeping the index.wml page only in English is not good for the already
done translations of hamradio subfolder (I suppose not, but not totally
sure).

I've been doing some things and some stuff.

There's now a page at https://www.debian.org/blends/ which has the index of
the blends. A lot of the links for the blends don't really go anywhere
useful currently, I need to find better links, so this isn't ready for being
linked from the front page yet.

I've moved /devel/hamradio to /blends/hamradio and there is an Apache
RewriteRule in place to redirect from the old location to the new location.
For new URLs, they should point to the /blends/hamradio location. (Thanks
pabs!)

I've also moved the French and Russian translations. I think I've done this
in a way that hasn't made trouble for anyone but some feedback from the
translators would be useful. The workflow was basically:

 * cp -a old/ new/
 * Remove all the CVS directories
 * Set all the translation things to 1.1 (the latest revision in the english
   folder)
 * Update the references to devel/ to blends/
 * Commit the blends/blendname
 * cvs rm -Rf the devel/blendname

If you're a blend and you don't like the description I made up for you or
you would like to suggest a better link for now (I'd like all the blends, at
least all the released blends, to have user facing landing pages on
www.d.o), then please contact me with follow up on the debian-blends@l.d.o.

Stats of hits of translated web pages

Hi all
If I go to
http://www.debian.org/devel/website/stats/es
(or any language subfolder), I can hover over the page name to see the
number of hits of each webpage.
For example:

CD/index >>  13140 hits

I believe that those numbers correspond to the global hits
(http://www.debian.org/CD/index English version + all the translations
of that page), or maybe hits only for English version of that page.

Is it possible (for a non-DD) to gather information about the hitcount
of a certain translated version? (in my example, I would like to know
hits of http://www.debian.org/CD/index.es.html ).

I could not find anything about it in
http://dde.debian.net/dde/q/static/porridge/stats
nor in
https://wiki.debian.org/Statistics

I would go for (if possible):

- HTML version + gzipped TXT in CDs
- all versions (PDF, TXT and HTML) in DVDs

I know you are not a fan of putting all in a separate 'documentation CD' but
doing that has several advantages:

- we could update the documentation throughout the release without having to
  rebuild the CDs/DVDs
- documentation size (both of formats and number of translations) would not 
  affect the initial install
- we could add additional documentation, e.g. updated versions of the
  Debian's Reference, New Maintainer's Guide or Securing Manual and their
  translations.

On the last point, it might be interesting to note that much of the
documentation is updated *post* release and the people using the available
packages in the CDs or DVDs are left with out of date documentation most of
the time.

How much size is the documentation occupying nowadays anyway?

Sorry, I did this change just to update the website so the FAQ was current
with the release. These can easily be moved back into the branch.

If you can take care of this, please do so, if not I will try to do so in due
time. 

One thing that worries me is that all the PO files are fuzzy so as soon as we
do the switch all the translations will need to be fully reviewed. There's a
good side and a bad side to this..

OK, that'd be cute. Although I'm also worred about the potential
breakage on the CDs if the release notes get any bigger. We had a
last-minute nightmare trying to make things fit on release day on the
KDE CDs, and I don't want to have to repeat the experience. :-/

In future, it would be nice to maybe re-think what we put on which
CDs. Some people have suggested having a separate CD for docs, which
I'll admit I'm not such a fan of for a variety of reasons. I'm tempted
to suggest that we might only put the HTML versions of the
installation guide and release notes on the CDs (omitting the PDFs),
but put all the versions on DVD. Or something; what do you think? This
might be a useful route for the squeeze point releases.

On a wider note: we're also rapidly getting to the point where a
single CD is just *not* big enough to contain all the bits for a
sensible Gnome/KDE desktop. I don't think we can usefully continue
with single-CD installs for them. :-/ Maybe that's the answer,
instead.

Could we delay these changes a little bit? Almost everybody is finishing up
squeeze-related stuff (such as the Release Notes). I myself would prefer this
to be brought up in a few weeks rather than now.

It is not secret that Debian documentation pages can be reorganized to
make more important things to be more accessible.  I would like to
update their content, now.

Key actions(first phase):

clutter any more but add direct access to other important pages
directly.

For "Manuals specific to Debian",  items under it:

Heya, it would be great to have a RSS and/or Atom feed for the news section of
the Debian homepage (and possibly a different one for the advisories listed
there too). I know it's stuff one can already follow via mailing list(s), but a
lot of people these days uses feeds directly, I think we can offer a service to
more users offering both.

Now, I've written before helpers that generate RSS, and I'm willing to
contribute one for this specific case. Nevertheless the README files under
News/ are a bit scary in stating that only press/webmasters should fiddle with
them, so I'm looking for advice. Where can a script that generates RSS/Atom
(and commits it?) can be hooked at in the process of maintaining the HTML
listing of news on the website homepage?

An alternative less invasive solution would be to have a separate script
elsewhere checking out periodically from CVS the News/ directory, generate the
RSS feed, and have it referenced from the homepage. That would work, wouldn't
be that much at stake with feed technology (which does pull anyhow), but
somehow doesn't feel "right".

Any hint?

Great, so to reply to Alexander's question “Would that work for the DPN,
too?”: it does! I just adapted Stefano's patch to the DPN and pushed it
in the main index page, the News one and the News/weekly one, thus
closing #583687 too.

That's me posting as record what it takes.

I found character code change in source is the easy part.

There are programs specifically to address current Chinese encoding in
English source too.  Please check them and adjust them to new set up.

I may miss the point, but if such tools are required for *moving to
utf-8*, then use them on your client side, then commit all the utf8
files to the CVS repo.

In the case these tools are actually required to build pages *from UTF8*
wml files, then it may be requested to Debian sysadmins.

big5/gb2312 is NOT good for Chinese pages when pages mixed other languages.


There is a idea to migrate and translate pages to utf-8,
by using "enca" and "cconv".


Enca is a charset analyser to help to detect charset of existed wml files,
and cconv is a simplified-traditional chinese conversion tool,
it's can help to create pages in CN/TW/HK-UTF8.


The method should need to install these tools on the web server,
so I need some helps and discussions.  :)

Statistics for outdated web pages is not being updated

Hi!

After the move of people.debian.org off of gluck, the pages at 
http://people.debian.org/~peterk/outdated/ are no longer getting updated as 
they require direct (password-less) access to the CVS repository, and this 
does not work when they are on different hosts.


The automatic purge of pages should still work as long as the cronjobs on 
gluck keep running.



I have copied everything over from gluck, and am ready to start up 
everything as soon as the webwml CVS is moved over, or a different solution 
is found.

Committed. Please note that I changed the transliteration from Persian
to Farsi since it should be translated (compare other languages).

PS: I found this mail in my SPAM folder. That's why I was a little bit
confused and assumed it's Arash's patch which I missed in his private

No, it's still wrong. Please adapt the revision number in the line
#use wml::debian::translation-check translation="1.0" maintainer="[EMAIL 
PROTECTED]"
to something as "1.20" instead of "1.0". See

for available revisions.

Thanks for your attention,
As Behrad said, Farsi is not an international word, we ourselves say
Farsi too our language, but its ISO name is Persian. And as you got the
point, the farsi directory is almost empty and just have some buggy and
not acceptable translations.

And about the RTL direction, I forgot to ask Mohammed Adnène
Trojette to put their Arabic RTL CSS files for our directory too. Jens,
can you do this?

BTW, we'll take a look at the social_contract to see what the problem
is, and will resend it to you.

Oops, please ignore this. I just noticed that farsi/ is nearly empty so
it's indeed no problem to delete it.

I built your files and they look good (it's a little bit strange to see
the "right to left" text and the templates are probably not optimized
for it (dates look strange)).

already discussions about switching to another version control system
I suggest to keep it currently as it is.

That's because dosemu maintainer doesn't put it in Description but no
debian-www error. That's basicly a problem (if it's a problem) in policy
of descriptions.

The current maintainer of the Debian package "dosemu" has added the
homepage in the package description.  That change has not yet been
released in "stable".
