Re: Bug#250998: rxvt-unicode: should call -ls in the menu entry

2004-05-27 Thread Eduard Bloch

#include hallo.h
* Martin-Ãric Racine [Wed, May 26 2004, 11:52:10AM]:

It would be desirable for the menu entry to call -ls (login shell) to
ensure that all user-defined shell preferences will be loaded upon
 launching rxvt.

The same applies to the non-XFT entry.

Interesting. I am not convinced that we should do so (because many
people put stuff into ~/.bash_profile and expect it not to be executed
often, or executed only for console shells).

How do other maintainers handle this? aterm, rxvt, xterm do not use it,
and I would like to know whether we have some kind of convention.

Eduard.

Bug#251157: xserver-xfree86: Capslock shifts keyboard layout

2004-05-27 Thread David Wood
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-2
Severity: important

Keyboard layout changes by one column when capslock is active, as
demonstrated below.

normal: qwerty asdfgh zxcvbn
shift: QWERTY ASDFGH ZXCVBN
caps: WERTYU SDFGHJ XCVBNM

I suspect it's an xkblayout issue (a missing bit in the package?).

This happened immediately after an XF86 package update on
debian/unstable.

Thanks for your attention :)

IMPORTANT: workaround for NumLock breakage

2004-05-27 Thread Branden Robinson
Somehow I managed to take a hit off the crack pipe when prepping the XKB
data updates in 4.3.0.dfsg.1-2.

A patch file to fix this is attached.

(Yes, I've tested this fix.)

Here's how to use it.

1) Save the attachment someplace like /tmp.
2) Become root.
3) cd / patch -p0 /tmp/unfuck_numlock.diff

Sorry for the fuckup.

Fellow debian-x subscribers, please:

A) Tell everyone who complains about this bug about this workaround.
B) Mail this workaround to the submitters of what is sure to be a few
dozen mindless duplicate bug reports about this.
C) Downgrade all dupes to severity important, reassign them to
xlibs, and merge them, please. People who think this is an RC bug
are hitting the crack pipe even worse than I did, and worse, they're
   doing it on purpose.

I'll do what I can, but I doubt I will be able to keep with the flood.
There's been one hysterical grave bug filed already.

Thanks a lot, and sorry for the screw up. I'll be fixing this in SVN
momentarily.

dexconf should default to PCI:1:0:0 ?

2004-05-27 Thread Bill Allombert
Hello X Strike Force,

I have just made a sarge install and I found that
dexconf default to PCI:0:1:0.
I expect most box to have a video adapter on the AGP port nowadays, so
PCI:1:0:0 seems a better default.

Also it is unfortunate XFree86 and lspci does not use the same exact
format for PCI ids, (lspci give :01:00.0, but XFree86 want
PCI:1:0:0) so I ended up slighlty confused...

Cheers,

I don't have anything to ask, but something to say: the DRI drivers in
XFree86 4.3 are old and unmaintained. Try a snapshot from dri.sf.net,
chances are this problem has been fixed.

Okay. Do you have any recommendations for what I might put in an
xlibmesa-dri bug script to gather information about the reporter's
 hardware, and/or DRI successes/failures?

The X server log is always useful. Also, assuming xbase-clients is
installed, the output of

ldd /usr/X11R6/bin/glxinfo|grep libGL

and

LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose /usr/X11R6/bin/glxinfo 21

is useful.

I think that's a good idea. To recap, the problem is many-fold:

  * The default timeouts are too low
  * On hitting a timeout, the driver should try stopping the engine
cleanly before resetting it
  * There's ongoing discussion on the dri-devel list that the engine
reset code itself could do a better job as well

Re: Bug#250915: installation-report

2004-05-27 Thread Martin Michlmayr
* Jason Dobbs [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2004-05-25 21:18]:
Unfortunately, I could not get the graphics card working
for the version of XFree86 (4.3.0.dfsg.1-1) currently in sarge. It's a PCI
Diamond Multimedia Stealth 64 Video 2001 Series card with 1MB ram, which
has a S3 Trio 64V+ chipset. I tried S3, VESA VGA drivers, but the best I
could come up with was a 640x480 VESA mode. So I installed Woody and got
 Xfree86 version 3.3.6 running just fine with a 800x600 16bpp mode. However,
Sarge no longer supports Xfree86 3.3.6, and I would really prefer to be
 running
Sarge. So I reinstalled Sarge, and tried to build Xfree86 3.3.6 from source.
This effort failed, for various reasons (compiler related, I suspect).

There are some cards which are no longer supported in 4.x, but I don't
know if the S3 Trio is one of them. I'm CCing the debian-x list for
more comments. Can you please send the XFree86 logs from 3.3.6?

Bug#251263: xlibs: setxkbmap fails, Error loading new keyboard description

2004-05-27 Thread Ville Vainio
Package: xlibs
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-2
Severity: normal

After apt-get upgrade for sarge (including dfsg-1.2 X server stuff),
keyboard layout stopped working for KDE.

Neither the command:

setxkbmap -model pc105 -layout fi -variant basic

or:

setxkbmap -model pc105 -layout us

or:

setxkbmap -model pc101 -layout us

or:

setxkbmap

work. They all output Error loading new keyboard description.

running strace setxkbmap gives:

 lotsa crap

First I installed with Linux 2.4. The only problem with it was that
XFree86 asked me if horizontal and vertical refresh rate are taken from
DDC and I answered yes. But values for these rates were set to some
generic values. I had to view /var/log/XFree.0.log, read the rates from
there and put them in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 manually.

Maybe debian-x can help with this.

Bug#251037: More info on strange xdmcp behavior

2004-05-27 Thread Bartłomiej Ochman

Hello,

I've discovered, what are those IPs, they were on my lo:1...lo:5 set by some
software I use to block access from there. But then, why has it used them
instead of outgoing eth0?

I'd consider it still a bug.

BO

Bug#251020: xfree86 doesn't recognize horizvert rates + cat /proc/bus/usb/devices hangs, and so discover does

2004-05-27 Thread Ognyan Kulev

Martin Michlmayr wrote:

Does cat /proc/bus/usb/devices hang on 2.4 too?

Probably not, because this stage (xfree86 configuration) passed
successfully, and it surely calls discover which seems to always look at
/proc/bus/usb/devices.

  Now that you have a

Debian installation, can you install the 2.6.6 kernel from unstable
and check if that hangs a well?

On the same computer I'm running Debian unstable+experimental with
2.6.6. On it, I manually did mount -t usbdevfs none /proc/bus/usb,
and cat /proc/bus/usb/devices runs fine. There are two devices.

On the installed with debian-installer system (where the problem
occurs), there are 2 devices too, because ls /proc/bus/usb/devices
gives something like: 001 002 devices. It is kernel 2.6.5, so
probably when d-i moves to 2.6.6 this bug will auto-fix.

Tomorrow I'll upgrade kernel-image of my d-i system to see what happens.

ogi

Bug#250919: xserver-xfree86 propably not causing KDE crash

2004-05-27 Thread Jan Lühr
Greetings,

the kde / kdm crash seems not to be caused by xserver-xfree86, because it
happens with ssh -X as well.
A friend of mine, asked for a strace [1] thinks it is a kernel-problem.
However, the missing sysmbols probably do not cause any trouble down here.

Keep smiling
yanosz

Bug#251020: xfree86 doesn't recognize horizvert rates + cat /proc/bus/usb/devices hangs, and so discover does

2004-05-27 Thread Martin Michlmayr
* Ognyan Kulev [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2004-05-26 14:31]:
My second install was with Linux 2.6. All went fine until all packages
are downloaded and debconf tried to configure xfree86 (XFree86 again,
huh?). The installation hangs just after all packages are downloaded
and they are started to be configured. The problem was that discover
hangs. I installed strace manually and run strace discover -- the
process hangs while trying to read from /proc/bus/usb/devices. cat
/proc/bus/usb/devices hangs too. I didn't continue with installation.

Does cat /proc/bus/usb/devices hang on 2.4 too? Now that you have a
Debian installation, can you install the 2.6.6 kernel from unstable
and check if that hangs a well?

Martin please forward directly all these questions and mails directly to
debian-x. In this way the first one of us can take a look to it.

afaik this can be a protocol selection problem. For eg: ImPS/2 - PS2

Bug#29194: Bug #29194: xfree86: have all XFree86 packages symlink to xfree86-common for copyright and changelog(s)

2004-05-27 Thread Elrond

Hi,

I was about to file exactly this bug since some time,
finally I found it already existed.

Note, that the situatuion is now even more interesting.

We have packages like libxv1.

16k /usr/X11R6/lib/libXv.so.1.0
177k/usr/share/doc/libxv1

And none of the three files in doc/libxv1 are unique to
this package.

Those could be moved into say

copyright could just reference it.
Maybe even with the note to update xfree86-common to the
correct version to get the correct list. (or maybe the
Debian.changes.gz should contain this note).

This would at least mitigate the situation.

but as for the changelog, well, that's probably a matter of taste.

I will note that if debhelper were to do this for me, I'd probably
 meekly follow along.

If it helps, I will happily file a wishlist bug against
debhelper.
And notify this bug back, when it's ever
resolved positively.

*g* Not to mention, that the maintainer for debhelper is
the submitter of this bug ;o))

I'll happily post some of my ideas on this.

Tagging wontfix, as I haven't the courage to explore this particular
frontier. If you no longer feel this should be done, please close the
 bug.

Well, if a second opinion counts something:
I'd like this to happen too.

Bug#251307: xserver-xfree86: A problem with the new ATI driver: XVideo apps crash X server (on ATI Range IIc (Mach64) card)

2004-05-27 Thread Modestas Vainius
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-2
Severity: important
Tags: sid

Hello,

First of all, thank you for including the new ATI driver. I have used
the driver from http://gatos.sf.net for a year or so to get Xv support
for my video card. Finally, the xserver-xfree86 is supposed to support
XVideo on my pretty old video card out of the box.

However, there is one problem currently. It seems that any XVideo app
(I have tested mplayer and kaffeine (xine)) brings the X server down.
/var/log/XFree86.0.log.old provides good hints though. I have attached this
file it doesn't get included in the report automatically.
/var/log/XFree86.0.log.old has the log of the X server instance which was
crashed by mplayer. /var/log/XFree86.0.log (automatically included)
is from the currently running X server instance. I think, the cause of
my problem is the unresolved symbol:

Symbol xf86XVCopyYUV12ToPacked from module
/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/atimisc_drv.o is unresolved!

which yields the following error on crash:

This should not happen!
An unresolved function was called!

Bug#251319: [xbase-clients] /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc calls X the wrong way

2004-05-27 Thread Daniel
Package: xbase-clients
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1

/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc calls X like that:
'exec /usr/bin/X11/X -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp'

The '-dpi 100' bit is wrong. It overrides anything you might have
written in the config file, which is very annoying. The config file has a
way to specify the screen size. The config file is the correct place to
put this information. The commandline in some script is _not_.
