Looks like the server does not scan PCI bus 1 or something like that.
Does it help if you set the BusID in the Device section?

Nope, stills claims no devices found. Here is the log.

Hi,

This one year old bug report about tilt buttons being inverted on MX1000
mouse has been closed upstream because it didn't have any activity for a
long time. Could you report back whether the bug is still there with the
latest evdev driver (1:1.1.5-2 is in unstable) so that I either close
this bug or reopen the upstream one?

Thanks,
Brice

Bug#372918: negative refresh rates in xrandr

2007-05-07 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi,

This one year old bug report about negative rates in xrandr on a ATI
board has been closed upstream before getting reopen. Could you please
report back whether the bug is gone, either with the 1:6.6.3-2 driver
currently in Etch/stable and testing or with 1:6.6.191-1 currently in
experimental? I seem to remember somebody else got a similar problem
solved with 6.6.191.

Thanks,
Brice

I have had several X crashes, possibly because I am using X 4.0 with a 2.2
kernel. As such it may not warrant your attention.

Most recent crash: I had just started X and was adding an appointment
to Gnome Calendar. I had specified an ending date for this weekly
recurring appointment. I then clicked on the drop arrow for the
Except dates, and X crashed.

I was running WindowMaker (no desktop environment), Xemacs, Netscape,
3 wterms, and a python program. This is my normal work environment.
I had been in X less than 5 minutes.

If I can reproduce the error, I shall let you know.

Although I'm sending this via reportbug on my desktop machine, you must

Bug#362997: dual head on PCI G450 fails

2007-05-07 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi,

About a year ago, you reported a bug to the Debian BTS regarding
dual-head failing on a MGA G450 board. Did you reproduce this problem
recently? With Xorg/Etch? with the latest driver in unstable? If not, I
will close this bug in the next weeks.

Thanks,
Brice

Hi!

I've using XFree86 4.x.y for a long time with my G400. No major problem.
But about some weeks ago (I'm doing dist-upgrade about two times a week
from 'sid') it started to crash regulary triggered by two actions (I guess):

* switching VT from console to X
* switching VT from X to console

After a second X crashed with sig11 in XFree86.0.log

This GLcore crash is actually a mesa problem in the server core
(reassigning) and the same than bug #327699 (reassigning and merging).
Both should be fixed now since upstream fixed this bug a while ago
(https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4087). Closing.

Since upgrading to the new mga-package the resolution I used at 85Hz only runs

It looks like the exact same problem described in this Ubuntu-bug-report

Even the workaround works.

Bug#422602: xserver-xorg: dualhead with ati broken

2007-05-07 Thread Brice Goglin
reassign 422602 xserver-xorg-video-ati
thank you

 Package: xserver-xorg
 Version: 1:7.2-3
 Severity: important

After one of the last upgrades of Xorg I get the following errors in
 /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

(EE) RADEON(0): No valid mode found for this DFP/LCD
(EE) RADEON(0): No valid mode found for CRTC2, disabling MergedFB

A few days ago dualhead worked with the same configuration.

I guess you updated xserver-xorg-core to 1.3 in the meantime? Some
things have to be fixed in the ATI driver before working well in
xinerama with the new server.

 X Window System Version 1.3.0
 Release Date: 19 April 2007
 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 1.3
 Build Operating System: Linux Debian

This is xserver-xorg-core 1.3 as said above.

 (II) LoadModule: ati
 (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//ati_drv.so
 (II) Module ati: vendor=X.Org Foundation
   compiled for 7.1.1, module version = 6.6.3

You could possibly try with xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.6.191-1 currently
in unstable.

Rebooted my home computer today and it came back with the new X.org 7.1.
Unfortunately the screen in X is just black. Monitor seems OK since text
mode works but as soon as X starts, the screen goes black and moinotr turns
its high voltage off by the sound of it. Killing X restores the textmode.

I have not yet verified that it works with older x.org since it needs to
remove and downgrade the whole x.org and this takes some time to understanda
and do.

Bug#399509: xserver-xorg-video-mga: hangs after switch to console and back

2007-05-07 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi,

I guess this hang while switching between X and a matroxfb console
hasn't been fixed yet, right? Even with mga driver 1.4.6 (currently in
unstable)?

I am not very surprised to see some conflicts between matroxfb and the X
server, some other drivers had similar problems in the past. There are
some known problem upstream [1] [2] about matroxfb and Xorg. Looking a
the kernel warnings, there's probably a problem in the kernel driver
too. Also, the fact that you have UseFBDev in your xorg.conf probably
does not help, did you try without it?

Brice

Bug#400404: xserver-xorg-video-mga: corrupted display when scrolling

2007-05-07 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi Christian,

Does this display corruption still occur with the latest MGA driver?
1.4.6 is in unstable and contains some fixes, especially one about
graphics corruption on a Mystique board [1].

Thanks,
Brice

Bug#400505: xserver-xorg-video-mga: hangs on low AGP memory

2007-05-07 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi Jens,

If this hang on low AGP memory still happens with the latest MGA driver
in unstable (1.4.6), could you also your xorg.conf file? Also, do you
have a matroxfb-enabled console? There are some known problems with
conflicts between matroxfb and X, but they don't seem similar to your
problem.

Bug#152336: xserver-xfree86: [mga] console locks up on MGA 2064W rev 1

2007-05-07 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi,

About 5 years ago, you reported a bug to the Debian BTS regarding a
lockup of your machine while using X on a MGA 2064W board. Did you
reproduce this problem recently? With Xorg/Etch? If not, I will close
this bug in the next weeks.

Thanks,
Brice

I have Debian Woody and video card mentioned in subject.

It is very frustrating to do any pixmap-loading under this xserver. For
exampel under Mozilla some pics are only partially loded and the rest of
it is just black. Sometimes even whole WWW-pages are just black. In that
case pics become visible if I click them with my mouse. Sometimes
problem goes away, if I wait. If I load some background picture on root
window, it will make that just black. I was used to use a Gtk-theme
called pixmap under gdm, but it is no more possible, because many
areas are just black, then.

All this happens especcially with 32 bit depth. It helps a little bit,
if I use 16 bpp depth. I also stopped using desktop wallpapers and pixmaps
of gnome-panel.

2007-05-07 Thread Brice Goglin
Hi,

About 2 years ago, you reported a bug to the Debian BTS regarding
dualhead not working on a MGA G550 board. Did you reproduce this problem
recently? With Xorg/Etch? With latest MGA driver (1.4.6) currently in
unstable?

Thanks,
Brice

Package: libgl1-mesa-dev
Version: 6.4.2-1
Severity: normal

The mesa package at some point stopped providing GLw, breaking
the inventor build (#374303).

I understand that package libgl1-mesa-swx11-dev provides a static
GLw. It would be nice if libgl1-mesa-dev also provided it.

The trouble is that I normally want libgl1-mesa-dev but I cannot
simultaneously install libgl1-mesa-swx11-dev and libgl1-mesa-dev.
They both conflict with and provide libgl-dev. I do know about
pbuilder, but its rather more convenient for building and testing
fixes if my main environment can build it with libgl1-mesa-dev
installed.

Thanks,
-Steve

Thanks for taking action in this field! May I point you to bug #356558
[1] in this context? Shouldn't that one also be assigned to
xserver-xorg-video-mga? Maybe these issues are related.

Cheers,

I have not been able to determine whether this package is *supposed* to
work with DVI output on a Matrox G550 card. Does regular single-head
DVI operation require special Matrox modules?

Some problems have been reported [1,2] and should be fixed. I just pingued
your bug #372079 to know its status. I don't think it is a documentation
issue.

If the driver is slowly picking away at the closed-source, kind of
working and kind of not but expected to improve and would users please
report bugs -- that sort of thing -- that would be good to mention.

There are bugs, sorry, and few people to debug them or fix them, so it
takes time to get them fix. If DVI still does not work for you with
latest upstream, you might want to discuss this upstream and maybe even
help them debug/fix.

Brice

Bug#175911: xserver-xfree86: [mga] wrong modeline being sent to monitor at 1280x1024 on MGA G550 AGP rev 1

2007-05-07 Thread Brice Goglin
unfortunately nothing has changed wrt this bug. My MGA G550 is unusable
without the proprietary mga_hal module (which is quite a problem as
Matrox
support for this is quite low, e.g. the last released driver is for
Xorg 7.0
(but luckily also works with 7.1).

I'm on unstable with xorg 7.1.0-10 and the buggy behavior is still there.

Coming back to this bug now that there's the new MGA driver in unstable
(1.4.6).
If the bug still happens with this 1.4.6 driver, please let me know, we
should
forward it upstream.
There's some problems with G550 and DVI output, but this problems does not
seem DVI specific.

Thanks,
Brice

Not fixed for me here either. Reopened upstream.

So about 5 boots later I'am firmly confident that the problem shows

official debian kernel 2.6.20-1-k7. On 2.6.18 self compiled it's all
 good.

Do you see the problem with any kernel *without* this patch?

Yes in the other computer which has official debian kernel 2.6.20-1-k7.

What's your kernel command line?

Command line is root=/dev/sdb1 [EMAIL PROTECTED] splash=silent

Does the problem go away if you remove all parameters on the command line?

Can't test right now as I'am at work. I'll try when I'am at home.

If framebuffer console is enabled, could you try without it?

Yes I'll try with the debian kernel. With atifb disabled on kernel command line.

The problem could be related to a conflict between X and the framebuffer
console.

Ok

Also The black rectangles are only shown when in X. Not when I'am in a
 console with framebuffer.

Might the kernel be the source of the bug after all? Or is the kernel
doing something different and xorg is not upto it yet?

The kernel has to initialize some stuff and provide some mappings for X.
However, I would expect big X breakage in case of a bug in the kernel,
not such a tiny rendering artefact.

If the bug occurs with 2.6.20 and 2.6.21 but not in 2.6.18, it would be
very good to locate where it exactly appeared. I mean, try with 2.6.19,
and then try 2.6.18-rcX or 2.6.19-rcY, and then find the exactly git commit.

Yes it occurs on 2.6.20 and 2.6.21 but not 2.6.18 so I'll go for the 2.6.19
versions.

I'll compile a few tonight :)

I don't think it could be related to a gcc version mismatch between the
kernel and drm driver module since both are built and shipped within the
same package. If you compiled your own kernel, you should check that
drm, savage and agp modules are compiled loaded. Also check that
permissions on /dev/dri/* are ok? (should be 666 from your xorg.conf)

I have a config with two X displays, and it seems only the first one

Hi Giuseppe,

Since the bug is not entirely fixed for now, I am removing the
fixed-upstream tag. I guess you should reopen the upstream bug too.

Whenever you get a complete fix for upstream, please let us know.

A mousepad seems to work with evdev when dev is a symlink as well as the

This is quite problematic since those usb devices tend to use different
hardlink naming after replugs.

get X started automatically) and check whether the problem occurs.

Thank you Brice. The problem still occurs in this case.

I would rather say linux-image-2.6.20-1-amd64 since the headers are
basically useless as long as you don't build anything. Before
reassigning the bug to linux-2.6, it would be good to downgrade to the
 previous kernel (probably linux-image-2.6.18-foo-amd64, see
/var/log/dpkg.log) or reboot on it if it is still installed, and see
 whether the problems goes away.

I reinstalled linux-image-2.6.18-4-amd64, and rebuilt the nvidia driver
package for it, but something is wrong and I can't start any display
manager rebooting into that kernel. It's related to an nvidia version
mismatch between an xorg config file and the nvidia kernel (I didn't note
 the exact message, sorry).

I have a strong hunch it's the new linux kernel though, because the light
indicator worked during boot-up with the older kernel.

Ok, thank you for all the testing. I am reassigning this bug to the
kernel since:
* downgrading evdev did not fix the problem
* not starting X does not prevent the problem from occuring
* the kernel upgrade to 2.6.20 remains the latest candidate for this
breakage.
It would be good to get the old 2.6.18 kernel to work and confirm that
it does not show the bug.

FWIW, I'd prefer to see the clients in separate (binary) packages from
the server, which may be running on some other host.

Also, in general, do the programs in each new package all have similar
dependencies now? IIRC, one motivation for refactoring was complaints
about xbase-clients depending on a lot of libraries that only a
handful of the programs it contains actually needs, so it would be
unfortunate if such dependency pollution were still present.

My Xorg/Etch basically meant Xorg 7.1 with Xserver 2:1.1.1-21 and MGA
driver 1:1.4.4.dfsg.1-2.

Xorg 7.2 is now mostly in unstable, with many updates from upstream
including xserver-xorg-core 2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-3 and xserver-xorg-video-mga
1:1.4.6.1.dfsg.1-2. You might want to try it since it contains a couple
fixes. If the bug still occurs with these uptodate packages, we'll have
to forward your bug to the upstream bugzilla.

Note that you will have to upgrade to libc 2.5 to install these packages
from unstable. If this is a problem, you might want to try rebuilding
xserver-xorg-video-mga 1:1.4.6.1.dfsg.1-2 for Etch first.

When I removed the splash screen command line option (splashy) the
screen came clear. Tested on two computers. And a few boots.

When digging a bit in to splashy I found this:

http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/splashy-devel/2007-April/000674.html

So now it seems that it has been splashy 0.3.2 that caused the problems.

After updating to 0.3.3 I have not seen problems with any kernel or
xorg. (On a small number of boots though)

So I think this report can be closed and maybe before that moved to
splashy package?

Thank you for all the assistance!

xserver-xorg-video-nv should include the EXA patch from:

http://wiki.x.org/wiki/ExaStatus

Since XAA is used by default, there would be no user visible change. It would
however allow
people to test the EXA implementation for NVidia cards.

I was able to rebuild the nv driver after patching the sources and fixing
src/Makefile.am
manually (the patch is for the monolitic source tree, but applies cleanly if
you ignore the
Imakefile part). The fixup for src/Makefile.am is trivial: just add the new
source files
nv_exa.c nv_dma.c, then rebuild the Makefiles with automake.

The EXA enabled driver allows me to use the composite extension with KDE on a
1100 MHz Duron
and a GeForce2 MX 100 with acceptable performance and stability. Using the
proprietary Nvidia
driver will give you higher performance but is unstable with the composite
extension and
render acceleration. Not to mention that you will run into problems building
this driver if
your kernel is too new.

So all in all Debian would benefit by using this patch.

Bug#151613: xauth

2007-05-07 Thread Josip Rodin
Hi,

To get xauth, one currently has to get (but note that I had previously
pulled in libxp6 libxt6 libxtst6 and their dependencies):

% sudo aptitude --without-recommends install xbase-clients
[...]
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  fontconfig-config libdrm2 libfontconfig1 libfs6 libgl1-mesa-glx libxaw7
  libxcursor1 libxfixes3 libxft2 libxi6 libxkbfile1 libxmu6 libxmuu1
  libxpm4 libxrandr2 libxrender1 libxss1 libxtrap6 libxv1 libxxf86dga1
  libxxf86vm1 xbase-clients
0 packages upgraded, 22 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0B/2269kB of archives. After unpacking 6590kB will be used.

It's not as large as it used to be, but it's a bit more annoying :)

Splitting out xauth would be a Good Idea(TM). In this particular case,
I just want to run an X program over an ssh session; that's a legitimate,
even a relatively common use case, I think.

Maybe xbase-clients in general could be further split to separate things
that don't need all this font and OpenGL stuff. But xauth should be the
first to go.

hey, thanks for taking an interest.

I have not been able to determine whether this package is *supposed* to
work with DVI output on a Matrox G550 card. Does regular single-head
DVI operation require special Matrox modules?

Some problems have been reported [1,2] and should be fixed. I just pingued
your bug #372079 to know its status. I don't think it is a documentation
issue.

not sure i agree with the last statement. if it is known not to work
because of bugs, users need to know enough details (without wading
through bug reports) so that they don't get bloody concussions from
banging their heads against a brick wall. the ambiguous wording in
the man page imho invites those concussions. please, save the
foreheads.

(parenthetical note: i speak from experience. my non-working dvi
output on my pretty-common g550 video card has been a thorn in my side
for a really long time (years) and has led to this situation:

o i have to use xfree 4.2 with an outdated proprietary sourceless driver
o i have to keep many other packages held back to be consistent with that
o i therefore can't even use firefox, much less iceweasel, because
an infuriating bug,
apparently but not necessarily in a version of a gdk library that
cannot be upgraded,
decides to deliberately crash, randomly and frequently, instead of
simply failing the operation apparently not supported by xfree
(server does not implement
operation or some such).

i *don't* mean to complain about this, because everybody is a
volunteer and matrox is apparently making it really difficult for
people. i wish i could help more. my purpose in mentioning this is
to inform you that it is *not trivial* for a user to debug and fix
this sort of thing when his or her computer use is physically limited
(not everybody can do the typing required for debugging) or technical
expertise is limited. my main point is that it is worse when it's
hard to get a straightforward answer on whether it is even possible.
i don't know whether ubuntu's decision re drivers is relevant or not,
but it is imho understandable that ubuntu starts to look attractive if
the only alternative is to buy another video card. but other than
this one thorn, debian works ok

end parenthetical note.)

perhaps you mean that it is not JUST a documentation issue?

If the driver is slowly picking away at the closed-source, kind of
working and kind of not but expected to improve and would users please
report bugs -- that sort of thing -- that would be good to mention.

There are bugs, sorry, and few people to debug them or fix them, so it
takes time to get them fix. If DVI still does not work for you with
latest upstream, you might want to discuss this upstream and maybe even
help them debug/fix.

are you saying i should try again? if so, i'll try a fresh etch
install and the installer's x conf. i have been following the driver
version numbers and i don't think i saw any changes that might be
relevant. perhaps i missed something? it still seems like the man
page is ambiguous on whether single dvi is expected to work or not.
it still seems like it's not going to work.

perhaps i should try installing the ubuntu .deb for the driver if etch
doesn't work.

please do not close these bugs yet!

again, thanks for looking at this.

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.0.1-3
Severity: normal

[This is obviously an upstream bug]

I have a G400. My frame buffer size is set to 1600x1200,

when i set the resolution to 640x480 and pan around it seems to jump in
incremeents of about 8 pixels. This is presumably intentional? I find it
extremely disconcerting and annoying. That's not the bug though.

There is a bug in synchronizing the hot spot of the cursor with the panning
offset in between these jumps. If you use some application to show you where
the hot stop is (I just dragged a window) and pan left-right you'll see as you
push the cursor into the edge, the hot spot keeps moving (the window being
dragged keeps moving) even though the screen isn't panning and the actual mouse
cursor isn't moving. When the screen pans 8 pixels or so over the cursor jumps
and is again synchronized with the hot spot.

This has the effect of giving the cursor hot spot a random offset between 0-7
pixels or so every time the screen is panned. It's very frustrating.

I'll mention again that I consider the jump style panning extremely annoying.
The smooth panning of Xfree86 3 was very slick by comparison. Getting it back
would be preferable to just fixing up the cursor code to work around this
issue.

It's being discussed these days and might be done in the near future.
xauth is planned to be in its own package.

Is there any particular reason why this isn't Cc:ed to the BTS? :)

One thing that I would add is that it's not clear whether this would be a
source+binary split, or just binary. I went looking upstream, and noticed
that these programs are each in their own subtree under
git.freedesktop.org/xorg/app/ (list visible at http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/ )
xbase-clients currently appears to be a semi-random subset of those.

Given that these days both the drivers and the libraries are split, I think
that we would actually do the world a service if we stopped scheming how to
bump several programs into a smaller number of packages, and just Xu'ed the
whole thing. Pseudo-packages can exist to bump associated binary packages
together for the users' benefit, but there's no real reason to keep anything
else together.
