[Declude.JunkMail] Interbusiness

Every time I turn around these guys are hosting spam from a new/unknown range but RIPE
doesn't seem to have the cool name lookup that ARIN has. Does anyone have CIDRs/IPs

Sorry I missed the flury of activity - I was working on rule updates and
false positive adjustments - completely heads-down.

Just to clear things up, you are on the right track. Version 1 did not
pay attention to the authentication string. From version 2 and for now
on the authentication string matches only one specific license - so it
matters very much.

The current demo version is actually a valid license for sniffer2 that
doesn't receive updates as frequently as registered licenses. It has a
specific authentication string... 000 won't work. The reason it
doesn't fail messages in this case is that ERROR_RULE_AUTH is a "fail
safe" error... Since the wrong authentication code was used, Message
Sniffer gave up and passed all messages rather than causing a problem.

For details on error messages and configuration please see:

http://www.sortmonster.com/MessageSniffer/TechnicalDetails.html

The Readme files in the sniffer2 distribution contain the correct
authentication string for the demo. You should cut and paste to avoid
typing errors.

If anyone has problems configuring Message Sniffer please send a note to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] We monitor the Declude list as much as possible
but not always as a top priority.

Sorry about the confusion.

THANKS!

Do you happen to have some of the legit mail saved that Sniffer failed

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] New feature

2003-01-28 Thread R. Scott Perry

There's a new per-host security feature in IMail 7 that, if enabled, will
bounce incoming messages if the sub-mailbox does not already exist -- it
WILL NOT be created. I've found several cases of sub-mailboxes that had
never been accessed, and the user was checking his account only by client,
so he couldn't have created it and obviously had no idea it even
existed. I assume they were created by spammers hitting a user account
such [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a message to a
hyphenated variation of the username such as
[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- a sub-mailbox named
"joe" would be created under the account of "billy." I do have the
"bounce if sub-mailbox does not exist" option enabled. Are you not aware
of this, or does JunkMail/Declude have a way to work around it?

I believe that IMail would have to allow the folders to be created by
Declude, but I will do some testing on that.

Yes, they can be accessed by POP3 client.
Create a new account in the client, and set the POP3/Incoming Server Account
Name as
user-submailbox  --  "billy-spam" for
example, instead of "billy"

If it's a user on a virtual host (other than the
default host), then set the full email address as the POP3 account -- [EMAIL PROTECTED]

WebMail "sent" and "deleted" folders can be
accessed by POP3 client using the same method.

This will be available in the next release. Instead of:

 WEIGHT1 ROUTETO [EMAIL PROTECTED]

you should be able to use:

 WEIGHT1 ROUTETO [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This will route the E-mail to the appropriate folder, based on the name
of the recipient. For example, is "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" gets spam, it would
get sent to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" (the "joe" folder of the user
"spam").

Thanks Scott!!

One question, will the folder be automatically created or would we have to
create a folder for each user? And if we have to create each folder what
happens if the folder is not there???

Thanks...

Adam

This will be available in the next release. Instead of:

 WEIGHT1 ROUTETO [EMAIL PROTECTED]

you should be able to use:

 WEIGHT1 ROUTETO [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This will route the E-mail to the appropriate folder, based on the name of
the recipient. For example, is "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" gets spam, it would get
sent to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" (the "joe" folder of the user "spam").

Scott,

I have a new feature request:

This would be for the ROUTETO action, to have the emails moved to individual
folders for each users email address. This way when we use the ROUTETO
command instead of having all the emails in the main mailbox and not knowing
who they were addressed to without opening, we could go into the individual
folders for each user.

My thought on the ROUTETO folder Action would be:

WEIGHT1 ROUTETO [EMAIL PROTECTED]username

This would be in the junkmail file, where the USERNAME would grab the part
of the email address before the @ sign and direct it to a folder.

Thoughts???

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] WhiteList Per User

2003-01-28 Thread R. Scott Perry

sorry I'm catching on this a bit late, but please let me know if the use of
a whitelist filter in the form of:
WHITELIST WHITELISTFILE D:\IMail\Declude\Whitelist.txt x
 0 0

No.

"WHITELIST" lines in the \IMail\Declude\global.cfg file are used to
whitelist E-mail based on certain criteria (for example, "WHITELIST FROM
[EMAIL PROTECTED]"). The lines in the format you show above are test
definitions, which define new spam tests (in your case, it would be a spam
test called WHITELIST, of a type "whitelistfile" (which isn't a valid type
of spam test). Anything in the global.cfg file will be used system-wide,
and can not be applied just to specific domains or users.

The per-user/per-domain whitelisting works by adding a line in the format
"WHITELISTFILE D:\IMail\Declude\Whitelist.txt" to one of the per-user or
per-domain configuration files (any of the *.JunkMail files). This will
point to a text file, that currently can have one E-mail address or partial
E-mail address per line, such as:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
@example.org
...

is available only for the PRO version? or it can be set for the standard
versionas well?

It will work with all versions (but will only work in files that your
version -- for example, Declude JunkMail Standard allows customizing
per-domain, so Declude JunkMail wouldn't look at a per-user configuration
file).

[Declude.JunkMail] open relay testing

2003-01-28 Thread Smart Business Lists
Inspired by the recent PERCENT test discussion I thought someone might
be interested in open relay testing programs. The following is not
exhaustive as you might imagine but I've used all of these.

Online you can test at:
http://www.ordb.org/submit/
but if you fail then you are added to the database.

or http://www.abuse.net/relay.html
has 2 modes - one of which tries to actually send a message.

or http://www.openrelaycheck.com
has a program you download and can use to check -
provides a realistic test but not exhaustive and will not find the
   same vulnerabilities that ordb does.

or http://www.monkeys.com/mrt/
the copyright is very restrictive but if you want to test yourself
like ORDB tests then this will do it. In Perl for Unix but will
run on Windows with Perl 5.8.

http://www.whitehats.com/library/mailrelay/ has a page that shows the
19 or so common tests - very useful.

and of course the "who hasn't gotten mail from"

or you could write a component in Perl to do it

A couple of warnings though:
1) it is easier to lookup the IP from whois.arin.net
   or apnic or ripe
but ARIN, et al is sometimes not very accurate

2) whereas the domain whois registrars are now legion
and employ a remarkable number of output differences

3) most domain whois registrars have limits on lookups
that apply to both rate and total number

No.
We've had the same problem with 5 other clients sending messages to
users on the ISP inode.at
Adding per domain configigurations to this 5 domains will not prevent
that other clients (domains) will have the same problem in the future.
This solution is something like whitelisting. Because inode.at is
geographicaly near to us it is realistic that there will be a lot of
future issues.

Or inode has set realy to bounce all X-RBL-Warnings, or their Exim MTA
see "SPAMCHK:" after "X-RBL-Warning:" as a separate header as assumed
from David Fletcher

I will try to contact inode's postmaster...

You can interact with MS DNS through DDNS (though there too, you'd
have to either shell with ASPExec or make a COM DLL for ASP). But I'm
still not clear on what Paul's project is and where's he's stuck. He
implied that he was already able to program the DNS server (maybe just
through zone files, as he didn't mention an API specifically), but
hadn't figured out how to query DNS yet.

I'm sure he'll clear it up.
