RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Reverted to 2.6.11 - FWIW...

2005-10-27 Thread David Barker
Mark,

Thank you for this post it is very useful. I am taking this information to
our developers to see what else we can find I will let you know as soon as
we can possibly identify the problem.

The only difference between you and all our other customers is that you have
a load balancer doing a round-robin, also at this point it is only your
servers that are experiencing this problem.

We will keep trying to resolve this.

Subject: [Declude.JunkMail] Reverted to 2.6.11 - FWIW...

I'm posting this to give as much information as possible, not to put the
guys at declude in a bad light. They're doing a great job and we love their
product!

Something either wrong with all 4 of our servers or there's a big problem in
3.x

I've got 4 Dell PE 1650's dual proc. 1.4Ghz machines with 2GB ram each,
Windows 2003 Server Std, SP1.
We run Sophos AV for the OS itself and exclude the entire \imail folder (and
its sub-folders) All 4 are behind two clustered Foundry Server Iron load
balancers.
The load balancer does a round-robin redirect of SMTP traffic
(A,B,C,D,A,B,C,D).
We do about 400,000 messages a day which means about 100,000 per server in
Imail Gateway mode only.
The only services we run on Imail are Monitor, SMTP, and QueueMgr.

one AV scanner (fProt -- on demand not installed).
Message sniffer
Spamchk
Various filters

We've been running declude for 3-4 years with no problems.
In 2.06 we ran MAXPROCESSES at 30 and could process about 1000 messages in
the spool folder in less than 4 mins.

About a month ago we went to 3.x and suffered from lots of decludeproc
crashes.
Started at maxthreads at 30 -- CPU ran constantly at 100%.
We finally had to drop to maxthreads 15 to get a good spike pattern.

Working with declude (which by the way are always helpful) we tried to
isolate the problem.
Removed the AV scanner, removed all externals, etc.
Decludeproc still crashed.
We thought it was specific messages but after testing we would move the
messages in the \review folder back to the \proc folder and decludeproc
would NOT crash.

Anyway, we had to go back to 2.6.11 the other day. Too many crashes and
delays in mail delivery.
When decludeproc would crash, Imail SMTP would continue to deliver, the proc
folder would build up causing a massive queue backup.
Too many users complained so we reverted. The servers are back to normal
FAST delivery.

I should also point out that when 3.0 would run (between the crashes) it
didn't keep up with the load that 2.6 could. In other words, if we would put
1000 messages in the \spool folder in 2.6 we could process them in about 3
mins. In 3.0 1000 messages in the \proc folder would take more like 8 mins
to clear out.

This is not the case. The only time the start command is used is with the

It is not necessary to stop the SMTP service. All declude.exe will do when

In the process of preparing to switch from IMail to SmarterMail we had a server with an out of the box SmarterMail install on it for a few days and got blacklisted by Comcast for being an open relay. Everything has been corrected now and we have sent multiple emails to Comcast advising them of the corrections and asking for a retest and to be removed from the blacklist but to no avail. Has anyone run this gauntlet before? Any pointers, contact numbers, etc. that we might be able to use to speed things along? Our customers are getting restless. Thanks,Evans Martin

Evans,

No contacts but a thought - you could temporarily gateway the mail through
another server outbound that is not blocked. I had to do this for one of my
clients who got on AOL's bad side until we squared the issue up with AOL.

Not that your on imail, but it has a nice feature to gateway mail to another
host on x amount of errors sending... Not sure if smartermail has that
option.

Just a thought.

Then what was causing the Decludeproc service to start in early versions of
3.0.x during testing of the problems with certain spam messages that were
causing crashes? This was before the /review directory was added. I will
have to go back to my notes late tonight to see what version this was.

 John,

This is not the case. The only time the start command is used is with
 the installer.

It is not necessary to stop the SMTP service. All declude.exe will do
when receiving a message is move it to the \proc directory, therefore
upgrading decludeproc should not effect the operation of Imail receiving
email.

David, you need to amend your sequence:

Imail SMTP service must be stopped before stopping the Decludeproc
service else if a new message is handed to declude.exe and declude.exe
finds Decludeproc is not running, it sends a start command. At least
 this was
the
 case prior to 3.0.5x.

Heimir,

Yes, that is a known issue of that version. Also, in case you have not
noticed MAILFROM is also broken in that version. You need to upgrade to a
later version. 3.0.5.9 is the release where it is fixed.
