The prices for the AVG mail server version isn't much better than F-Prot.
They only list prices up to 100 mailboxes - $1,030 for 2 years.

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] F-Prot Licensing

2006-07-17 Thread Matt

Nick,

One other thing about this. It's not the scan time that is the most
important, it's the CPU utilization. As it turns out, they are roughly
related, and clearly clamdscan and F-Prot are the best performers by a
mile. Back when I did my tests of these things, those two ran neck and
neck, hardly registering any load, and then with a big jump, McAfee and
AVG were third and fourth best.

I have minimized the affects by doing AV scanning after the JunkMail
scanning, which is behind an Alligate gateway, so many fewer messages
get scanned for viruses, but still AV scanning is a major contributer to
overall load.

I had done some comparison on the scanners - and had sent this to the

recorded -

here are some sample scan times against the same email -
2062ms Clamscan
468ms Mcafee scan.exe
171ms fprot

These relative scan time proportional differences appear to remain the
same against other emails.

Switching from clamscan.exe to clamdscan.exe ClamAV averages 15ms
against all emails it sees. That is like a factor of 10 faster than
fprot its closest performance competitor. Since its free and
w/Sanesecurity phish sigs I give it an editors choice :)

It would be nice to see [feature request?] the ms response time for

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] F-Prot Licensing

2006-07-17 Thread Kevin Bilbee
So it seems that market forces are not causing the price to drop. It is causing
the price to increase. There are ever more players in the antivirus market but
pricing continues to go up. The market force of "absolute need for antivirus on
the mail server" is outweighing the number of companies supplying antivirus
command line scanners.

What is the breaking point.

F-Prot doesn't care.  They don't do volume as a plug-in to mail

software product for Exchange and their own spam and virus blocking

those sales is insubstantial to them.  It is true that they could have

I think everyone on this list
should email them telling them that you are not renewing.  I don’t
think they have any idea of how much business they will lose.  If 100
people email them it may wake them up.  I wouldn’t hold my breath on
that, but it can’t hurt to try.

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] F-Prot Licensing

2006-07-17 Thread David Barker
Just a comment on this Licensing thread

F-Prot like all virus companies charge the extra $ because of the different
process used when scanning email as opposed to regular scanning. Declude has
this process and functionality built in to the Declude product which enables
customers to use a command line scanners like ClamWin to scan their email in
the same way, as virus companies mail server versions.

Not to mention AVG which is built into Declude Security Suite, which
hopefully customers will now begin to really understand the value and
financial benefits to this integration.

I am going away for sure.
Its NO way I will pay that much money to use a command line scanner.
There are no difference between the mail server version and the regular
version besides the license.

Its a rip off.

I will NOT spend 1750 bucks on Declude for that matter.

I guess I will be busy finding replacements.

Re: [Declude.JunkMail] F-Prot Licensing

2006-07-14 Thread Ncl Admin
According to something I read on the Alligate Support forumn at least as
far back as March. Interesting that they have never issued much of a press
release on it to there customer base. Tho I licensed mine in Februrary of
this year so I'm good for a bit.
