Computerized Horizons has just released Declude Virus v1.30. Notable
changes include:

o Major overhaul to MIME decoding functions to support further enhancements
o Declude's dependency on user32.dll was removed, which (should) prevent
Declude from counting towards the depletion of Microsoft's Mystery Heap.
o DELIVERERRORS ON config option will allow E-mail that a scanner reports
an error on to be delivered (if neither a "Virus free" or "Virus found"
code is returned).
o TEMPDIR config option to let you choose the temporary directory that
Declude scans files in (to allow usage with on-access scanners that can't
exclude subdirectories, and for RAM disk support)
o Will automatically detect F-Prot.PIF file and delete it if necessary, to
prevent halt of E-mail delivery.
o PRO version adds internal support for multiple virus scanners.

Also, the size of the Declude.exe has been shrunk to about 1/2 of its
original size, so don't be alarmed if it appears small. The beta can be
downloaded from http://www.declude.com/junkmail/support/ip4r.htm .

Re: [Declude.Virus] Multiple Scanner Support - Pricing

2001-12-18 Thread Serge Dergham

That would have been true if everyone had to pay for a new feature.
but the fact that the pro version get the new feature free, and the standard
version do not is not right.
If everybody had to pay for it, or if there was some type of support
contract, I would be the first one to accept.
But this is a sort of descrimination against the chipies :)
When I bought the product, there was nothing that said that the pro version
will get additional features in the future for free.

Re: [Declude.Virus] Declude v1.30 released (beta)

> > o PRO version adds internal support for multiple virus scanners.
>
>Com'on, the main feature of pro version is multi-domain support,
>support for multiple scanner should be available for everybody !

There were a few reasons that this was only added to the Pro version. The
primary reason was a marketing one, to help increase the sales of the Pro
version. But, before I explain further, I should point out that you can
use multiple scanners with the Standard version -- but you need to write a
batch file to do it. So you aren't being left out.

The original idea behind the split to Standard and Pro versions was the
Standard version would include everything needed for basic virus scanning
(and then some), and the Pro version would offer extra functionality beyond
that. That way, we wouldn't lose sight of our main customer base
(typically companies that are careful about what they spend their money
on), since there aren't any "gotchas" with the Standard version. The
Standard version will "just do it", and catch the viruses.

The Pro version is designed for companies that need more than just standard
virus scanning. If a company wants to have some of their mail unscanned,
they should pay extra for that privilege. If they need the "warm and
fuzzy" feeling of having multiple scanners (and don't want to write the
batch file), they'll need to pay extra (note that the $20,000 SMTP-based
virus scanners only use one AV engine). That way, we can have extra
revenue coming in to help keep us ready for the future, while at the same
time still offering the low-cost Standard version.

Speaking of which, there is a chance that we will change things around
more, especially now that IMail AntiVirus is out. We may add a third
version, or change prices around somewhat. However, we still are committed
to making sure that our existing customer base doesn't get lost. We do not
expect to raise the price of the Standard version, or limit it in any way
(aside from the features that are already in the Pro version, or new features).

While I'm at it, we are also working on a new feature unavailable in any
other AV program (that we know of), that can stop the automatic spread of
viruses completely, that will also be going into the Pro version. It's
similar to banning all .PIF, .SCR, .VBS, etc. files, except that it is
virtually foolproof, and people can still send any files they want to.

FYI, something else I should mention. Now that Declude has been out for
over a year (about 15 months now), we are going through the process of
deciding whether or not to add an annual "maintenance agreement" that would
include a year of support and upgrades. We likely will be adding this, but
of course it would not be mandatory (IE you can keep running Declude
forever), and would definitely not try to prevent virus definition upgrades
(so you wouldn't be forced to upgrade each year to be able to catch the
latest viruses).

Good question!

You can have up to 5 different virus scanners. You add them by adding the
same "SCANFILE", "VIRUSCODE", "REPORT" and "OKCODE" lines that you would
normally add, except there will be a number after them to indicate which
scanner it applies to. So, where you might have the following now:

 SCANFILEC:\Scanner\scan.exe /ALL
 VIRUSCODE 13
 REPORT Found

You might change it to:

 SCANFILE1 C:\Scanner\scan.exe /ALL
 VIRUSCODE1 13
 REPORT1 Found

 SCANFILE2 C:\Scanner2\scaner.exe
 VIRUSCODE2 3
 VIRUSCODE2 6
 REPORT2 Infection

Note that if you don't include the scanner number, "1" is assumed (so you
don't have to change the existing settings).

>That would have been true if everyone had to pay for a new feature.

Does that mean we should offer two identical products with different names,
and charge different for them? :)

>But this is a sort of descrimination against the chipies :)
>When I bought the product, there was nothing that said that the pro version
>will get additional features in the future for free.

... and nothing that said it wouldn't. If we only added new features to
both versions, then after a few years you would see two products that were
nearly identical by that point.

Our goal is to keep the Standard version as a highly competitive product,
that has all the features that a mail server virus scanner really should
have. On the other hand, when there are features that go well beyond what
other products offer, we may need to add them to the Pro version
only. Note that the Standard version includes some features that aren't
included in the much more expensive SMTP-based virus scanners

With this feature, I would also suggest that you remember that you still
can use multiple scanners in the Standard version using batch files. That
was one of the main factors in the decision to have the internal multiple
scanner support only offered in the Pro version -- because the same
functionality *can* be accomplished in the Standard version with a little work.

You can go to a command prompt, and type "declude -diag" and it will let
you know. For example, at the end of the display it may show "Declude
Virus Status: Standard version registered". If you ordered Declude Virus

Yes, anyone who has the Standard version can upgrade to the Pro version for

Yes. All the virus scanners will always be called. Although there is a
small amount of extra CPU time used, it only occurs if a virus is actually
found. That also gives you the option of looking at the logs to see which

2001-12-18 Thread FIRST Internet Declude Virus Account

Scott,

How could you possibly continue to improve on an already great
product - You/Computer Horizons have done a great job on this
product. I'm impressed by its robustness, reliability and
features -- all for much much less than we'd have to pay to handle
our current load with some other product.

I'm hoping to take advantage of the multiple domain support of
Declude PRO on our commercial hosting machines down the road.

Every day that I don't have to reboot my NT mail server is a
testament to the robustness of Declude -- On one of our main
servers (and the only one that I run Declude on right now) it
processes over 200,000 messages a day, all scanned with Declude,
on a Dual 1Ghz/512MB RAM SCSI system. I never thought I'd see the
day where we could provide our customer base some real AV
protection (without the necessity of me reacting to pager alerts
every 15 minutes).

Great Job!

Re: [Declude.Virus] Declude v1.30 released (beta)

2001-12-18 Thread Matthew Lohr

Now I am pissed off. I finally just got the license to Innoculan and you already
upgraded your product. Can you slow down a little man? I operate on slow to stop.
(Just Kidding) I am trying to add a second virus scanner in and don't see
instructions in your online manual. The scanner is Innoculan and is not as formatted
in the instructions. So I changed the line from

SCANFILE C:\Scanner\inocucmd.exe
VIRUSCODE 100

to
SCANFILE C:\Inoculan\inoculan.exe
VIRUSCODE 100

And I am getting repeated timeouts on delivering mail as such in the log

Now after this gets fixed can you hold off on the updates until I fully understand the

You need to be careful when telling Declude to start a program, unless you
know what it does. In the case of Inoculan.exe, I believe that it pops up
a window asking the user to go through menus and press buttons and such to
let it know what to do. Declude can't do that. The program will just sit
in memory until the timeout occurs, at which point Declude will terminate it.

With Innoculan, you need to use the inocucmd.exe file. I believe that is
the only file they have that works as a command line scanner. You may need
to do a Full Install to get it to install. It's also possible that the
version of Innoculan you have doesn't include a command line scanner (we
have a copy that says it includes one, but we couldn't find it).

This is part of a new feature that is in development. Nothing will happen
as a result of this (aside from the log file entry).

Well actually it is working better now. It is kind of like when I first installed
declude. It acted funny for about 10 min and ever since has run flawlessly. I am
getting no more time outs. I have f-prot as the first scanner and innoculan as the
second. We got the latest version of inoculan so I will read up on the instructions a
bit more and let you know what I find about the command line scanner. Now can ya slow

Declude needs somewhere to temporarily store the files that need to be
scanned. By default, Declude uses temporary directories off of the
\IMail\spool directory (IE \IMail\spool\Q1234567.vir\).

There have been requests to be able to change the directory that the files
are scanned in, for two reasons: First, so that a RAM drive could be used
(which would likely offer better performance), and second, so that
on-access virus scanners can be more easily set up to exclude the
directories that Declude scans in (IE you could have Declude scan in
C:\AVTemp, and have a scanner exclude that directory, rather than "the
subdirectories off of \IMail\spool").

I am using McAfee with no problems but I have the Pro

McAfee loaded and monitoring files outside of Imail but
I am wondering how others install multiple antivirus without
problems. Do I disable Netshield all together and install
F-Protect? Do conflicts arise? I'd like to install F-Protect
and have both McAfee and F-Protect scan files via this new
Declude feature, but not have any potential conflicts...

What is the bst way to avoid this...???

The main concern is making sure that an on-access scanner (one running in
the background that constantly scans files as they are saved to the hard
drive) doesn't interfere with Declude. There are several ways it can
interfere: It can lock the file (in which case Declude can't access it),
or it could delete viruses (in which case the command-line scanner that
Declude uses won't see a virus, and will report it is virus-free, so
Declude will deliver the E-mail...). If you do have an on-access scanner
running, you can set it up not to scan the subdirectories off of
\IMail\spool, and it won't be able to conflict with Declude.

As far as the command line scanners go (the piece that Declude uses), they
won't conflict with each other. Declude will take care of calling them as
needed.

Actually - it would make most sense to turn off the on-access scanning for
the Spool directory itself in addition to the sub-directories. Given the
frequence of file access/create/deletions, it may save some resources and
eliminates the need to define an alternate temp directory.

we should look at this as an option and perhaps add a second scanner (maybe

If it is just used for Declude's scanning, it should be large enough to
handle ( (n * max) + overhead ) bytes, where "n" is the maximum number of
E-mails that could be scanned simultaneously (which should be either 30, or
the value of IMail's MaxQueProc entry), and "max" is the maximum size that
an E-mail could be, and "overhead" is anything else that needs to be
accounted for (bytes used by the OS).

In reality, it depends on the largest file size you would typically get,
and how often large files are transmitted. There isn't an easy answer to
the best size. For most servers, just over 10 megs ought to do (assuming
the largest E-mail to be scanned is around 10 megabytes), because you won't
usually scan multiple E-mails at the same time, and won't usually have
several large files being scanned at the same time. 32 megs or so should
be fairly safe for most domains.

Re: [Declude.Virus] Multiple Scanner Support - Pricing

2001-12-18 Thread Jerry Murdock

Have you ever known a product with Pro and Standard versions to always add new
features to both? Generally Standard version are effectively feature-frozen
until a major upgrade. Declude has continually put most of the incremental
upgrades into the Standard version. Saving a few bells and whistles for the
Pro version is to be expected.

No, that won't limit it. The MAXATONCE only limits the number of scanner
processes that can be running at the same time. Declude decodes the files
first, and then checks to see if there are free processes to run the scanner.
