[Bug 30794] [Dapper] Fails to detect parport printers
Public bug reported: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/30794 Affects: gnome-cups-manager (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: When I go to System->Administration->Printing, then try to add my printer, I can't see it, it's not detected. However it used to be detected perfectly (at least Warty and Hoary did, not 100% sure about Breezy). If I select the printer manually from the list, it works, though I am presented with no less than 4 different drivers and have no clue what to choose ! When I look at the kernel log in /var/log/dmesg, I can see that the printer has been perfectly detected at boot: [4294702.734000] parport: PnPBIOS parport detected. [4294702.735000] parport0: PC-style at 0x378, irq 7 [PCSPP,TRISTATE] [4294702.742000] parport0: Printer, Hewlett-Packard HP LaserJet 6P ...so I assumed it must be CUPS at fault (not knowing any better) ? -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Public bug reported: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/30786 Affects: gimp (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: I can't print with Gimp, there is simply no "Print" option in the "File" menu or anywhere. [Bug 30785] ACPI Monitoring Fails in Some Laptops
Public bug reported: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/30785 Affects: gnome-applets (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: Monitoring things like the battery through ACPI seems to fail entirely in certain model laptops, including the Gateway Solo 5300. This was the machine that it was tested on, but it is reported that this problem occurs in a number of other laptops of different makes and models. PRIMARY EXAMPLE: In /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state (analyzed using cat) the status of the battery does not change from its initial reading (at boot), apart from whether it is charging or discharging. It does, however, read the correct charge at boot. It just never changes. Naturally, this causes all battery monitoring programs to fail, including the GNOME "battstat" battery monitoring applet. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 30783] [Dapper] ISO files don't have a custom icon anymore
Public bug reported: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/30783 Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: ISO files used to have a nice icon of their own, to make them stand out in Nautilus. But recently I noticed that it's gone, and they only have a very generic text file-like icon. Kinda a regression. [Bug 30782] [Dapper] Copy/Paste doesn't always work
Public bug reported: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/30782 Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: I have problems copy/pasting files with Nautilus. sometimes it works, but often it doesn't. It's easily reproducible though, in that that the files that it refuses to paste, will never work. For example I tried (as root) to copy/paste the file /usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/gnome-main-menu.png and it failed: it copied it, but when I selected "Paste", nothing happened at all. I tried as a simple user too, and same problem... some files can be copied, some can't. It works fine with Dapper Flight 3, the problem appeared after I updated it. I can't see any error messages when starting Nautilus from a terminal, so I have no clue what's wrong. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 30781] Partitions disappeared
Public bug reported: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/30781 Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: I installed Dapper Flight 3, and mounted several partitions under /media so I can easily access them from Nautilus under "Places", in the left pane. That worked fine, as expected. Then, I updated Dapper, and now, Nautilus doesn't display my partitions anymore, anywhere. [Bug 30757] dapper gnome-session linked against libdbus-1.so.1
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/30757 Comment: I wasn't trying to install anything in particular. This is a breezy install that I upgraded to dapper (on December 31st if the mtime on /etc/apt/sources.list can be trusted). I just pointed apt at the newer release and periodically run 'apt-get upgrade' and 'apt-get dist- upgrade' when it looks safe. It was such a dist-upgrade that removed libdbus-1.so.1. Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/24010 Task: ubuntu gthumb Assignee: Martin Pitt => Daniel Holbach Comment: While I was at this I also found a second crasher. I uploaded workarounds in gthumb (3:2.7.2-0ubuntu3) dapper; urgency=low . * Add debian/patches/05_gth_browser_NULL_paths.dpatch to fix two crashers in src/gth-browser.c, go_to_directory_continue(): - If dir_list->path is NULL at program startup, set it to get_home_uri() to have a reasonable default. - Check for NULL dir_list->try_path in the result code check (sometimes happens on photo import from camera). However, you (and/or upstream) should review them, particularly the -> path change is pretty hideous. Therefore I leave the bug open and reassign it back to Daniel. [Bug 26483] Ubuntu5.10 not configured for Alsa device:surround51; Alsa-esd incompatibilities.
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/26483 Comment: Did you read my last comments Sebastien? I am using the default Ubuntu set-up with linux-image2.6.12-10-686-smp, version 2.6.12-10.26 and alsa-base 1.0.9b-4. I want to use several applications with Alsa driver 'surround51' (6 channels: FrontLeft, FrontRight, Centre, RearLeft, RearRight and Woofer). Applications: aplay, xmms, xine and mplayer. If Ubuntu and Alsa were properly matched I would expect correct operation of all applications. Unfortunately I find the following problems: All the applications (aplay, xmms, xine and mplayer), using Alsa device 'surround51', while playing, cause Alsa to output continuously: 'ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:802:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave' to $HOME /.xsession-errors (Details in previous comment). Some applications using Alsa device 'surround51' launched from GnomePanel either give an error message or do not start to reproduce sound for about 7 seconds: 'xmms' and 'xine' give error messages; 'aplay -Dsurround51 File.wav' does not start for about 7 seconds (Details in previous comment). 'xmms' and 'aplay -Dsurround51 File.wav' start all right if 'esd' is not running (stopped by 'killall esd'). Note: All the applications (aplay, xmms, xine and mplayer) start all right and do not cause Alsa to output error messages to $HOME/.xsession- errors if they are configured for Alsa device 'default'. Hope I have made myself clear this time. Please run 'aplay -Dsurround51 File.wav' (A big file) launched from GnomePanel (Steps described in previous comment) in an Ubuntu system and check 7 seconds delay in starting and error messages in $HOME/.xsession-errors. [Bug 30749] Tabs disappear in core Gnome applications
Public bug reported: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/30749 Affects: gtk+2.0 (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: When opening more than a few tabs in Gnome applications like Gedit, Epiphany etc, earlier tabs suddenly disappear with no warning and almost without trace. All that is seen are two tiny arrows beside the tabs which allows the user to scroll the tab list to reach the other tabs. When this happens the first few times it's a very confusing, and also scary and upsetting experience - "where did my important tab go?" "Did I save?" "Please, please, please be in my history". After finding out what actually happens, and at least understanding it, it is just incredibly annoying and unusable. The huge advantages that tabs offer are totally lost: instant overview and one-click access. Without those, might as well use separate windows like Internet Explorer or Notepad, although they only get as inaccessible after their windows have grouped on the task list. Almost all other tabbed systems shrink their tabs when needing to, and it works great for them. A few expand into multiple rows instead. I thought long and hard before filing this bug, because this is a sensitive question apparently - common opinion is that this is a 50/50-issue, some love this, others hate it. Personally I've mostly seen hate, and I deeply, strongly feel that this must be addressed one way or the other, so here goes. Summary on current behaviour: * It is scary, surprising and confusing * It takes away the instant overview of tabs * It takes away the instant access of tabs I suggest that: * GtkNotebook gets another mode of operation, where tabs shrink instead of disappear when space becomes scarce. * If use open an incredible amount of tabs, it's ok to disappear them though, we can't do magic and there's just so many pixels. * Old mode of operation is also kept, and a global preference for the whole Gnome desktop switches all GtkNotebooks to either behaviour for all using applications. * Default is changed to Resize, because: - That is what any tab savvy user is used to - That doesn't scare by making things disappear suddenly - It's better usability with instant overview and access * Nice to have: multiple row tabs as third option. So, you heard me right. I propose to add extra options to Gnome. =) I think it's warranted though. If it's such a 50/50 issue, there can hardly be a good default. The current behaviour is scary and unintiuitive, but have a loyal following. Those should be able to retain their experience, just like there is spatial and non-spatial Nautilus. For a more humorous rant on this frustration, I wrote this post a little while back: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=124068 =) -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
