[Bug 32299] GNOME ADD TO PANEL AND "ACCESSIBILITY" FONT
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32299 Comment: Thanks for the info. I didn't know about drag & drop for the panel applets. [Bug 33002] logout dialog UI regression -- please revert
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/33002 Comment: The dialog made it into dapper as part of a design that was made at UBZ (there wasn't a good/clear shutdown dialog in breezy -- we set out to design a better one) Apparently, the GNOME upstream people decided this _at the same time_ as us, and implemented dialogs that are more HIG-compliant and overall nicer looking. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Only the cancel button actually *looks* like a button 2. No other dialog on the desktop has two rows of icons (principle of least surprise) 3. The icons don't fit within the rest of the theme If we revert, we should also consider removing the panel icon. Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/22393 Comment: I don't know whether to submit this under the same bug or a new one, but I have the same problem with assigning shortcuts to Rhythmbox. I'm using Breezy i386 on an Acer 2300. Same thing: I tried assigning a to something and the a became unusable, and "a" is now mapped to something like 0x5f (some hexidecimal value). [Bug 31122] rhythmbox freezes on startup
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/31122 Comment: Very interesting: if I run "rhythmbox -d" I get a huge output and it all works. Actually I have to run it about 3-4 times and then it works; the first time it starts and then freezes, the second time it gets further and freezes and then it works fine. I tried redirecting the output from "rhythmbox -d" to a file but the times it freezes there is no output. When it finally works there is a huge text output (about 2.5M); I could try to send it to you if you need but I don't know how to attach it to this page. [Bug 31402] gnome-session properties hangs, when writing to files it doesn't have permisions to modify
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/31402 Comment: This is a bit more complicated, gnome-session-properties is quite broken currently and I'll try to explain it now. The first thing is that when gnome-session-properties can't delete appropriate .desktop file it hangs and needs to be killed by hand. This is very bad, GUI should pop a nice message up and let the user carry on as. That's what I ment when I filled this bug. Let's suppose it does work this way. Unfortunately Joe Average still won't be able to stop programs declared in /usr/share/autostart from launching at login. There should be some way to disable them and make gnome-session ignore them. We can't exept each and every e.g. KDE package maintaner will remember to declare "OnlyShowIn=KDE;" and vice versa. That was the second problem I have also found out that gnome-session-properties doesn't actually write stuff to ~/.local/share/autostart/*.desktop as it should do when user adds programs to his startup. It does show on startup programs list, but dissapears after logout and subsequent login. Trying to delete it hangs g-s-p and strace gives following message: unlink("/home/kelner/.local/share/autostart/ps.desktop") = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) so there are 3 related, but separate bugs: I: gnome-session-properties hangs when it fails to delete .desktop file II: can't disable startup programs listed in /usr/share/autostart III: gnome-session doesn't create .desktop files for user-defined startup apps. II and III both lead to I, but are different issues and IMHO should be treated as such. Hope this clarified thing a bit. Guess it confused you a lot more ;) -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 32951] [Dapper] Windows networking broken in Nautilus
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32951 Comment: Thank you for working on Ubuntu (and dealing promptly with that issue). Of cause I understand that Dapper is somewhat unstable - that was one of the reasons I was going to track it and to report bugs. Ubuntu being a community project I am also accepting the glitches (that is not about a closely monitored continuous integration dicipline). However most of what I have written is also about choice. I am looking for a Linux distribution that supports choice for the technically illiterate or semi-illiterate and I think I have found this distribution in Ubuntu. This type of choice sometimes is at odds with Debian's idea of choice - making things more complex might give more options to people that are technically literate, but the average user might pay the price for this. Windows networking is a point in case. Both homes and offices are full of networked Windows boxes and as long as I stay inside the Windows world everything is plug and play (in practical terms, everything means at least file and printer sharing).. More choice means to me that a user is able to decide whether to use Windows or Ubuntu or both on a particular box. [Bug 32951] [Dapper] Windows networking broken in Nautilus
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32951 Comment: An unstable version can be subject to some minor issue, that's one due to ubuntu-desktop is taking some days to be update. I agree that's not perfect, but people tracking a working distribution have to accept maintainers are working and it can create some glitches by moment. 1. ubuntu-desktop is here to make things easy for you. You may disagree and come with a better suggestion that would be nice. It might not be ideal, but there is no obvious way to do the same thing in a better way 2. "However, it is recommended that you keep it installed, because it is used to carry out certain upgrade transitions (such as adding new packages to the system)." ... that's exactly what is happening with that case. By not accepting the tradeoff you just say that you don't accept the responsability of your actions for something described to me, that doesn't seems to be so fair. 3. By using a Depends you force people to install it. There is no way for them to uninstall that later. Debian is about choice and flexibilty and they decided to not force people to install samba if they want to. The "Recommands" is the tool for that, those package should be installed by default, which gives the feature to normal users and let the option to power users to remove the package. Here comes your point 5., you are probably right that synaptic should install them by default, that would have make that transition transparent for you without forcing people who do want to use samba to keep it installed 4. As said before that's an unstable distribution, people are working, things are moving, some annoyance happen. We try to keep that a smooth as possible but nobody is perfect. Usually those issues are fixed quite quickly 5. That's a good point. Some cleanup of "Recommends" should probably happen first because some package use for some stuff instead of "Suggests", but that's probably the right way to go Thank you for the interest to the distribution and sorry for the glitch on that -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Public bug reported: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32973 Affects: evolution (Ubuntu) Severity: Normal Priority: (none set) Status: Unconfirmed Description: Following my previous bug report (#32972), I'm creating an appointment which starts at 26-April-2006 and ends at 28-April-2006. Apparently this task cannot be accomplished because after typing in 26/04/2006 on the start date, I shift the focus to the end date field and the most I can type is 28/04/20, when I try to type the remaining 06, as soon as I hit the 0 key the dates are reset to 2002. Sitsofe, That was it. It was me not waiting long enough. While technically not a bug, it is very unusual to see an application window and no data (for like 20-40 seconds). It sure would be great to see some kind of "working" message. I ran the command you gave me and there were no error messages. The response was lots of info and then "Dumped 49 devices..." Re: Your comment to Chip. There is some kind of disconnect between this program and other parts of the OS. [Bug 32951] [Dapper] Windows networking broken in Nautilus
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/32951 Comment: I still believe it is a bug. It just was broken (even with ubuntu- desktop installed). Some months ago, I decided to invest some time in Ubuntu by setting up Ubuntu in my small company environment (four networked PCs), to keep Dapper up to date and to research and report everything as a bug that doesn't work just by behaving quite innocently - using standard installers and the Gnome GUI. My strong belief is that I shouldn't break anything by going this route. Some comments: 1 As a user of those things I don't feel that ubuntu-desktop is the right place to deal with this. nautilus and gnomevfs should make sure that they are working without forcing me to install a package that again forces my to have stuff I might not need. Delocalizing dependencies makes life more miserable. 2. The description of ubuntu-desktop says that I can deinstall if I don't need some desktop packages. It is recommended to keep it for certain upgrade operations. I did deinstall ubuntu-desktzop on one of my two boxes when I was running into trouble with dependencies during some package installations and deinstallations (actually something with totem) when I was trying to get audio to work. I understood that there might be difficulties with upgrades but I was not accepting the tradeoff that important features are breaking without notice. And I guess the typical Ubuntu user will agree with this. 3 The core of my argument basically is that "smb support" is not a (recommended) extra, but a core feature. Quite frankly, I wouldn't have an issue with Webdav moved to extra; this is not a very typical use of networking by typical users. 4 On one of my two Ubuntu boxes, ubuntu-desktop is installed and up to date. Might be that I am bit nitpicking on this, but smb didn't work and the issue has been caused by updating to the latest versioon of libgnomevfs. Probably be the bug will be fixed by a new version of ubuntu-desktop. But until then, it is still a bug. 5 Final point: Synaptic doesn't install recommends by default. And synaptic is the default. [Bug 26117] "Shared folders" not working
Public bug report changed: https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/26117 Comment: We are sometime not happy with some software and bugs, but we ship the best alternative we find to do the job. Knowing that most upstream do that for free out of their job, and than the number of package maintained by people is not that low we are in a position where fixing some bugs takes time, especially if the bug depends on having some special configuration (there is quite some people working under linux and not having a smb configuration between different machines to play with that). Remark like "What a useless app! This has got to be the most unstable set of packages yet." might be true, they don't motivate people working on something for free to continue their work ... I've changed ubuntu-desktop when I've splitted the package but no new version of the package has been uploaded since, that should be enough (it'll be installed by default and for people who have ubuntu-desktop installed, people who removed ubuntu- desktop accept the tradeoff that they may have to install packages by hand on upgrade).
