I have the exact same issue.

I think there may be a permissions problem or some other such issue
but I'm sure that's of no help.

[Bug 157317] Re: Evolution freezes (for half a minute) in regular intervals if laptop is running without the USB keyboard

2007-10-25 Thread Amit Tendulkar
Okay, I seem to have got it.

The issue seems to be with the network settings. If one of the mail/news
servers are not accessible, then evolution windows keep freezing at
regular interval (USB keyboard or not). I will change the bug summary to
reflect this.

** Summary changed:

- Evolution freezes (for half a minute) in regular intervals if laptop is
running without the USB keyboard
+ Evolution freezes (for half a minute) in regular intervals if one of the
mail/news servers are not accessible over the network

That case is about "Help" in gnome-about-me, this is about "Close" in
link-monitor-applet. The "Close" button works in the following
applications fine:

About Me, gcalctool, Terminal, gedit, Workrave, weather applet, deskbar
applet, and power manager.

The "Help" in link-monitor-applet works correctly as does the "Credits"
button on the "About" dialog box.

[Bug 157317] Evolution freezes (for half a minute) in regular intervals if laptop is running without the USB keyboard

2007-10-25 Thread Amit Tendulkar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

This issue has started appearing after I upgraded to Gusty Gibbon
(though it may be occurring less frequently in Feisty Fawn). Whenever I
am operating my (HP) laptop without the USB keyboard plugged in (and
using laptops inbuilt keyboard) then after every minute or so, all the
evolution windows freeze for 20-30 seconds. Though they continue to take
input (e.g. if I am composing an email, the typed text entered during
the frozen interval appears after the windows are unfrozen).

Another interesting thing to note that is only evolution is getting
affected due to this issue.

Here is the output from my uname -a command,
Linux lap432 2.6.20-16-generic #2 SMP Sun Sep 23 19:50:39 UTC 2007 i686
GNU/Linux

NOTE: This may be due to a case when I boot Ubuntu with the USB keyboard
plugged in, then after some time plug out the USB keyboard, put the
system to standby, bring up the system from standby without the USB
keyboard plugged in. After this the evolution starts to give this issue.
Though I still need to confirm whether this is really causing the issue.

[Bug 157312] not showing all image thumbnails when zoomed

2007-10-25 Thread BlueSky
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In a ~/Pictures directory with 300+ jpeg pictures, when using default
zoom level (100%) viewed as icons all thumbnails are showed. Then switch
to 150% OK, but when I zoom to 200%, then only first 100 pics are showed
in thumbnail, other pictures are just tiny box (like 2x2 pixels).
Pictures are arranged by name. When they are arranged by size the same
pictures are still showed like tiny boxes. 400% zoom works fine. List
view also works fine in any zoom.

They were copied from a flash drive (windows comp) and the same
thumbnails are not showed on it either. I have looked at picture
properties and didn't find any pattern, some were created with photoshop
( V7.0 or CS), some with a quick time software...pictures are about
20-900kb in size. I'm not experiencing any problem with other software
(gThumb, Gimp...).

Temp solution: moved all pictures in other directory, but there are
still that are not showing. Moved yet another time in other directory
and all pictures had its thumnails.

Also, I'm not sure if I should file a separate bug report, but left clicking on

gnome-control-center1:2.20.1-0ubuntu1
Bug is partially fixed

Scenario 1:
a. Select theme
b. Change pointer
c. Change border
d. Save As
-> OK: Correct pointer saved

Scenario 2: (b <-> c)
a. Select theme
b. Change border
c. Change pointer
d. Save As
-> Bug: pointer not saved

Scenario 3:
a. Select theme
b. Change pointer
-> Bug: Button [Save As] disabled, can't save
Themes cannot be saved if they differ only in pointer.

There also seems to be a problem with pointers with variable size.
Either the size is not saved properly or not loaded properly at theme change,
but i can't say how to reproduce.

[Bug 157281] no option to play audio attachment

2007-10-25 Thread Reece
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I frequently receive .wav files as mime attachments. Evolution
recognizes them as audio/microsoft-wav, but doesn't offer to play them.
Nautilus plays them fine.

I would have expected that evolution and nautilus used the same mime
type application configuration. So, the unexpected behavior here is not
the inability to play this audio file, but rather the apparent
incongruity of evolution and nautilus file handling.

My guess is that this occurs because evo is using the mime type and
nautilus is using the suffix. I have no doubt that I can configure this
somewhere, but my brief attempts to modify my .mailcap and .gnome
/application-info/user.applications didn't work.

Thanks,
Reece

2007-10-25 Thread Dave L
I've encountered this problem also. I noticed that after evolution had
been open for a while, it would slow down.

A quick look at System Monitor explained why. evolution-exchange-storage
memory just kept climbing. It just kept going up and up. Eventually it
got over 100 meg and I had to kill the process.

Exchange e-mail account is the only mail account set up. I do have one
public folder subscribed, a contacts folder.

[Bug 157276] IM contact synchronization

2007-10-25 Thread phirestalker
Public bug reported:

when I set evolution to synchronize contacts it just creates new
contacts with the email as the name for MSN contacts. I have them in my
contact list already in evolution and have the MSN field filled out with
their MSN email, but it still creates a new contact. It should first
check if the MSN or yahoo name already exist in one of the contacts and
then synchronize the phone number and address but NOT the name that they
put in their IM profile, oh and their birthday should be added if not
filled in on the evolution contact.

[Bug 97251] Re: screen turns off after 20 minutes even when playing in fullscreen

2007-10-25 Thread bwallum
It's back!

Compiz set to 'none'. Fully updated 7.10. Screensaver set to 1 minute
(I'm testing) with random visual.

Playing dvd with latest VLC player. 'Disable Screensaver' check box

After 10 minutes (exactly - measured) the screen goes blank. Can be
repeated at every attempt.

The good news is I can turn Compiz 'Visual Effects' to 'Extra' and get
the same effect.

[Bug 154504] Re: Gnome-panel hangs and allocates all possible ram.

2007-10-25 Thread Andrew Perry
I tried removing the Deskbar applet and Workrave ... those didn't help.
I'm running with the clock applet removed now too, I'll report how it
goes. I've noticed that the memory-blowout & hang only seems to happen
when I'm actually using the machine ... ie if I leave it logged in all
day while I'm not using the desktop, I come back and gnome-panel is
still responsive with sensible memory usage. I think its something I'm
doing while actively using the UI which seems to trigger this bug.

[Bug 157262] not downloading html to added addressbook

2007-10-25 Thread Derekh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Add a new address book. Lets say I call it "news list"
Enable HTML download for users in your contacts.
I subscribe to newsletters which are formatted in HTML. So I add these address
to the newly created address book.
For example add: DPChallenge <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> to my news list address book.
It doesn't automatically load the html, even though the contact is in my news
list address book
If i put the email into the Personal address book. It DOES load the HTML.

[Bug 157261] Nautilus browser-mode location bar segments should be drag and drop targets

2007-10-25 Thread Zin Slan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When I am several levels into a deep folder hierarchy, I often want to
move a file in the current folder "up" about three or four levels.

For instance, if I'm in /home/user/foo/bar/baz/bif/happy, I might want
to move a file to /home/user/foo.

My first thought was to drag the file to the Location Bar segment
labeled "foo". This didn't work.

My only alternative was to copy the file, click the "foo" segment, then
paste the file into its new location.

That's three steps where only one was necessary.

[Bug 150373] Re: creating a 7zip gives error in Gutsy Beta

2007-10-25 Thread CKX
Okay, I have finally managed to create a test case.

The attached 7z-archive contains a folder called "files" with three sub-
folders called "folder-1", "folder-2" and "folder-3". Each of those
folders contain 1500 short text files. That is a total of 4500 text
files.

To produce the mentioned message box, please make sure that either
"p7zip" or "p7zip-full" is installed. Then, download the attached 7z-
archive to any folder, e.g. the desktop, and uncompress it using the
context-menu and the respective "extract here" menu item. This will
result in the folder "files" to be created on the desktop.

Next, use the context-menu and the respective "create archive" menu item
on that folder to compress it again. Choose a different name and ".7z"
for the archive's type. The expected but irritating message box should
appear after archive creation.

[Bug 22007] Re: no 'Settings' button in gnome-screensaver

2007-10-25 Thread xfx
Ok, version 0.2.1 is now ready and it supports the ability to choose
which screensavers you want to use while in Random mode.

I have, however, found a terrible problem:
As you may already know, in order to be able to adjust the screensavers'
settings you need to gksudo the application. But, doing so will cause the
changes made to the made window (that is, select the default screen saver, set
the activation delay, etc...) to be applied to the root account.

I will need to investigate a little further and see how we can run the
program without sudoing it and then be able to gain enough privileges to
alter the screensavers' settings.

Re: [Bug 156765] Re: GIMP 2.4's new print dialog is disabled

2007-10-25 Thread Philipp Sadleder
Sebastien, that's all fine, this was just a proposal as I found the new
dialog an improvement in the unified desktop printing experience.

But well, it's not difficult to take the plugin from a corresponding
Debian package (/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/print) and put it in that
place on an Ubuntu installation (or to ~/.gimp-2.4/plug-ins).

[Bug 157223] fuzyy screen on high resolution in gutsy

2007-10-25 Thread iNFiNiTE
Public bug reported:

i just finished upgrading all my computers to gutsy
they all work fine, HP laptop, 2 Mac Minis, 2 Desktops except for my work
computer

I have a wide screen ViewSonic VX2035wm that supports up to 1680x1050 resolution
it used to be working just fine on feisty, but after the upgrade it all looks
blurry now ...

lower resolutions look fine, it's only this one that's broken, i suspect
it has something to do with the refresh rate (obviously! no?)

I did my homework, searched for similar bugs or forum posts, however all
talk about high resolution resulting in a flickering screen, which is
NOT what i'm getting, i can see everything on my screen, but it's all
blurry ...

i messed around with all the possible screen settings with no hope, then
i played around with xorg.conf with no hope either ...

here's what i tried:
- setting custom HorzSync, VertRefresh values based on the manufacturer's specs
- using a custom Modline
- using a custom Modline with different refresh rates
- using ati's binary driver

none worked ... any ideas ?

here's the forum post related to this with a copy of my xorg.conf file:

[Bug 156765] Re: GIMP 2.4's new print dialog is disabled

2007-10-25 Thread Sebastien Bacher
You seem to imply that the current print dialog doesn't work, reading
the gimp bugs doesn't indicate that's true. We will consider the new
dialog but that's not a security issue nor a frequent user demand so it
might take some time though. About new versions there is the backport
project working on making those available to stable users. Note that
you can't ask for the crack of the day versions and expect stability, if
you want the current code you can run the unstable version of the
distribution

[Bug 157207] evolution-data-server keeps replicating my contacts in addressbook.db when syncing with Pidgin

2007-10-25 Thread Зоран Рилак
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-data-server

When the option to synchronize with Pidgin contact list is on,
evolution-data-server keeps adding them periodically, disregarding the
fact that all of my contacts already are in the address book. This
leads to my addressbook.db being > 70MB and growing, high CPU/disk
usage, Evolution becomes unresponsive (regardless of what I am doing at
that time -- reading e-mail, composing, configuring etc.). I've traced
the bug by attaching (strace -p) to a running evolution-data-
server-1.12. I can provide more data if necessary, but I think this
will suffice for now. Please ask for additional logs as you deem
appropriate.

[Bug 96676] Re: [feisty] function keys don't work in gnome-terminal

2007-10-25 Thread Alexey Borzenkov
> I don't use mc, but have read that it stores key-definitions per $TERM
> with its learn-keys feature. That may be what's confusing it.

God, you are right!! I was looking at config in my home directory and
was already going to say that it's not like that, when an idea striked
me that maybe there's some system-wide config. And yet is it,
/etc/mc/mc.lib:

...
[terminal:xterm]
...
# Sequences below are for Konsole, which also sets TERM=xterm
kf11=\eO2P
kf12=\eO2Q
kf13=\eO2R
kf14=\eO2S
...

So that's why I'm seeing it working in an unexpected way when terminfo
entries are correct! So for anyone interested, there are two choices:

1) recompile vte with this change reverted:
http://svn.gnome.org/viewcvs/vte/trunk/src/keymap.c?r1=1341&r2=1391
2) create myxterm.ti like I displayed below (or grab full terminfo.src at
invisible-island.net, mentioned earlier by Thomas), compile it with tic, then
add appropriate entries to /etc/mc/mc.lib, using \e[1;2P...\e[1;2S for xterm
and \eO1;2P...\eO1;2S for gnome-terminal (you can specify both). Sadly, if I'm
not missing something, only one of these notations (xterm or gnome-terminal)
can be specified in myxterm.ti file (infocmp and ncurses seem to use only one
of them).

The problem with solution 1 is that xterm will still stay misunderstood
on your system (though I'm not using xterm, thus I'm personally going
with number 1 at the moment, to retain compatibility with konsole).

The problem with solution 2 is that xterm, gnome-terminal and konsole
are all three mutually incompatible in this regard. You can make mc
understand all three, but it's not going to be universal and might not
work with other programs. :-/ Now, to me it seems that current vte
behavior is a bug and should match xterm. And most of all konsole should
do that too, or stop pretending to be xterm!

Below is an example of my final myxterm.ti:

xterm-kfpc-13-16-xterm|kf13..kf16 for xterm,
kf13=\E[1;2P,
kf14=\E[1;2Q,
kf15=\E[1;2R,
kf16=\E[1;2S,

xterm-kfpc-13-16-gterm|kf13..kf16 for gnome-terminal,
kf13=\EO1;2P,
kf14=\EO1;2Q,
kf15=\EO1;2R,
kf16=\EO1;2S,

xterm|X11 terminal emulator with correct kf-sequences,
use=xterm-kfpc-13-16-xterm,
use=xterm-debian,

Here you can choose between xterm and gnome-terminal in the use
statement. Further comments are welcome, and I hope this will help
workaround the problem for others too.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 23768 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/23768

If I understand the situation correctly, there are actually two bugs
here:

1. CPU frequency selection requires root or suid privileges (this is bug
#23768)

2. The documentation fails to mention that the menu will not be
available in this situation.

Should there be an independent bug report for the second issue, or could
the current bug be split away from #23768, which it is currently marked
as a duplicate of?

Here's a bug report at debian, and a mailing list message from gimp-
user.

Looks like it's related to the ati video drivers; both I and the
reporter have the same video card: an ATI Radeon 7000 / VE / RV100.

[Bug 157189] Audio preview function causes a memory leak

2007-10-25 Thread Schpariel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

System:

Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon x86 (clean install)
2.6.22-14-generic
gutsy-proposed repository is enabled.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Start a new, clean GNOME session (don't open anything yet), activate
audio previews in nautilus (which is the default setting). Don't install
any packages related to audio previews.

2) Get the number of open file handles with "ls /proc/`pgrep
nautilus`/fd | wc -w"

3) Use the audio preview function (even though it won't work because you
don't have the needed packages) - just hover your mouse over a few mp3s.

4) Watch the number of open files increase.

5) When the number of handles reaches 1024 (which is the maximum number
of open files per process), nautilus won't open any files, it just drops
the following in ~/.xsession-errors

(nautilus:): Eel-WARNING **: Error starting command 'gnome-
app-install --mime-type='application/octet-stream' : Weiterleitung für Kommunikation mit Kindprozess (Too many open
files) konnte nicht erzeugt werden

Unable to create TCP socket
Unable to create TCP socket

(nautilus:7899): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon 'gtk-cancel'
for stock: Datei »/usr/share/icons/Human/scalable/actions/gtk-
cancel.svg« konnte nicht geöffnet werden: Too many open files

I know that audio previews require mpg321 and vorbis-tools to be
installed, but this a problem because audio previews are enabled by
default, and the required packages aren't installed. IMO Audio previews
should be disabled by default until this issue is resolved.

[Bug 150471] Re: [Gutsy] high processor activity after logging out and then logging in again

2007-10-25 Thread James N
Yes, it is still a bug. The login/logout is not the only case that is
affected by this problem - when I am logged in as myself and I run a
nautilus window as root, it does not exit normally. I have to kill the
process manually after closing the nautilus window.

I don't know anything about the way Nautilus is coded, but the 2 cases
where this problem occurs suggest to me that nautilus expects some
service to be running as it is exiting, and if that service isn't
running - the process hangs and eats up all the CPU.

[Bug 20032] Re: Shuffle mode needs to be refined

2007-10-25 Thread Trouilliez vincent
> It should be more like "never play the same song twice during one
session, unless every song has already been played".

Wow, please don't do that ! That would be horrible, at least for me ! :-(
I mean, I don't like all my songs equally... so there are songs that I don't
even want to hear, and others that I like a lot, which I really don't mind if I
hear them several times per evening. I just don't want to hear the same song
litterally twice in a row, or 3 times in 10 songs, because that really is "too
much". But I have nearly 600 songs in my library, and if I have to go through
600 songs before I have a chance to hear again a song I like, I will suicide !
;-/

That's why I proposed to wait only a few songs, be it 10 or 20 or whatever,
this way it garantees that I won't hear the same song twice in a row, yet I
won't have to wait 3 months before I can enjoy it again. There is a balance to
be found somewhere between 0 and 600 ;-)
Maybe RB could be adaptative, and determine this threshold automatically, to
find an appropriate value based on the number of songs.

That's why I proposed to have the option to use it available. With a
separate binary package, people have the option to use it if they want
it. Otherwise they have to use third party repositories.
Another option would be to build a package for universe.

For me, gimp-gutenprint didn't work ever, so I'm very happy to have a
working gtk+ print plugin on my Debian machine. But some Ubuntu users I
know are eager to have a working print plugin.

is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper

[Bug 156765] Re: GIMP 2.4's new print dialog is disabled

2007-10-25 Thread David Benjamin
Could it then be at least in backports for those of us who'd like a more
functional GIMP and don't want to wait for Hardy?

I could compile it myself, sure, but it'd be nice for it to integrate
nicely into the package manager. And Linux is hardly attractive to the
Windows crowd if they have to compile from source or {update, wait for
the next version of} their distro just to get a feature that's supposed
to be _in the current release_ much less a new version.

I don't understand why most users should have to wait that long. It
shouldn't take much to test the code. There's very little of it, and a
lot is the same as every other app that uses the GtkPrint API. I'd be
several security upgrades that do get pushed have a larger quantity of
"untested" code. Like Firefox revisions.

And this doesn't even replace any code that may have worked before.
Gutenprint seems to be happy to co-exist with the new plugin, so people
can always just use the old plugin.

What does it take to test the print plugin and have it be deemed worthy
of getting into Gutsy? I'd be happy to help test it if no one else will.

( Perhaps it's worth slightly rethinking the upgrade policy? Several people
I've suggested Linux to complain that Ubuntu makes it difficult to get new
versions of some program they like to use. In comparison, in Windows one can
just go and install the new version. Whereas I couldn't play with the GIMP 2.4
rc's because the package in Feisty was a bugfix and maintenance version behind.
Would it be sensible/feasible to have something sort of in between the current
stable and grabbing the alphas and betas of the next release? A
repository/release-schedule for those who aren't on systems that must be up
150% of the time and can handle code that's only been tested for a few weeks as
opposed to 6 months if it means we can get reasonably up-to-date packages and
have our packages supported with the upstream bugfixes. )
