Re: [Bug 151986] Re: Instalation of j2re doesn't complete

2007-11-04 Thread Steve Clarke
I have managed to solve it for me. Try this and let me know how you
fare.

Completely uninstall old version that was manually installed.
Open terminal
enter:

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/gutsy.list -O
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

and enter password
Then enter

wget -q http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-
key add - && sudo apt-get update

When finished,
Open Synaptic Package Manager
Click Reload (or click edit, reload package information) and wait for
details to download
Search Package Manager for "Google"
Select "googleearth" and "googleearth-data"
Click "apply"

Google Earth should then install putting an icon in "Applications, Internet"
Enjoy!

Regards,
Steve.

[Bug 61919] Re: sticky notes should stay when user clicks on desktop

2007-11-04 Thread Felipe Figueiredo
You are correct, Dante, it still works as advertised. I get the expected
behaviour after clearing gnome/gconf config dot-files and reconfiguring
from scratch.

I agree it's a desirable wishlist, even though I like it the way it is.
Hope upstream gets it done by the next gnome release.

[Bug 159914] Mines is very slow in full screen mode

2007-11-04 Thread Michaël Van Dorpe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

Gnome-games turns out to be a hit with people who use my computer.
However, they tell me that mines is not very responsive when played in

Since playing games is about breaking records, which is about time,

[Bug 132612] Re: memory leak in evince?

2007-11-04 Thread kripkenstein
I can also confirm this bug on Gutsy.

As with others here, on Feisty Evince was reasonable, but on Gutsy
things are out of control. I simply cannot use Evince (I am using xpdf
for now). One example is a 2.6MB PDF (I can post it here if it can
help), that when opened in Evince causes 300+ MB of resident memory to
be used (and I can actually see the memory taken up and swap space being
utilized - this isn't a misreading of memory usage due to
caching/buffers). After initial load, memory usage goes down to 200 MB,
but jumps back up to 300MB+ (and 100% CPU) as I scroll.

On my 512 MB system, this behavior basically sends everything else into
swap, and the system is nearly unusable. Note that even the 200MB that
it 'stabilizes' on when not scrolling is bad enough.

If you use Bottom panel only and using Deskbar, the Deskbar search
does not stay locked to bottom panel.

ie, If I open Deskbar from panel. It stays next to panel. I search for
something it expands towards top of screen. If I close Deskbar, and
reopen deskbar to search again, Deskbar window is at the top or middle
of screen.

[Bug 126825] Re: external Seagate FreeAgent disk doesn't auto mount

2007-11-04 Thread unggnu
A possible workaround could be an fstab entry with the UUID of the
Freeagent partition. You can get the UUID with 'sudo vol_id /dev/sdX1' .

/etc/fstab entry:
UUID=LONG_NUMBER  /media/MOUNTPOINT  FILESYSTEM  user,defaults  0 0

The user-Option is needed to be able to mount the Freeagent hard disk without
root permissions.
If you don't want to use the Terminal every time you can write a little Script
which un/mounts the hard disk and add this to your Panel or desktop.

#!/bin/bash
if `mount | grep -q /media/MOUNTPOINT`
then
umount /media/MOUNTPOINT
else
mount /media/MOUNTPOINT

Actually, I am slowly in the process of orphaning lsongs and all its
dependencies. I am willing to fix all outstanding bugs first though.

normal, when I start evolution.

[Bug 151986] Re: Instalation of j2re doesn't complete

2007-11-04 Thread cfwelc
Thanks, Steve,

My problem with j2re was already solved. How? I don't know. it simply ran.
But with Google Earth, I had problems when tried to run it on Ubuntu 7.04.
I got to install the program, but I think it had problem with my (poor)
hardware.
However, using Ubuntu 7.10 I've got to install and run Google Earth.

But for me, the latest release of Ubuntu wasn't good.
It has a lot problems, kind of a 'Reload' on the 'Add/Remove' that always
appear when I try to install codecs (because it's not brought installed). Ok, I
have to be updated, but the 'Reload' simply don't let me install nothing! It
ALWAYS appears.
And my internet connection? My settings goes out when I restart!

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-11-04 Thread Christoffer Sørensen
@Sebastian:

I consider Arch fast since it takes 20 seconds to load Gnome using that.
It takes 37 seconds using Ubuntu, so something is slowing Ubuntu down.

No, I'm not using deskbar, it is simply too slow to load.

Also, it does not make sense to compare your load times with mine, since
I'm using an old laptop.

I'm wondering why the importance is set to Low, when this affects a lot
users everyday.

[Bug 75375] Re: [time-admin] clock applet context menu doesn't allow "Adjust Date & Time"

2007-11-04 Thread wutzin
still NOT fixed - I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 with all updates as of today
and am still unable to set the time:

When I right-click on the time applet in my panel and choose "adjust date +
time", I enter my root pw and are presented with the time dialog. I want to set
the time one hour in advance - I click on the up arrow next to the hour and to
increase the hour by one - but after about 1-2 seconds, the hour jumps back to
what it was!
I have set the synchronize option to "manual" - plus when I try setting it to
"keep synchronized with internet servers" I get an error that ntp is not
installed - so the problem can't be that it is a ntp server changing the time.

This is really annoying - I ran into the "sudo timestamp too far in the
future" bug after my Ubuntu switched to winter time (hmm, how did that
happen if ntp isn't installed???) - so I can't issue any sudo commands
in the terminal until I change the time. So I thought I'd just change
the time with the "adjust date and time" applet to regain sudo access,
but this doesn't work either.

Either gksudo is also affected by the root timestamp issue but won't
tell me (but then the applet should fail to load, right?) and that's the
reason why it won't update the time, OR there is something else buggy.

I fixed the sudo timestamp issue - but when I call sudo time-admin, I am
still unable to adjust the time. When I try to set the clock, it takes a
second, then it jumps back to the old value and gives the following
error:

Re: [Bug 122602] Re: Duplicated entries in Places Menu

2007-11-04 Thread Dylan McCall
In terms of the problem being painted over with reasonable success such that
the problem being unearthed may be blamed on the user instead of erroneous
system design, it is solved. However, I request that another bug or
blueprint, destined for Hardy, be opened that explains the problem of these
disagreeing Places menus.

Try this: Create a bookmark to every location that is missing in every
Places list in Ubuntu. (That is Nautilus, the file opener widget and
gnome-panel). Count the duplicates in each menu. The other problem this
causes is a more simple case of accessibility. The user should be able to
anticipate the contents of the Places menus to be all identical, just as he
can expect every window to have a Close button. After all, those menus all
show the same bookmarks and have the same title! However, for everything
that is not a bookmark, this is certainly not the case...

We have a perfectly good global bookmarks system; let's use it for the more
rigid places as well. (Perhaps the bookmarks that aren't usually edited
could placed in /etc, which is a globally accessible application).

[Bug 153383] Re: Error activating XKB configuration, directly after login. Ubuntu 7.10

2007-11-04 Thread Joakim Malmdin
I get the same message as Finn 2007-10-16. I run Gutsy on a Dell
Dimension 5150, Intel Pentium 4:

# xprop -root | grep XKB
_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = "xorg", "pc105", "pc105", "", ""
_XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = "xorg", "pc105", "pc105", "", ""
# gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
 layouts = [pc105,se]
 model =
 options = [lv3 lv3:ralt_switch,grp grp:alts_toggle]
 overrideSettings = true

I have to reconfigure the keyboard via KDE Control Module every time I
log in (the Gnome panel option does not work).

[Bug 157780] Re: gnome-session-save scew up session file

2007-11-04 Thread Frodon
Ok here some more informations.

I discovered some strange behaviour about gnome-session-save. YOu can
see in the gutsy generated session file that xfwm4 is set as default
manager with no reason. However for an odd reason the desktop > gnome >
application > window_manager > current Gcong key was set to
/usr/bin/xfwm4 which could explain the error.

Anyway this clearly demonstrate that the gnome-session-save command is
not looking for the WM your are using but is looking to the Gconf key
which like i shown can be wrong.

Please try to reproduce this on your computer, set the desktop > gnome >
application > window_manager > current Gconf key to something else than your
current WM and check that gnome-session-save will take in consideration your
Gconf key and not your current WM.
Then change your WM and check that the Gconf key (like i guess) is not updated.

I'm pretty sure to have located the problem now, thanks to anyone who
can confirm this.

[Bug 147298] Re: AD198x Analog: microphone misconfigured

2007-11-04 Thread Simos Xenitellis
Audio works on my system (hda-intel, gutsy). However, when trying the
sound capture test from the Sound preferences in Ubuntu, I get the

Failed to construct test pipeline for 'gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert !
audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat'

error. However, even when I get the error dialog, the sound capture test
actually works.

When I run the test manually with gst-launch as Pavel showed, the sound
capture test works without any working.

Therefore, the error message "Failed to construct test pipeline..."
should probably not be taken at face value to figure out if sound
capture works or not.

My suggestion is that if "aplay -l" shows that Alsa has found your HDA
Intel device, then tinker with the volume control settings. There are
many settings with somewhat random initial values.

[Bug 160047] evolution 'local delivery' mode fails to work

2007-11-04 Thread Trond Myklebust
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

On an Ubuntu Gutsy default install. With evolution-2.12.1-0ubuntu1, and
evolution-data-server-1.12.1-0ubuntu1, set up an email account using
'local delivery', selecting the default /var/mail as your path (note
that you cannot select /var/mail/$USER, and that doing so was not
necessary in older versions of evolution).

When done, press the 'send/receive' button.

Result will be 'Error while Fetching Mail. Could not open mail file
/var/mail: Is a directory'.

Furthermore, you will see that you can select the 'account' you created in the
side bar. Selecting the account, and going to the '$USER' folder results in an
error 'cannot create lock file for /var/mail/$USER: Permission denied'.
Changing the permissions on /var/mail to 2777 'fixes' the problem, but results
in evolution creating the files $USER.cmeta, $USER..ev-summary and
$USER.ev-summary-meta. If you click on the trash or junk files, then new files
.#evolution.sbd/Junk.cmeta and .#evolution.sbd/Trash.cmeta will be created.

In other words, the new version of evolution does not appear to be
'retrieving local mail from standard mbox-formatted spools into folders
managed by Evolution'. Rather it appears to be attempting to convert the
spools into Evolution folders.

[Bug 159940] Re: Leave message does not like "<"

2007-11-04 Thread Steven "Kreuvf" Koenig
It does not have to do much with gnome-screensaver as further testing
showed. E. g. x-chat popups containing "<" behave the same way: Popup
appears, but empty.

Re: [Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2007-11-04 Thread Kyle Weller
I agree, the importance on allot of bugs are not appropriate and do not get
enough attention as they should, there is bugs that have not ever been fixed
in Ubuntu when other distro's fixed the issues a long time ago...

this problem is still present in some form.
Will post a screenshot shortly.

[Bug 160082] nautilus fails without warning to copy/move files if the containing directory is renamed

2007-11-04 Thread Rocko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

1. Create a folder 'test'. Initialise it by copying several files into it.
(They should ideally be large files, eg 100 MB or more, or the operation occurs
too quickly to observe the problem.)

2. Select the files in the folder and choose copy and then paste.

3. While the copy operation is in progress, renamed the containing
folder 'test' to 'test1'.

4. The file currently being copied completes, and then the 'Copying...'
window disappears. There is no indication that the other files failed to
copy.

This also occurs during a move operation, ie between different physical
drives because otherwise the move operation is too fast for you to
rename the containing folder. In this case, none of the original files
are removed at step 4 even though some of them may be 'moved'.

Although no data loss is involved, there should really be an indication
to the user that the operation failed. At the moment it seems as though
everything has completed successfully.

I reproduced this in the latest Ubuntu 7.10, using nautilus version
1:2.20.0-0ubuntu7.

 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 12154] Re: Nautilus should have a superuser mode

2007-11-04 Thread Wladston Viana
Dirk,

As long as the feature get's implemented, it's alright.

But I think that it's nice to at least say a simple phrase about what is
going on and why the hell that password box showed up most newbies
won't know why they have to type in a password, and might even think
it's a virus or something

[Bug 8422] Re: Error message on ending VNC session

2007-11-04 Thread dAniel hAhler
Upstream fixed it for the next version (probably 0.150).
The patch can be found at:

In Gutsy we now have 0.148-3ubuntu1, which should still have this error.

[Bug 67188] Re: "Error activating XKB configuration." - Requires manual xorg.conf editing

2007-11-04 Thread jlinkels
I tried every solution given in the entire internet for the bug -- none worked.
Until I edited xorg.conf directly to reflect the real situation I had:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Generic Keyboard"
Driver "kbd"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
Option "XkbLayout" "us_intl"
EndSection

No idea why...
