[Bug 251809] Re: scrollbar has some problem with multiple tabs

2008-11-17 Thread jdeslip
Is it possible that this is a result of upgrading instead of doing a
fresh install? Is there some setting to reset to fix this? I find it
hard to believe that this bug is getting so little attention if it is
not because it pretty much makes the tabs in nautilus useless.

[Bug 299245] [NEW] Evolution: delete trash with IMAP crashes

2008-11-17 Thread Stefan Foerster
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I use a mail server (dovecot) in my home network (running on my Linksys
NSLU2). I use 'evolution' as mail client on all of my machines. The
mailbox is IMAP format.

On one of my notebooks I have recently upgraded from hardy heron to
intrepid ibex, i.e. evolution version 2.24.1.1.

Whenever I select Datei/Müll leeren (file/empty trash), evolution
instantly crashes without any messages. The e-mails in the trash folder
don't get deleted, they survive this operation. In my preferences I have
the option delete trash on exit checked. This also doesn't work -
today I have realised that in total 1,599 e-mails had not been deleted
after the upgrade to intrepid ibex.

On my wife's notebook, running hardy heron and evolution 2.22.3.1,
deleting e-mails from the trash works as expected. The e-mails are in
fact gone after this operation, even when I open the trash folder on my
notebook with the 2.24.1.1 version of evolution.

This bug is reproducible. It was introduced in version 2.24.

[Bug 299248] [NEW] Huge performance problem since update

2008-11-17 Thread Lionel Dricot
Public bug reported:

I was using the rhythmbox of Intrepid (with the fadeout lock bug).

Yesterday, I've upgraded to 0.11.6svn20081008-0ubuntu4.2 from intrepid-
update.

Since then, Rhythmbox and pulseaudio are using together approximately
15% of the CPU. (+/- 10% for RB and 5% for pulseaudio). It was
definitely not the case before the update.

More : each time I do something on my computer (like changing tabs in
my browser, opening a new window or a new gnome-terminal), the sound
will become jerky and even stop for half a second.

Note: I've disabled the fadeout/fadein plugin. I've not tested with the
plugin enabled.

[Bug 298526] Re: evolution segfaults on emptying imap-trash

2008-11-17 Thread Gert Kulyk
Seems like something is wrong with the commit to camel/providers/imap
/camel-imap-folder.c which was meant to resolve gnome-bug #558883. After
reverting the mentioned file to revision 9736 in the stable
gnome-2-24-branch and recompiling e-d-s the thrashcan is emptied and
evolution does no longer crash. Any idea what went wrong there?

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch
nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click

If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using

_my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm

[Bug 108623] Re: totem isn't buffering correctly

2008-11-17 Thread Dylan McCall
I also encounter frequent network buffer loss in Totem. There are some
interesting numbers to be found with the system monitor's Network graph.
If I pause playback (so that the buffer can catch up!), download appears
to cease entirely. It may be a related issue; most applications buffer
more aggressively, while Totem seems almost ignorant of the need.

The issue has been recently observed with the streams on this page:
http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/startrek/

For me, though, it truly happens Everywhere! My Internet connection is
reasonably stable so Totem should be able to predict how much it must
download, but it does not.

Marking bug as confirmed, because this makes at least three people
reporting similar issues, and I have had the same issue myself on a
number of different computers. If any information is needed, please
advise.

[Bug 296075] Re: Gnome-Power-Manager hangs during general use

2008-11-17 Thread Mark Baran
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

In the latest Ubuntu release, Intrepid Ibex, the Gnome Power Manager has
a tedency to hang for a very long time when it enters the function
do_nanosleep (as reported by Intel Powertop), showing generally
unstable behavior. Moreover, gnome-power-manager also hangs when a
battery is plugged in or out. Ironically, Powertop also notes that
gnome-power-manager is the leading cause of battery life reducing
interrupts when gnome-power-manager hangs itself. Solving the hang may
therefore also help my battery life.

Researching the problem on the internet, it seems this bug may be in the
kernel, fixed by a patch to ACPI EC subsystem. This thread seems to
indicate that these timer problems were solved in the latest kernel
  iteration.

My laptop is the same model, an Acer Aspire One. Perhaps the ACPI EC
patch could be backported to the current Ibex kernel.

Gnome-Do, which also seems to sometimes enter do_nanosleep has a similar
hanging problem, so that also might be related.

I am using the latest Ubuntu release, Intrepid Ibex, with all the latest
  updates installed.
+
+ UPDATE: It turns out that disabling display dimming seems to fix these
+ problems. Even though the display is now set not to dim, it dims
+ anyway, but at least the Power Manager no longer freezes.

[Bug 258081] Re: Can't add new wallpapers using gnome interface and Images (like jpeg) are not detected as it.

2008-11-17 Thread klatham
Can I pick this up where jdamian.b left off?

I have *exactly* the same symptoms (and apt-cache output)

.xsession-errors reports nothing while browsing for background files (if that's
what you meant).
However, I do get one error (and only one, from nautilus) when using the
standard browser interface.

** (nautilus:8269): WARNING **: Unable to add monitor: Not supported

Any ideas where to go from here?

As far as reproducing the problem ... I have no idea what I did to
start it. I only discovered that I could not change backgrounds, no
matter what I do (copied files into /usr/share/backgrounds, change
permissionowner, etc.). I'm reduced to attempting to change the
background definition XML file to see if I can get it change that way
(not complete as of writing).

Symptoms are that:
(1) only 22 of 41 files in my /usr/share/backgrounds directory even show up in
the standard change dialog.
(2) I browse to any directory I like, and no files show up as images.
(3) Only by selecting All files can I see anything in the background location
browser (then I do see everything!)
(4) Selecting any file does nothing, as far as I can tell. It doesn't add. It
doesn't become my background.

Signed,
A willing guinea pig (aka Ken)

Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and all updates as of 11/17/2008 (2.6.24-21-generic)

P.S. Yet to try: (A) another user, (B) changing the XML file to a new
path (.jpg file)

[Bug 299277] Re: when i try the update it says error

2008-11-17 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 275046] Re: gnome-sound-recorder does not capture sound properly (static click sounds)

2008-11-17 Thread komputes
Leann, I can see that the bug for gnome-media has been marked as invalid
and this has been reassigned to the alsa-lib package. I'm not sure how
that conclusion was reached. If you don't mind me asking, what is the
technical reasoning behind this reassignment?

As far as I can see, if the alsa does not work well with the microphone,
I would not be able to record in audacity or make skype calls, yet I am
able to do these things. As well, I am hesitant to say that this issue
is related to specific hardware as I have seen the same issue on
multiple machines with different sound cards. The only think that
remains true to all of the computers with this issue is that gnome-
sound-recorder is the only application affected.

[Bug 299294] [NEW] Totem won't play properly after hibernate

2008-11-17 Thread Essence
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I'm using Ubuntu 8.10 and I use my laptop (Dell Inspiron 6400) during my
commute to watch videos using Totem. Ubuntu 8.10 is the first release
for me to allow proper suspend / hibernate strait off install, however I
notice that if I do not finish watching a video, and thus pause it and
hibernate my laptop, that upon resuming operation totem will not play
properly. By this I mean that the video I left paused, is still open and
at the correct position in the file, however, when I click play it
jitters and plays extremely slowly in such a way it looks as though I am
pressing the play and pause button really quickly. If I close totem and
re-open the file then playback is as expected. This is not the file, as
it will play perfectly fine strait though as long as I do not hibernate
and resume.

The version of totem is 2.24.3-0ubuntu1

[Bug 298753] Re: evolution crashed when Calendar button was clicked.

2008-11-17 Thread Winnewbie
Hi

I'm a five day old user of Ubuntu 8.10. I've just recently activated
Evolution. Late in the day today, I simply clicked on the Calendar icon
which subsequently crashed Evolution. Repeated attempts to access
Evolution's calendar produces the same results.

I've read Sebastian's comments. I remain unsure how to enable apport.
I did launch nautilus but found no files in the /var/crash directory.

Please advise if there is a fix or how else I can help. I would like to
be able to use Evolution's calendar feature. Thanks

[Bug 258081] Re: Can't add new wallpapers using gnome interface and Images (like jpeg) are not detected as it.

2008-11-17 Thread klatham
Hmmm

I can:
(1) change the desktop background, to a brand new file, manually by editing
.gconf/desktop/gnome/background/%gconf.xml
(2) change the background to a new file in another login using
gnome-appearance-properties.

I can't see any difference in the file permissions between the two
login's .gconf directories or any (pertinent) paths beneath it. So,
there is some other difference ...

[Bug 297993] Re: Cannot clear the ~/Private/.Trash-xxxx

2008-11-17 Thread A. Walton
The GVFS portion is reported here already as launchpad bug 106621. It
seems to be a problem in the gvfsd-trash backend, with us sometimes not
catching new volumes being mounted and thusly monitoring the new trash
locations on the new volumes and merging in the trashed files.

Need to ping Ryan Lortie (desrt) and see what the status of his trash
backend rewrite is, which will hopefully not have this problem.

[Bug 299332] [NEW] Screen crash when installing KDE desktop in GNOME at ThinkPad T41

I'm using IBM ThinkPad T41 and installed Ubuntu 8.04 (upgraded kernel to

[Bug 241973] Re: Use oga (Ogg Vorbis, audio) as the default extension extension for adding music to collection

2008-11-17 Thread Michael Ellerman
This is _totally_ broken. I have hardware that knows about .ogg but not
.oga, so now when I rip songs with Linux they don't work on my music
player. I am cluey enough to know that I have to rename them, but most
people won't be - and will just assume that Linux doesn't work.

[Bug 299340] [NEW] Evnice is missing keyboard shortcuts to navigate between form fields

2008-11-17 Thread trjonescp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

There is no easy way to navigate between form fields in a PDF document.
This can be particularly frustrating with forms that have a separate
text entry for each individual character. I think [Tab] makes the most
sense. The current behavior of [Tab] is not very useful at all.

If Evince could detect single character form fields and automatically
advance to the next field (a-la Adobe Reader) that would be ideal.

Using Ubuntu 8.10, Evince 2.24.1

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.10

[Bug 290591] Re: Eject icon is bigger than line height in Nautilus or other icons

2008-11-17 Thread A. Walton
This is probably a theme bug. I don't see that here with my icon theme,
and we clearly set the icon size to GTK_ICON_SIZE_MENU in the places
sidebar (which should be, under normal circumstances, 16x16).

[Bug 290506] Re: cheese malfunctioning with UVCVIDEO webcams (was cheese doesn't show v4l2 video output and disables output on gstreamer-based apps ran afterwards)

2008-11-17 Thread Balaji
Stefan,

I had a similar problem with cheese and I was unable to record video
although my webcam takes photos and also works with Skype flawlessly. So
when I wrote to Filippo and Daniel Seigel (Cheese developers) they
directed me to this bug report.

I installed the following packages: linux-image-2.6.27-8, kernel-image-2.6.27-8
and kernel-image-2.6.27-8-generic. When I boot up with the new kernel, I
immediately have a kernel panic. If you can tell me how I can save the output
on the screen anywhere I'll do that, but from what I see, the CAPS lock simply
blinks repeatedly and nothing works. Not even Ctrl-Alt-Del. I am forced to only
power off the system. It says something like couldn't mount the file system.
So I tried to install fs-core-modules-2.6.27-8-generic. This does not install
complaining that it cannot overwrite the kernel object file and hence crashes.
If I try to report the crash, crash reporter says that It is not a genuine
Ubuntu version!!??

So the solution (kernel) proposed is not helping me. I guess this kernel
package should not go into the
next version of the kernel - unless I made some mistake and I have to install
some other packages.

What next? How do we fix the problem with cheese not recording properly?

I can attach, lspci -vvn, and any other log files you ask for. Please
refer http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=560983 to see the bug
report of the problem with Cheese for further input on what is happening
with gstreamer.

[Bug 290506] Re: cheese malfunctioning with UVCVIDEO webcams (was cheese doesn't show v4l2 video output and disables output on gstreamer-based apps ran afterwards)

2008-11-17 Thread Balaji
Sorry, This is working perfectly fine. I cleaned everything and
installed only the linux-image-2.6.27-8 and Cheese works like a dream.
Thanks a lot Stefan. This must go into the next version for at least
fixing the problems with Cheese.

However, I am still worried. There is a kernel panic that occured on the
last kernel after about 20-25 minutes of start up. Something was broken.
This was for laptops using the Intel 3294 wireless card. I had to
install some specific package from the backports (linux-backports-
modules-intrepid) . I forgot the bug number, but it is on Launchpad for
sure. If this kernel also shows some wierd stuff I will report here. If
not, I wish it is released soon.

Thanks,
Balaji

[Bug 241973] Re: Use oga (Ogg Vorbis, audio) as the default extension extension for adding music to collection

2008-11-17 Thread Hew McLachlan
That would be classed as a bug with your hardware, perhaps a firmware
update is required. The ogg standard now primarily uses .oga for audio,
and .ogg is kept only for backwards compatibility, see
http://wiki.xiph.org/index.php/MIME_Types_and_File_Extensions . I too
have a hardware player that recognises .ogg and not .oga, so I keep my
files as .ogg as well (for now).

I believe it's more important to adhere to the standards rather than
keep using .ogg indefinitely, just to keep some hardware players happy.
I suspect only a fraction of users with .oga files will have .ogg
hardware players, and those that do would probably be aware why an .oga
file doesn't work.
