[Bug 15495] Re: Archive Manager doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an archive is
Proposed solution: * In context menu rename Create Archive to Compress... * The subsequent dialog box should be re-titled to read: Create compressed file * The input box on the dialog box should be re-labelled from 'Archive' to 'Filename' * Change Archive Manager to Compressed Files on the Applications menu (with tooltip Create and edit compressed files) More data and discussion can be found here: * http://www.designintheopen.org/profiles/blogs/zip-archive-package-or and * http://www.ivankamajic.com/?p=143#comment-23493 ** Description changed: A new user thinks I need to create a zip file, and doesn't know how to do it. If you don't know that a zip file is an archive, which many new users do not, then it's very difficult to tell how to create one. Create archive on the Nautilus context menu, Archive Manager in the Applications menu, etc, are all meaningless. (This happened to me today when someone I know rang me for technical support to ask how to create a zip file, and when I explained how, he said what's an archive?) Suggested fixes (to be taken with a very large pinch of salt and replaced with better suggestions): Change Create archive to Create compressed file on the context menu Change Archive Manager to Compressed Files on the Applications menu (with tooltip Create and edit compressed files) http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=300655: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=300655 Then won't you get questions like: What's a compressed file? Re: [Bug 391079] Re: Dictionary cannot get on-line. Error every time.
Dear Sebastien, Thank you for your prompt reply. Yes, the error is easily reproducible. All I have to do is open Applications Accessories Dictionary and then the dictionary program appears. Type in any word and I get the following message (which I've pasted here): Error while looking up definition Connection failed to the dictionary server at dict.org:2628 It's not an urgent problem, as I usually get up from my desk and use my copy of 'The Concise Oxford English Dictionary'. I thought it would be easy to amend by typing in a simple command somewhere, but I'm totally confused by the plethora of replies and attachments written in Geek-Speak. I can manage without the program, but I thought it would be useful for when I'm out of office on a remote desktop somewhere. If there really is a VERY SIMPLE solution (Key-stroke by Key-stroke) to switch the program on, then I'll be glad to give it a try. [Bug 390724] Re: Back button (most used) in Nautilus smaller than rest
No. Else the UP button should be even smaller. So it is not adapted to the label just like it isn't a theme issue, I tried a dozen themes, nothing fixed it and anyway, the default theme that matters has the issue as well. If it is indeed adapted to the label, then it definately is a traditional bug since the adaptation is inconsistent (since the UP is so big) Otherwise I agree its not a traditional bug but it is exactly the sort of issue the 100 bugs project is for. Quoting From: https://launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts - bugs that are system-wide (Nautilus, Gnome panel, etc), rather than app-specific (F-Spot, OOo, Terminal, etc.) - bugs that impact standard workflows (like connecting to the network, copying files, browsing folders, etc.), rather than specialised or corner case workflows - bugs that are easy to address, rather that ones that require significant design or development efforts - issues with existing features, rather than requests for new features - bugs that relate to usability and design (like size of the notification bubbles), rather than broken software (e.g. notifications flickering in fullscreen) Point by point: -This is system wide and is to do with Nautilus as stated by first criteria -It is to do with browsing folders as stated by second criteria -It is easy to address as stated by third criteria, it won't take a re write or significant tweaking to fix, it's a very minor UI change -It is to do with an existing feature as stated by fourth criteria -It is precisely to do with usability AND design as stated by final criteria, besides, the example of the size of notification bubbles in amusingly analogous to this issue of size of the most used file browser button. I would be hard pressed to find an issue that fits the stated criteria of the 100 bugs project better. -- Back button (most used) in Nautilus smaller than rest https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/390724 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 285998] Re: Deleting ~/Templates and rebooting makes a change in ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
I am a relatively new Ubuntu user and have the same problem. I deleted my Templates folder, thinking it was superfluous like the Music, Video, etc. folders, but as I began to use Ubuntu I realized that a document template feature existed in the right-click menu and I wanted use it. My first instinct was to search in the templates right-click menu for assistance, but none was found. My next action was to check the Help and Support manual, which specifies that you simply have to create documents in $HOME/Templates. I tried recreating the Templates folder and putting a document in it with no result. If I was a novice to computers, this would be my I need to reinstall my OS or I need to call my computer savvy nephew moment. Since I am no novice, I checked out Ubuntu's bug system and lo' and behold several bug reports on this issue exist accompanied by a solution for those with a smidge of Linux skills. I think this is a problem that an ordinary person could be expected to accidentally cause by fiddling with their home directory (after all, for many new users that folder is a sandbox). To me the best solution is to implement an 'assistance' option in the right click templates menu for someone to reestablish their templates directory in the event that XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR=$HOME/. This would help both computer novice and Ubuntu newcommer alike. Of course, this may not be simple from a programming viewpoint, so my solution may not be feasible as the code stands. In the short term, help offered when using Go-Templates may be of use, but I believe that most users will not look here as, from experience, I have found that few users even realize there is a Go menu in Windows, much less in Ubuntu. -- Deleting ~/Templates and rebooting makes a change in ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/285998 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to xdg-user-dirs in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 390724] Re: Back button (most used) in Nautilus smaller than rest
Look I am not on a personal crusade to get a bigger back button :D It's just that when I saw this 100 bugs project, it made me think, this is EXACTLY what Ubuntu needed since its a little rough around the edges, these are the sort of things that affect the perception of people as to whether or not Ubuntu is a polished product. Design consistency is a very basic design principle and one that everyone should be able to understand. The fact that right now it is inconsistent cannot be disputed for the reasons I have already outlined above. But this issue is not only to do with design or UI, rather it is also a much bigger usability issue. See this to get all technical about the issue: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitts_law To experienced UI designers, the current Nautilus window will immediately standout as wierd. It's not just that the back button is small, its more to do with the fact that it is smallER than the other buttons despite being one of the most important (if not the most important) on that toolbar. What further violates the law is that totally redundant or little used buttons such as STOP, RELOAD and HOME are much bigger than it. This is not just personal preference, the stop/reload buttons are fairly redundant in a file browser, they could become more important while browsing over the network (local or wide area) but even then they would never be used as often as BACK. Similarly HOME is made redundant by the side pane showing the file directory. Hope that is sufficient detail to get this rectified in 9.10 -- Back button (most used) in Nautilus smaller than rest https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/390724 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: brasero This bug apply to the brasero application in Ubuntu Jaunty When creating an audio disc copy (probably apply to any disks though) braserro uses cdrdao with the --read-raw parameter. As stated in the manual, --read-raw reads data and P-W subchannels uncorrected, which mean that any correctable errors is copied as-it to the image file. not sure why you think those buttons are not streched to fit the label but thet are, the up button is not the same widget since it doesn't have an arrow which opens a list next to it, the issue is not specific to nautilus other gkt applications using such button have the same behaviour, it would also look weird to have lot of spacing around the text there -- Back button (most used) in Nautilus smaller than rest https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/390724 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

confirming this. would be just nice if nautilus would close the tab (or window if there is only that one tab) when the media is unmountet. also the user would have a definite feedback that the media was safely removed from the system! just think about a very common scenario: - plug in a usb memory drive - do stuff with it - click remove/unmount somewhere - after some seconds the file manager window disappears so also the memory drive can be removed very intuitive i think... was this reported upstream already? -- Nautilus windows should close on unmount https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/23293 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 390027] Re: [karmic] Appearance control panel: Desktop effects could not be enabled
It was reproducible, but I reinstalled Karmic earlier today - if I see it again, after I do all the updates, I will continue to report. Basically though, I did nothing -- just did an safe-upgrade, rebooted, and I could not enable desktop effects any more. It persisted between reboots, but compiz --replace worked to bring desktop effects back, so it seemed to be a gnome-appearance-settings bug. [Bug 391210] [NEW] gnome-terminal forgets profile settings when out of disk space
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal When out of disk space, gnome-terminal forgets its profile settings, reverting from my prefered white text on a black background to the opposite. I discovered this while fighting with this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mlocate/+bug/371749 Since I am using one big ol' ext4 root, when /var fills up, requests to write to /home/... fail as well. I have made no (intentional) changes to my gnome-terminal profile settings in this time. So the question is: why is gnome-terminal/gconf writing to disk when nothing has changed?
