[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment
** Description changed: === Master Bug === (As per the design team's request) All bugs concerning the window controls are being duped to this master bug. All the decisions regarding the position/order/alignment will be dealt as a one. === Desire === "Please centre the window title like in previous Human theme, and also re-order the window controls in classic order, positioned on the right side (menu - title - minimize, maximize close)." Workaround 1. Only new themes, such as Ambiance and Radiance will have buttons on the left by default. You can continue using old themes, such as Human, in Lucid and those themes will continue to have buttons on the right side (according to http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/532633/comments/577 ). It is even possible to switch to Human theme and then 'Customize' it to use all the elements from Radiance theme, but the button layout will stay on the right. 2. To revert to old layout, run in a terminal: $ gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/button_layout --type string "menu:minimize, maximize, close" + + Return to defaults + If you would like to return to the system/theme default then run: + $ gconftool-2 --unset /apps/metacity/general/button_layout Responses Canonical Design Team Leader (Ivanka Majic) - 2010-03-10 and 2010-03-17 http://www.ivankamajic.com/?p=281 ("Those pesky buttons") http://podcast.ubuntu-uk.org/2010/03/17/s03e03-behind-the-screen/ (30-minute interview starting at 39:10) Ubuntu SABDFL (Mark Shuttleworth) replies on this bug report - 2010-03-15 onwards http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/532633/comments/110 http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/532633/comments/167 http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/532633/comments/179 http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/532633/comments/202 to 204 http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/532633/comments/218 http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/532633/comments/248 http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/532633/comments/272 http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/532633/comments/388 http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/532633/comments/410 http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/532633/comments/426 to 427 http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/532633/comments/469 http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/532633/comments/503 http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/532633/comments/564 ("Final decree"; close-min-max ordering) Canonical Ubuntu Community Leader (Jono Bacon) response - 2010-03-24 http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/5683123 (6 minutes starting at 26:24) === Code of Conduct === To maintain a respectful atmosphere, while commenting please follow the code of conduct - http://www.ubuntu.com/community/conduct/ . -- [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532633 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to metacity in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 516520] Re: pam_unix(gdm:auth): conversation failed
By "disabling" I mean using the "System->Administration->Hardware Drivers" and then specifying "Remove" as the action against Nvidia proprietary driver. Xorg.0.log.old is a better place to look as it seems that when X crashes and restarts the crash log is remained .old, and the new instance of X writes the (at the time of looking a good) Xorg.0.log file. My reading of the problem described is that everyone has consistently described the behaviour of the login window freezing and re-appearing shortly after. -- pam_unix(gdm:auth): conversation failed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/516520 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 562777] [NEW] 10.04 liveCD fails to load GUI
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm when attempting to boot from a fresh ubuntu 10.04 beta2 CD, something very strange happens: when it gets to the point where the GUI would normally come up, the mouse appears, and the login sound plays, but the GUI does not appear. It does this both when booting up with and without the splash screen. To solve, I must ctrl+alt+F1 to a terminal, kill Xorg (with sudo killall Xorg, or from 'top') then ctrl+alt+F7 back. [Bug 562763] [NEW] Rhythmbox - iPod Touch 2nd Gen | Syncing work well but deleting leaves the entry in iPod database
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox I'm trying ubuntu 10.04 beta 2 (april 13th 2010). Rhythmbox : 0.12.8-0ubuntu1 libgpod : 0.7.93-0ubuntu1 iPod Touch : 2nd gen 8gb (xB528) Everything is good with the iPod. I had to create directory structure wich went fine. If I add files on iPod everything is good, music sync, plays, alleluia! The problem is when I delete a file, the file is not delete in the database. I unmounted normally the device, restarted the device, and the database entry of the song is still there. If I delete a song with gtkpod, the entry in the database is deleted, everything is fine. Since rhythmbox uses libgpod, does it have to do with ligpod or Rhythmbox? With Rhythmbox, every files is added one by one, on the database and the storage. The iPod does not stay in syncing for very long, it sync for few secs and then the iPod is "usable" (since rhythmbox waits for audio convertion wich is very looong...). With gtkpod, all the action are in queue and done when you save changes. Should rhythmbox change then database of the ipod everytime a file is deleted? Is this libgpod part of the work or rhythmbox's? I will fill the bug repport also for libgpod project. Thank you guys, you do awesome work. [Bug 562721] [NEW] Lucid Lynx Beta 2: Screen stretches outside the bounds of the monitor
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gdm Package version: 2.30.0-0ubuntu3 At login, the screen (resolution I guess) initially fits the monitor (1024x768), but then, withing a second, stretches well beyond the boudaries of the monitor. Only by remembering how to login to Ubuntu allows me to do so, however, once logged in the screen stays stretched. I can temporarily fix it (until next login) by going into hibernate which bumps me back to the unlock screen (it's installed through Wubi in a virtual drive, so not enough free space is what I'm told). This then is in the right resolution/stretch and I can use it properly. [Bug 562674] [NEW] nautilus Large file copy timed out
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus Ok.. this took a while to work out... I am copying large files (over 1gig) across a 100Mb lan from ubuntu to a Fedora server using smb and i was getting slow file copy times, It would start of good and then slowly degrade with large pauses in the disk and network I/O until it would timeout. So i spent some time testing samba (think server might be a fault), Until i noticed by chance that if i copyed a test file to a blank directory it would work fine. so i did another test to replicate the problem and also break it again.. As far as i can gather nautilus must be trying to generate previews or something and getting in the way of the file copy. also if i minimize nautilus the file copy speeds up I hope this helps and if you need any more info/tests let me know as i have lots to copy to the server.. The Package is Nautilus 2.28.1 and the both systems are uptodate. many thanks calvin ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- nautilus Large file copy timed out https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/562674 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 355996] Re: Power Management FAILS most of the time
This is still and issue with 9.10 and 10.04 b2 (lucid- desktop-i386_2010-04-12_0812). The screensaver should care about USER inactivity while powersave should also be concerned with system activity. A diff of two hard drives that contain more than 200 GBs each will take quite some time. Powersave should not kick in during this process but the screensaver should work as configured by the user. This will require two separate notions of inactivity, one for the screensaver only and one for both powersave and the screensaver. Shutdown, NOT suspend should be the default action when the power button is pushed. There are many cases when a hung system can only be addressed by removing power or forcing a shutdown. Shutting a hung system via the power button will do less harm that simpply removing power. Finally, hibernate and NOT suspend should be the powersave default because data will be lost during suspend if power is lost. -- Power Management FAILS most of the time https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/355996 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution Evolution 2.28.1 Ubuntu 9.10 For the past 2 days I've constantly been receiving the following Evolution Warnings: "Error while Storing folder 'Inbox'" and "Error while Fetching Mail". No problems at all, but the warnings persist and keep bothering me every time when Evolution fetches mails! The warning "Error while Storing folder 'Inbox'" additionally pops up every time when I open a different Evolution folder. A ClamAV scan exposed 'Email.Trojan-108' in my inbox. There are 142 mails in my inbox and I haven't found the trojan yet.The only way I know for pinpointing the trojan is moving each file one by one into a separate folder and scanning this folder for the trojan. Do you know an easier way than moving back and forth 142 files and scanning each file separately? Could this trojan be at all responsible for the warnings? [Bug 560455] Re: Rhythmbox transfers but never syncs in lucid lynx beta 2
Sorry to double post but I couldn't find a way to edit. I looked a little more in depth and I noticed two things: 1. I am currently using 0.7.93 2. Do you mean the iPod/Device folder or the iPod/iTunes_Control/Device Folder? Because I DO have the iPod/Device folder. Thanks again. -- Rhythmbox transfers but never syncs in lucid lynx beta 2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/560455 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to rhythmbox in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 186307] Re: Window List Invisibility Issue (Programs Disappear And Come Back Randomly)
Similar issue here, though I use Windows Selector and don't have a "task bar". Running Lucid beta 2 but this has been an issue for a few releases. Applications that are open will not show in the list, minimized or not. I can't seem to take a screenshot of the list when it's being viewed, but right now I have Tbird 3, Terminal, Google Chrome and an email I'm editing open. All but Terminal are minimized. Terminal is maximized and only Google Chrome and the email I'm writing show up in the list. No entry for Terminal or Thunderbird. It's been worse, sometimes I will have 12 or so windows open, all in various states of maximized/minimized and only 1 or 2 show up. -- Window List Invisibility Issue (Programs Disappear And Come Back Randomly) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/186307 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 560455] Re: Rhythmbox transfers but never syncs in lucid lynx beta 2
Angel Abad: You are absolutely correct, I do not have that directory. When I try and create a folder, it is immediately deleted for some reason. It appears this way at least, because I will create the directory named "Device" and then refresh, and it is no longer there. How would I go about updating libgpod through apt? [Bug 562588] [NEW] PDF files with no password ask for one anyway
Public bug reported: Well...Attached is a PDF file. This file is a case action summary from v2.alacourt.com. (I'm a paralegal, I open tens or even a hundred of these a day.) The PDF files generated by Alacourt open fine in every PDF reader on every system except those based on libpoppler on Ubuntu. Here, they ask me for a password despite there being no password on the file. This seems to happen at random - some files do this, some do not. However, every PDF client using libpoppler has the same issue whenever it does occur, so I believe the issue is not in evince (the default PDF reader and the one I typically use) but rather a bug in the underlying library. There is one reader in the repos that does not use libpoppler that I tried before and it would work, but I don't see it in 10.04. Also, this exact same file will open fine in GIMP, but it's kinda stupid to have to open a document in an image editor just to read it. If you'd like to test it like I have, open this file an Adobe Acrobat and it will render fine, no password requested. Same with Foxit Reader. Same with Sumatra. Same with Preview on OSX 10.5.8. Same with the PDF reader on my Android phone. There is no password on this file, and as such, no other reader asks for one, but for whatever unknown reason, anything based on libpoppler does. Usually when this happens (on roughly half the files generated by alacourt, as well as one other site I visited once, I forget where) I just open it in Foxit via WINE, but not only am I getting sick and tired of that, I've also just "upgraded" from a 320GB HDD to a 16GB SSD (data is still on a USB HDD), so installing 100MB worth of WINE and Foxit is really, really undesirable right now. I'm doing this in 10.04, however the same bug manifests itself on the same files in 9.10 and 9.04 as well. My hardware is an Intel Core 2 Duo at 2.0GHz, 4GB DDR2, 16GB SSD, GeForce 9650m, don't even know the rest. I am running 64-bit, but I can also recreate the same issue in a fresh install of 9.10/9.04/10.04 32-bit on both real hardware and in a VirtualBox VM, so I am 100% certain this is NOT an issue related to my hardware. I will try any fix anyone suggests unless it is related to my hardware, that is just not the problem. I have partimage and have backed up the whole system so I would be willing to try a reinstall if necessary however I just installed this 9 days ago (a fresh install after formatting from 9.10) and the problem existed out of the box (as well as in 9.10), so I don't see how that will help. Thoughts? (Also, FYI, this is a case action summary and it is thus public record, so before anyone starts moaning about privilege to a certified paralegal as though I'm not already aware, it's fine. Not trying to be a preemptive prick, but I had 3 people on a forum reply to me a year ago about this the first time I tried to fix it in 9.04, and all any of them could do is try to educate ME about MY job rather than offer me any actual technical help.) ** Affects: poppler (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- PDF files with no password ask for one anyway https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/562588 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to poppler in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
