@Romano:
Thanks for this info. However, I'm still using Maverick at home and Lucid at
office. Both releases suffer for this bug.

[Bug 529696] Re: [SRU] brasero can't copy audio cd (useless error message)

2011-05-02 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
On June 16, 2010 I fixed the bug on my Linux systems by means of
Renzo's PPA.

Yesterday, the problem appeared again on a Maverick fresh installation.
So I should say that (at least) on one of my Linux box I have the
problem again. The Lucid boxes are OK.

Ciao from Italy.

2011-02-07 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
I reported a similar bug as bug #714886.

I recently upgraded from Lucid to Maverick.

Unfortunately I found that GTHUMB bacame totally UNSTABLE.

Gthumb crashes:
   - when resizing group of pictures
   - when deleting a picture
   - when moving a picture from a folder to another one
   - when converting a group of pictures ...

Ghumb crashes almost on 80% of its features.

Please, see attached GDB TXT output about the crash while resizing a
group of pictures (the file was attached to bug #714886).

[Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing

2011-01-03 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Ok. I installed Maverick, and now the situation has became even worst.

Help program crashes during its startup. The main windows tries to open,
but after a while it crashes (without displaying nothing).

My previous complaint was about the procedure
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures which its almost tricky for
a normal user. I mean: I spent a lot of time trying to get a good bug
report. However it was not possible (see comments above #11, #12 and
#13.

Now I upgraded to Maverick. I followed again the procedure at wiki
pages.

The command bash list-symbols-packages-v2.sh -p $(pidof -s yelp) is
not usable: yelp never runs: it crashes always at startup. See attached
file yelp-logmessages.txt for the messages issued by yelp to command
line.

Therefore I tried list-dbgsym-packages-v2.sh /usr/bin/yelp. It doesn't
work. Its output was unuseful (see attached file list-dbgsym-
packages-v2.sh-output.txt

So far I was not sure to have all the tools ok for the debugging.
However I tried to go on with wiki instructions.

Obviously I was not able to attach a gdb session to the running yelp
program, because the yelp program never runs: it crashes in a while.
Therefore I tried to run yelp from inside gdb, even if this approach
is not described into the wiki pages (and please, remember English is
not my language).

Incredible to say, yelp doesn't crashes if run inside gdb. It works,
until I try to print. When I try to print, it crashes.

Please, now see attached file yelp-gdb-log.txt where You see again the
crash info.

Many thanks so far. (Please, consider that I'm now tracking some bugs
I crashed on my computer. I subscribed launchpad for this purpose. This
bug seems that it is not seen but anybody else, isn't it?)

Ciao ... happy new year ...

2010-12-21 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Sorry to bother You with further comments.

Let me complain about this bug management method.

I notified You a REAL bug. I spent many time (hours) to investigate the
problem according to the instruction You wrote me. I discovered that the
crash vanished when running the application from inside valgrind. I
reported the data output from gdb and valgrind. I'm not expert: I'm not
able to decrypt these info.

Last You invited me to try with Maverick. But I CANNOT try with
Maverick, since I never installed it.

Then the bug expired.

Ok, but the bug is still here. There is no way to print the manpages,
because the help program crashes when try to print.

Merry Christmas.

The timing matter (race conditions or so) is quite relevant.

Nevertheless, each time I get a update from nvidia drivers my computer

update (not always, but often) related to some other packages.

The log today.

End-Date: 2010-09-15 10:55:45

After I got new nvidia 185 upgrade, the problem vanished again.

I don't know if this is relevant, I hope this will help to fix the

[Bug 575410] Re: clock-applet freezes when clicking on time

2010-07-28 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Hi there. I prevented You to receive some other messages from me: from July 13
till now I experienced days when the but appeared and days when the bug
vanished.

Today I tried a workaround read from bug #439448 - comment #205 - I
added a 3 seconds delay at gnome-panel startup. Then I tried to reboot
my sytem MANY TIMES and now I can say that the clock applet works
correctly at startup.

This is not a bug fix but a simply workaround. I cannot argue why the
3 seconds delay at gnome panel startup let it works.

[Bug 604007] Re: apt-get install failed on package python-gobject-dbg

2010-07-14 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Last update now.

As long as I need a stable Lucid system, I decided to clean-up
everything without spending more time in this investigation of the bug.
The problem actually arose when trying to debugging a proposed version
of a buggy package. After that trial, I caused the system to become
unstable (from the APT point of view).

Therefore I cleaned up everything just a few minutes ago, deleting
/etc/sources.list.d/ddebs and removing all *-dbgsym packages.

Now the system is correct and APT is working well.

Thank You for Your time.

2010-07-13 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Today the clock applet works normally. No need to kill and restart it. I have
no new package installed (no upgrade was made since 2 days). Therefore it seems
that today the bug is not here for some local reason. However, this is the
first time the clock applet works normally since May 11th (2 months!!!).

I browsed the menu preferences menu entry (right-click), and normal
left-click popup. Everything is ok: no crash, no bug here today.

[Bug 575410] Re: clock-applet freezes when clicking on time

2010-07-07 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Many thanks for Your help, so far. I'm sorry to bother You again. After
my comment (see #14) on June 30th, I tried to make clock-applet
crashing, but I can't: it stands still, freezed but not crashing.
Therefore I'm not able to collect backtracking info for You.

However, the bug is here, it is a real bug, not just a ghost.

Is there any other way to collect info about this problem? Any log file?
As You can see, I spend daily some time focusing onto this problem,
therefore it could be worth considering to spend this time in some
effective way. Any hint? I would like to help debugging this problem ...

[Bug 600086] [NEW] GTHUMB locale is wrong or incomplete

2010-06-30 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gthumb

Hi there. Thank You in advance for Your help.

Please, see attached PNG image. The locale translation of gThumb is
somehow wrong or incomplete. A mix of Italian and English texts are
displayed into menu panels and interactive popup windows. (The PNG image
is only one example...)

I hope that attached info are enough to identify the problem.

[Bug 575410] Re: clock-applet freezes when clicking on time

2010-06-30 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Many thanks for Your help.

Please, specify what do You mean with backtrace in my case. See
comment #12 ... I have no crash on my computer. The clock just freeze at
boot even if the process is running. With freeze I mean that the
displayed figures don't change in time, and don't change if I modify the
set up (show seconds on-off, show date on-off, show temperature on-off).
I can access all the menus and sub-menus of clock-applet without
experiencing faults or crashes. The only symptom is that the displayed
figures are frozen.

When I kill the gnome-panel process, clock-applet restart in a correct
status, and everything then works well.

I would like to collect a backtrace of this strange behaviour ...
please, tell me how ...

Thanks again.

Yet more incredible to say, the bug reappears again since yesterday, after last
upgrade.

Yesterday, APT-GET downloaded these packages:
libparted0debian1 (2.2-5ubuntu5, 2.2-5ubuntu5.1), empathy-common
(2.30.1-0ubuntu1, 2.30.1.1-0ubuntu1), language-selector-common (0.5.7, 0.5.8),
empathy (2.30.1-0ubuntu1, 2.30.1.1-0ubuntu1), parted (2.2-5ubuntu5,
2.2-5ubuntu5.1), language-selector (0.5.7, 0.5.8), gdm (2.30.0-0ubuntu5,
2.30.2.is.2.30.0-0ubuntu2), nautilus-sendto-empathy (2.30.1-0ubuntu1,
2.30.1.1-0ubuntu1)

After this, the clock freezed again. And today is still frozen after the
new bootstrap. As before, if I run the clock applet again, the second
instance works well.

[Bug 575410] Re: clock-applet freezes when clicking on time

2010-06-29 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

I found this bug issue searching the web. I notified a similar bug (#578701) on
May 11th 2010: my the bug vanished on June 1st, and it reappeared again just
yesterday.

The symptom: clock applet freezes at bootstrap and it stays frozen
forever. If I run sudo kill -HUP `pidof gnome-panel` the whole gnome-
panel starts up again, and the clock applet starts working fine.

I can't provide You crash informations, because I have no crash here. So
I don't know what to attach here. Please, any hint?

[Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing

2010-06-25 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Thanks.

I have a problem. I run ./list-dbgsym-packages.sh -p `pidof gnome-help`
-a -t and I received a long list of dbgsym packages. I passed that list
to sudo apt-get install and I received back an error issue. I
translate it from Italian to English (I hope to be able to):

Some packages cannot be installed. ... The following packages have
dependencies that cannot be satisfied: libgtk2.0-0-dbgsym: depends:
libgtk2.0-0 (= 2.20.1-0ubuntu1) but 2.20.1-0ubuntu1renbag2 is being to
be installed.

Unfortunately, I cannot find any info about package
2.20.1-0ubuntu1renbag2.

---

Then I tried ./list-dbgsym-packages.sh -p `pidof gnome-help` -t and I
received another short list of 9 dbgsym packages. I passed the list to
sudo apt-get install and I received back the SAME error for the same
missing package.

---

It seems that it is not so easy (for me at least, not a computer expert
I mean) to debug this problem. Where am I wrong? Is there any problem
about my /etc/apt/sources.list configuration?

Please, help me ... thanks in advance.

[Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing

2010-06-25 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
After a long time and a difficult task (at least for me) I had the
dbgsym installed. Then I run valgrind. Please, see comment #7: when I
run gnome-help inside valgrind the bug disappear, I mean gnome-help
won't crash while printing (please, remember that the bug actually was a
crash when printing, always for each printing command - I never had a
page printed ...).

The situation is the same as some days ago:

gnome-help alone crashes
gnome-help with gdb crashes
gnome-help with valgrind doesn't crash - so no bug report with valgrind is
generated

However, now I generated a new crash report with gdb. No file was
generated into /var/crash and therefore I'm not able to follow Your
instructions this way. I'm attaching the new logfile from GDB which
seems to be full of debugging symbols. Is this enough or should I do
something more?

Thanks so far.

[Bug 518891] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in g_cclosure_marshal_VOID__VOID()

2010-06-24 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

(Coming from duplicate bug #590650)

Hi there and thanks You all for Your help. I experienced the nautilus
crash while deleting folders or files, and this happened on my Lucid
many times.

Today, I experienced what could be a really serious problem with
Nautilus. I don't know if related to the present bug.

I was moving a folder from a nautilus window to another, by typing
ctrl+x in the source window, then moving the focus to the target window
using alt+tab, and then ctrl+v in the target window. When I pressed
ctrl+v nothing happened, apparently. I focused back to the source
window, and I saw that the folder selected to be moved was vanished.
Then I focused back to the target window and press F5 to refresh, but
the folder was not here.

So I searched for the folder using find from the command line: I
discovered that the folder (containing many files) simply vanished from
my system. I search into the trash as well, no sign of life. I'm in real
panic.

I can't figure where to search the missing folder, nor I know any log
files to trace the recent events.

Any hint?

[Bug 590650] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2010-06-16 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Today nautilus crashed again. This time, the crash happened again while
deleting a folder. However, the first crash happened when deleting a
folder from a removable media (USB mass storage device), today the crash
happened while deleting a folder from the local filesystem.

I tried to reproduce the bug, but this won't happen when I try to
deleted folders nor files. It just happened some now and then. So I have
not already understood the exact circumstances upon which the bug
appears.

I tried again to run nautilus from inside valgrind, but again the system
is not usable, because the overhead is too much: is there any valgrind
option to make it faster?

Furthermore, the apport automatic bug system claimed that it was not
possible to report the bug, because libgail18, libgtk2.0-0 are not up-
to-date. Then I run sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get upgrade but no
download happened, because the packages are marked as up-to-date. So?

Anyway, I decided to run nautilus from inside GDB for some days, because
this won't show a great overhead and the system runs well. I hope to
detect again the bug.

See the attached TXT file for debug info.

Thank You.
Ciao.

[Bug 590650] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2010-06-16 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Back again to You. Lucky enough I got another crash running from inside
GDB. Se attached TXT file. Now there is 2 news:

1) gdb detected the location of the fault:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
nautilus_file_peek_display_name (file=0x0) at nautilus-file.c:3734
3734nautilus-file.c: Nessun file o directory.
in nautilus-file.c

2) I reproduced the bug this way:
a) created a folder containing many files about 165 MBtyes
b) use seahorse to tar-gzip-crypt the whole folder
c) delete the folder
d) delete the tgzip file
e) delete the gpg file

Between steps c) and d) the crash happened. Now I remember that this
happen in the same way during the previous 2 crashes.

Thanks to You in advance for Your help.

Ciao

[Bug 590650] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2010-06-11 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Thank You for Your help.

I run nautilus from inside valgrind. The system became so
sloow that it was actually not usable. I spent minutes to open a
folder, then minutes to navigate to a sub-folder. Actually I'm not able
to reproduce the real crash situation in this way.

Before closing, valgrind itself crashed or something related to valgrind
crashed, generating the file /var/crash/_usr_lib_valgrind_memcheck-
amd64-linux.1000.crash

So I don't know how to go on with this issue.

[Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing

2010-06-11 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Hi there.

I try to use valgrind. I then run gnome-help from inside valgrind. I
repeated EXACTLY the same steps-actions that usually generate the crash.
No crash happened. See attached file gnome-help-NOT-crash.txt

Then I ran gnome-help alone, without valgrind. I repeated EXACTLY the
same steps-actions that usually generate the crash. I mean, I peform
EXACTLY the same steps-actions as before (with valgrind) and now I get
the crash. See attached files gnome-help-crash-a.txt and gnome-help-
crash-b.txt.

VERY IMPORTANT: when running from inside valgrdin, the printing
procedure displayed the printer (HW) interface, then a pop-up window
came claiming that the requested page to be printed was not available
... I cannot imagine what this means. When running alone without
valgrind, the printing procedure crashed BEFORE the printer (HW)
interface comes up, and no pop-up window came out.

It seems that valgrind some how bounded the gnome-help behaviour so
that gnome-help succeded in managing a printing page fault, while
without valgrind gnome-help is not able to manage it.

Sorry for my bad english ... furthermore I'm not an expert ...

Any hint will be appreciated.

2010-06-10 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Thanks for Your help.

The problem (crash) happened at first time during normal desktop
operations. Then it happened again just once during last 3 days.

I read valgrind man page. I suppose that valgrind should launch the
application in order to trace it, shouldn't it?

It this is correct, I should run nautilus from the shell, encapsulating
it into valgrind. Well, I'm really not able to do so: I have no idea how
to run nautilus, because it usually start from the desktop environment
...

Please, could You tell me how to do this?

[Bug 583660] Re: GDM doesn't start at boot time (I need to run it from terminal)

2010-05-25 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Thank You Tom for Your help.

I followed step-by-step the procedure You mentioned. First choice, to get the
splash back again The splash screen actually appeared again, but after it
closes, I'm brought back to the TTY-F1 console, and GDM doesn't start anyway. I
should notice that the procedure described is not correct for my Lucid
installation. It refers to some details that don't match:
1) File /etc/default/grub doesn't exist in my system, and I need to create it.
2) Command update-grub2 doesn't exist in my system, and I used update-grub
instead.

Then I tried the other solution. I installed startup-manager, but
unfortunately it crashed before running, and apport connected me to
launchpad again to report this bug too!

So, I'm back to the beginning of the problem. This is not a big problem,
just log-in to the terminal and then manually run GDM ... but I must say
that since Lucid appeared I went through many bugs (OpenOffice, Gdm,
Thunderbird, gnome-panel, clock-applet) that I never experienced with
Hardy or Karmic ...

stuff.

However, today a new sympton happens. After the first login, the gnome-
panel works normally. But after some time, the me-menu and the shudown-
menu vanished. So I performed the kill -HUP command to restore them

It seems to be a real bug.

[Bug 582991] [NEW] Gnome main menu vanishes (and displays deformed text)

2010-05-19 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Gnome main menu vanishes (and displays deformed text).

After login (not always ... but often) the gnome-panel doesn't display
anything. The main-menu button is not present, nor the shut-down button,
nor the me-menu, nor the clock applet and so on. If I left-click with
mouse upon the normal area of such objects, I get the right behaviour.

Then I need to logout and login again (using the left-click of mouse
upon the right-hand limit of the gnome-panel area, where usually I see
the shudown button).

At the second login I always get the right beahivour but I always get
text fonts deformed. See attached PNG image as sample.

I think this is a bug.

Many thanks for Your help.

During the last 6 days I never tried to change it or modify anything. So
it seems that it repaired by itself.

I can't imagine what happened. Any hint?

[Bug 581896] [NEW] Brasero claims for ghost missing apps and libs

2010-05-17 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

Thanks for Your help.

See attached image. Sorry for the Italian local version.

When trying to create a CD from Brasero, it claims as You can see in the
attached image. In English, more or less I see: Not all the
applications and libraries required are installed. Manually install the
following packages and try again. However, there is no listing of
missing packages. Therefore I can figure out which packages to install.

Please, consider that I upgraded to Lucid Lynx a couple of weeks ago,
and that before I never experienced such a problem.

Now I have no possibility to create a CD-ROM.

Thank You in advance for Your help.

[Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing

2010-05-14 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Many thanks. See here new info and comments.

1) The problem reported yesterday happened onto a i386 computer. Today I
found again the same crash problem onto a AMD Sempron machine, running
the same up-to-date Lucid system.

2) No crash file was generated, nor running gnome-help inside GDB, nor
running it alone. I looked for crash file everywhere in the filesystem
using the find command line utility.

3) I run gnome-help from a terminal, and I captured the output: see the
attached TXT file. I'm not able to decrypt its meaning, but it seems to
be a real BUG.

Many thanks again. I hope that these info could help You to fix the
problem.

Ciao from Italy.

[Bug 580206] [NEW] gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing

2010-05-13 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

I experienced many crashes (segmentation faults) while priting pages
from gnome-help. I wasn't able to find any logfile tracing this events.
Therefore, I run gdb gnome-help and the final output was:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
[Switching to Thread 0xb2816b70 (LWP 5751)]
0xb73e4ea9 in free () from /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6

The crash happens ALWAYS when I select the command menu: file - print
this document (sorry if the command is not this: I use the italian
version and I'm translating from italian ...)

When I try to print by means of file - print this page, everything is
ok. But when I try print this document gnome-help ALWAYS crashes.

Any help will be appreciated.

Re: [Bug 578701] Re: gnome-panel/clock-applet doesn't upgrade clock time

2010-05-12 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Il 12/05/2010 18:28, Alexander Konovalenko ha scritto:
When you move your mouse or press a key on the keyboard, does the clock
 unfreeze and start going again?

When I left-click on the applet, it opens normally. However, if I try to
modify any parameter (for instance the show seconds option), the
modification doesn't take effect until the next applet is open. I mean,
if I modify the configuration the changes are not applied to the current
execution of the applet.

If I move the mouse onto the applet without a click, the pop-up tip
appears normally.

Is the clock slow compared to some correct clock outside your computer?

The clock is stop: it doesn't up date at all.

You mentioned you could briefly see the current time by adding another
clock applet to the panel. Does that applet show the exact time at the
 moment when it is added?

Yes, the new applet shows the up-to-date time, which is different from
the original one (the former applet that is freezed).

Open a terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal) and run a 'date'
command. You can run it several times. Does it display the correct time?

Yes. Both hardware and system time is running normally: no problem at
this level.

Many thanks.

[Bug 578701] [NEW] gnome-panel/clock-applet doesn't upgrade clock time

2010-05-11 Thread Cesare Mastroianni
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

At start-up, the clock-applet display the current time, but it freezes
at this stage: no more update is shown. If I add one more clock-applet
to the gnome-panel, it opens with the up-to-date time, and it also
freezes without more updates.

This behaviour begun after upgrading to Lucid.

I suppose it is a bug.
