[Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing
Ok. I installed Maverick, and now the situation has became even worst. Help program crashes during its startup. The main windows tries to open, but after a while it crashes (without displaying nothing). My previous complaint was about the procedure https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures which its almost tricky for a normal user. I mean: I spent a lot of time trying to get a good bug report. However it was not possible (see comments above #11, #12 and #13. Now I upgraded to Maverick. I followed again the procedure at wiki pages. The command bash list-symbols-packages-v2.sh -p $(pidof -s yelp) is not usable: yelp never runs: it crashes always at startup. See attached file yelp-logmessages.txt for the messages issued by yelp to command line. Therefore I tried list-dbgsym-packages-v2.sh /usr/bin/yelp. It doesn't work. Its output was unuseful (see attached file list-dbgsym- packages-v2.sh-output.txt So far I was not sure to have all the tools ok for the debugging. However I tried to go on with wiki instructions. Obviously I was not able to attach a gdb session to the running yelp program, because the yelp program never runs: it crashes in a while. Therefore I tried to run yelp from inside gdb, even if this approach is not described into the wiki pages (and please, remember English is not my language). Incredible to say, yelp doesn't crashes if run inside gdb. It works, until I try to print. When I try to print, it crashes. Please, now see attached file yelp-gdb-log.txt where You see again the crash info. Many thanks so far. (Please, consider that I'm now tracking some bugs I crashed on my computer. I subscribed launchpad for this purpose. This bug seems that it is not seen but anybody else, isn't it?) Ciao ... happy new year ... Sorry to bother You with further comments. Let me complain about this bug management method. I notified You a REAL bug. I spent many time (hours) to investigate the problem according to the instruction You wrote me. I discovered that the crash vanished when running the application from inside valgrind. I reported the data output from gdb and valgrind. I'm not expert: I'm not able to decrypt these info. Last You invited me to try with Maverick. But I CANNOT try with Maverick, since I never installed it. Then the bug expired. Ok, but the bug is still here. Many thanks for Your help. Please, specify what do You mean with backtrace in my case. See comment #12 ... I have no crash on my computer. With freeze I mean that the displayed figures don't change in time, and don't change if I modify the set up (show seconds on-off, show date on-off, show temperature on-off). I can access all the menus and sub-menus of clock-applet without experiencing faults or crashes. The only symptom is that the displayed figures are frozen. When I kill the gnome-panel process, clock-applet restart in a correct status, and everything then works well. I would like to collect a backtrace of this strange behaviour ... please, tell me how ... Thanks again. [Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing
After a long time and a difficult task (at least for me) I had the dbgsym installed. Then I run valgrind. Please, see comment #7: when I run gnome-help inside valgrind the bug disappear, I mean gnome-help won't crash while printing (please, remember that the bug actually was a crash when printing, always for each printing command - I never had a page printed ...). The situation is the same as some days ago: gnome-help alone crashes gnome-help with gdb crashes gnome-help with valgrind doesn't crash - so no bug report with valgrind is generated However, now I generated a new crash report with gdb. No file was generated into /var/crash and therefore I'm not able to follow Your instructions this way. I'm attaching the new logfile from GDB which seems to be full of debugging symbols. [Bug 518891] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in g_cclosure_marshal_VOID__VOID()
(Coming from duplicate bug #590650) Hi there and thanks You all for Your help. I experienced the nautilus crash while deleting folders or files, and this happened on my Lucid many times. Today, I experienced what could be a really serious problem with Nautilus. I don't know if related to the present bug. I was moving a folder from a nautilus window to another, by typing ctrl+x in the source window, then moving the focus to the target window using alt+tab, and then ctrl+v in the target window. When I pressed ctrl+v nothing happened, apparently. I focused back to the source window, and I saw that the folder selected to be moved was vanished. Then I focused back to the target window and press F5 to refresh, but the folder was not here. So I searched for the folder using find from the command line: I discovered that the folder (containing many files) simply vanished from my system. I search into the trash as well, no sign of life. I'm in real panic. I can't figure where to search the missing folder, nor I know any log files to trace the recent events. Any hint? [Bug 590650] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()
Today nautilus crashed again. This time, the crash happened again while deleting a folder. However, the first crash happened when deleting a folder from a removable media (USB mass storage device), today the crash happened while deleting a folder from the local filesystem. I tried to reproduce the bug, but this won't happen when I try to deleted folders nor files. It just happened some now and then. So I have not already understood the exact circumstances upon which the bug appears. I tried again to run nautilus from inside valgrind, but again the system is not usable, because the overhead is too much: is there any valgrind option to make it faster? Furthermore, the apport automatic bug system claimed that it was not possible to report the bug, because libgail18, libgtk2.0-0 are not up- to-date. Then I run sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get upgrade but no download happened, because the packages are marked as up-to-date. So? Anyway, I decided to run nautilus from inside GDB for some days, because this won't show a great overhead and the system runs well. I hope to detect again the bug. See the attached TXT file for debug info. Thank You. Ciao. Hi there. I try to use valgrind. I then run gnome-help from inside valgrind. I repeated EXACTLY the same steps-actions that usually generate the crash. No crash happened. See attached file gnome-help-NOT-crash.txt Then I ran gnome-help alone, without valgrind. I repeated EXACTLY the same steps-actions that usually generate the crash. I mean, I peform EXACTLY the same steps-actions as before (with valgrind) and now I get the crash. See attached files gnome-help-crash-a.txt and gnome-help- crash-b.txt. VERY IMPORTANT: when running from inside valgrdin, the printing procedure displayed the printer (HW) interface, then a pop-up window came claiming that the requested page to be printed was not available ... I cannot imagine what this means. When running alone without valgrind, the printing procedure crashed BEFORE the printer (HW) interface comes up, and no pop-up window came out. It seems that valgrind some how bounded the gnome-help behaviour so that gnome-help succeded in managing a printing page fault, while without valgrind gnome-help is not able to manage it. [Bug 583660] Re: GDM doesn't start at boot time (I need to run it from terminal)
Thank You Tom for Your help. I followed step-by-step the procedure You mentioned. First choice, to get the splash back again The splash screen actually appeared again, but after it closes, I'm brought back to the TTY-F1 console, and GDM doesn't start anyway. I should notice that the procedure described is not correct for my Lucid installation. It refers to some details that don't match: 1) File /etc/default/grub doesn't exist in my system, and I need to create it. 2) Command update-grub2 doesn't exist in my system, and I used update-grub instead. Then I tried the other solution. I installed startup-manager, but unfortunately it crashed before running, and apport connected me to launchpad again to report this bug too! So, I'm back to the beginning of the problem. This is not a big problem, just log-in to the terminal and then manually run GDM ... but I must say that since Lucid appeared I went through many bugs (OpenOffice, Gdm, Thunderbird, gnome-panel, clock-applet) that I never experienced with Hardy or Karmic ... [Bug 582991] Re: Gnome main menu vanishes (and displays deformed text)
Hi there. I discovered I'm able to recover from the problem with the command kill -HUP `pidof gnome-panel`. This way the panel refreshes with all the stuff. However, today a new sympton happens. After the first login, the gnome- panel works normally. But after some time, the me-menu and the shudown- menu vanished. So I performed the kill -HUP command to restore them It seems to be a real bug. Ciao from Italy. Many thanks. See here new info and comments. 1) The problem reported yesterday happened onto a i386 computer. Today I found again the same crash problem onto a AMD Sempron machine, running the same up-to-date Lucid system. 2) No crash file was generated, nor running gnome-help inside GDB, nor running it alone. I looked for crash file everywhere in the filesystem using the find command line utility. 3) I run gnome-help from a terminal, and I captured the output: see the attached TXT file. I'm not able to decrypt its meaning, but it seems to be a real BUG. Many thanks again. I hope that these info could help You to fix the problem. Ciao from Italy. Yes, the new applet shows the up-to-date time, which is different from the original one (the former applet that is freezed).
